This is a late post considering your initial post date, but I hope you snatched up that gem for that kind of price! I am now on my 3rd used SAAB and knock on wood, my out of pocket expense has been minimal. I can say without question that they have been the most reliable and predictable cars I have ever owned. One of my best friends has a 900 5 ... Read More
There are quite a few Technical Service Bulletins on this problem related to the air mixing damper shaft within the heating/AC system. The dealer should be able to readily call up all the instructions he needs to fix the problem. Looks like some little plasticky parts are involved and maybe an hour labor---at least just from looking at the instructions. So maybe couple hundred bucks? I am in the market for a new car, I have test drove a couple of these cars....and love them! I am coming off of a BMW 528 wagon, which I will miss dearly, but it is not in my budget right now to buy another. Can I just bemoan the fact that my 2002 9-5 Arc V6, which cost me 33k new, is worthless about now? Maybe someone will tell me no worries, that I got good value out of it. I dunno. I've had a similar problem with my 2002 Saab 9-5 (with ~68K miles on it). Symptoms sounded exactly like yours - had it checked by a mechanic when the check engine light came on eventually. It was caused by a faulty crankshaft position sensor. Got it replaced, car seems to behaving well now. Should cost you ~ $120, not too bad. Do get it changed - the good news is that ... Read More

I bought a used 2002 Saab 9-5 Aero in January 2005 from an independent mechanic with whom I have been doing business since 1991. The car was just off lease and had 35,000 miles. I am on my 3rd 9.5. First two (2000 and 2002) we're V-6 powered, my 2007 is, of course a 2.3 260 HP turbo, Aero in this case. I used to be annoyed when folks picked on the V-6, I loved the power and smoothness of that engine, although that asymetrical turbo seemed to cause a weird "elastic" throttle response. Anyway, between the two V-6's, I put on combined 50,000 + ... Read More
I can't speak for Saab's but I had a similar problem on my GMC Sierra. The ABS control module went out and the dealer wanted $700.00 for a new one and $700 to put it in. I got the info from MSN,they said the reliability for 9-5 wagon made in 2003 is better than 2002 and 2001.But, I still got the info from JD Power, they said the reliability for 9-5 wagon made in 2001 is better than 2002 and 2003. It really confused me. Anyone can help me? I'm gonna buy it soon. Thanks.
I bought my 01 9-5 at the end of its 3 yr lease. I did not get any additional warranty (still had 1 yr left on original warranty). When I bought mine, the dealers used prices were typically a few ... Read More
Actually, it's got nothing to do with a manual transmission. I have a automatic 2002 Saab Linear - I get ~34 mpg on the highway (I280 in California) for my daily commute at about 70mph. Bought the car new, a little over 60K miles on it. I get about 24 mpg for city traffic.
I have a 2002 9-5 Linear with Automatic Transmission with about 57,000 miles. Just took it on a trip last week from Minneapolis to Kansas City, MO. Over 500 miles on one tank of gas. Hi. Did you ever get a response to your questions? I have a 2002 9-5, approx. 65k miles, and am having the exact same problems. I usually just let my car "warm up" for 2 minutes before I drive, but I'd rather get it actually fixed. Did your friend get her Saab fixed and, if so, how? Thanks!

I had a 2002 Arc with the v-6. Engine and performance wise, I loved this car. And having driven a 4-cyl Saab a couple of times, I preferred the v-6's ride myself. Plus, the fit and finish of my Saab was spot on -- everything was solid as a rock. Best build quality and materials of any car I've ever owned. And yet, I just traded mine in, at only 45k ... You're right, Hersheytx1, consumers should absolutely negotiate the selling prices of the vehicle that they want to lease. However, Saab is a little different than Jeep in that the cash incentives that it provides on vehicles are not compatible with its special lease program. Huh????Did you read the question the man posed or my answer??It had nothing to do with negotiating the car's price(cap.cost)at inception. It addressed negotiating the OFF-LEASE price of the car.
For sure! You need to know the sale price and it needs to be as low as possible. The interest payment on the lease is based on this. The residual amount is usually a percentage of the sale price so if you lower the sale price, you lower the residual. Your payment is simply depreciation amount + interest + taxes (if any). I would not lease without these three firm numbers. ... Read More

Local dealer still has a new 2002 Aero 5-spd that he offered for $31,500 (MSRP is $40K and change). This includes $500 owner loyalty and what I think is a hefty discount. Am concerned only about the reputed turbo lag and sloppy shifting, which my brief test drive seemed to confirm. ... Read More
My Aero is a 2002, and the 0-60 is somewhere in the mid 6's. My old 900 SE was in the low 6's. I'm not sure of the 1/4 time. I may take it to a local strip and find out when spring rolls around and I get better tires. As far as synthetic, I use standard weights 10W30 in winter, 10W40 spring/fall and 15W50 in the summer (I think that's ... Read More
Hm, my neighbor had already 3 repairs on the 6 cyl in his 2002 9-5 Arc - all coolant leaks. He is happy he leased and didn't buy used. It appears that 9-5 Linear sedan carries about 5K in rebates right now until 1/2 --> carsdirect.com target price is something like USD 30K - pretty close to those $44K Canadian. If I needed a new car, I'd probably go for it ... Read More
Hi, I test drove a Subaru Outback sedan/vdc-H6. It was a 2002. It was fun, and I was impressed. I took it in a big parking lot and did some tight turns. Fair bit of roll to it, but otherwise, very nice and smooth engine. Man the heater fan is noisey, though. My problem is I don't fit. Even with the seats all the way down, my hair and left side ... I don't know how pricing for new Saabs is in Canada (my home country) or the US right now, but in Belgium I was just given the full diplomatic discount on the 9,5 Vector Estate I ordered for my wife. As an expat I am eligible for a discount, but not the more than 25% off list I got. That not only took care of the VAT(21% here) but covered the ... Read More
A few comments - the remaining 2002 Linears are getting good discounts here in Calgary. I have seen 5 sedans offered in Saturdays paper for $37k ($23k US) and 1 wagon for $40k ($25k US). All new with I think 2.8% lease. This is a steal IMHO! If I didn't already have one I would now. I don't think you will find a similarily equipped BMW that can touch this. Even ... Read More
Hard to say right now. It really depends on what global platform a new 9-5 will be built on. There's some speculation out there but no commitment, AFAIK. Market forces will dictate some of these decisions (a new 9-5 will need an AWD version and I've even heard a new V8 could be developed for it). I spoke to some SAAB officials at SEMA and they weren't too informative; prolly cuz ... Read More
Have a 2001 with 35K, 4 Dr. 9.5 SE. Yes, Saab has certified plan, same as BMW with 6 yr. and 75 (or 100) from in service date. Changed it effective 2002 models to match BMW, Audi and Merc., V-6 engine is very reliable, have not heard of any problems except noisy power steering gear. Re: 1999 vs. 2000 V6, unchanged, some changes in 2002 Model. Have driven both 170 and ... Read More
I live in Chicago and use the Saab Exchange in Highland park, which I think just moved to Lake bluff. I can not say enough about there service. They reat you right and are always very nice. Closest to a Lexus dealer & well worth the 30 min ride from Chicago. I shopped at Perillo for the saab new and the salesman did not even want to get up from his ... Read More
Just brought home my new 2002 9-5 Arc wagon. Have any other saab owners had to get used to the funky headrests? My last car offered no real neck support at all, and the saab felt fine on the 2 test drives I took, but now that I have it, I'm getting a little ache in my neck and upper back. I'm telling myself I just need to get used to ... Read More

notwithstanding some small electrical problems a slight oil leak which I accept as teething problems ,and a handsfree phone saab harness that no one seems to know what to do with(dealer included) in my area now that it is installed!,I am extremely satisfied with my 2001 9-5 linear wagon after 25000kms. Aside that is from an absolutely awful drivers seat that has become impossible to feel comfortable in in 105kms to ... Read More
A couple of other points for your consideration. Dealer Experience: I have owned a 1998 Audi A4, always coveted the A6, but when I finally had the $$$ to afford one, I was disillusioned by the Audi dealership, particularly the service dept and even the repeat-Audi purchase experience. So I shopped around, and had excellent pre and post-sale expriences with Saab, and in addition to the vehicle comparison, the Dealer experience ... Read More
Which Audi are you comparing? If it's the A4, you'll find it's space as lacking as the BMW. These are all nice choices though. Also, as nice as the C-Class is I think that one will be smaller as well and if Front Wheel Drive is important to you the Mercedes will be out of the running. For the money, it's hard to beat the Saab. The resale predictions may be ... Read More
Hi - in the cold light of day etc... You bring out some good points, and some fair criticisms. That is what the original review should have done. It seemed like that Erin had a real chip on her shoulder about the Saab - it was strange to see. If I can pick up on a couple of your comments. Steering wheel telescoping - I can see no practical engineering or ... Read More
We are looking at the 2002 Aero, metallic silver, touring package and automatic. The deal we are being offered in $35,600 to buy, that is with a GM Supplier discount(which anyone working for a GM supplier can get, eg. if your company provides hardware or software to them), the current $3000 incentive, and $500 loyalty since we have a Saab 9-3. Or we can lease it for $467 month, 3 yr. ... Read More
In case anybody cares, the pictures Edmunds shows under their 2002 9-5 section are actually MY 2001. I don't know what's going on because they used to show MY '02, but now just the '01 pics as '02. First the wretched 9-5 review (see the July Road&Track for a nice counterpoint), and now the wrong pictures. Does somebody at Edmunds have a beef with Saab? Stan
I just picked up my new 9-5 linear - (black/ charcoal interior) automatic – premium package. ( June 27, 2002 ) The Audi A4 fell off my list as it is small - and feels cheap. I would never buy a car in 2002 without Telematics on it - and if you want Onstar in an Audi - better be prepared to drop 5K on options !!! Build your own Audi. ... Read More
I, too have been completely disgusted by the biased, distorted, uninformed and unfair review of the 9-5 Aero. More than a "religious" thing, I simply cannot accept that such a GREAT car, recognized as such by ALL recent reviews receives such an obviously flawed and insulting review from a obviously inexperienced driver. GO BUY THE LAST ROAD AND TRACK. "Real reviewers rated the car 4th out of 12". The "Engineering Editor" ... Read More
avement tended to upset the chassis a little." Enough dissection. It is clear that the reviewer has limited experience in driving and accurate reporting, let alone in driving the 2002 Saab Aero. It would be interesting to hear what Saab think, so I've copied this to their customer service departments, and to Saabnet, as I'm sure such a clearly biased, and non-impartial review will provoke lots of discussion as to Edmunds ...
