Since the 2002 model year, all TDIs have had either an 80k-mile or 100k-mile timing belt replacement interval. As for the cost of replacement, there are TDI experts in most states who will do the work for well under $1000, and this includes replacing not just the TB and tensioner but also the roller/idlers, the water pump, the serpentine belt, and any of the various torque-to-yield bolts which should not be ... Is this possible? Leather was not an option & I'd love to have it, the lint my black cloth seats collect is driving me crazy! I called the dealer where I picked up my Golf and they said it would cost me $4,500.00!!!! What? I've heard about leatherseats.com and they say their covers are, "side airbags and heated seats and folding rear bench COMPATIBLE" but my VW dealer said that would ... Read More

Go look at 2001 or 2002 GTI or Golf and check the VIN. The 1st digit of VIN is country of manufacture and W is Germany, 1 USA, 3 Mexico, and 9 Brazil. Second digit is manufacturer and A is Audi, B is VW Brazil, and V is Volkswagen. The link you posted is wrong. The robots are the same but the people installing seats, wiring, trim and etc. are not. ... Read More

In response to your statement of "higher octane for the turbo" I am guessing that you mean the 1.8T in the Golf. The 1.8T is available in GTI but no longer is available in Golf for 2002. Expect a redesign on the MK4 platform (current Golf) in 2005. The new Golf will appear in Germany in 2003 and in the past the US has received new designs 2 years after Europe. ... Read More

(And fyi, I just deleted my previous message after reading your post more clearly.) While you're waiting for feedback from VW Golf owners, I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents. As it has been explained to me, TMV may not necessarily reflect the absolute best price, but it helps you to negatiate a "fair price" based on the average price that other people have paid for a particular vehicle in ... $299 for splash guards and $499 for paint/fabric protection?!?! That's not just stealing but insulting the intelligence of customers. You can protect the fabric with a can of Scotch-Guard for less than $10!! As for the paint protection, I hope they are not going back to that ridiculous "acid rain protection" sales gimmick again. Acid rain is not a new phenomenom. It also happens to be a subject that I deal ... Read More

Looked at 2002 VW's at Team VW in Merrillville, IN and they had a sticker in addition to the factory sticker that listed additional equipment. The additional equipment included splash guards for $295.00 and paint/fabric protection for $499.00. Does anyone besides me feel that $295.00 for splash guards is nearly stealing?

Do you really think the problem cars that are discussed here are the norm for VW Golf? I do not. Did you know that VW Golf for 2001 is recommended by Consumer Reports? It is. Quite a few problems that people have seem to be symptoms of poor dealer service. This can be cured by finding a different dealer or knowledgable independent mechanic. Sure there are lemons out there, this is ... Read More

Golf weighs 2934 lbs. Echo weighs 2160 lbs. That is a big difference. The Golf comes standard with 6 airbags. Echo standard with 2. Golf has standard ABS and Echo is very difficult to even find one with ABS. Golf has 5 star crash test result (highest possible) from NHTSA and Echo has ratings of 4 star and 3 star. Toyota Camry better crash test results than Echo. Option the Echo ... Read More

You can "dial" up the Golf 1.8T to 170HP if you don't mind "dialling out" your warranty. If VW is not supplying 1.8Ts for the 2002 Golf and Jetta, what will be the replacement engine?
