I can see a design problem showing up later. About the lowest milage I've read about was in the 40,000 mile range. There probably just wasn't enough testing to bring out the problem when the motor was developed. But, by 95, 96 models the problem seemed to be very obvious. And this Timesert company had developed the 'kit' to fix the problem, and Cadillac had service documents that specifically called for ... Read More
"...These are $3000 cars at best..." Edmunds valued the one I looked at as a $2700 car so you are dead on. Seller wanted $1500 so the figures just didn't add up. This was several months ago and the car is still on his lawn. I swear that last time I went by, there was a cardboard sign in the window which said: "FREE" Such a shame, the car was a ... Read More
Oldfarmer, I also thought this was out of hand. But googling around, I found a couple of other people with estimates in that area. I think this would be a new Northstar motor, maybe including heads, from Cadillac, and a Caddy dealer doing the labor. From what I've read about $3,000 is what the cost of a Timesert 'fix' for the headbolts. I don't think I would put $3,400 into a ... Read More
$10,000 sounds like baloney to me. I recently looked at a 97 STS 105,000 miles with the Northstar V8 blown head gasket. Mechanics estimate:$2200. Total engine replacement with 72,000 mile used motor: $3400. Someone is taking mom for a ride.
I was in denial, that i have a head gasket issue, but it finally went to where i can,t drive it anymore after 3 months, luckilly i got home before it happened and not between New York and Boston.I lost more than half of what i put into the car-96 Deville.Someone that likes the car gave me a little under $600 for it,i was lucky because i heard it was worthless for it takes ... Well, they don't all have gasket problem. But it's a known problem, and reported often in Cadillac forums. Our 2005 has had several problems. Heat did not work until turned up to 80 or higher. Replaced two or three 'servos' (electric motors that open/close flaps) and the dash display/control head (three times in shop). It worked ok for about a year, it's now doing it again. Front impact sensor failed. A ... Read More
thanks, my '05 Deville has 70K, ext. war. ends at 75k. i have some thinking to do. it has been trouble free for my 2ys of ownership, i'd hate to get rid of it. but don't want to face head gasket issue either.
The head gasket problem is there for all Northstars. In about 2000 or so, Cadillac did some minor redesign, they changed the thread count, and I think increased the length of the head bolts. This supposedly helped the problem. But, this last guy has a 2001, so it is still there. The problem is this is an alumium engine and head. Alumium is soft, compaired to iron, and probably also goes ... Read More
Is the head gasget also a problem on the '05 Deville, ?? what tis the primary cause.
Is the head gasget also a problem on the '05 Deville, ?? what tis the primary cause.
Sounds way too high to me. Even if this is a new long block, it sounds too much, by thousands. This dealer probably doesn't want to do the job. Doesn't want to pull the motor and tranny, pull everything off, and try to get it all back together and working.
Well we are another victim of the famous North Star Head Gasket, 2001 Cadillac Deville in perfect condition until the engine light came on, we need a class action suit now!!!! My Mom bought this car brand "New" & it now has 100,000 miles on it & the engine is now dead..... The dealer/service repair told my Mom it will cost her $10,000.00 for the repair, she left the Dealership in ... Read More
Carboned up, stuck rings from people 'taking care' of it. The Northstar needs to be driven aggressively occasionally to not have and/or cure this problem. Stuck rings will cause massive (a quart every 600 miles) oil consumption. And, just driving it fast (70mph on the freeway) will not cure it, and will not keep it from carboning up. Take the car out on a highway with light traffic. You don't have ... Read More
Recently, about a month or so ago,I responded to about the same query as yours. We own a 2005 Deville. Have also owned 1995 and 1997 Devilles. And I posted quite extensive notes about their problems and my opinions. I don't know which thread I posted in. You may be able to back track on my postings or just look around in the various Cadillac threads. Overall, my basic opinion says ... Read More
In another forum a guy made a long series of posts about him reviving a 2001 Deville that had taken water. And, it was fresh water. You didn't say, but if it was salt water, I think your problem would be magnified a lot. Anyway, this guy took a 2001 Deville. After starting on it, he then bought a wrecked 2000 Deville just for parts to transfer to his 'water' car. ... Read More
I comes from the factory with orange Dexcool. That is what GM recommends. By 2002, I think Cadillac may have stopped recommending the coolant tabs. On older models, there was a sticker on the motor/plastic fan cover/somewhere under there, that gave the part number for the tabs. You only need to add tabs if you dump all the old coolant out. Since you can't get all of it out by opening ... Read More
2000/2001 are bad years for crank sensors, but they usually kill a car dead while it is running.
Well, it could have just been an 'intermittent' error, and the dealer re-set the light, and the error did not happen again. Lucky you. The check engine lights are usually pretty valid. One thing that will set false errors, and usually will set a whole slew of them, is a bad battery, one with low voltage. Caddys do not like low voltage (and most modern autos are the same here), and ... Read More
How accurate are the warning dashboard lights? On my last long distance trip, it said: "service engine soon". A Cadillac dealership told me the computer points to transmission. After hearing the amount of $1250.- plus, just to find the problem, I have decided to drive home, hell or high water. After another 800 mls , I am home now, DeVille sounds perfect and the %#&^*(@ light is off. What is going ... Read More
i have a 2001 cadillac deville. My power windows sometimes just stop working. It wont go up or down. After a a couple of days it starts to work again. It keeps doing this on and off
I bought a 2001 Cadillac Deville in 2003. It was certified pre-owned. I have had problems with the car from day 1. I thought that not only did certified, but also the expensive price and luxury meant that I was purchasing a good car. The more that I hear, the more it seems that Cadillac is a problem car. Now that my warranty is out, I am really spending big bucks ... Read More
The problem is not manifold gaskets, it's head gaskets. And, it's not a Dexcool problem. The Northstar motor has always had this problem, and Cadillac does not seem to want to do any design work to correct it. Fear of head gasket problems is exactly why I do not own a Cadillac. My wife loves them, I am terrified of a $3,000 head gasket repair on a car worth only $10,000 ... Read More
I am sorry you are having problems with your 2001 Deville. Perhaps a different dealer could help you with your problem. I believe most window regulators are made outside of the US now and that may or may not have a bearing on this problem. If you check the forums for other brands you may find that GM isn't the only one with quality/durability issues. I hope you will visit a ... Read More
I have a 2001 Deville. I have had five window regulators to break. I believe this is a defect in workmanship. General Motors has replaced four but refused to do anything else. I have asked them since 2003 to check this part because I believe a defect is in the regulator. The last regulator I purchased and installed myself, I found that there is a plastic part that is causing the ... Read More

My 1995 Cadillac Deville with 4.9 liter engine hesitates when I accelerate. How frequent? It seems that depends on what the outside temperature is. I bought this car in 2000, and have had this problem since 2001. My mechanic feels it's a computer problem. He says my car has 3 "computers". He's not sure which one to replace, so he would replace one at a time until problem is remedied. He ... Read More
I appreciate your comments. It is really tough to get rid of my SLE with less than 100 miles on it but my wife likes it and since she is a realtor and spends $50 everytime she fills up her Avalanche she plans on driving it. I bought a 2006 Camry Solara SLE Convertible the other day and am not at all impressed with the ride. The car bounces quite a bit over city streets and yet the car writers praised the "smooth ride". I recently had an idea to upgrade my current Bose radio/CD/cassette in my 2001 DHS to the Navigation System and saw a Cadillac Navigation (DVD) unit from a 2002 Deville advertised on eBay with the note that the seller also wanted to do the same thing but was reselling the unit when he was told by several "sources" the unit was incompatible with the 2001 Deville. Has anyone out there tried ... Read More
Try and get one under 4 years old and 50k mileage so you will get a break on an extended warranty. I wouldn't dream of having any car without a 100,000 miles 0 deductible 6 year warranty especially a Cadillac. When the warranty is gone so is the car. The 2001 model had leather standard and the 2002 had the most standard equipment including an electrochromatic (self dimming) outside side mirror ... Read More
A few years ago there seemed to be a lot of postings on this list so what has changed? I rode around the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex in a buddy's 2003 CTS - Cadillac's "best seller". I currently own a 1998 Deville with 35,000 miles. I generally trade cars when they get up around 50,000 miles. Am considering a Jaguar Sedan for my next car. How would you compare the two brands so far as Maintenance costs, ride, quality and general satisfaction is ... Read More
I have had a recurring problem with my 2001 Deville. It usually occurs in the morning. Applying brake pressure while backing-up creates a a loud noise almost like a fog horn. The service manager said he noticed that some of the Armoral that I used on the tires had gotten ... Read More
The Demographics have gone down tremendosly since Caddy introduced the new Deville. When I purchased my 2001 Deville, I was told by the dealer, Alco Cadillac, that I was the youngest person to ever purchase a Deville from them (age 19). The alternator has been making strange sounds in my 1998 Cadillac Deville. Dealer says a bearing is worn out and the alternator needs to be replaced. Is the alternator a common problem in the Cadillacs of the late nineties? Has anyone else had similar experiences? I have only owned the car since June 2001, it had 10800 miles at purchase. The car went into service in December 1997. It seems a ... Read More
About the Devilles...my 2001 Deville is one of the best vehicles I've ever driven. I've had it since May with no problems at all. Long-term....the Newest Northstar engines are made to last. Other Cadillac owners have said this is best Deville yet. Good luck.
Hello folks, I've been a reader of Town Hall for several years but have never posted. Based on several past disastrous experiences with GM/Chrysler products, I thought I'd never buy another car built in the U.S. again until I read most of the posts in this Cadillac Deville forum. These insightful comments convinced me to give GM products another chance. Last week, I purchased a base 2001 silver Deville with about ... Read More
My local Cadillac dealer offered me a deal on a 2001 base DeVille with 9,000 miles on it for $34K. My trade is a 1994 DeVille valued at $5,500 + $3,600K down payment. PA state sales tax is 6%. This works out to $416/mo for 5 years. What do you think?
Sorry to hear of your Cadillac problems. My 2001 has given me no problems. It rides and performs exactly how it should for a Cadillac. I hear the 2002 Devilles are even more refined. Don't give up on Cadillac yet. I think the best is yet to come.
Lots of miles for a program car..Ask the Cadillac dealer to run a history on the car and let you read the printout.. it will give all warranty repair data and dates/mileage.. 25k miles is not a program car..Sounds like a rental deal.. $32k is too much for a plain Deville.. My son bought a 01 SLS in March, 7500 miles w/STS wheels, diamond white and sunroof for 36k including 6% ... Read More
Are Cadillac Program Cars with warrantee good deals from dealers? A 2001 devilled program car with 25k will sell for around 32,000 in central Texas. How many years and miles ( 15,000/yr) should one of these cars last if properly maintained?
This message is in reply to message # 479 placed by user 456ttt. I received two nasty replies from Cadillac, one from Peter Koenig and the other from Stephen Johnson. They both are with the the GM Internet Response Center. Basically they said just because the design was changed in 2001 in no way means that the 2000 visors are defective. I plan on pursuing this issue, but I suspect that ... Read More
Well guys, I finally picked up my brand spanking new 2001 Cadillac Devilled DTS with all of 10 miles on it. All options, except Adaptive Seats, were ordered on this black on black baby. My wife and I are both 31 and recently rented a Cadillac DeVille. We expected to be impressed, but were truly overwhelmed. We had been in the market to buy a high-quality, luxury sedan and, beyond any doubt, Cadillac's DeVille DHS completely outperformed the competition in every category in our opinion. Last Thursday (August 31), we purchased a 2000 cashmere DHS and were very happy with the purchase process (paid $44,073) ... Read More
Did anyone on here saw the issue of top luxury sedans in the Motor Trend magazine? I thought it was a great road comparison but somewhat disappointed. They criticize about the DTS tires of being cheap and said that the ... Read More
