2nd Impala - Best Car I Have Ever Owned

This is simply the best car I have ever owned. I bought my first Impala in 2008. It was brand new and a few years later I had a wild hair to get an expensive, premium European car. I kept that car for about a year because it was constantly at the dealer for repair under warrantly. I really missed my Impala so I got another one! The 2012's new engine and transmission is awesome. My car was a rental and got a great deal. If you read the professional reviews, they are almost always negative but I really believe that these cars are underappreciated. If you want a great value on a car that will give you years of trouble-free driving, check out the Impala. I now have 38k on the Impala.

If you need something to change in every year of a car, then this isn't the car for you. If however, you want a safe, comfortable and reliable car, this is it. It has many creature comforts from heated seats to satellite radio and sync. We are getting 30 mpg with the new engine and transmission! So, if you need "bling" you might want to look elsewhere, but if you want a strong, reliable car with descent gas mileage for thousands of dollars less that the other cars they compare the Impala to, look no further!

Not sure what the complaints are about. This car is a pleasure to drive. I drive a combination of driving and get 24 mpg. The 300hp is amazing! Smooth acceleration and great braking. I don't know about others but I have no problems with parking, good turning radius. The car rides and handles well. As for pricing, I bought the car with 21.4k miles and paid $11900. It is a LT model and was a rental out of Montana. It has tinted windows and a sunroof. As far as handling, I find it to handle quite well for the size of car that it is. My personal opinion is that it's a great car and a great value. I’ve owned the car now for 3 years now and I’m still quite happy with the car. Only two problems I’ve had is a wheel speed sensor and a hvac control module and door motor for the heating/ cooling system had to be replaced. All covered by my extended warranty. I would still recommend the car. Now after 4 years of ownership I’m still very happy with the car. Other then the couple of items listed above I’ve had no problems with the car. It’s been a very dependable car and would still recommend it. I would agree with a few other reviews that the front seats are a little flat and don’t wrap around you but for me that’s a minor issue considering the reliability and value of the vehicle. So now I’ve had the impala for 5 years. It’s still a great car. Still no problems. Will be putting new brakes on it soon but I have over 75000 on the original pads. Other then a new set of tires and oil changes I’ve done nothing else to the car. I would still highly recommend this car.

Great car for Much Less than Competitors

We bought a 2012 Impala LT as a certified preowned car with 11k miles, so my review perspective is a little different than someone buying new. We looked at a lot of cars: Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Chevy Malibu, Chrysler 200, etc. We liked this car the best. It rode and handled better, had more power, a larger interior and trunk, remote start, and by far the best pricing. So far it's been an amazing car. It's a great blend of comfort, size, performance, and economy. The cars Edmund's recommends instead of this car are MUCH more expensive for the same miles/year. Like $8-10k more. So yes, you could get a better car, but I don't believe you can for the money. This is an excellent car.

I recently purchased my first LTZ- a 2012 model after searching high and low for that perfect mix of performance, comfort and style. This car has it all. The 302hp engine is awesome as well as the ample room (I'm a tall guy).

Own a 2012 Impala LTZ loaded with every option. Solid build structure, very roomy, many features and great value. The fact that the 2012's & 13's have GM's new direct injected V6 engine and a six-speed auto make them that much better then the 11's. 302hp and on a trip back from southern PA to upstate NY averaged 30 mpg! Love the Bluetooth for phone, Bose sound system, XM satellite radio, heated seats etc. Love the car and plan on keeping it for a while, or at least until I can afford a 2014+ Impala LTZ.

I love this car. Bought it in 2013 with 16K miles and now have 48K on it. I've read many reviews suggesting that the Impala has lackluster handling. I wonder if these reviewers have really driven an LTZ. It has GM's FE3 suspension which is also standard on SS Camaros of the same year. This car handles well, but the ride is a little stiff. One big improvement would not be using the Goodyear Eagle RS-A tires. While these tires have worn well, especially for the lead foot driving I do, they are a true hazard on wet roads. One of the worst wet handling tires I've ever owned. Oh, and the Bose sound system...Wow!

..but at 6'3" I couldn't fit in a mid-sized sedan w/ the center consoles. I am very glad to have stumbled on to it, bought 10 months ago w/ 55K. It is very comfortable and gets very good mileage especially on the highway. The 3.6 has a TON of power, especially on the highway in passing or merging situations. It is slightly more sluggish from stop signs than my 3.1 V6s were, but not a problem. It parks and turns as sharply as my previous mid-sized sedans. it's strong suit is out on the highway where is tracks like a champ and often gets over 30 mpg. The cloth seats are the best and most comfortable I've ever had. The suspension is a little on the stiff side, almost like a 'Sport' model. But it still has a good 'ride'.

Just purchased a used 2012 Impala LT with 17k miles. I got it for a great price and I can tell you its one of the best rides you can experience. I always had Cadillac's but this time I dont have as much to spend so I tried the Impala. What a car! I should have been looking in to Chevy sooner. The pick up and the nice soft ride is just like a Caddy. I tell you, there are no import cars out there that can give you a ride like this. I have driven them all. Edmunds review of the Impala having cheap interior, I dont see it. They just cater to foreign automobiles.

Bigger and wider front seats that you can't get in large SUV's and pickups. More legroom without the wide center console in most vehicles that take away the much needed leg room.

Decided to purchase the Impala from my local Chevy and Buick dealer. The car had 15,000 miles when purchased. The car was first put into service in Hawaii as a rental . When I turned the radio off I could hear a whistel or buzz from 2100 to about 3000 RPM. Turns out there is a service bulliten on the 3.6 for buzzing, humming or whisteling from 2000 to 4000 RPM, bulletin PIP4956A. This covers the replacement of the intake manifold. Just picked the car and and no more noise. All work was performed under warranty. I really do like the car and who can complain about 300+ HP on tap. Since above post have had bottoms of doors repaired were rust had started to form between the outer door skin and the interior door structure. Called GM they will no longer cover repair because of the 3/36 warranty expired, however the said there still is a life time rust through warranty. Now let me see should I wait for the door to rust through or have it repaired now? Had it repaired on my time. Will try to get some reimbursement from GM.

If your in the market for great car for the money, check out the Impala. I bought my 2012 used with 30,000 miles on it and have no regrets. I use the car for my daily commute and average 22 to 24 mpg's in mixed driving. I have hit 32 on the highway, not bad for a car of this size with a 300 horse v6 under the hood. There are 4 cylinder econo boxes that won't give you that. I have the LTZ with full leather seating surfaces, power everything, heated seats and bose sound system. All this for 14 grand. The car does not have a touch screen infotainment system and I really don't need it. Found this car in a ad, scheduled a test drive and bought the car same night. I have now put 20,000 miles on it and only needed to put four tires on it and four oil changes. The more I drive it the more I like it. Up to 73500 miles now and I have not changed my opinion of the car. I have done nothing more than normal maintenance and average mid to upper 20's for fuel mileage.

Fused spine, so getting in is a little tough as the vehicle sits low. I've added "Blind Spot" mirrors to both sideview mirrors ; It helps a lot. This car will burn the fort tires from a dead stop; Acceleration is not a problem. The transmission does take a little to long in shifting from 1st to second. Likewise, it hesitates on downshifting from 3rd to 2nd. The 'air recirculating' button is hard for me to find without taking my eyes off the road. I've put almost 4k on it since I bought it. Rain, snow or ice has not been a problem for me in WI. The auto traction control works as it should. I'd to have fog lights!

Blind Spots

This car has blind spots. If you are shorter and need to move the seat forward for driving the headrest on the both the passenger and driver make it difficult for lane changes. The mirrors out need to be redesigned because you can't see when a car is in the lane next you when it is between the rear of your car and the back door. I have purchased addition mirrors to help with these problems because I nearly caused two accidents because of poor visibility. Other than that I love the car.

2012 Impala 6 speed transmission

AI understand that this is the first year for the 6 speed transmission. I am getting th transmission changed because something is wrong with the differential. I bought the car with 3800 miles on it as a salvage vehicle, it now has 60,000. I have always had full confidence in the GM line of vehicles, and still maintain this confidence. If you notice any excessive noise in the vehicle or shifting problems, especially at lower street driving speeds, this is what led me to get mine checked out. I would still buy a GM vehicle. I just wanted to let the public know that the new 6 speed transmission for 2012 had some problems to work out.

I have to say, I have owned a few cars in my life and finally Chevy does something about making their cars great again. At one time, they were one of the best American made cars to own. But since the Asian auto makers came to America and brought their brilliant idea to the industry, its been hard to compete. Once again they have made a car that can compete, but will still need more improvements to their designs and develop a flawless design,or they will always be the underdog to the Asian market. As you all know, a Toyota engine and transmission can run forever, as long as there is oil, and with little maintenance. The engines are know to run up to 300 plus hundred thousand miles if kept maintained. This has been one of the American auto makers problems, most of the engines only last a couple of hundred thousand miles, and thats if its been well kept and built. I hope they will continue on their bettering of their cars, so we can continue buying them.

Impala LTZ THE sleeper that will wake you up!

I have a 2012 Impala LTZ, bought it in 2022 with 92xxx on the clock. It’s sad that so many people have turned on Chevrolet and act as if they don’t or can’t make a solid reliable vehicle. I like my Impala…I’ve had 3 diff generations 72 ragtop, 95 SS, now this 2012 LTZ and all of them have served me well. Nothing cheap on the car. Try driving one and take a trip. When you are done you won’t be trashing it anymore. The car will quiet the masses if they actually took it out on the road and let it show them what it’s built to do. It’s a sleeper and it does very well with comfort, handling, hp, fuel mileage and overall dependability. I don’t care what others think because of someone’s negative review. Someone who doesn’t own a Chevrolet and is one of those who just bashes them simply because they don’t like them….anyone can do that and get paid for doing it. If you don’t drive it more than a few miles on a test drive you won’t know how well the Impala can perform on a daily basis. I want to see some of those bigmouth keyboard warriors who always think they know everything about Chevrolet…. step up, design, engineer and build a better car. They can’t because they don’t know how nor have the means. Talk is cheap…so are the posting of critics who flap their yap just for a paycheck. I’ve owned Chevrolet over 40 yrs….it ain’t gonna change. Ride or Die…..BOWTIE 4 LIFE! ~ DTM

Preferred Alternative to Overrated Foreign Vehicle

AO Schoenitz, 05/06/2017

I previously owned countless SAABS, Volvos, BMWs and AUDI's and have to tip my hat that American engineers can make a much more reliable vehicle than what comes out of the factories of the before mentioned manufacturers. Agreed that one can not compare the interior of the Impala to a European mfg in terms of style but the trade off is being good friends with your owners manual to keep up with the Service requirements that will bankrupt you at the end of the day. This is the second Impala owned and was extremely impressed overall. Handling, reliability, Bluetooth, Steering Wheel Controls, MPG's and Reliability is way above avg. Aside from cheap aspects of the interior the only other gripe is the new transmission can feel sluggish at times v. the previous 4 speed. The MPG's are still honorable for the size vehicle but the updated transmission lacks the ooomph of the previous model. The vehicle is highly recommended. Its virtually impossible for you to spend the sort of money on this vehicle v. the European vehicle that require the most demanding attention to you wallet.

My 2012 Impala is one of the best driving cars I have ever been in. It has plenty of power, rides very smooth and Handles great. The Onstar system gives more accurate directions than Cars with onscreen navigation systems. I drove a lot of vehicles including some imports before buying. The Impala rides and drives as good or better than them. No it doesnt have a fancy display screen but the Onstar system works better. It also is easier to get in and out of than smaller cars.

Good Cruiser But Disappointed With Chevy's Gearing

The interior is cheap yes. But so are other cars. I can look past that due to the car being reliable. One thing I did notice is the transmission. I like that it cruises at 2k at 80. But for one, it hesitates and gear hunts. I also believe the gears to be too tall. Of course it is a huge improvement over the old impala with the 4 speed. But usually in a v6 you should not have to even cross 2.5 rpms on the tachometer before going to second gear. This car takes off like a four cylinder on an incline, and it is not lively until higher speeds are achieved. It is not bad but not good. Hopefully the newer ones are better

We bought our 2012 Impala used in 2015. Overall, it has been a very dependable car. For a mid sized car, the ride is very comfortable and the handling is very good. I call it mid sized because that's what it is compared to the full sized Chev Impalas that used to be. It has the standard features like cruise; tilt; A.C.; power windows and locks; and a few others, which is all one needs in an automobile. The more electronics you have , the more to go wrong. And over time, electronics will give you issues. With the six speed tranny and 302 H.P. V6, I get 43 miles per gallon with the cruise set at 113 km. per hour., if there is not much of a headwind. And, more than enough get up and go at any speed. I would buy another one.

I bought mine used so it had problems to begin with. the seat electrical tilt was broken at 99k. In between 99k and 140k I replaced the thermostat, thermostat sensor, water pump, transmission cooler line and the radiator. At about 110k the traction control started malfunctioning, and now i have to turn it off every time before i start driving. the resistor for the AC/Heater fan switch malfunctions so every now and again the fan doesn't blow. I have to mess with the actual plug under the glove box to get it to work. The line that connects the back window defroster came undone so that doesn't work. I gave it 3 stars because i really want to like this car. without all the little but expensive problems this would actually be a great car. I really like the engine and the pick up speed.

Purchased used with about 16k miles on it and it was a great car for a long time. Comfortable, spacious and I kept all the maintenance and oil changes done. But when it got a little over 100k miles on it the car started acting strange. It would stall and lunge in traffic, I almost got hit by another vehicle. I had a friend that had one that was somewhere between a 2000-2005 model it was beige with the Impala emblem on the back and since she loved hers so much I decided to try this one. The Stability track light would come on and off, it started jerking so I took it to a garage. They kept it for a while and never could figure it out. It's been one thing and another so I will sell, trade.. something if I can't get it running. They say everyone can get a lemon sometimes and it hurts as I wanted to buy American as they say.

This car is a great long distance traveling car; just don't go up in the mountains. The car doesn't handle very well but thats were you get the smooth ride from. One thing Chevrolet definantly needs to work on is the transmission. The transmission takes a good second-second and a half to shift to the correct gear when your stepping on it. Once again, do not take this car in the mountains when theres only a two way road and you need to pass someone. You have to get used to it that the transmission will lag so you have to step on it a bit earlier. But once it gets into gear, it does pull pretty good. The car seems to be overpriced when compared to the Charger which is a better car.

What is the difference in th LS and LS Fleet? My summer tires require 225/55r/17 but my winter tires Murray’s gave me with car are 225/55/16? Got me! And on the door panel says the same thing summer tires that came on the car with original crome rims were 225/55r/17. Go figure Help if you can please. By the way I’m up in Winnipeg Manitoba Canada

When I bought my 2012 Chevrolet Malibu, it had only 15,000kms on it. The vehicle was very low maintenance., gave me a smooth ride., handled nicely & I had no trouble parking the vehicle (due to its size). Just before 2018 I noticed rusting. It first started over the rear wheels, then progressed very rapidly along the driver's door., which cause a huge piece of the door to come off. I had the car checked over by a guy who specializes in detailing & he advised me not to spend the money fixing up the rust.. It would cost too much & the rust would only return. When doing some research it was stated that GM didn't drill holes in the bottom of the doors to enable water to escape, & they failed to use a sealant. No wonder cars were rusting. I bought a newer vehicle in 2020 which meant I only got 8yrs out of my Impala. Whenever I see a person with a 2012 Impala I advise them of what they could be facing. I take my 2018 Malibu to a very well known rust protection company to help ensure that the possibility of rusting is deterred. Frankly I did love my 2012 Impala; but where my 2018 Chevrolet Malibu is concerned, I like it, but don't love it.

Pro: It's large. Cons: Everything else. Aside from it's generic overall design, and terribly poor road handling, the Impala is very generic in both design and feel. Even with a fully loaded LTZ, I can't help but feel disappointed, and honestly a little embarrassed every time I drive this car. After all this IS used heavily as a fleet vehicle, and not only that, everyone seems to own one (why? I'll never know). Pulling this vehicle into a parking spot is near impossible on the first try- same with just about every oversized vehicle GM pumps out. Be prepared to feel every bump in the pavement too, as well as intense body lean in about every corner. Do yourself a favor don't buy this car
