Great road car
Rob,01/03/2019
I'm a traveling salesman. My company car is a Chevy SS which I've already driven 86k+ miles. Wife bought Charger which we've now driven on several personal trips. A bit to my surprise, I enjoy the Charger more than the SS. Both cars have similar comfort. Sticker on the SS new was about $10k higher than the Charger. The company got a special fleet price on a closeout model which actually made the SS cheaper than the Charger. On that basis, I'd say the SS was a better value, but since they don't make the SS anymore and I'm not going to get fleet pricing for a personal car, I consider the Charger a good buy. A lot of performance for the dollar. Yeah, the SS has a bit more refinement and some extra features included in the higher sticker price. What I don't see in the higher SS price is any extra performance. Professional auto testers seem to prefer the SS. My "seat of the pants" impression is different. It feels to me like the Charger accelerates harder and inspires more confidence in corners. Both cars are firm and braking from both cars' Brembos seems equally good. The SS has an edge on smooth, but neither car is unpleasant. SS seats look more stylish, but the Charger seats seem more comfortable to me for long stints behind the wheel. A wider person might prefer the SS seats though. The SS gets a consistent 21-22 mpg in highway driving. On the highway trips we've taken in the Charger, we got 24-25 mpg. Of course, around town wife averages 15-16 mpg with the Charger. Because the SS is my work car, I never drive it around town enough to get a comparison. The higher sticker on the SS does bring a few features the Charger lacks. The SS features I value are the heads up display and a spare tire. I got an aftermarket spare for the Charger, but have to forgo the heads up display. That brings up a minor annoyance with the Charger. For whatever reason, Dodge located the very small high beam indicator light where it is frequently hidden by the tach needle. Such a small thing, but so annoying. The other annoyance with the Charger is the automatic door locks. A nice day just invites windows down driving - if for no other reason than to listen to that wonderful engine. If you like to rest your arm on the window sill, those front door locks pinch when they activate. The SS has the same automatic door locks, but they are positioned just enough different that they won't pinch you when they activate. Minor beefs aside, I enjoy driving the Charger more - and driving enjoyment is why cars like the SS and Charger exist. For people who consider driving a necessary evil, there are plenty of other fine transportation appliances available for less money and operating costs. Me? I'm already scheming how to get a Charger when its time for the company to trade my SS. UPDATE 18 months down the road. . . .not a single problem or issue. Still my favorite driver car. This car has the optional LED headlights. One thing I'll add is that these headlights are really good. I never noticed how bad the headlights were on our previous car until we got this one. Other than that, I wouldn't change a think in the original review. When my wife bought this car, I did wonder whether the long term reliability of a Chrysler product could be trusted. On this car, so far, the answer has been a resounding YES. UPDATE #2 AT 24 months, the car is still solid and tight. Not a single malfunction or need for an unscheduled service. American cars should be built this well. I do wish now we had ordered the tinted windows since we ordered a dark color and the interior is black. If you park in the sun a lot, something you might want to consider. On the plus side, the color called maximum steel manages to be dark but not show dirt like a black car. Not sure how they pulled that off, but the car never really looks dirty even when it is. Driving enjoyment hasn't faded one iota. We've put on some highway miles in the past months and the highway fuel mileage is amazingly good for such a powerful car. In the normal around town driving, the car is a bit of a pig with gas. Still willing to buy another, but no need to as this has been such a good car thus far.
