Toyota here I come
The S10 in general is lacking in all dept. The engine design for 98-2003 is based on a design from 1986!! If you want a track record, look no further, the engine itself is bullet proof, as it should be, near 20 yrs of constant improvements and they should get it right. However your also getting technology from 1986. GM's vehicles have been inferior for a long time, my loyalty is going to be looking elsewhere. I have 45k on mine and it has been in and out of the shop 6 times, thats about 5 times too many for me. I just wish GM would ante up and bring something comparable to the table in this race of "best vehicles" --- Could be worse I guess, I mean i could be driving a 5-cylinder Colorado
Just what I needed
I just got my CC and so far it has been great. Got the 6 CD changer stereo and it will blow you out of the truck. This truck is good in the mountains. It has plenty of power. Got the 3.73 gears which gives it great take off power. Also got the ZR5 package, looks great.

good truck for the buck
the 2.2 engine is torquey but disappears at highway speeds the interior is cheap but rugged get up the hill with no problem with its 4.10 gear ratio awesome gas milege spotty build qualty but who cares least it won't rust out that bad like the old ones do truck built to last the colorado is to me a glorified s-10 the improvments is nothing to bragg about when I test drove it
Nice little truck!
I have done a couple of long road trips with this truck and Im impressed with the performence and the comfort, however I came out of a 2000 Grand AM GT so Im new with the hole truck experience. The gas mileage Isnt the greatest... I can say one thing DO NOT BUY IT IN BLACK! also I highly suggest buying custom mud flaps......
little big truck
I tow a 4000lb trailer with this thing and it tows better then my old F150. Not a single problem in the year I've had it.
Execlent ZR2
I bought this truck used, I have had it for a year. Put normal wear and tear on it and have yet to have a problem.
25k so far
The truck is great Looking and turns heads. The ZR2 is a great factory off road package. It has the power, and the 4.3 runs strong. In my experience i am very disappointed in the gas mileage, the EPA estimates arent close to what i get. I can match the EPA driving like a grandmother (not exaggerating) but if you give the gas more than a touch watchs your fuel needle. Definatley not for a heavy foot, although it does have the power and "get up and go" for passing and when you need it. The torque is great and more than the new Colorado. The tires in later 2003 models were changed to crappy general ameritracs rather than the previous BFG AT's. GM cuts corners
New TRUCK
WANT TO UP GRADE MY TRUCK. I HAVE A CHEV S-10 AND IT IS A 1989 WITH 123000 MILES. IT HAS BEEN A GOOD VEHICIE FOR ME.
Great Truck
Great overall truck for the "budget" minded. Pulls my 18 foot boat like a dream. Would like to see a tail gate open light installed on future models. I droped my payload on the road not knowing my son opened up the tailgate.
Maximum Extreme
I went to buy a base model s-10, but the flashy, tripped out extreme package wouldn't let me go. This being my first new vehicle, I have had nothing but fun driving it, and love the looks and comments people make about it. Way to go Chevrolet.
Buy it Again.
Purchased 10 months ago, we have 15k miles on the truck with no issues. With the 4 cyl and 5 speed transmission plus a tonneau cover (highly recommend) this truck gets 28-30 mpg with A/C running, loaded bed and running 75-80 mph. I just changed from Valvoline to Mobile 1 0w30 and fuel economy went from 28 to 30 mpg. Note- to get performance from this engine shift at 4- 4500 rpms. Peak HP is at 5200 rpm. You have to drive it like a Honda not a V8 Chevy to get it to run. I did a lot of research, and talked to the mgr. of an Advance Auto Parts, they use the same truck with auto trans as parts runners. They run 100-150K abusive miles with no problems.
Great little truck
For the money, my S-10 has been great so far. The 4 cyl 2.2L is shy on horsepower, but great on mileage. I average about 26MPG., with most miles around town. I have had no problems at all, and the rig was 50% less than the comparable Toyota. I would not recommend an automatic with the 2.2L engine. Also, don't drive with the vehicle venting system on defrost if you don't have to, as you are running the compressor, and will reduce mileage by 10%, as well as power. My 5th small truck, and my favorite so far (Mazda, Toyota, Datsun in past, although the Toyota was a great rig too).
2003 S/10
PROBLEMS WITH WATER LEAKS IN CAB.POOR REPAIR METHOD FROM THE DEALER AND GM, ROOF SEAMS WERE SEALED IN THE EXTERIOR OF THE BODY,AND NOT PAINTED OR ANYTING.
ITS GREAT
THIS TRUCK HAS GREAT HANDLING AND SPEED IT ALSO HAS TOWING POWER BELIEVE ME I KNOW I HAVE TOWED A 22 FOOT DOVE TAIL WITH A OLDSMOBILE ALERO ON IT TO NEW MEXICO ITS THE BEST TRUCK I HAVE EVER OWNED
Xtreme fun
I bought this truck because I got a good deal on it. I have owned two other S10 trucks before this one. I drive a lot, so each of the previous trucks had over 180,000 on them when I sold them. I really didn't want another S10 but when I drove the Xtreme I went ahead and bought it. I have had more people make comments about this truck that any other vehicle I have owned. Everyone likes the appearance and I like the performance. It's not a super car but it combines the truck I need with the fun to drive as a bonus. I plan to drive this one till at least 190,000 and don't expect any major problems.
S-10 Ride
This S-10 is a 6 cyl regular cab. The list maker missed this one. I listed a 4 cll and it is not!
Proud Owner
Just bought this 4-dr S-10 and I love it. I traded in a 2001 Grand Am GT and I don't miss it a bit. There is as much room inside as the Grand Am. Handles wonderfully in the ice and snow and the "switch-on-the-fly" 4 wheel drive is wonderful.
s-10
In my experience with S-10's i've found that they're very tough and dependable. i've seen S-10's put through the worst off road abuse you can give a vehicle. from mudd riding to jumping them like in the dukes of hazard. they're a practical truck also. they don't drink gas like a full size truck but they can still haul or pull any load. For the money an S-10 is in my book the best buy.
John's review
It's a good truck i'm happy with what I got for the price but it needs a little more leg room and power but other that that it's a all around good truck I suggest you buy it but get an extracab.
Great Little Truck
This vehicle is excellent for every day use. With a Topper on the bed,it serves almost every need I have. I have a small gardening service and the ease of transporting Plants and bags of fertilizer and other supplies is made simple with the low entrance to the truck bed. is a great vehicle for every other shopping trip also. The excellent economy makes it ideal for city and thru-way drives. Economy, comfort cargo space makes it almost the perfect vehicle.
2003 S-10 Crew Cab
Great truck so far. Not much leg room in the back seat for my 11year old. Please get the 3.73 gear ratio option. The 3.42 has no low end torque. It has no take off power. Nice vehicle and you can't beat the $4000 rebate!
I got my Xtreme before they are gone...
Already an owner of an S-10 I knew I would be pleased w/ another. My '96 has over 110k & except for normal repairs (brake pads, shocks, plugs, clutch, filters, etc.) it has been a great little truck & I kept it for my daily driver. It appears S-10s will be done after 2003 & I didn't want to miss my change to grab an Xtreme. Being my 1st new car, I wanted to place a factory order & get exactly what options I wanted. After having the order in writing, but on hold, for almost 4 months I finally took the leap mid Feb. As it turns out, I got Xtremely lucky & it arrived just 3 weeks later as GM launched 0% for 60mo & $1k GM loyalty rebate.
Fair vehicle
For anyone looking for a light weight truck, this is the best. Packs a 2.2L 4-banger which has plenty of power for around the town and small trip driving. Fuel economy is good on highway (27mpg), bad in city (15mpg). Might just of been my truck, but the GM paint job was not at all to my liking. Many paint bubbles/imperfections found throughout the truck.
So far so good
Just bought this truck last week. so far very comfortable ride, smoothe vortec 4300 engine - could use more low end power. very roomy for a compact pickup. love the insta trac shift on the fly 4wd. had to use it the 2nd day I had it in the sand. Would reccomend. have heard a lot of good stories about these durable trucks.
A Good Little Guy Truck
I have had this truck for over a year now, and it still performs the way it did the day I drove it off the lot. The thing I like about it the best is there is also a Western Snow plow available for it.
Black Crew
I really have enjoyed my CC with no problems other than a paint issue. It's fun to drive and the way I have it dressed up it really turns heads.
Stray away from this lemon
What a pile this truck is. I got the base model with the 4 cylinder and 5 speed. The tach goes to 6000 rpm, but once you hit about 4300 rpm, the engine sounds like it's going to blow up. The tranny grinds gears constantly and sounds like it has 200K miles on it. Annoying as hell shift light. Rattles since new. Front suspensions squeaks. ONLY about 22 MPG, though it's rated higher. There was a tether to the gas cap, but that broke off after about 20 tanks of gas.
3months and all is well
I bought the truck a couple of months ago and love it. The fit and finish is good, the truck drives and looks great. I have gotten many comments on the looks of the truck. So far so good!
most gut less vehicle i have ever owned
motor has NO power, downshifts on every incline no matter how minor,at 60 u r forcing it,and a " go- cart" like this thing should get much more than 25 to 27 mph,i have a 91 dodge spirit with a 4 banger in it that will eat this things lunch any day of the week n gets 32 to 35 mph. most gutless vehicle i have ever owned, definately regret buying it,will never repeat this mistake!
not a bad little truck
I got a great deal on an S-10, fully loaded. It runs great, love the sift on the fly 4 wheel drive and has plenty of cargo area.
Black S-10 Crew Cab 4WD
Got the 3.73 gears, and the trucks performs great. Has great pickup from highway speeds, and is nice off the line. The 4x4 engages nicely and works well. Very comfortable inside.
You'll want one, familes with teenagers
We just purchased our S-10 Crew Cab. Sight unseen we purchased our S-10, and in no way have we been sold short! With to teenage boys active in sports, Boy Scouts etc., we needed a vechicle which would match our life style, with a little something to carry around our cut Christmas tree each year and the many other small hauling requirements. Right after we took it home we had an 8 inch snow storm. What a dream, and the security we felt was unmatched. It handled like a dream. A couple weeks later we went up to the mountains here in Utah, and extremely satified with it's handling under 4X4 low and high settings. Sincerely Appericated
little brother of Z71
I really like the height this truck came stock and the performance with the V-6 engine. This truck can hang with the big boys in the mud and look good while doing it
Nice Truck
I love my S10 crewcab. I pull a boat and carry four people in the truck. The truck has plent of power and is fun to drive. I love this truck.
Sporty S-10
First of all, my truck is the 4.3L, 4Spd automatic trans, ZQ8 suspension, locking diff (which isn't listed in drop-down style options). If you are planning on towing anything avoid the ZQ8 package because it isn't designed for towing. The engine gives me about 17-20 MPG which is as advertised.
don't need to be perfect
It's a 1996 LS 4.3 w/auto and 95000 mi. I've had A/C problems, but I think it is MIDAS instead of GM. Heater not working. Powerful and comfy. Never failed to start. Looks great, not stupid like some others. Prob won't buy another GM however. According to other comments, and wife's Blazer, I've been lucky.
chevrolet truck
At 1000 miles door handles broke.16000 Miles fuel pump went out and the front oil seal.18000 miles brake problems.Very unhappy with the chevrolet s10
Best S-10
This is the best s-10 I have ever driven in the s-10 models with the 4 cylinder engine impressed me very much so.. And the handling was shaky at first but found out front shock needed to be replaced after that it is a all around good buy
Great Truck for Women
My father worked for GM all his life, you could say that GM helped raise me. So when it came to make a choice on vehicles I had to go with a Chevy S- 10. It has been great. The AC works well, radio rocks out! The auto volume was the best invention ever made.
FIRST TIME ZR2 OWNER
THUS FAR THE VEHICLE HAS EXCEEDED ALL EXPECTATIONS I HAD BEFORE PURCHASE.THE VERSATILITY OF THIS VEHICLE IS UTTERLY AMAZING. THE FUEL MILEAGE IS A LITTLE HARSH FOR A MIDSIZE BUT THE TOURQUE OF THE ENGINE IS DEFFINATLEY NOT HIDING IN THE BUSHES ITS THERE AND PROUD
Great truck
I've had my S-10 for almost 6 months and have only had 2 problems with it, both under warranty, and fixed by my local dealership in a few hours. NOt that i recommend doing it allot, i've hauled over a half ton of dirt in my little quarter ton truck. Plus it's the 2.2 four. I get almost 30 miles to a gallon, and once i put a taneu on it i expect it to jump higher. I took it camping with a big load in the back and the truck never had problems accelerating, even passing on the expressway.
2003 Crew Cab
So far this has been a good truck. I don't tow anything, but needed a 4X4 for hunting and winter. The four door is great for kids and I still have a small box for hauling whatever I need to move.
Great little truck!
This is my first truck (I've owned 8 cars before). I love the convenience of being able to haul all kinds of stuff. I have all the options that I need. Supprizingly comfortable ride for a 4WD! I only have 1300 miles on it now, and have a wheel shimmy in the back (feels like the back). Will have to get that checked out...
8 months into owenrship and 15452 miles
I have been very pleaed overall with this vehicle so far. I regret that I didn't get the 6cyc and don't recommend a truck with a 4 cyc to anyone. Othere than that this is the dream truck of small trucks. Chev has a winner here. don't get the caviler though
Chevy's S-10 is the perfect truck !!
This is my second S-10 and if they were still making them after this year I would buy another one. No problems out of my old one (1997 w/ 70,000) and none out of this one. The 4x4 is great, the motor will pull down a house, and the locking rear end rocks.
One sweet truck
This is one sweet truck, the looks the performance its all there. I love my Xtreme it looks better than any truck on the market and it does it without a huge price tag.
Good Truck
Good all around truck
great truck!
great truck! the best!
Good to go
In five years the only maintenance I have had to do is front brakes, oil changes, new tires and battery and one rear light bulb. An amazing bargain. It is a four cylinder 5 speed. I used it in my son's restoration business. We have beat the hell out of this truck and it just keeps going.
2002 S-10 crew cab
Its all the truck I need and has the the ability to be a car when I need it.
