I had posted prior about the same problems with my 2000 Ford Taurus. We also replaced just about everything in hopes of finding and fixing the culprit; nothing helped. Ford is well aware of these failure issues, but will NOT issue a recall. Most of these "undetermined" difficulties are tied to your On-board Diagnostic (OBD) System. Unfortunately, you must take your vehicle to a licensed Ford dealer to utilize their diagnostic ... Read More

Thanks for that information. I'll pass on the preventative maintenance and wait for symptoms and then let the dealer do the job. If it does cost that much, that would be the first substantive criticism I have of the engineering of the car.

More than 1.3 million Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable sedans will be recalled to correct problems with brake lights and air filters. In the first recall, the 2000-2003 Taurus/Sable will be brought back because the center high-mounted stop lamps have bad switches that could lead to inoperative or always-on lights. The second recall covers 2003 Taurus/Sable sedans that have air filters that may catch fire. Both repairs will be done at ... Read More

My 2000 Mercury Sable station wagon with 25000 miles has developed a sort of humming sound whenever I turn the steering wheel right or left. I've had this for several months now, and the sound is louder in cold weather than in hot. The shop initially checked rack and pinion components and greased some parts which quiet the noise but didn't make it go away. Within a few days the humming ... Read More

Initially I took the car to the shop and mechanics checked it only to find nothing wrong with steering components, worn parts, etc. They lubricated the rack and pinion and this quieted the whining sound for a few days. My 2000 gold Sable LX Premium station wagon this month turns 3 years old.  I bought it new at a Brooklyn Lincoln-Mercury dealer.  I traded a Mazda MPV for it which I had purchased new in 1998.  Paid for the S.W. $22.000 minus the trade.  Purchase experience left much to be desired.  I complained with Ford headquarters directly which interceded somewhat with the dealer. My Sable is currently giving me 20 ... Read More
