Used 2002 Volkswagen Jetta Consumer Reviews
Great car, burns some oil
The Jetta 2002 Wagon is my first new car that I bought. I really like it (handling, gas consumption, design). The only problem that I ran into is its consumption of oil on my 2.0l engine. The dealership tells me it is okay to burn up to a quart every 1000miles. My car burns about half of that. This sounds more like these old two stroke East German engines. No new car should burn oil (after the first 1000miles), this is ridiculous! As a native German, I can't believe that VW is telling this to its customers here. After completing my offical oil consumption test, I will get the "1qt/1000miles" statement in writing and call Wolfsburg!
Biggest Pile I Have Ever Owned
I was really excited when I bought the car. Been all downhill since. There cannot be a car that is more cheaply made than this. Mechanical issues (hoses, coils, traction control, etc.), interior is literally peeling, seats fall apart, antenna is cracking and falling off, engine cover under the car fell off, front bumper has come off twice. Lost lug caps, front grill caps. I could go on and on. Worst car I have ever owned. Will never buy a VW again.

ouch!
I loved my new Jetta until I dove it for an hour. The seat is very uncomfortable! Am I the only one who finds this to be so? I sure hope it breaks in. Otherwise, I love the car.
Run away as fast as you can
I completely concur with Paulie and Adam. I've had the same problems both of them have described with varying degrees of success in remediation. * Spastic shifting * Spastic starting in cool weather * Alarm system malfunctions * Radio went dead * Door seals ruined after winter weather * Squeaky steering wheel * Squeaky front seats * Squeaky body panels in cargo area.
My first and only VW
Twice in the shop (two months apart) for ignition coils to be replaced under warranty (once with a Ford Focus rental...yuck!) Most recently the driver side window slid into the door not to re-emerge. Also under warranty but I have to wait 10 days for the dealership to have the time. First the window was duct taped up, now propped by wooden shims. I should have two bumper stickers. "Bought new...as is!" and "What next!" Never will I buy a VW again!
