You can do your research to tell for sure but buying Saabs used is a great way to go - if they check out mechanically. Like you (now I've owned two used Saabs), when I bought my first used Saab I couldn't believe the value I got for the money. I payed $8500 for a 2000, (in 2005), and $6900 for a 1999 the next year, (totalled my first). The ride ... Read More

Close friend has same problem at 50K, 9-5, but the V-6 engine, 1999. She was not a hard driver either, and kept up with service intervals. Dealer got Saab to kick in portion of cost. Which engine do you have?
My 1999 9-5 has been one of the best cars I have ever owned. It has been troublefree, very comfortable, and gets great mileage out on the road. [always 30+ mpg going pretty fast] I had it in the shop for a check and the dealer gave me a 2007 to drive. What a disappointment! It seemed like the car had been seriously decontented. Cheap feeling plastic, flimsy feeling to switches ... Read More
I have a 1999 Saab 95, auto, 4 cylinder. I believe the fuel pump is going out. The car will sometimes stall at a stop light and when I stepped on the gas hard it sound/feels like it's stalling but gets going again!! I already checked the fuse, what else can it be? The car has of 100k on it and it's the original fuel pump.
I'd do it if I were you. My tensioner just broke on my 1999 9-3, and it destroyed and melted the belt into other engine components. It cost me $1,200 to fix. My mechanic told me he saw the exact same thing last week on another 2000 Saab. So it's possible your dealer is silently saying "um, we have a problem with tensioners, and we recommend you replace yours before it ... Read More
Saab still makes great cars. I have had six of them, have four 9-5's right now: 2-1999; 1-2001; 1-2002. They are great cars, I love them. There is only one problem: GM. They are up to their old tricks when it comes to warranty and any customer service. Once a customer buys a Saab or any GM car, they become a legal liability in GM's eyes, and are treated as such. ... Hi: I have read the last few posts and as an many Saab owner would like to post a couple of thoughts. 1) I think the 9-5 platform (1999-present) (not the new ones, have not tried one yet) is one of the best platforms out. Resonable (fairly) in price, power, performance, etc. I have a 1999 9-5 V4 auto and manual and I like them both. Problems that I have seen ... Read More
Most will recommend Aero but I like the softer ride and more comfy (for me) headrests, and lower price of the Arc/SE V-6. I like the 2002-2003 Arc's as they had many features (heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, weather channel, improved crash ratings, 5 speed automatic, great stereo, etc.) that were not available on the 1999-2001 or were "decontented" in the 2004 version when they went to the 4. I feel your pain. I have a 1999 9-5 SE with 74,000 miles. The first year (1999) 9-5 had lots of electrical problems and recalls relating to the ECU and throttle body. However, these were addressed in subsequent years and right now most of the consumer organizations (CR, Kiplinger) rate the 9-5 among the highest of all the European brands for reliability and good repair records. This is one of those eternal debates within the Saab 9-5 community. The fact is that both engines are very reliable. Your friend's mileage figures are 100% arbitrary and seem to have little or no basis in reality. I wonder how your friend became such an expert in Saab engine durability. As far as snow tires on a 9-5, you will need them only if you go with the Aero, which comes with high-performance 'dry pavement' tires. I have been much too busy putting on a very enjoyable 1000 miles on my 1999 9-5 wagon (4cyl/auto, midnight blue, beige leather) to thank all of the thoughtful contributors to the Saab topics. You all made the research for this purchase not only easy but often entertaining. Thank you. For those of you still walking the fence, here are my thoughts on the models I considered. Try Saab of Greenwich, CT just got a great deal on a 1999 wagon.- salesman Robert Batman.
I have test driven the 1999 9-5 wagon and my initial thoughts were that the seats were great! But that's only about 20 miles of driving. Frankly, I thought that they were better than the BMW 528i wagon.
mrj: The financing info is a little less intuitive than it was before the site's overhaul (when all you had to do was click on "Marketplace"), but it's there. Click on "Saab services," then "financing and leasing." For some reason, the financing info is under the "lease" link. (The "purchase" link looks to be a listing of 2000 model prices.) I've not heard about free maintenance. Hope this helps!
lunderwood - I couldn't find the finance info at saabusa.com, but I'll check with my dealers. Do you know if SAAB is also still offering the 3 yr free maintenance? All in all, could be the right month to buy a 9-5 wagon!
One other consideration: Saab's offering 0% three-year financing and 2.9% four-year financing on 1999 models through the end of the month. Details at Saab's web site.
I'm debating buying now or waiting for the Y2K model Wagon with the 2.3 4cyl/traction control. However, local dealers are pushing the 1999s pretty hard w/ invoice pricing. Any thoughts/wisdom on advantages to waiting (i.e. bugs worked out, trac control, etc., any other improvements?) vs. getting the better deal now?
Regarding prices for the 1999 wagon, it seems clear that in most markets the current price is at (or possibly just below) invoice. A friend who is planning on an IDS (European delivery) purchase has been in contact with SAAB's IDS person in Atlanta, and has seen at least the IDS prices for the 2000 model, and they are about 1% higher than the 1999 prices. He did say that the ... Read More

Saab has just released official photos (sorry, lost the web site...I'll post it in a future comment) of the 9-5 wagon (whatever they call it). In a bit of irony, the last Saab wagon, essentially a "squareback" model 96, carried the model designation "95". The first models will be on sale this fall in Europe, with USA introduction in the spring or fall of 1999, probably with a year 2000 designation. ... Read More
