Great Car!
If you make several short trips a day, you will use no gas. It go's about 21 miles on all electricity before it switches to hybrid mode, which it does very smoothly. On a long trip of about 1000 miles, all hybrid I got 43 miles per gal. I normally drive about 15 miles a day back and forth to work and never use gas. It cost about .60cents to fully charge the batteries. So the cost of electricity, equal to the cost of gas, would give you about 100 MPG depending on the price per gallon of gas. * UPDATE - I have had the car for 3 years and still love it. Only had to replace the battery that initiates the starting of the car. There is a separate 12volt battery in the back of the car next to the battery pack. The dealer didn't know that and it took a day for them to learn about that. ** Edmunds shows this as a 2015. It is a 2014 *UPDATE - We have had the car 5 1/2 yrs and it is still a great car. It is a plug in electric and the large battery pack only goes about 10 miles now on a full charge, then switches to hybrid mode. It gets about 38 miles per gallon on a long trip on the freeway. We have had no repairs except the fog lights quit and an electrical switch board had to be replaced under warranty. We replaced the tires at 65,000. My wife loves the car.

Retired Boomer
Researched long and hard, test drove Prius V, Mazda CX-5, and C-Max to replace '03 Highlander (great car by the way).Liked the room behind the second row in the V and CX-5 and the driveability of the CX-5. Liked the mileage (knew it didn't get 47/47/47), acceleration, handling, quietness, and accommodations in the C-Max. I have put about 1500 miles on the car so far and am getting about 43 mpg overall. Having fun playing the hybrid game! Much of my driving is in town or two lane rural highway. The mileage does suffer if you go over 65 mph. Diesel is probably the way to go if you want great interstate mileage.
Love My Weird Looking Car
I had the 2013 Fusion and hated it. They put me in this, even though I was resistent. It is funny-looking (better than the ugly Prius, but that isn't saying much). And now I freaking love my weird looking car. It is fun to drive, feels spacious inside but is easy to zip around. The MPG is about 35 right now and I think I can get it higher. Not 47, but maybe 40. The seats could be a bit more comfortable, but I really love driving my car and am loving owning a hybrid. No way would I consider the Prius now.
Love my new C-Max!
I have had my C-Max for about a week now and I could not be happier. Still in the "breaking in" period with an avg mpg of 34.1, but I'm watching that number climb every time I drive it. I have had highway driving trips with 55 mpg and city driving trips around 47. With only about 400 miles on the car I expect these numbers to improve or at least become more consistent. Obviously not built for speed, but that's not why you would want this car. Still, with the combined 188 hp there's enough power to move when you need/want to. Comfort, space and fuel efficient with a kick.
We are so impressed with this car!
Another update. Over ten years and ZERO trouble! Other than oil changes, brakes and tires, nothing has failed on this great little car. We considered updating but there's really no reason to change to another car with unknown results. The old saying holds true, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! We keep loving this car! We've had it now 10 years, 100,000+ miles and have only replaced the brakes and tires. It still gets over 40 mpg average, and can do even better that that when driving 55mph. Interstate speeds of 70mph will be about 39mpg. We would buy this again in a heartbeat. It's a great commuter vehicle, and has ample room for four adults. Can get three in back seat if they're not large. Another update: No repairs other than the previously reported brakes. Still running strong and on a recent 2,000 trip we saw an honest 41 mpg on 55mph roads, and 39mpg on 70mph interstates. Great car, very low maintenance, good mpg, comfortable. Another update. Still liking the car, great comfort for a small car, good mpg and no issues other than needing to replace the brakes again because they rust due to low usage (We tend to use the regeneration braking so there is little use of the mechanical brakes) Another update: About 5-1/2 years, 86,000 miles and still loving it. No repairs other than front brakes and tires, routine oil changes. Mileage holding good, averaging around 41-42 MPG. Update: Almost 3yrs and ~50,000 miles we still love it! It's been trouble free, smooth ride, good all-around commuter. Still averaging 42mpg but see 50 & 60 on some trips. The sweat spot seems to be 50 mph. It doesn't do so good on interstate at 70-75 mph, it'll get about 39 mpg then. But in city or rural it does great. We have our C-Max Hybrid for about 4 months & love it! My wife drives 22 miles 1/way to work and during the winter months she has seen 50 MPG on her drive and 4 month average of about 39 MPG. Now that it has warmed up she has seen 52.9 MPG over the 22 mile drive. I am a engineer and I will say I am impressed with the hybrid control system! Very smooth when gas engine starts/stops. We have learned to leave the heater off for short trips in town because if you have the heater turned on it will start the gas engine to give heat but in a one mile trip it's not going to warm it anyway. Leaving the heater off it will drive via electric vehicle.
