This is the full size SUV you’re looking for.

Largest interior short of a Tahoe. The Kia and Hyundai counterparts interior aren’t as spacious or as easy to access. Infotainment system with the wireless CarPlay is flawless. V6 is plenty if you’re not planning on street racing. Wish it got better gas mileage in current gas prices (~20).

Before buying my Atlas, I read every review and watched every YouTube video I could find almost to the point of obsession. I had a Ford expedition max previously with far too many problems with the EcoBoost engine. The common theme for the Atlas was that the engine was too sluggish. In my opinion, the engine is perfectly adequate (have V6) and will perform everything you need it too. The big test came when I needed to pass two semi-trucks at once. The car had no problem getting up to speed and at 104mph felt really solid, but yes it is slow compared to a Dodge Durango Hellcat. The Atlas is at home on the long road trips and after 7 hours of straight driving I had no aches or pains. The steering is precise and the ride is very smooth. I am on the bigger side and have plenty of room all the way around. I never feel cramped. In my opinion the vehicle looks far more expense than the price and I love how the interior is uncluttered and streamlined. I am not a big fan of the 12 inch tablet sticking out over the dashboard. The fit and finish have met all expectations, and I have yet to experience any creaks or other interior noises. Our neighbor who bought a 2021 Hyundai Palisade said the Atlas handles better and feels more confident in corners with less body roll. With my wife and three daughters in the Atlas we have plenty of room and my 12 year old prefers the third row to herself. The charging ports in the third row are a must. I found all the technology fairly easy to figure out and love the wireless Apple CarPlay. Knock on wood, I have had no problems yet with over 2000 miles. The two things I think need improvement are sometimes at lower speeds the transmission shift patterns are a little goofy, almost like the trans is confused for a second. Not the end of the world, but happens once is awhile. The other bothersome thing is the fake dual exhaust tips. To me it is just strange, either have dual exhaust or eliminate the fake chrome tips. Overall, I really like this vehicle and recommend adding it to your list of considerations. I know Kia and Hyundai get all the raving reviews, but for me it is the VW.

So many weird issues

My 2022 Atlas is my second one after having a mostly good experience with my first one. However, this time I have had so many issues that driving it has become frustrating to downright frightening. My infotainment system would not reliably work (it would turn off and on, would sometimes take several minutes to turn on after turning the car on, or would sometimes not turn on at all) which also rendered the backup camera unusable when that happened. Then it had an issue with the anti-slip regulator turning on while I was driving slowly on local roads, which meant that I was pushing the gas pedal without any response from the car while in traffic. The dealer finally realized these two issues were connected and there was a loose electrical connection that was fixed. More recently I had an issue where the car turned off in the middle of the road while I was waiting to make a left hand turn and gave me a message to manually restart my engine. Now I feel like I am constantly waiting for the next issue to happen and hoping that it doesn't lead to an accident on the road. I've never felt less safe or comfortable in a new car than I do in this one.

2022 3.6 4 motion R Line so far so good BUT

I have driven the Car for only 800 miles and I already have an appointment for a light on the dash , faulty maneuver braking function that needs attention, honestly not a good thing to happen in a new car. Second I am missing my folding mirrors, third issue is gas consumption, which I kind of knew since I bought it. I found out that setting it up on Eco Mode saves a bit more. Other than that it's a great FULL SIZE SUV priced rightly compared with other brands

At first, looks are deceiving but once I left my big Ford Expedition and settled into the Atlas, it was a game changer! This smaller engine upheld the power it promises and the space was good. I down sized because my kids grew up and have their own cars now. I recommend this car to those moms who are looking to down size in style! I will upgrade soon to the bells and whistles trim!

Great Vehicle Still Going Strong after Three Years

2022 Volkswagen Atlas SEL Premium R-Line 4dr SUV AWD (3.6L 6cyl 8A)
5 of 5 people found this review helpful

After three years driving our 2022 Atlas R-Line, we have no major complaints, and love it. I am constantly amazed at some of the online experts who trash the Atlas (specifically the Cross Sport) and VW in general -- as unreliable and expensive and other things. We had wanted to get another Toyota Highlander back in 2021, but their new models' awful styling turned us off, and the lack of passenger side comforts. Our R-Line has both heated and cooled seats for both front seats and second row! Something that usually you can only find in luxury SUVs. Also adjustable. We love the Room of our Atlas -- it hits the "Goldilocks" just right button for not too small, and not too big. It's just right... and is just right height off the ground. It's also stylish and I think it will still look good 10 years from now as opposed to some of the other competitors which use awful anime and cartoonish styling. The only complaint I have is of course, gas mileage, on our V-6. But it's tolerable, and I find that it has plenty of oomph when we need to accelerate or pass someone. It's loated with teach -- overhead camera to help park is a must! Collision avoidance.... We love this vehicle. We'll see how it holds up over the next three years, but for now, it's been fantastic.

I love this suv. There is more room than I know what to do with. Regularly fit 2 six plus footers in the third row and still have plenty of room for 5 more adults. The tech features are great, even without the technology package. I have not had any problems except having to take it in for the door harness recall. 2 years old and 20k miles. Extremely Happy.

Safety Features & Technology are Excellent

I recieved my 2023 VW Atlas R-Line as a Christmas gift from my mother. I didn't like the Atlas at first since I had my heart set on a Cadillac Escalade. The safety & driver assistance features so far are outstanding, the anti collision and back-up assistance has already saved countless lives. The vehicle stopped when I was backing up saving a young boy who ran behind my Atlas in a shopping mall parking lot. The forward-collision warning had engaged within enough time to prevent me from rear-ending a Honda Civic. I had owned a 2004 VW Passat 4-Motion which was great, but it definitely doesn't compare to the Atlas. This is my first VW SUV and I absolutely love driving it. I feel completely safe in this vehicle. I'm a tall guy since my height is 6'5 the interior has plenty of space even with all my friends, this has become the road trip top pick when we decide to travel out of town.

Volkswagen Nightmare: A Cautionary Memo

Tyese Kimble , 06/26/2024

My experience with Volkswagen has been incredibly disappointing. I purchased a brand-new vehicle in March 2023, only to encounter repeated malfunctions that kept it in the shop for over 50 days. Despite my attempts to resolve the issues, Volkswagen refused to buy it back, forcing me to trade it in at another dealership. Now, my 2024 model, an Atlas purchased from a different dealership, has been in service from January to June 2024, with its most recent stint starting on May 16th. This continuous cycle of repairs is far from what I expected when purchasing a new vehicle. I've accumulated over 15 service receipts for a car that was only six months old. Based on my own frustrating experience and the similar issues faced by others, I strongly caution against purchasing any Volkswagen vehicle. It has been nothing short of a nightmare.

We bought our 2022 Atlas R Line brand new and it has been an absolute nightmare. The brakes have been a constant issue, screechy and sometimes sounding like there’s an alien living under the hood of my car! This is even after being replaced, which happened after 6 visits and having to fight with them to replace it. The radio just stopped working altogether after only 6 months and had to be completely replaced. Then the head gasket had to be replaced. All under 50,000 miles! Customer service has been an absolute nightmare. One service manager even blamed the bad brakes on my driving skills and the climate. When we went to the dealership to speak to him so he could hear the brakes he called the police! He also told us to just go buy a Lexus. We asked to speak to the GM who was able to handle it. Just stay far far away! I couldn’t regret this purchase more. And I’ve lost so much money as it does not retain its value. Buyer beware.

This is the second Atlas I’ve owned. The first was a 2019 totaled in an accident (not my fault) and I loved it so much I got another! I’m now in a 2023 Atlas Sel premium R line and I love it as much as the first. I shopped hard, looking at the Mercedes, a BMW, and an Audi. I’m happy with the technology available at this price point on the VW.

Driver's Door Real Bad Wind Noise, had it in, they say it is a faulty door seal, 2 trips to dealer and the noise is better, but still noisy. Infotainment center goes dead, then 2 days later, the Digital Cockpit stopped working, UI have had it for 4 months, 5K kms on it. VW said bring it in and there is a charge, a charge for what, you incompetence. Stay away from VW, buy Toyota or Domestic.

Got a Pyrite Silver one. Outstanding in looks, comfort, and features. Bought this for wife's retirement. Its a luxurious SUV; beautiful at all angles. Very quiet. Exterior lighting is impressive; including courtesy lighting on door and hatch. We have less than 1000 miles at this point; this car far exceeds our demands. We considered Cadillac, Honda, and Kia - which have great options in the 3 row, v6, suv category - the roominess and aesthetics won us.

Safety issues with brakes and navigation

SS, 08/23/2024
2022 Volkswagen Atlas SE w/Technology 4dr SUV (3.6L 6cyl 8A)
2 of 4 people found this review helpful

This is the worst car I have ever owned and I've owned some rough cars. I finally bought a new car that is riddled with issues VW doesn't fix or care to fix. The dealership I worked with is terrible and they don't care. The brakes started to grind within a few thousand miles and apple car play navigation has never worked. They keeps saying brakes are fine even though the grinding continues to get louder. The navigation always thinks I am miles away from where I actually am. I can't disconnect and use my phone and am constantly lost and fighting it. These issues are severe safety issues. I PAID for navigation that I can't use and brakes that sound like I am driving a $2,000 garbage car not a $40,000 car. Super disappointed in VW and will NEVER buy another VW and no one in our family will every own one and we have several kids driving or about ready to drive.

We bought the perfect vehicle—or so we thought. After my son Thomas’s accident, we were faced with the overwhelming challenge of not just his recovery, but the simple act of getting him home from the hospital safely. My Escalade was too tall to get him in and out of easily, and we needed something practical, accessible, and reliable to support his healing journey. After tons of research, we landed on a 2022 Volkswagen Atlas R-Line. It checked every box—low to the ground, roomy enough for his wheelchair, all-wheel drive for Colorado weather, great safety features. We felt confident. We felt hopeful. That hope didn’t last. Within days, the sensors were giving false alerts. The infotainment system would go blank. GPS and radio cut out. The dealership blamed it on charger cords. Then said they couldn’t replicate the problem. Meanwhile, Thomas had three outpatient therapies a week, and I was left without a dependable vehicle. We tried another dealership. They identified wiring issues with the 5F module—the component that runs most of the vehicle’s electrical systems. After weeks in the shop and back-and-forth with VW America, they offered us $6,000 (on a $55,000 car) for our troubles. Then the starter failed—while I was sitting at a red light. The 5F module again. More issues followed: the N80 valve failed twice. The battery died. The infotainment system froze—while I was driving in Houston for medical appointments. Then this month, the power steering and 5f module have failed completely. The car is now undrivable. The needed part is on nationwide backorder, and we have a road trip in May and more medical trips to Houston in June/July. We accepted an $8,000 settlement in February 2024 thinking it would help. Turns out that disqualified us from any more support—even though the vehicle continues to fail from the same root cause. VW is now refusing to help. We are left without answers, without support, and without the vehicle or even a loaner vehicle. I’m sharing our story because this isn’t just about a car. It’s about being left behind by a company that should stand behind its product. This has been stressful, expensive, and at times terrifying. We bought this vehicle to bring comfort and stability into a life that had already been turned upside down. Instead, it’s brought breakdowns—both mechanical and emotional. I have only ever owned Volkswagen cars. This is my first time owning an atlas. By far the greatest investment I have made. It drive good, the space is outrageous. I love it. People say they aren’t good on gas, and mine is excellent. So far no problems like everyone else has. Maybe they just aren’t maintaining it right.

The vehicle doesn't have all the creature favorites for the price. Dealers lied about the vehicle, you cannot return the vehicle even it is the next day. Navigation system is only available in certain levels of the same models. But there is a button for Navigation.

2023 Volkswagen Atlas has issues with exhaust freezing up from letting the car idle.( supposedly) my car has 39000km on it and they said spark plugs needed to be replaced because I flooded my vehicle by trying to start it twice in the cold. It also caused fuel to end up in the oil. ( oil change was just done the week before this all happened) they did not cover spark plugs on warranty they said it was my fault.

No road noise. Sturdy yet nimble. Love it thus far.
