The Real 4 Door Sports Car

2002 BMW M5 4dr Sedan (4.9L 8cyl 6M)

I bought it because there really is nothing else in its class. If you want a very fast and very comfortable big sedan with a 6 speed, this is your only choice. I owned an M3 before, and the M5 is much more comfortable/luxurious. The M5 does give up quite a bit of agility to the M3, but it makes up for that with the quiet and comfortable ride. Have a very thorough pre-purchase inspection done as there are some very expensive parts on this car. Look for a well-maintained car that was owned by an enthusiast. Reliability is very good for a car in this class, but you will be in for a surprise if you are not used to BMW maintenance/repair costs. They need all cooling parts replaced @ 5 years.

the m5 is possibly the greatest car ever. It's faster than a 911, more functional, higher quality, etc. I love the 6 speed transmission (its amazing to drive), the stereo, the quality of the interior; everything is absolutely amazing. If you can get your hands on one, do it. I have never had so much fun driving a car, and even my one hour daily commute is fun! In general, there is nothing to complain about, although many might complain about the gas mileage. I say this: is you can handle spending $75000 on a car, i guess you could probably also handle paying a little extra money on gas. AWESOME!

I've owned a GS300 and a 540i and spent a fair amount of time in an S500 and a 750il and none of the comes close. The M5 is without a doubt the most reponsive, most enjoyable, most attractive production sedan on the planet.

Amazing handling, great build, great interior features and quality construction inside (instead of the cheap plastics of American muscle cars). Everything including the dashboard and door panels are high quality durable leather. Roof and some panels are all full premium suede. Yes cornering may not be as great as a true 2 door sports car. But it can beat any other sports sedan out there in cornering. If you want to improve cornering and stability to a large extent, like me go for something like a Dinan suspension, struts, light weight wheels etc.

The car is nicknamed the "Beast" for a reason. The car is simply amazing! It will leave your heart in the back seat as the beast comes to 60 mph under 5 seconds. All the gears pull strong. The M5 Driving Experience put on by BMW for every owner explores the real capabilities of the beast. Then and only then do you appreciate the enginneering and performance. The M5 stops quicker than a 911 (that says something.)

I bought this car and picked it up in Germany to enjoy it in the autobahn. At 155 mph, it feels like you are driving at 70 in any other car. The power it has is simply amazing and I have been able to leave more than one 911 racer in my dust! The only complain (if any) is that I have had to take the vehicle back to the dealership for minor repairs (loose backseat blet, noise HVAC)

The M5 is everything the car magazines claim it to be. It is a very solid well built car that not only handles well but has endless power. The ride on the highway is smooth and well controlled. It is much smoother than you would expect for a car with 35 series tires on the rear and 40 series tires on the front. The car is the best I've ever owned.

I keep telling myself this car is impractical, it's bad in the snow, I pay huge taxes to own it in Connecticut, it's not so great on gas, it's even had a couple of problems with the VANOS system (promptly and apologetically repaired while I drove a loaner 5-series), but in the end, Ican't part with her. This car is so nimble yet so rock-steady, so fluid yet so precise that I can't ever imagine being happy with another car. I'm just spoiled for life now.

Next best previously owned car was a 91- 300Z Turbo; great car, but no comparison to the M5. The M5 Driving Experience in SC really helped to learn about controlling THE BEAST. Perfect choice for the family, 4-doors, luxury, safety, luggage (split-folddown seats) and daily drive. Better choice for me when I have a need for speed!!

The 2002 BMW M5 is perfect for the family person in need of 5 seats but who quitely longs for a 2 seat screamer like an 911 turbo. The only knock I have on the car is that it does things almost two effortlessly. The steering is a touch light and you are insulated to some degree from its raw power by its size. Simply the best of the best sedans.

Of all of the high line vehicles that I have had the pleasure of owning or driving, the M5 is the very best of the best. It is a highly versitile automobile... The proverbial wolf in sheeps clothing. It nicely transports 5 adults in stunning luxury, and at the same time will play competitively with any other vehicle (including sportbikes) on the road. It is absolutely amazing on tight country roads.

I bought the car as a CPO and the clutch went out one week later and I had to fight with the dealership to replace it under warranty! The clutch is a known weak link on the M5. Beware: it's the same as the clutch on the "regular" 5-series cars. I hope BMW upgrades the clutch on the 2007 manual M5. The performance is amazing and rivals my Corvette, but this car seats 5! I love the way the exhaust sounds on start up and under full acceleration! I'm going to have to upgrade the suspension to get it to handle like the Vette though.

I purchased the car with 22k miles on it. The previous owner had taken good care of it. The car handles well and has lots of power. Driving in rush hour traffic can be a pain with the 6- speed manual. Dealership has been execllent with service. This car is as powerful as the 1998 Corvette I owned, yet has seating for 5. Insurance is costly (even for a 59 year old with a good driving record). Gas mileage average is about 18 mpg around town, which is great for a car with this kind of power. Extremely quiet and tightly put together. Has a great looking understated appearence. Probably the best car I have ever owned.

This is the car for people who like to drive and don't have any desire to impress anyone, with the exception of young car enthusiasts who when you pass them will invariably give you the "thumbs up" and not "the finger". Everyone else will wonder how your grandmother's car can go so fast around corners.

This is my second M5. Had the 2000, it was hot stiff and strong. The new model seems faster and is a dream to drive. The improvements were minor on the surface. The hardest to believe is that the 2002 is a vastly improved version of the original. the best of the best!

I have purchased 27 new Vehicles in my life and this one has been the best purchase of my life. Yes, I had to pay full MSRP but got what I wanted. Enough toys to keep me happy and enough power to push me deep into my seat. I almost waited for the new 7 but I figured I'll wait till they have the bugs worked out of them.

Best all around car I have ever owned and my fifth BMW overall. I will drive this one till it dies. A lot of people have commented on high maintenance costs but I challenge anyone to say any high performance car from Audi, Mercedes or any other automaker is cheaper to maintain. They all cost $$$ for the performance. If you want cheap maintenance costs, by a Focus. Mine is a driver, not a show piece. But if I wanted a show piece, I would have bought a painting. I wanted a drivers car with the comfort of four doors. Sure there are faster car now, but they also have a multitude of complicated computers and active suspensions and systems that cost a fortune to fix. I have had mine for 3 years now, and all I have done is tires, brakes, oil and gas. My only complaint about the E39 M5 is the inability to change the nav/radio out in the car without a major investment due to the DSP system in the car. But like anything, if you are creative, you can get the system work with a tablet.

They say, use the proper tool for the job. This car is the tool for a proper driving experience. I couldn't say enough about it. It's great on the highway, with ample power to overtake the lemmings in the fast lane. It's agile on back roads, and twisties for spirited driving. It's true, they are a bit of bite to the coin purse when they break, but fortunately they have a bullet proof build quality, and breaks are infrequent. It's nice to have the ponies on tap at the press of a button. The car definitely wants to go when you press the sport button. Throttle response quickens, power and torque pin you back in the seat, steering tightens up, transmission shifts quicker. Truly a drivers car. Not for the person who just wants a personal conveyance.

I've driven 911's and Jag XK8 and this is by far the best of the lot. Doesn't have the stying of the jag but the incredible performance more than makes up for that. While the sound system is great I often turn it off to listen to the heart quickening sound of those 400 horses! There is no more fun than having granny waving from the back seat as I blow past the stunned guy in the vette next to me!
