What a Gem
I traded in my 2003 530i for a certified pre-owned A3 with 36,275 miles on it. I couldn't be happier. It is a phenomenal vehicle, and all for under 30k. It all starts with the engine. The 2.0T is a great powerplant, and I love the short throws on my 6 speed manual transmission. The low end torque really gets the car going. The steering is very responsive and the ride is very stable. It is such a blast to drive. It is a coin flip between this A3 and a 323i as the best driving cars I have ever owned. The quality of the interior build is much better than the BMWs I have just come out of (a 323i then 530i). The fuel economy is not bad (25mpg for me) for such a fun car to drive
A3 Tire noise
I love the car, however, at 7500 miles I complained about tire noise. The dealer's response was to replace the tires. I felt that this answer was inadequate. Am I supposed to replace my tires every 7500 miles? Audi obviously knows about the problem on the A3 but refuses to do anything about it. This has soured me on the car. I will never buy another Audi.

A bit afraid
DSG is great - for those whole like to control the RPMs but are affraid of traffic and 3rd pedal...your reward is finally here. The 2.0 engine is much stronger and torque is higher as well. It is not as noisy as the old 1800 block. No turbo lag observed. Very strong brakes, thanks to oversized discs. Stiff, and has no "dipping" on sharper curves. Has a sporty feel for sure but is very easy to handle and navigate due to smaller size. Inerior: I am about 6'2 nd plenty of space (head, shoulder, leg). Rear space is fine too, great cargo for this size class.
My best car ever
Fun to drive specially on my everyday route going to work, it's a long very winding road. Great performance for a small car. It looks very deceiving because it's a small car anf a station wagon look. But man.... they are wrong to pick this car for a race. This car has a lot of power on it.
Car is too popular
I purchased a brilliant red with DSG, Sport, Convenience, Cold Weather, Stereo and Xenon packages. These cars drive like they are on a track. It is great to have a car that drives really well, gets good mileage and you can fit equipment into and onto. DSG shifting is a real piece of technological achievement. Interior is perfect for my family of three plus our dog.
Best car I have owned!
I have always wanted to own an Audi and now I know why! This is truly a great car - comfortable, reliable and fun to drive. Living on an island I cannot enjoy it to the max, but still appreciate everything about it. A few weeks ago, the car's brakes and handling saved my life - another car turned directly in front of me, I hit the brakes (no locking) and once I had slowed down, I touched the steering wheel to the right and got around the other vehicle - if I were in most other cars, I probably would not be writing this now!
Weeeehooooooo!!!
Nothing compares to my A3! What a personality it has!!! It's sexy looking, quick and heaps of fun to drive. There are not many on the road and people constantly stop and ask about the car... WARNING: Watch the pedal because you will be doing 85pmh and not even realize it... :)
2 Thumbs up from a car guy
I am an automotive engineer with a large transplant company from Japan...this was my 1st German car. I am very impressed! Interior/exterior fit/finish is Japanese quality, material quality is tops, handling is extremely good (I got the sport suspension-a little harsh, excuse me, good road input, but that's the way car guys like it!), acceleration is a blast! On 2 lane back roads, down shift, tag the gas and you're by grandma and the semi in a wink of the eye! No turbo lag and terrific fuel economy. Who could ask for anything more? Well, my guests said they could use more rear seat leg room-I think I'll leave them at home next time. This is not your wife's soccer wagon!
Audi A3 is my favorite car I ever had!
It's such a cool car. Less trips to the gas station is a big plus and its got room for two kids, a stroller and a trip to the grocery store! Audi has found the answer to needing a mom car but still wanting something fun and awesome to drive. Thanks Audi!
All Fun All the Time
The A3 is great fun to drive. The 2.0 turbo engine is fantastic. More fun than my old supercharged Mercedes. I've always liked to do my own shifting and have had manual transmissions. When I drove the DRG automatic I was won over. I can't imagine going back after after driving this quick smooth automatic, or electronic manual as Audi refers to it. I haven't had any problems with my Audi. It's always a joy to get in and drive.
Awesome
This car is awesome!!! Fun to drive, fast and plenty of room in back seats for adults. We had two child seats and very easy to get children in and out.
like driving a humming bird
I haven't found a single design flaw on this car. Everything is perfect. Quality is typical Audi (i.e., very good) but the dash has a somewhat plasticky look (a different rubberized surface would have a nicer look, I think). Also, I'm not a big fan of the aluminum trim on the sport model. That said, this car is an amazing drive. Powerful, fast, almost no turbo lag. No one has outmuscled it on the freeway yet.
FUN!!
What a dandy little car. 2.0L with DSG tranny makes for a potent powerplant in this sports wagon(?). Much versatility, fuel efficient, comfortable, agile... just a blast to drive. Get one, if it has enough room for how you intend to use it.
Great things come in small packages!
One part German luxury car, one part German sports car, one part family haulerwith loads of Euro panache! The DSG sets this car apart from all others. It works beautifully. On a recent drive across the state on a two- lane road where speeds of 55-60 are common, 33 mpg was the average. A very comfortable road car with loads of performance on tap.
Great car to own and drive.
I have nearly 5000 miles in three months and the driving has been great. I have the Sport package and love the aluminum trim. The car has a quality feel and the engine is great. It is easy to zip up to 80 miles an hour without realizing it. Highway mileage is 27-32 which is a plus. I have the navigation system with Bose stereo - fabulous. I am glad I bought this car and plan to enjoy it for many years. It is a fun car to drive.
A3 2.0 Turbo After 10,000 miles
I bought this car last October after gas hit $3/gal (the first time) and after test driving the others. I have owned many luxury and sporty cars over the years from the BMW 7 and Mercedes S sedans to the BMW M3. I have to say that this car is a perfect blend of fun, function and economy. The DSG transmission is fantastic, the hatchback with fold-down seats plenty roomy, and the gas mileage (~28 mpg) is great for today's environment. We just turned over 10K miles and have had no problems with the car at all! My only complaint is the Pirelli tires -- too much road noise. I plan to own this car for a long time! Congratulations to Audi.
One year later, still going strong
I did an Edmunds review on this car, a year ago when I bought it, and I am still very happy. It is reliable, fast, very useful due to its hatch and folding seats and very comfortable and fun to drive. I added 245 size tires which give the car better traction and handling, but do scrape a little at the back, but well worth it. Currently my mileage is 7700 miles (hard driving), and the car was bought in CA, USA. I still think the car is an excellent buy, but time will tell.
SPORTback
The Audi A3 sportback is a great vehicle to own and drive. With a great engine, good fuel economy, and stylish European looks, the 2006 Audi A3 sportback really lives up to its name as a SPORTback. It is an awesome first car.
Fun :)
We picked up our A3 last weekend and haven't stopped driving since!!! We went with the base model, No leather, 6 Speed. The only thing we wished we would of got is navigation, but we solved that with a dash mounted Tom Tom GPS unit.
Mature and Sporty
I chose the A3 because I was looking for a car that was mature (not a boy toy), functional (can I fit a large screen TV ?), and sporty (fun to drive). The A3 is a perfect match. The DSG is fantastic - but took some getting used to as I would tend to forget I was in manual mode. My only regret was not getting the Sport model, because the suspension is a little softer than what I am used to, but then the ride is more luxurious as well, and I did ask for a mature ride. I'm getting about 22 MPG in mixed driving, but think I'd do better if I quit playing with the paddles. At first I didn't think I'd want the Open Sky roof, but now I am very happy I got it.
3 months & 10000 miles later!
I've only had this vehicle 3 mos. but have managed to put it through its paces around so. cal. The car is everything I expected it to be. Practical, sexy, fun to drive. No cost maintenance has saved me a lot. The DSG is smooth and effortless, yet aggressive. The new 2.0 FSI engine is awesome. Even grandma would feel like Schumacher behind the wheel. Props to Audi for making an affordable, luxury, performance, "hatchback"!
Those who "get it" love it.
Best car I have ever owned, period. The A3 is one of the best cars on the road and yet you will be hard pressed to find one next to you at the stop light. Most will not understand this car and just write it off as a "wagon" but the people who "get it" drool over it when they see it. I have enjoyed driving this car so much that I often go for drives just to enjoy it. I bought my 2.0T before the 3.2 was available. I have not driven the 3.2 for fear of wanting to upgrade. The power is more than sufficient in the 2.0. I got almost every option on the car except Nav which does send the price way up but its still a great car and a good value.
It's About Time
Handles great! Quick response. Great mileage. Need more cars of this caliber. Got rid of my SUV. Audi should offer more engine option for this car as they do in Europe.
Purchased after Test Drive
Faster than the A4. Less expensive than the BMW. Automatic DSG shifts like a dream.
2006 Audi A3 2.0T
The Audi A3 combines all of the fun-to-drive characteristics of the Audi TT and the VW Golf GTI (with which it shares a platform), with an elegant design and a real backseat that adults can use.
Proud Owner
I can't find anything bad to say about it. It's been in Italy for over 6 years and just got here in the States. I test drove it, fell in love with it and bought it 2 weeks later. It's fun to drive, and the exterior makes a statement every time you see it. The interior is very comfortable, typical Audi style. Great buy, great fuel economy. I just got the base model, and it came with all the features I wanted. No leather, but great character!
New A3 DSG owner in Austin
Just purchased an 06 A3 DSG with Sport, Bose, Xenons, Open Sky. Initial thoughts (<1 week) very good. Worried I'd pay too much for too little car. Not so-it's a BARGAIN. Great power, smooth engine. Very solid/quiet on the highway (~80). Suspension is definitely sport oriented and is slightly busier than I expected. Not harsh, but you do feel minor road imperfections. Handling excellent, very little body roll. Steering effort nice and firm - perhaps too artifically so at speed and too light at low speeds. Nitpicking. Engine sounds slightly dieselish at idle. Exhaust "blats" during upshifts, some may deem annoying. Seats are fantastic with the sport package (I'm 6'1", 215lbs). Quality car.
Great car!
Just test drove the A3 6-sp manual and was pleasently surprised. The engine is great, inside is beautiful. Outside design is one of the best for the hatch. The car is a dream, smooth, quiet, fast, comfortable. It was 4 of us in the car, including a child seat in the back, behind the passenger, and enough room. With all of us and full tank, the car is accelerating in the 6th gear.
wonderful
I have had this car for about three weeks and I love it. Coming from a Camry family it has been like traveling to a new world with the amount of handling and road grip the Audi has especially on the winding souther california roads. The powerseats of the premium are really the only things I wish I could have withy my sports package. But really, the interior is classy and functional, the leather doesn't get really hot in the sun, and I have black ext. and black int. The only thing you have to get used to is that the car is slightly jumpy when you hit the gas, and when you park it rolls a couple of inches. The other options I got were the open sky and xenon headlights and the DSG.
Nice, practical, Little, fun car.
It is a very nice, peppy car with a turbocharged four, and still gets a 25 mpg int the city and 32 on the highway. Acceleration a bit jerky at the beginning, but once you are in seconds gear, the power starts pouring out. I was very impressed with the DSG automatic transmission, the shifts were so fast I did even feel the car jolt as it did it. Nice exhaust note for a 4 cylinder, and its looks are somtimes missed in a bland color, and aren't truely appreciated until you see the car in the brillant red color, (my color). It truely brings out the coolness of the car.
The Ultimate Drive!
I just picked up my new Audi A3 this week and I absolutely love it. I test drove many cars from 25k-35k looking for one that was actually fun to drive. The Sport package is well worth the cash. This baby hugs corners with ease. The OpenSky roof is great and opens the cabin up to the outside. Interior room is much better then that of the A4, due to the transversely mounted 2.0 T engine. With options my car came to $31850. Not bad for an car that it! The new DSD Auto is so smooth and is perfectly mated to the 2.0T engine. There is no torque steer present at any speed. The A3 is so much fun to drive. Do yourself a favor and go test drive one today!
This car rocks!!!
I was in the market for an SUV and when I saw the gas mileage you get on those things I started to look for something different and came across this beauty. The handling is amazing, the drive, the features I got my with the GPS and of course the gas mileage is better than I expect, plus every one turns their heads when they see it.
New A3 a Fine Addition To the Audi Line
I have only owned the car for a week, and have put on about 300 miles, but it is solid, quiet and fast. Yes, it is rather expensive for its size, but the list of features is long and all are useable.
Best Decision We Ever Made
This is a fabulous car! Worth every penny that we spent on it. Our model has the 2.0t with the DSG transmission. It is extremely fun to drive whether it's around town or on the highway, and it has ample room for adult passengers in the back seat! We really didn't want to buy a fuller sized wagon, but this car is a big car in small shoes. Plenty of room, plenty of versatility... with the handling of a sports car. If you are in the market for a car of this type, consider the Audi A3. It won't disappoint you!
A3 is Impossible to lease in NY.
This car has lived up to all that has been written in car magazine and on the Web. The New 2.0T with the DSG is a terrific match. The car is very well balanced to drive in stop and go point & shoot city traffic and on the highway. It has great reflexes and a top notch Interior design. The biggest problem is that I see NONE on the road in NY. These cars at 30K lease out similar to a loaded A6. Audi has created the worst lease financing and residual #'s. It makes it impossible to lease and is surely sending folks elsewhere.
WOW
Quicker and more fun do drive than by Audi allroad! Love it in the city as it is easier to park. The best sound system I ever heard in a car.
amazing value
Incredible. After test driving all the luxury vehicles and being shocked at what they were asking for price, I found my Audi. The price is not a reflection of what you get... you get so much more!! I love my new car!!
Amazing
I had a Mercedes-Benz C-Class coupe before this- that was a terrible car. The A3 is so much better. It has a much peppier engine, a more luxurious interior, it's much better styled, and is less money. Love the innovation- I got mine with the Open Sky sunroof.
Nice but UGLY
I test drove the new A3. It was very responsive and quick. No noticeable turbo lag which is common in most turbo cars. The interior was well designed but it is an ugly car on the outside. It looks like an oversized VW GTI. If they kept it the same size as the GTI it wouldn't be as ugly. It should've been aborted in the design stage.
Basic and Bold
After three trips to the dealership, test drives of the manual, DSG, Base, Sport and Premium packages, I came away with a base model with 6-Speed MT and Open Sky. In the end, the base model was such a great value, I couldn't justify spending thousands more for a couple more bells and whistles. This was after driving the Saab 9-2X (they would have had to pay me to buy that one) and Volvo S40 (good value and affordable option pkgs, but not even close on the "wow" and driving fronts). If you are looking for something in the $25-30K range, you HAVE to at least drive this car. If they don't have the exact one you want, you can order it from the factory through the dealership like I did.
More fun than the A4 or TL
I didn't start out looking at this car. I had narrowed it down to the A4, Acura TL, or Volvo S40 T5. However after test driving it it was by far the most fun to drive of the group. Also, considering I was buying an auto so the wife could drive on occasions, that awesome DSG tranny made a huge difference. Take it from me I never thought I'd be yapping about a transmission but it changes the performance substantially. Styling wise I prefer a sedan, but this has a cool look. I've had my people comment on the cars good looks, which may be cause it's a new design. Either way it represnts well, and it functional as all get out. Faster, More Fun, Less Money- It Rocks!
Awesome Car
We were looking for a car that would be both practical and fun - and we found it. None of the competitors came close to the combination of fuel economy, great handling, fast acceleration, good looks, practical storage space, and overall fun in the upper 20s price range. All I can say is that we love this car - it's all about fahrvegnuggen!
the first car I've every really loved
I had been waiting for a couple of years, for a sporty, upscale, SMALL car. To me the WRX is unrefined, the RSX too impractical, and Mazda 3 is nice, but somewhat cheap feeling. So this was the car for me, and I couldn't be happier with it. There are so many thoughtful details that aren't obvious at first that make this car really special. For example, it comes with 2 different keys, and for each key, remembers the last setting on the dual-climate control. It is so fun to drive, full of safety features, and has plenty of room in back with the seats down (my dog approves!)
Driving experience
Really fun to drive, excellent comfort and the sound of the powertrain is pleasing.
All smiles!
I love this car. We traded in our 2003 BMW 3 series because we saw the car sitting at the dealership and were looking for a car with more room. We drove it and fell in love with it instantaneously. The interior is beautiful, the power and handling is great and we get over 31 mpg! The rear seats fold flat giving you a cargo hole that can almost hold a dryer!! The rear seating is a little short on leg room, but the BMW wasn't any better.
My God, this thing is FAST!!!
I traded an 02 Kia Rio Cinco for this A3. I have DSG and Open Sky as my only options, Lava Gray Pearl on Gray Cloth. Went on road trip from LA to Sacramento (and back) and it purred the whole time. 85 on cruise control and stil got right at 30 mpg (even with the grapevine). This car is worth every penny. It is the fastest car I have ever driven and I haven't seen a single other one on the road yet. The only reason I gave it a 9 on comfort is because the center cosole seems huge, and it has the impression of being "tight". I should also mention that Entry and Exit is EXCELLENT (not climbing out of the Rio or a Honda - ie. not too low to the ground). I really love this car
Perfect car for us
This car is so fun to drive, everyday commute or trip to mountain. 6-speed DSG with 200 HP works like a dream, you don't feel a thing when it shifts. We are big fan of hatchback (or so called compact wagons) Cabin looks or feels great. We factory ordered our Silver, DSG, premium, sound, cold weather Pkg and open sky. We are pretty happy to pay 31K for it plus 2.9% APR.
Move over Fun, here is the A3
After owning two VW GTI's, a VR6 and 1.8T i decided to jump up to the next level and get an A3. The 2.0T is amazing, more interior room and feel than the larger A4 without the added weight. The DSG is absolutely amazing and i am a huge manual tranny guy. Sitting in traffic in "D" and having the use of the paddles is so fun. Audi did an awesome job with the steering and feel of the A3, plus put versatility and economy in the same package. Torque and power delivery of the 2.0T is never-ending with no drop off in power until after 6500rpms. I mean 207lb/ft for 3000rpms YES PLEASE. Audi did a great job with this car and the sales numbers are proving it.
Great Decision
After initially looking for an SUV, this purchase was a great decision. The A3 is a blast to drive, particularly when using the DSG transmission. The Open-sky is very cool and keeps the whole interior bright but slightly noisy when open. The Bose stereo is imperative. I'm 6'0 and have a little trouble finding a comfortable seat position, but thankfully have the auto driver seat. The only problem I have with the car is the narrow space between the brake and accelerator pedals where I often kick the brake when trying to reach the accelerator.
A for Audi
The car is sporty and fun to drive. The DSG shifts smoothly as manual clutchless or automatic. Car handles great. No Turbo Lag. Fit and Finish is of a Luxury Car quality.
