Surprisingly Nice!

I rented a 2020 Malibu with the base 1.5L engine and the CVT transmission which I had initially expected to perform horribly on the highway. I was wrong and this car was a pleasant surprise in almost every regard. I averaged 37 MPG in mixed city/highway driving, the car rode very smoothly and handled better than expected. The seats were comfortable, even on a 5 hour drive and there was enough space for 4 adults to be comfortable the whole time. The android auto worked flawlessly and the heated seats were quick to warm up and the settings allowed for optimal comfort. Overall, I was highly impressed with this car, particularly because I expected to be disappointed. My lease on my Terrain ends in a few months and I may replace it with a new Malibu. The Malibu handles better, gets better MPG and overall was more fun to drive.

Sticking with the Malibu

I am a car guy. I absolutely do not like, or need an SUV. It is getting more and more difficult to find a car made by an American manufacturer. That being said, I am very pleased with my Chevy Malibu with the top of the line Premier trim package. It basically loads up the car with all the goodies. I chose the black cherry metallic color with a black and gray interior that garners many compliments. The 4 cylinder turbo along with the 9 speed transmission gives good performance along with about 30mpg combined city/highway mileage. It is a very comfortable long distance road car. The Bose sound system is very good. My only complaint and warning to new car buyers is the totally worthless spare tire inflater system instead of an actual spare tire. It does NOT work. My dealer quickly got me an actual tire and jack at no charge.

I own a 2021 Malibu Premier and have also owned a 2019 Malibu LT. In my experience, this vehicle is very reliable if standard maintenance is performed routinely (as should any vehicle). I prefer the Premier model for the power and 9-speed auto transmission. The LT is good for economy driving. The handling is very good as well. The Premier recommends/requires using 93 octane fuel, which i stick to and recommend using that. So gas is more expensive. The LT has the CVT transmission, which is slow to shift and does not like cold weather! Must let warm up and go easy on transmission for first few miles. The one negative I have is that the interior could feel more premium, but its good for what you pay for.

Bought a 2020 RS, the gas mileage is amazing (37 on the highway), the 1.5L engine has plenty of power and the cvt tranny is very smooth. The black bow ties, grill, and spoiler are a great addition to this model. This car looks sharp. The Apple CarPlay is great for all iPhone users. I would recommend this to anyone as a daily commuter.

I recently rented a vehicle for an extended trip. Given the option of three different makes and models I ultimately selected a Chevrolet Malibu. I’m a SUV owner and haven’t purchased a sedan in quite sometime. I was extremely impressed with the Malibu. The driver’s seat was one of the most comfortable I’ve experienced in some time. My last day of driving was approximately 13 hours in duration with minimal short breaks. I was more relaxed after that drive than I was a week later in my own car after two drives of three hours in duration with an extended lunch break. I was also very impressed with the gas mileage. While most of my driving was “Highway” driving I was getting 36+ miles per gallon. Amazing! Comfortable and fuel efficient both.

The car I didn't know I wanted

I went to Auto Nation Arrowhead to look at a 2019 Impala LT I had been checking on line and when I sat down with Debbie Ponticelli, who I was referred to by a friend who has bought a few from her over the years. She sat me in this white Malibu with a four cylinder engine, everything I thought I didn't want. No color and a small motor. But took the car for a test ride which I was fairly impressed with, so I went through with the deal. Now that I've had it for a couple weeks, I'm getting the feel for how it drives and the car is starting to adapt to my driving style. I'm very happy with my purchase. Mind you I put down a minimum of 300 miles a week. Have about 1200 on it now. Would most definitely recommend a new Malibu to anyone who's looking for a spacious and zippy daily driver. NICE CAR

Broken electrical system warning

While driving my 2020 car with 36k miles on it, my car randomly stopped in the middle of the road and would not turn back on. This was 2 months ago. After getting help at Jim Ellis Chevrolet, they "fixed" the problem. A faulty AC compressor caused my car to stop driving in traffic, with no warning or problems with my engine. They diagnosed the problem as "AC compressor clutch plate and pull completely seized. Seized compressor resulted in overheating and damaged starter". They said they replaced all the parts and fixed it. and because the car was a 2020 car and should not be breaking this soon, Ellis Chevrolet paid for it. Yesterday, November 16th 2021, my car did the exact same thing while I was driving. Stopped in the middle of traffic, while I was driving. This could have easily caused an accident. It is currently sitting at the same certified repair shop until they can guarantee my car will not randomly stop while I am driving. I write this as a warning to anybody buying a new or used Chevy Malibu, don't. Sure, when the car is working it's fine; nothing special, just ok. However, the risk of getting in a car accident presented by this car is disturbing. I refuse to drive it again until they can guarantee that the problem is fixed. If you are in the market for a new car, or a used car that is relatively new, do NOT get a Chevy Malibu. 3/9/22: The first problem I had happened 600 miles after the bumper to bumper warranty ended. The car stopped while I was driving and would not turn back on. The certified dealer said the fuse box blew too much electricity in my car and shot everything. They fixed the car. 2000 miles later, the same problem happened. The certified dealer and corporate Chevy were unable to duplicate the problem and sent me on my way after telling me to turn off the auto stop function. the 3 problem my car has is the check engine light and the fuel gage. It read that I was good on oil, but I was not. I took it to the chevy dealer, got an oil change, and they insured the oil sensor was fixed. the 4th problem I have is with the car's battery. The Battery voltage varies wildly from 9.5 to 14.5. One day the check battery light came on, and then turned off 5 mins later. A battery check at an auto zone showed that the voltage regulator in the alternator was not charging my battery correctly. I am now in the process of paying hundreds of dollars, on top of car payments and regular upkeep, to fix a 2020 car in 2022. including hundreds on just diagnostics at certified Chevy service centers. This is a 2020 car that acts like a car built in the 90's. When it works, the car is fine, some might even say great. I would strongly recommend not buying this car.

Nightmare on wheels

Terrible car! Where should I begin? Purchased in June 2022 with 57k miles from Off lease only. Within a month, CEL(check engine light) comes on with P0420 code, which has to do with the catalytic converter not working efficiently. Mind you, I did research via google and found out that most cars either never need a new cat converter during their lifetime, or at the least, last up to at least 100k miles driven. Pretty much ignored it, since it didnt seem to affect driveability. FF another month(2 mos after purchase), I happen to glance at my dash one evening while driving home and noticed that the engine temp gauge's needle has crept past the midway point and was moving near the red. Came to a stop light and the needle moved back to the normal range and hadnt done crept back anymore the rest of my drive. I thought "hmmm thats strange" and quickly dismissed it. 2 weeks later, same thing happens while taking my kids to school. Only reason I noticed it this time is because the message center on the dash began chiming and displaying the message "engine too hot, turn off a/c to prevent further overheating". I immediately pull over to let car cool off. Go under the hood and I see the coolant reservoir has about a tablespoon of coolant in it. Luckily I was very close to an autozone, so I drive over and buy some Prestone 50/50 coolant made specifically for GM cars. I top the reservoir off right there in the parking lot and think to myself, "ok, maybe thats why it started overheating 2 weeks prior, just probably low on coolant from when I first purchased it. problem solved" Another 2 weeks go by and coolant is back down to a teaspoon level again. At this point Im thinking, I obviously have some type of leak, but didnt see any visible signs of one (nothing leaking out on the ground below or in the engine bay). It got to the point where I was buying 1 or 2 gallons of coolant every week just be sure i had coolant, because thats how often i would need to re-top the reservoir. This got worse over the next 2 months, because now I had to start re-topping it every week, which meant this mystery leak was getting worse. Eventually, more issues manifested, including intermittent stalling out from a cold start every morning if I didnt let it warm up at least 5 minutes, thick white smoke coming from the tail pipe, significant loss of acceleration/power when driving from a complete stop. Then check engine light with about 5 or 6 trouble codes that would NEVER go away. Turns out my head gasket was leaking and on the verge of completely blowing, which caused all of the aforementioned issues. Not even a year after purchase, and already having a major, costly repair that would NOT be covered by warranty! Car wouldnt start without stalling out until the engine temp was at least 145 degrees F before driving. Complete nightmare and I always dreaded having to drive it to take my kids to school, myself to work, basically anywhere. Acceleration from a complete stop got so bad, that I would hold up traffic because it accelerated so slowly, felt like it was stuck in a gear that it couldnt get out of. Constant "reduced engine power" messages. These cars suck and I DO NOT recommend getting one. Finally had enough and ended up trading it in, which left me upside down on my loan. I didnt care because I was relieved to get rid of it. Please dont every consider buying one, theyre very poorly and cheaply made and GM knows this. Thats why their warranty is now only 36k/3 years compared to the 60k/5 years it was a few years ago. Consider yourself warned!

Sporty, fuel-efficient & fun 2021 Malibu RS

Back in December 2022, I decided to stop by my local Chevrolet dealership, to purchase a more affordable, more fuel-efficient vehicle. At the time, I was driving a '14 Lexus GS 350 F-Sport, and my monthly car payments were pretty high, and it felt like I lived at the gas stations, due to that thirsty V6 engine. There was a 2021 Red/black Chevy Malibu RS, with just over 18,000 miles for sale, just chillin' in their certified pre-owned car lot. I was told it was previously owned by a Chevy employee, and all the recommended services/maintenance had been done regularly to this vehicle. I took it for a test drive, and barely noticed the sound of the turbo, but absolutely loved the linear power and its quick, 0-60 speed. Needless to say, I purchased the 2021 Chevy Malibu RS(turbo) and here are some of the "pros," & "cons" of owning it: Monthly payment: my payment is lower! Fuel economy: my gas mileage is lower! Regular maintenance: very minimal! (I've only had to do one oil change + tire rotation so far) Infotainment system works well+smooth. Rear back up camera/display very clean. Absolutely love the rim package on it! Really like the unique color : red/black. (It looks different, depending on lighting) The car handles very responsively, and the turning radius is fairly decent. Cons : The interior is very basic/boring. (cloth and black plastic, everywhere...) There are a few exterior scratches on the passenger side, from previous ownership. Top-end power is lacking, due to the small 1.5 liter engine. And that's all I have to say!

I bought my 2020 chevy malibu in January 2021, it looked like my dream car..little did I know the nightmare was just beginning. It was my very first car off a dealer lot, and it has been the worst car I have ever bought.. with in the first few months the transmission went out and parts on the transmission, over 10,000$ in repairs, then radio wiring was messed up, which it still goes crazy after long drives, and today I was heading home from work on I75 and running about 80mph and the car shut down completely and dash said to restart car.. wow... so glad my kids were not with me... so now this will be the 10th time my 2020 will go into the shop, and I'm sure it won't be the last...

Got my 2020 Black Cherry Malibu SE December 17, 2019 fresh off the showroom floor with only 6 miles on it. As of today, August 02, 2021, my check engine light has been on over 8 times, I have done all maintenance on time. Today the car locked down, I received numerous error codes on the dash(Teen Driver warning, Power Steering, Traction and many more), my brake system went out and I could barely stop to pull into a gas station. I am now waiting for a tow truck to take my car and plop it at the dealership until it can be looked at. There must be a sensor issue that isn’t being recalled because this is insane. The touchscreen doesn’t come on or they don’t react to touch most of the time either, something is up with this car.

Unfortunately, this car is a representation of Chevrolet in 2020. I’ve owned Chevys since 2010 (4 of them) and every year I replaced one with another, the built quality and sturdiness has gone down dramatically as the options have gone up in numbers (a bit) but with unimpressive punches. The Malibu interior looks like a slick 2010 interior, not a state of the art 2020 car. The material of my LS is cheap at best, rough feeling and very soft like a sponge with too much air in it. The screen is slow, laggy and of poor graphic quality. On top of that, if you go deep into a menu like music on Airplay, pressing the Music app button won’t bring you back to the main Music screen. You have to press, Back, Back, exit etc. Not very safe while driving. Also, you will have to put up with unexplainable control lags while changing songs. I pressed Next song on the steering wheel and it took 10 seconds for the song to change. I drove other cars (Mazda and Nissan) and the controls never lagged. The trunk is relatively large but tight, has quite a bit of metal exposed at the top, instead of being fully covered so you don’t scratch something you store in there. There is no handle to close the trunk so you have to put your fingers on the outside, either leaving finger marks on the car or dirt on your hands. Who does that anymore? The steering wheel is not comfortable unless held from the top, which makes for sore shoulders after long drives. The Center console has small cup holders and even smaller little space to put... i don’t know what you can put in there, making the console completely useless to store anything that won’t blow away from opening your windows. The main storage is a big hole without any separators. The glove box is very wide but not deep enough to even put a box of tissues without having to crush it a bit. There is also only 1 USB connector. All in all, it is a pretty looking car that feel like it was built with saving pennies from top to bottom in mind more than anything else. It also feels like there was too much emphasis in having a big empty space so the car feels big, which it does, but you end up with a car that feels empty.

The Malibu is roomy and comfortable with a spacious back seat and trunk. The front seats are comfortable and the cup holders in the door still allow map storage. Handling at high speed was wallowy with the LT suspension and acceleration was only adequate. The lack of multiple safety detection systems is becoming a glaring omission when most rivals offer them on all mid size models. The touch screen was very easy to use, but the Bluetooth kept disconnecting or switching to calls only, no audio. Gas mileage was a little below that of Altima; Camry or Sonata, but still acceptable.

Love the 2.0 Turbi engine, the heated steering wheel & seat. Live the Bose speakers. I feel safer with the lane departure, blind spot, & sensors in the front, side & back of the Malibu Premier. The radio controls are a bit confusing. Also not easy to remember which radio voice recognition is compatible with Siri & Alexa. UPDATE: The 9 speed tranny is smooth & has ample pick up. Some materials used in the interior are cheap considering the car’s price tag. Love the exterior paint color. Enjoy the speakers although I added a subwoofer. The infotainment system isn’t consistent and is frustrating at times. Overall, I am pleased, however, I have under 5k miles so I expect to not have mechanical issues.

Great car for the price!!!! Love the sport tuned suspension and CVT transmission. Ride quality is on par with my 2020 Malibu Premier. With a mix of city and highway driving the fuel efficiency is amazing. I average 50-55 plus mpg and get about 14 days on a full tank of gas. If you buy one do yourself a favor and spend $4k to have exiled ecm tuning software from the south Korean spec Malibu 1.5 . You'll love the full customization and remapping of the cars ecm. Along with being able to fully disable emissions control software in the ecm which will grant you extra power and even greater fuel efficiency. Can't say enough good things about the Malibu RS. This car is legit THE BEST car chevy makes for the U.S market!!!!!!!!

This is definitely a car built for a rental fleet. It had space inside, reasonable MPG, and a decent trunk. It’s all downhill after that The car has no acceleration yet can somehow spin its tires from a stop. The suspension is lousy, rattles were everywhere, and there is in no sound deadening whatsoever. I’m sure any other mid-size sedan is better and more refined in every way.

DO NOT BUY THIS CAR

I brought this car through Enterprise Car Sales on 10/14/21. In late May 2022, my car would not accelerate beyond 60mph and it began making a very strange noise. My auto start simply stopped working. My mechanic identified the issues (codes P0700 and 0730) and refuse to work on my car. Long story short, I need a new transmission which was covered by extended warranties but I had to come out of pocket $713 despite having an extended warranty. Transmission was replaced on 06/28/22. July 15, 2023, car lost all power while in car with my child and again would not accelerate above 60mph. Again 0700 and 0730P codes=transmission needed. Transmission replaced again on 09/22/23. DO NOT BUY THIS CAR!!!!!!! NEW USED OR NEW, many reviews I read after buying this car all cite this is the worst yr, make and model of a Malibu to buy to buy.

Very nice Buick in Chevrolet sheetmetal. No complaints except trunk release should be in cabin. Paid too much at stealership, but a car was a must! Edmunds is correct: too much hard plastic. Now one year old. Not a single problem. No Premier edition in 2023. So glad I have this Premier. More horses than Cadillac 2.0 T. Pleasure to drive, but better to be a passenger.

Most uncomfortable seats

Think twice if you are planning to buy this car for long distance road trips. The seats are very uncomfortable. I got back ache just driving 400 miles from Worcester MA to Niagara Falls NY. Even my children on the back seat were very uncomfortable the whole journey. I' m lucky this was just rental car. I feel bad for anyone owing this car. The only plus for this car is mpg, about 37 mpg highway mileage.

Not competitive

MLG, 07/07/2020

I am renting one for one week but when compared to other midsize sedans it is a far cry ( Camry, Accord, Sonata, Optima, Passat, etc). Let's start with the good. I drove mostly 75-80 mph and the car was very quiet at hwy speeds and was getting an average of 35 mpg. When compared to the 2018 Nissan Altima I rented last year, the transmission of the Malibu while a CVT, is infinitely better than the Nissan. The infotainment is good and apple/Android car play is very nice. Screen is of a good size and graphics are good. Basic speakers are just ok. It does have a fairly large panoramic sunroof, but the cover is just fabric not like a fabric covered piece of plastic...feels cheap. Now the bad...the rental car was very new with only about 4,000 miles. There were some creaks and groans coming from the dashboard that won't be find in the competitors. The 1,5l engine is underpowered and can't tell it is a turbo. Now, Honda knows how to make 1.5l turbos. Not Chevy. Inside comfort is a bit lacking. Front seats aren't that comfortable and after 5 hours driving I still couldn't find a comfortable position although the seats were powered. Lights are really underpowered and can barely see at night. If Toyota Corolla offers standard LED driving lights since 2014, why can't Chevy? My rental car was an LT trim which should be fairly well equipped. Weirdly, doesn't have any new modern safety features such as blind spot monitoring, brake assist, automated cruise control..etc. It does have on star. I don't like a lot of the new safety features such as lane keep and auto braking but blind spot monitoring?? All cars have it. If I was playing "The Price is Right" I would guess this was about $14-15,000 vehicle but obviously it isn't. It is worth about 14-15,000 though when brand new.

Some kid had hit my car, and totaled it, and I had to rent vehicles so I could get around for a while. But when I do get ready to buy another vehicle, a Malibu would be my choice, I had the privilege to drive one for a whole month without any problems, and I haven't had NO complaints about it 😍

Of the dozen or so mid-sized sedans that still exist for less than $40K, this has got to be the most pathetic. I rented one for a week (after praying I wouldn’t be saddled with a Malibu) and despite having fewer than 18,000 miles on it, it was already falling apart (paint chips, uneven door gaps, carpet pulling away from door sills, rubber jams pulling out). It could just have been that rentals are abused but that still doesn’t make up for weak performance from an engine (1.5 liter) that’s fitted to an otherwise larger car. Easily the least responsive pickup of any car I’ve driven when you hit the gas. If you have a family of 4 in the car, forget it! The seats are also terrible—basically thin padding on a hard base. Just a sad vehicle relegated to the bottom of the heap of mid-sized sedans. I guess if you couldn’t afford or find something better (ie Charger, Accord, Camry, Passat, K5, Sonata, Altima, Maxima, Avalon, 6, or Legacy), a Malibu beats walking (provided it still runs given Chevy’s spotty track record for reliability).

So I've had my 2020 Malibu LS for 30 days. This car for under $18,000. 0% for 84 months has been a terrific buy. This car rides well, has plenty of leg room trunk room. Looks wonderful. Sure it's not a sports sedan but I didn't pay a sports sedan price. It really is a fun car to drive. Car is simple to use with technology. This car has a lot of value. Can't wait to drive it.

Comfortable and easy driver. Bit more engine noise than the competition. Interior has improved dramatically from older models. Annoying proximity keyfob. You're forced to get the fob out to look at it in order to press the right part of the rubber monobutton on the control face. The fob has lock and unlock buttons next to each other on a single surface, with no way to tell which button you're pushing by feel. Trunk unlatch button on the fob is balky. Buttons on steering wheel also made o in a cheap rubberized monobutton style.

I've been driving Chevy's for years so I'm a bit biased. The Malibu I own isn't the fastest or the best-looking sedan out there but it's perfect for me. Good mileage, comfortable seats, and easy-to-use controls and is one of the few sedans still available. I like the iconic Chevy look.

On February 14, 2024, I purchased a 2020 Chevy Malibu LT with 109,000 miles and my experience has been nothing short of disappointing. Trouble began just two months after I drove it off the lot. The check engine light constantly illuminated, the air conditioning failed, and the brakes became unreliable. Additionally, the gauges started fluctuating; shockingly, despite having a full tank of gas, the fuel gauge often displayed a low reading. A trip to an auto parts store revealed that I needed to clean the throttle body, which quickly turned into a recurring task every couple of weeks, prompting me to eventually replace it altogether. Even after cleaning the throttle body, the check engine light persisted. A diagnostic scan subsequently identified a problem with the mass airflow sensor, which I cleaned several times before finally replacing it. Now, the check engine light has returned, this time indicating an issue with the turbo injector. To add to my frustration, the car occasionally stalls while driving, prompting me to shift into neutral and restart it. I've even replaced the gas pedal due to intermittent acceleration issues. This vehicle is equipped with an excessive number of sensors that frequently malfunction simultaneously, resulting in costly repairs. This car poses a significant safety concern and should be reconsidered for sale; it is simply not reliable.
