Great design, great execution

Excellent: reliability, serviceability, visibility, 5-seat comfort (incl the best headrests), trunk space (esp with flat-folded seats), steering, handling (I upgraded to IPD sway bars, poly bushings, chassis braces, Bilstein shocks, 16" wheels), 51/49 f/r distribution and light weight makes the car very predictable. Mileage is fine if you accelerate softly and keep speeds below 65. 4 spd trans isn't efficient above 70, but the car is fine well above that. Controls are intuitive. Sunroof is huge. Paint is robust. Towing is strong. The car's design and capabilities have not been improved on... it's unique and excellent even 15 years and 180,000 miles on the road.

Excellent car

This is my first Volvo and I absolutely love it. I have heard only good things about them and now I get to experience them. I (third owner) bought it for $1,000 with 217,000 miles on it. The only thing thing that has been done to the engine was a head gasket replacement. Since I have bought it I have had to put new brakes and rotors all around, 1 rear wheel bearing and a fuel pump. I also had to completly redo the A/C system. I have put about $3500 into the car including the purchase price and I strongly feel the car will go another 2 to 300,000 miles. I love this car and I will continue to buy Volvos until I can't drive any more.

Best Bang for the Buck

Although kind of hard to find used, since no one who owns one seems to let them go, I found a 1994 940 with 147K on it for a fair price and put $1000 into it to get the full 30 and 50K service done on it. I fully expect to have no problems with the car for 3-4 years now, beyond typical maintenance, as these cars are solid, safe, comfortable and reliable. Repair labor and parts seem about the same as my Honda and used parts abound, at least in Portland, OR, probably the Volvo (and Subaru) capitol of the US. My minor quibbles: the air conditioning is not the best, even though I have a newer compressor and the sound system/speakers are not that great, even after I installed a new CD player.

Very reliable, my third Volvo, Rear wheel drive is a nice plus. My only gripes are tail lights going out and engine oil leaks.
