It is actually a truck
I'm part of the minority that uses their truck for the reason it was built. I hook up trailers, load up the bed with mulch, rocks, trees, junk, construction materials and occasionally friends. Even when my engine was dying @250,000 miles, the truck never quit, I've put a new engine in it and it has a new lease on life. Vehicles break, require maintenance and occasionally have failed parts. More often then not the people who hate their vehicles or say they are junk, don't take care of them. Yes there are completely junk vehicles, but I will say this is definitely not one of them. My vehicle: 2001 Quad Cab, 4x4, Automatic 4 speed (5 speed now), 4.7L V8, SLT, few added options
13 years later
I've recently purchased a 13 year old Dakota Quad Cab. I looked for 6 weeks at all sorts of trucks but when it came down to it, this Dakota fit the bill best. Everything works and the truck runs strong with a good tight feel to it. Best part of this purchase was the truck had just 87,000 miles on it. It was well cared for and used during the previous owners summer vacations. The tan colored interior is in perfect shape and the bright red exterior has a nice shine to it. As long as the truck (and all others like it) is well cared for, it will be on the job for years to come. Happy traveling

200,200 and Keeps Going
I own a 2001 Dakota Sport crew cab V8 4.7 all wheel drive truck with 200,200 as of 3/5/14. It's such a great truck! It's a champ in the snow and sand. Most of my driving is city and highway. I change the oil every 4000 miles using 10w-40. Past repairs were minor. Truck gets 16 mpg with a performance kn air intake kit (highly recommend!). I was getting 13 mpg before installing the kit. I'm gonna drive it into the ground. Grey paint still looks great.
200,000 and still going strong
I purchased my 2001 Dodge Dakota (4x4 w/ 4.7L V-8) with about 150K miles on it. It now has 202,000 and still runs great. I started running Mobile 1 synthetic oil in it as soon as I bought it. The only serious problem I have had to fix was the leaking power steering pump. Typical Dodge truck. Mainly, that problem is just a nuisance. I did have to replace the main power window switch and the resistor for the heat/AC control, but those are cheap fixes you can do yourself. Other than that I love this truck. I am currently looking to buy a car because I know that the life of the truck is probably coming to an end, but she still starts every morning and I am gonna drive it until it quits.
Dakota Quad 4.7 V-8
I have a 2001 that I purchased in 2009 and it had 138,000 km I drove it only on occasion but now it is a 4.7 automatic daly driver and I have to say that it will handle what ever I make it do!. Wow My truck takes better care of me then I do of it... go figure? I believe that this truck was built on the right day of the week as it is not a lemon. And it is true about what day of the week it was built! Anyway I would buy a Dodge in a heart beat again and again.
Great Trek
It has been a fine vehicle I have no complaint. Replace the transmission at about 300,000 miles. I'll have to say I'm completely satisfied and enjoy driving it.

Still Ticking
Saw some of the posts with mileage and thought I would post mine. I mine is a 4.7 have 219,800 and still going strong. Starting to use a little oil but what can you expect with those miles?
Pros vs Cons
My spouse and I have own ours since 2009: Pros: - Since we purchased a quad cab: Carries family and big items at the same time not a lot of trips - Super comfortable - great back up car - powerful - sturdy frame Cons: - Since owning it, we have fixed both front calibers (I believe driver side twice within wk apart), all the window gears more than one time, some of hydraulic metal lines (almost caught on fire), now has a burning smell again, also our fuel gauge never worked correctly - we don't get 19 highway miles or 16 city miles, we get maybe 8, about 54 miles per a tank. Thought we have fixed somethings multiple times, I do still like it.
Daily Driver Dakota
Truck has been very reliable since purchased new in June of 2001. Truck was daily driver until about a year ago. Still running many original parts including fuel injectors at 210,000 miles. Transmission is weak link in drivetrain and was rebuilt at 120,000 miles. 16 years old and very little rust, non of which is visible from exterior. 4wd has worked flawlessly since new. Truck has plenty of power with the 5.9 magnum engine and pulls anything I put behind it. A/C is still ice cold and have only had the system drained and refilled once in 2014. Oil changed every 5k and burns a quart every 2k. Sold truck to my brother a couple of months ago with 217000 miles. He had to replace driver side window regulator and is driving it daily.

2001 Dakota quad cab 4x4 4.7 v-8
Truck has awesome power from the 4.7L v- 8, but you sacrifice gas mileage, I originally got 11.6mpg in town was able to increase it to 12.5-13mpg by adding an AFE cold air intake and a spacer ring on the throttle body to atomize the gas better. 3 of the 4 power windows quit working and truck only has 71000 miles on it, Dealer wants $250- 270 dollars a door to fix. seems it should be recalled.
very happy with truck
over all this has been a very dependable trk. other than recalls, had a problem with front leather seat that cracked at 36000 mi. that dealer wouldn't take care of. still looks good and drives great. have AWD plus 4wd in Midwest and never been stuck. gas mileage runs around 15-16 could be better.
Would I do it again ? NO
I bought my Dodge Dakota, October 2000 for $22,000, from a Shelton dealership that was a pleasure to buy from. A crew cab with a V-8 , plenty of power for towing my twenty foot trailer. It was the perfect fit for my growing family of four. It ran great for the first couple of years. It needs a new fuel pump to replace a check valve. It has had two radiators, a new AC pump, new front brakes and needs a new rear end. Will I buy another Dodge ? NO
Great Truck
My dakota quad cab is an outstanding truck. it has a lot of power backing up that loud exhaust note. its performance and exhaust note will turn heads. its a great truck that can haul 6 people in comfort. it can go from 0-60 in about 7 seconds which isnt bad for a truck. its a really comfortable truck and i enjoy driving it everyday.
Now, THIS is a truck!
I have owned a 93 F150 and a 97 Toyota Tundra and this Dodge whoops em' both! The Ford was a great truck, but it was too large and ate too much gas. The Dakota is the perfect in-between size and gets decent mileage for a 4.7 V8 with 235 horses. The Toyota was an overpriced joke. Underpowered and it felt like it was going to fall apart whenever I went over a railroad track. The Dakota is extremely solid on the road and handles exceptionally well for a truck. I love the smooth howl of the 4.7 V8, the great stereo and comfy interior. I'll let you know when I find something I don't like about it, but don't hold your breathe.
good truck ( except for mpg )
I have been very satisfied with this vehicle, up until now when the fuel prices have gone sky high. Mileage not bad in summer highway driving, but in cold winter temps it is poor. One power window motor quit working at about 40k miles. Had 2 factory recalls for the ball joints and a shift lever block problem. They were easily taken care of by dealership.
Happy Camper
I purchased my truck new and fully loaded. I looked at full sized trucks but the fun factor on the Dakota made it the hands down choice. I've towed a 12 foot trailer 600 miles with no problems but primarily use it to haul people and light cargo. To date the truck has been pretty well trouble free and if I had to do it over again, I wouldn't change a thing!
Great Truck
I have had this truck for 18 months and I love it. I have taken it off-road to some very remote places and it aleays gets me there and back. It is very comfortable and the reliable 4.7L V8 has tons of power, not to mention it sounds wonderful. There is plenty of room to haul passengers too.
Great
A great compromise between fullsize and compact trucks. Can tow 6,600 pounds which is more than enough for most people. Gets fairly good gas mileage for a V-8 which is very powerful. I can't say enough about mine!
4.7 V8 junk
140000 valve guide came out
01 dak quad cab
my dakota now has 63000 miles on it and I've had no major troubles at all. The 4.7 engine has tons of get-up & go& avg. fuel economy is aprox. 17- 18mpg. Plenty of room for at least 5 adults.
Great versatile Dakota Quad Cab
This truck has everything the typical home owner with kids needs. It has a very roomy cab which easily seats 5 people. The bed is big enough for most household chores. Plus It comes with a V8 to give it necessary power for towning and hauling. It is a blast to drive with the V8 and 5 speed, although the 5 speed is a bit noisy. Great overall truck which I would buy again.
Better then any SUV
Enjoy V8 power and the comfort.
2001 Quad Cab SLT 2WD
Excellent truck overall. Dodge could do better with their fuel consumption...for the size of the truck. It gets 15 around town and 17 on the freeway; nowhere near Dodge's MPG ratings. Good cargo capacity and towing as well. Overall a great truck, just make sure you are ready for poor MPG, especially with the 4.7 V8. A well put together truck with great options and interior layout.
great truck
Does everything well but fuel economy - I'm getting 15 city, 18 hwy - it is a V8 though...
Some problems but I still love It!!
I drove my new truck home. I had it towed back to the dealer an hour later. The radiator hose came off in my driveway. I've had the heater core replaced,it leaked on the floor of the cab. I had the steering column replaced, the tilt wheel lever came off in my hand. Other then these problems I love it. Thats what warranties are for.
Good Buy
We just bought a used quad cab Dakota and it was an excellent buy. We got the 5.9L V8 and were getting like 16.8 mpg. It also has flowmasters on it and sounds wonderful. This trucks fulfills all my needs in a vehicle. It was a great buy!
Excellent Truck
I have had this truck since it was brand new. It has been an excellent truck and hasn't given me any problems other than the ball joints, which were easily replaced.
2001 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab
If your looking for the get up and go try the larger of the 2 v-8 engines. The 4.7l just doesn't get up and go. By the way this is my second Dakota I loved the old 318cu. engine.
5.9 4wd Quad Cab
Excellent lil truck, the 5.9 is fun and can tow anything provided you can afford to feed it. I have the AWD version so it's a little harder to find parts.
Best Truck Ever
Bought this truck new in August 2001 and have enjoyed it ever since. Plenty of power from the 4.7L V8, great body style, and reliable from the get-go. I have 165,000 miles on the truck and it doesn't eat a lick of oil between changes (every 3000 miles). Best of all, it does everything I ask of it. It tows my trailer with no problem at all, hauls most anything that will fit in the bed, and doesn't seem to be pressed no matter what the cargo.
dodge dakota quadcab
great vehicle only had one item needing warranty work. It was a switch that came loose.
4.7L auto quad cab 2WD
Despite the numerous warranty items that have been replaced, I like the truck's mechanical reliability. What broke? Door lock switches constantly cycling to 'unlock', leather steering wheel peeled, shifter boot on the column ripped, battery shorted, driver's door window regulator mechanism popped, cruise control broke (bad switch somehere). Averages about 19mpg on the highway and 16mpg in the city. Mine has just about every option.
Dodge Dakota 2001
Great Truck. Many benefits of SUV and all the benefits of a truck. We love it. Great ride and super performance with the V8.
01 Quadcab 4X4
I have been satisfied with the overall performance of the truck. There have been reports with the ball joint issues that concern me. The engine has been missing since the truck hit 38,000 miles, from time to time. I have taken it to the dealership(Walters Dodge) on two separate occasions for the problem. The problem remians persistant. Regards, Mr. Monty Dale Rogers
Dream Machine
The Dakota has the best sound system offered in any stock truck. I promise you will not complain about leg room (I am 6'-5" & will vouch for this). The 4.7L engine is the only way to go. Avoid the 5.9L V8. I got 11 mpg average honest. The truck handles like a sports car, you will love to drive this machine. Those needing 4X4, look for models with AWD (there are some out there and they have jeep parts; note reg. 4X4 can't be driven on dry pavement). Best truck money can buy!
5.9 has the power
I have the 5.9 and get around 12mpg most of the time. Sometimes 14 or so with highway driving but is worth it if you tow. Its also nice knowing I can accelerate faster than any other truck out there (except 5.9RT, but who wants 2WD).
Sway bar problem
I have been satisfied with the truck, with one exception... it has developed a very bad squeak due to the sway bar moving inside the outer bushings. Dakota forums expose this as a common problem, but Dodge has made no effort to help consumers with it. To date, there is no cure, just a very expensive temporary fix - have Dodge replace parts for inflated costs.
Dakota a Good Buy
Truck runs great and looks good. Only problem has been a faulty headlight switch.
My Crew Cab
Good tires, excellent handling, Most driving was in a 50 to 100 mile radius from home. One trip out of state for 300 plus miles one way. Gas mileage was as rated from dealer. Has rubber matin pickup bed.
2001 dodge dakota
Great truck . I run the heck out of it and it keeps coming back.
2001 Dodge Dakota 4dr 4wd
Has been a pleasure to own.
Mines a Lemon
My vehicle has been in the shop 7 times since I bought it. It will be going back shortly. The ABS isn't working properly. This is the second time something has been wrong with the brakes. The dash board has been rattling since 17000 miles. That will need to be fixed too. My MPG hovers around 13MPG on the HIGHWAY! Needless to say, I am more than disappointed in the DODGE product and will be going back to foreign manufacturers.
Junker
Front-end parts ware out way too easy 30000 tierod ends gone out 35000 Ball joints gone
Disappointed!
Truck has 25000 miles on it and been in the shop 3 times. Power steering pump failed 1 time, driving lights the next. Loud suspension noise the next time which was all the bushings...not uncommon from what I hear. Still didnt fix the problem...still loud and loose. Very sloppy and rough steering, rock hard seats and poor visibility out the windshield, transmission hesistates to shift. Not impressed for $29000!!
Good Enough
I got the truck in april of 2001. The Dakota has ample leg room in the front but it is not the best in the rear for tall people. I have the Dk. Garnet Red paint which is one hin coat and then the primer. It scratches very easily. The 5.9 V8 has a lot of power which makes it fun to drive. It has the Infinity 6 speaker sound system which has really great quality sound. The only problems are that it went back to the shop about every month till it hit 30,000 miles.
Dakota Quad Cab
Great truck -had to add padding to the bench seat to fit my back - but once I got the seat to fit me - it is a blast to drive with the small V8 handles loads very well
Dakota
2nd Dakota in a row....Would not trade unless buying another Dakota. Love my truck!
Great Urban utility when you have kids
Great for going to Home depot with the family(if you Credit card can stand it...) Have installed a hard toneau cover to make it a Durango with more cargo room.
2001 Dakota Quad
From the day one, we experienced exceptional service and pleasure from this vehicle. Driven in many different conditions, we never experienced any unpleasant 'surprises'.
You Won't be Disappointed
My silver 2001 2WD Quad Cab with 4.7L has been a dream. I use the bed a lot more than I thought. Suggestions, get a LINE-X bed liner, not a factory plastic one. The LINE-X beds look and perform great. Also, make sure to run mid grade gas or you'll get some pinging. The higher driving position of the 4WD version is appealing but I'm still glad I got the 2WD version for a little better mileage. My console tells me I've averaged 17.1mpg overall. Definitely get the 4.7L, the 3.9 was weak during the test drive.
