2024 Volvo XC40 B5 Core Bright Review

2024 Volvo XC40 B5 Core Bright 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)

I recently purchased a new 2024 Volvo XC40 B5 Core Bright and I have so many regrets. My family has owned three different Volvo models and loved them all. Here are some things you need to know, that I wish someone had told me before purchasing this vehicle. First, the good. It is really attractive, I believe the most attractive in its class. It is peppy, when it is on. (We will get to this later.) This is where the good ends. First, if you use Android Auto or listen to music with the Pandora app, this car is not for you. I had no idea that I would not be able to use Android Auto and I cannot explain how much I miss it. Volvo allows you to use google maps and the play store but you are only allowed to use certain apps from the play store and Pandora is not allowed. You cannot use google maps and the phone at the same time without losing access to voice prompts from google maps. There is no way to override this that I have found. After some time, I figured out how to stream my phone through bluetooth so that I can listen to Pandora. It is not easy. First you have to plug your phone in to keep your battery from dying, then you need to start Pandora, then go to the Volvo menu and choose bluetooth, then you need to press play on the phone and on the Volvo, sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. Sometimes I have to restart everything to make it work. If you want to change your channel, you can only do that with your cell phone. Not the safest thing in the world to do while driving. Once you get out of your car, you must stop Pandora on your cell phone or it will drain your battery because it keeps running in the background. On my way home after picking up my car, I placed my new phone on the charging pad in the car, that was a big mistake. When I got home, I picked up the phone and it was so hot that I had to let it cool off before I could handle it. I am really lucky that the insides did not melt. When I told the dealership, their response was to turn off the charging pad, so do not expect to be able to use the charging pad. On the second day I owned this vehicle, I was driving through a grocery store parking lot on a very sunny day and the entire display went into night mode, which made it nearly impossible to see anything because it was so bright outside. The next time I drove the car it was back to normal and has not happened again, so far. Next, there is a lot of road noise, much more than I expected. Occasionally the car will pull hard to the left for no reason and does not handle speed bumps or rough roads well at all. And now the thing that is nearly unbearable, not being able to stop the car from turning off every time you come to a stop. I have never been so constantly jolted in a vehicle in my life. My daughter drives the new Toyota Prius and it does this too but it is flawless, you literally cannot tell unless you are concentrating that the car turns itself on and off. I also drove a CRV Hybrid that did this flawlessly. This Volvo does not do this well at all. If you are a person who likes to pull out quickly, this is not the car for you. If you do not wait and let the car restart before you push the gas pedal, you are in trouble. I lost power going through a light on the second day I had the car. When it turns off, you get a bigger jolt than when it turns back on. There is no way that you will ever miss this car turning on and off, it is horrible. If you are in a traffic jam, you will need some dramamine or all the jolting around will leave you very nauseous. If Volvo contacted me today and said we will take back the car, I would jump on the offer. As pretty as it is, that cannot make up for its many shortfalls.

Cute from far but far from cute!

There are three trim models and two engine options. I purchased the R-Design trim with the T4 engine because I did not know much about Volvo. The exterior has a classy look but the interior is boxy and not very tech forward. They say the XC40 is competing with the BMW X1, Audi Q3, and Benz GLA250, but it’s really shouldn’t be compared to those luxury brands. The Volvo XC40 is more in comparison with Mazda and Subaru than anything else. A luxury brand they say? Far from it! Just because the car is unique to Sweden and they brand it as luxury it does not mean that it will live up to its name. The drive feels flimsy, the speed is not adequate, and the interior is mediocre. They put the T4 engine on an SUV, which is absolutely sad. It takes 8 seconds to go from 0-60. Any engine with less than 220 horsepower does not belong inside an SUV. The biggest mistake I made was leasing this Volvo XC40 T4 R-Design. My Mazda CX5 Grand Touring was better equipped, sportier, and more fun to drive. I recommend going for something like the BMW X1 or Mazda CX-5 if you want luxury and a good drive.

Some Great Some Terrible

So driving wise car is fine…comfortable and such. I have had four new cars in the last 5 years and I cannot believe that Volvo put into the market such a technology retard. Nothing is intuitive at all with system. Just finding anything is a cluster ———. The salesman on delivery told me most owners use their iPhone for navigation and after one attempt I see why…but that not the worst of interface. Frankly so bad and frustrating I am going to get rid of that particular car this year. Wish not so. Oh I keep getting faulty car warnings as well.

I’m pleased with most aspects of the XC40 except it’s noisy compared to my 2008 XC70. At speeds between 30 - 60 it has a wind throb sound as if a window was open. It bothers my hearing.
