2024 Volkswagen Jetta
Update--Almost 2 yrs later and we no longer have the Jetta. Over 103 days the dealer had the Jetta. 8 months in, experienced what I thought was a clutch issue. After the dealer went through various tests and back and forth with corporate, we were told the VW needed a new engine and they would be replacing the turbo for good measure. Mind you, the Jetta was babied during break in along … with break in oil change that I did with VW oil and oil filter. About 4 mths into ownership, had a code that indicated faulty tank emission vapor switch. The dealer cleared the code said I could drive normally and sent us on our way. Never did get the replacement part or ETA. The engine was on backorder for 100 plus days with no ETA available. After working through the dealer along with a Mazda dealership we previously purchased from, ended up in a new Mazda 3 Premium 6spd. Took a hit on equity but the piece of mind is practically irreplaceable. Our Mazda 3 is notably head and shoulders above the Jetta and the driving experience is better in many ways (less the grunt from the VW turbo). The price is reflective but we got a deal at basically 10% under MSRP for the Mazda. Having lived through the VW experience I would never recommend getting a Jetta, not to mention the ongoing horror stories regarding the 1.5t and 2.0t VW engines in their CUVs. No doubt there are VW purist and loyal owners, just would never take the risk again on VW / turbos.
Like many we've owned most brands, Honda, Toyota, and Mazda and lived with VW growing up. Our new 2024 Jetta Sport w/6sp manual is a good blend of comfort and fun. Our trim has all the necessary features like connected Android Auto and Carplay, along with a host of safety nannies features like blind spot monitor and adaptive cruise control. The 1.5t engine has plenty of pep and the 6sp really makes for a fun experience. The shifter is precise enough and the clutch is light with a grab point is easy to feel. Full LED light clusters on front and rear are nice touches. The interior materials are not going to compete with the soft materials of other popular brands. But having had both Toyota and Mazda, we don't miss the difference. Spots where you mostly contact like the steering wheel and arm rests have leatherette or cushion. The other areas are more for bragging rights when you boil it down. The rear seats have plenty of leg room and while all have cloth, they are comfortable and soft with no weird spots that are uncomfortable. Having a sedan reminds us of how practical they can be and easily fit the stuff we haul on the daily, like grocery or a Costco run. We have a CUV if we really need to haul something larger which is really seldom. I do most of the maintenance on our cars so I'm not too concerned about longevity. We're expecting 8-10 yrs from our Jetta like our other vehicles so resale isn't that much of a concern either. We managed a decent OTD price and with other cars with a manual gearbox either not available or with MSRP+mkt adjustment, we are really satisfied with our purchase. Every mfr has dealt with reliability concerns in recent years so we're approaching our ownership with slightly guarded optimism. Initially we couldn't be more satisfied and the mpg average borders on hybrid territory without paying the premium up front. A bit of nostalgia based but I intend to thoroughly enjoy this sensible commuter w/6sp manual gearbox and it has a manual keyed ignition. Buyers that want the latest tech aren't going to be satisfied with a model like this but to each their own...
