Below average Seat / Ride Comfort / Noise
Visually, the seats look sufficiently padded, but in actual use they feel hard after 10 miles of driving and I get sore after 30 minutes. The ride is busy and bouncy - even with the Firestone Destination LE2 tires aired down to 32 PSI and induces fatigue after only about 30 miles of driving. Although the 4 cyl engine itself is fairly quiet, the exhaust is rather loud and prominent in most driving situations. Thus overall, this rear wheen drive 4 cylinder Tacoma is quite truckish and not carlike and not well suited, from a driver fatigue standpoint, for long stretches of highway driving. This is too bad because mechanically, the Tacoma is built to deliver 500,000 - 1,000,000 miles of troublefree highway driving. These comments are based on renting a brand new Tacoma (only 5 miles on the odometer) for 2 days.
Decent choice
Had this about 6 months now with just over 3k miles on it. It's a bit underpowered as I went with the 4cyl but I suspect the transmission might be partly at fault too. Mainly used as a daily driver so power isn't a huge issue here. Takes a great deal of effort to accelerate and has a hard downshift under 31mph. Does NOT like hilly areas and will suck up quite a bit of gas when going up steeper roads. Once you reach a good speed though, that instant gas usage meter comes in super handy. Lets you know exactly how much you can take your foot off the gas to reduce consumption while maintaining speed. (I wouldn't recommend using cruise control as it will use more gas to stay at a constant speed) Can be tricky but doable with practice. Not the most efficient in stop and go traffic but I live in a semi rural area with plenty of edge-of-town routes/stores to avoid most traffic lights. Most of the time I am able to average 22-25mpg on a trip. High score 31.1mpg. Getting 18mpg in the winter but I've been lazy and haven't put snow tires on yet which is the cause for the 20%-ish drop in mpg. Not much for towing but it's enough to pull a little trailer or help someone who is stuck. Brakes have a shudder if pressed too hard- fortunately I have a habit of letting off the gas early so I rarely have to apply much pressure to the brakes in order to stop, which solves that little issue. Lots of aluminum/plastic on this truck so be careful finding a ground when adding any new electronic equipment. Also found it's not possible to disable ABS directly as the fuse is integrated with other components, and messing with the wiring would void parts of the warranty. I have found ABS systems to be more harmful than helpful for those of us who actually know how to use the brakes effectively in hazardous situations. I've had to adjust the way I drive somewhat to compensate and keep the ABS from activating. A bit annoying but manageable. The engine compartment is designed to make it very easy to preform most maintenance work yourself. No tranny dipstick sadly. I noticed, less than a month after buying it brand new, surface rust had appeared on the cv shafts. Will be keeping an eye on this and applying an additional undercoating in the spring. Comfort is subjective. I prefer a stiffer seat so this is great for me. Handling seems just fine. Steering is very responsive with no play. Ride isn't super smooth but it's not rough at all. Exactly what I expect for a truck. If you want extreme comfort go get a luxury car. Not sure why people complain about cabin noise. I haven't noticed anything unusual, excessive, or distracting. If it's really a problem, there's insulation kits you can buy and install yourself to reduce that tiny bit of noise. Decent amount of interior space for a smaller truck. If you need more space, ya should've got a bigger truck. But there's enough room for me to store emergency supplies, tools, and have room for groceries. Added a hard tonneau to increase lockable storage area. Not concerned with interior looks(I know some people hate all the plastic and the shape of the dash) It's functional and that's all I care about. Though the cupholder placement is a bit awkward it's not really an issue. And sadly I haven't been able to figure out how to switch the windows to manual as there doesn't seem to be a kit for that yet. The window motor has overheated a couple times already when trying to open when it's frozen shut. I prefer a manual window so I'm gonna keep occasionally checking to find a way to make that happen. Has full sized spare on matching stock rim. Did not get the key to dismount however so I'll be addressing that with the dealer when I go in for my next maintenance check. The bottle jack that comes with it doesn't look like it's tall enough to do any good. I haven't tried it. I just went ahead and threw a floor jack in the bed to be safe. Overall- I love this truck and am mostly satisfied. If you need a work truck and wanna stick with Toyota, go with the Tundra instead. If you just need something for a daily with the option to carry occasional loads or take off-roading for a little fun, this is a decent pick. Has its pros and cons just like any other vehicle out there, but Toyota reliability is hard to beat. I expect my Taco to last a very long time, although I am considering swapping to a V6 eventually for a little more towing power. Probably after the warranty on the motor expires. And keep the 4cyl to use in a Corolla or something since these engines are near bulletproof.

Nice Ride
Just bought a TRD off rd for the wifey. Seems like a really great truck. I see so many reviews saying it has no power, rides rough, and shifts crazy. I call BS!! These people evidently don’t know much about vehicles. This truck has plenty of power, the transmission shifts firmly and strong, “I live in WV by the way”, and it’s rides much softer than the 19 Ford Escape we traded in!!! As for as longevity, time will tell.

Traded in my 2008 for a 2021 after owing it for over 10 years. Reliability and resale value on the Tacoma, can’t go wrong.
