I had posted prior about the same problems with my 2000 Ford Taurus. We also replaced just about everything in hopes of finding and fixing the culprit; nothing helped. Ford is well aware of these failure issues, but will NOT issue a recall. Most of these "undetermined" difficulties are tied to your On-board Diagnostic (OBD) System. Unfortunately, you must take your vehicle to a licensed Ford dealer to utilize their diagnostic ... Read More
^ this is also happening to me. I've been trying to figure out what's wrong for days, I have no time yet to bring it to mechanic. I've changed a lot of my ford taurus parts, every week i've been encountering different problems.
I have a 2000 Mercury Sable station wagon, V6 w/DOHC. It squeals loudly when it's turned sharply to the right or left. Does anyone have any idea what's causing this noise?
I'm having this exact same issue with my 2002 Ford Taurus. Driving down the road it will just turn off then back on. Every light on the dash comes on. Also when it comes back on everything is dim, dash light, headlights, etc. After a few more minutes of driving everything comes back on fully lit. Then sometimes when I turn off the car and get out all of the lights ... Read More
Yeah, thats what sucks about Fords (and may be other American cars) - unlike German engineers they do not design cars for easy maintainance.
Thanks for that information. I'll pass on the preventative maintenance and wait for symptoms and then let the dealer do the job. If it does cost that much, that would be the first substantive criticism I have of the engineering of the car.
You have to remove upper manifold with MAF, air filter and etc. There are some manuals on the net with pictures and tricks how to do that. You have to order gaskets too. I decided to not bother myself with it because it is not couple of hours work esp if you are not trained on the subject. If something goes wrong it will disable your car for several days or ... I noticed you said the plugs "must" be changed at 100,000 miles. I'm at 140,000+ and the car is running fine. When I look under the hood I can't even see where ... Read More
Had the time today to change the fuel filter. Cost about $9 at walmart. The hardest part is getting a safe elevation of the passenger rear of the tire. I wish the new products well. There are plenty of reviews from new or recent owners available on the forums. I wanted to extoll the trouble free history of my 2000 Mercury Sable now ten years and 140,000 miles old. 1) no major unexpected repair charges except a fuel pump at 100,000. 2) one brake job at 90,000 miles 3) no exhaust system issues except new oxygen sensors at 120,000. I have 127K miles on 2002 Mercury Sable and did not have any problems at all. Fuel filter has to be changed every 30K miles. I did not change serpantine belt, brakes though. Changed battery once and tires also once (better change because stock tires suck). Spark plugs must be changed at 100K and it is expensive. Do not forget to replace also wires.
Almost ten years and 138,000+ miles and I must compliment the engineers at Mercury (Ford). No major problems and what is most remarkable is what I have not had to do: 1) no unexpected major repairs except fuel pump replacement in subzero weather with a low tank (I have since learned not to let it go low since the gas cools (or in this case warms) the pump. Probably my bad. ... Read More

I have a 2008 Sable that had the same problem when I test drove it. However, this problem you're referring to has nothing to do with the problem you're describing in earlier models.
