Beware of your engine and gaskets
Written by: pvnguyen on Sep 16, 2002 9:17:14 PM
I've been a loyal customer of GM. I currently own a 2002 Buick Rendezvous, 2000 Pontiac Montana, 1998 Buick Regal, and 1996 Chevy Lumina. I think everyone should know that GM sucks! I replaced the Lumina's engine last year due to a coolant leak at 65K ($5.5K). Earlier this year, I replaced the gaskets on the Regal due to a coolant leak ($750) and this past week, I replaced the the ... Read More

2001 Chevy Lumina
Written by: masonmi on May 11, 2002 3:06:24 PM
I'm looking at a 2001 Chevy Lumina it has about 30,000 miles on it in very good condition, has anyone had any problems with the years of 2000-2001 Lumina's from fleets or rentals?

This information may be too late for your purchase of the 1998 Lumina you were looking at. I drove a 1998 Lumina LTZ for 3 years and really enjoyed it except for one major problem. The problem is that I'm only 5'1 and had to sit very near the steering wheel in order to reach the pedals. While driving my LTZ for three years (overall, it was a great car!) I ... Read More

Lumina production will stop in April.
Written by: rooba10 on Feb 2, 2001 7:29:56 PM
For all of you to know, Chevy Lumina is built in Oshawa, Canada. It has always been built there since GM started building Lumina's in 1988. Chevy Lumina, Impala, Monte Carlo, and Buick Century and Regal are all built in Oshawa. That plant has one of the best paint shop in GM. I have never seen a Lumina with peeling paint, although I have seen a lot of S-10's, C/K trucks, ... Read More

Hey there NASCAR, had a 1998 Lumina LTZ for a three year lease commencing in Aug of 1997. Over all, it was a great car. Mine had the 3.8 V6 and was loaded and was super reliable. Jump at the chance to get one if it's still available. The leather seat padding was a bit too thin for my liking however. But, that was basically the only problem. Was looking to ... Read More

3400 DOHC V-6 Luminas
Written by: teo on Jan 9, 2001 9:55:02 AM
That engine is a failure because it was essentially a Pushrod powerplant converted 'on the fly' to a cammed engine, hence the problems most Lumina 3.4L DOHC have been putting up during all these years. This engine was never conceived as a cammed designed from the ground up. GM finally discontinued this beast in the late 1990's and the Lumina was given (as it should have been a long time before) ... I like Chevy Lumina
Written by: cigsmh on Dec 12, 2000 3:04:13 AM
I have Lumina 1993 with 188000km on it. I like this car very much. I bought it when it was already 168000km on it. I replaced a battery, oxigen sensor, and breaks. Thats it. My wife has a Toyota Corolla 2000 and I can't drive it after Lumina. I got always back pain after this car. Lumina has fully adjustable driver sitting and it is a plessure to drive this car for ... Chevy did not stop making Lumina in 2000. They do not sale them for the general public anymore, but still produced for fleets. I think, though, GM dropped the car in 2001. Any case, the replacement, the 2000-2001 Impala, is a great car. Even better, tham Lumina, and not much more expensive, especially in the basic version.

Chevy Lumina 97-2000
Written by: glowworm711 on Oct 25, 2000 5:47:30 PM
I have narrowed my search down to either a new Impala or a sightly used Lumina for my next vehicle. Now I am trying to determine reliability of these. I've heard both the 3400 and the 3800 are quite reliable, regardles of which car it lives in. If anyone has a moment to respond with a 97-2k Lumina or 2000 Impala review it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

96 Lumina going strong

I bought a a 96 with a 3.1 V6 brand new, and it served well as our family car until we took delivery on our 2000 Venture. I now use the Lumina for work, and I'm telling you, it's a GREAT car. Since buying it, I have cancelled my subscription to Consumer Reports Magazine, as I have concluded that if Honda put a turd on wheels, Consumer Reports would rave about ... Read More

CANADIAN DIFFERENCES
Written by: tomaso3 on Jun 30, 2000 8:05:39 PM
After reading over 100 letters I feel I have to tell you all about the differences in Canada. Perhaps the differences remain the same for some of the Lumina Models. I understand that most Luminas were made in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. The 1999 model year was the last to be sold in Canada, however for the US market, Oshawa still made the 2000 Lumina base model for fleet cars. I hear ... Read More

Lumina is solid as a rock
Written by: impala0 on Feb 12, 2000 12:35:57 AM
I had a 1995 lumina with 92,000 miles and traded it on a 2000 Chevrolet Impala. This lumina was solid, very dependable, did'nt have any oil leaks, and the motor was so smooth you could'nt feel it running. In fact the only reason I traded was to get another solid Chevrolet thats a step up for my growing family.

2000 Lumina
Written by: milleniaman1 on Nov 4, 1999 3:08:30 AM
Yes it's true, the public can no longer purchase the Lumina. My Dad just got one as his new company car. I don't think ya'll are missing anything. They really didn't make any improvements for 2000. I was kinda disappointed with it being a 2000 model year car and having nothing to make it special. However, it is a nice looking car, much better looking than the Impala. Maybe in a ... Read More

jpstax Thanks for your input. Yesterday I went to my local Chevy Dealer in Miami and I saw a few factory fresh brand new 2000 Luminas. When I asked the salesperson about them, he inmmediately pointed out that those cars CAN NOT BE PURCHASED by the general public, unless you are a fleet operator or acquired for fleet government use. Then he turn my attention to the new Impala. At that ... Read More

From what I've read, the 2000 Lumina is still being made. Check with your local Chevy dealer. However, the 3800 engine is no longer an option, probably because Chevy is offering it in the Impala LS, and so they are in short supply. The only engine you can get with the 2000 Lumina is the 3.4 liter (180 hp) one. Hope this helps.

I had the opportunity of driving the new Impala. I enjoyed the car and I think it offers a lot of car for the money. I think Chevy has introduced a good contender for next year. The main problem I see with the Impala is the bodywork styling which is not suit to please everybody, but then again this car is for those who want to brake away from the Accord/Camry/Taurus ... I'm waiting until next year to consider buying an Impala. Actually I have to wait, because I'm paying off on a '98 Lumina LTZ purchased in '97. I'm hoping that Chevy works out all the bugs in the 2000 Impalas. I've also read where there's a good chance a V8 engine will be offered next year, probably in an SS version. It has been rumored that Chevy is testing an Impala ... Read More

The Chevy dealer I visited to test drive the New Impala..sent me the new Chevy brouchure...I was surprised that the Lumina wasn't even included in the list of what Chevy has to offer..not even a mention of the 2000 model..I guess they don't want to have to reprint the new brouchure again after 1999,minus the Lumina...which I think is a good looking car. Anyone have any thoughts on the wisdom or ... Read More

Chevy had discontinued the Lumina LTZ for the 2000 model year. My advice is to buy an Impala LS, which also has the 3800 Series II engine (like the '99 LTZ did). The 3.1 engine is OK, but the 3800 is so much better. It has been judged one of the 10 best engines on the planet!! You will also be getting a much better suspension package with the Impala LS. ... Why are they discontinuing the Lumina? I read where Chevy execs are convinced the new Impala will be as big a seller as the Lumina. In fact, the 2000 Impala LS has almost the same equipment (3.8 engine and trans) as the LTZ. I guess they don't want duplication of effort with the Impala and Lumina. Besides, their rationale is they can then build more SUVs on the same production line ... Read More

Just my 2 cents worth: Just picked up a '99 LTZ (had to go out-of-state to get as the availability is diminishing). Got it home and initial impression is that this is a fantastic buy!! I got a $ 2000 rebate on it and took it with the 1SD package and CD player option, cloth interior. For the money, you can't do much better-and, you get great crash-worthiness to boot!! Hopefully, ...
