Just picked up a used 2003 f150. The previous owner mentioned that the cigarrette lighter was not working and it may be due to a blown fuse. Turns out there was no fuse (fuse/relay3) in the fuse box and it's the same circuit with the OBD data collector. It is your limited slip rear end.... drain out the fluid refill with regular rear end fluid not the Ford type, and add to cans of the Ford limited slip additive. Low sulfur diesel fuel in the United States will be mandatory in mid-2006. Europe made low sulfur mandatory in 2003 and half the new cars sold there are diesel. Can't Ford take this as a omen for things to come? I love the new F-150. But I can't get myself to get a truck that gets 14mpg while it could get 28mpg with a diesel.
Just talked to my Ford Service Mgr. He was unable to hear the popping sound my 2003 F150 FX4 was making. After about a 10 second ride along test drive he was able to hear my problem. Styling is subjective... that depends upon the persons taste. But interior materials go beyond that point idealism, onto what is actually an item that is benchmarked for it's quality. I bought my first new pickup truck in 17 years, and the first American made vehicle in 10 years, and I am sad to say I have been disappointed. The F-150 has had horrendous vibration problems that others all talk about but Ford refuses to admit to. The dealer has been very good to date, and is the only reason I hold out hope for a decent resolution.
I finally buckled under and "bought American." My brand new 2003 F-150 Lariat Supercab has an annoying vibration in steering wheel and seat @ 45-65 mph. The dealer has been very good about attempting to fix, in 5 visits they have tried new wheels, tires, road force balancing, etc. They have yet to try non OEM wheels/tires. Did not look at the Titan as I was looking to buy now not at the end of the year. I did look at the Avalanche, Dodge Dakota and the Tundra. It mentioned that Ford has pushed back the introduction of the next generation F-150 pickup from fall 2002 to early summer 2003, making it a 2004 model. It also reported that the powerplants will be carried over. Other than that, not much else is given.
