Great! But... I hated the transmission.

A tad underpowered. The biggest issue, the transmission. I rate it a 2 out of 10 just because it does run. Otherwise, worst transmission on the market.... I sold it four months in. Too bad Chevrolet can't put quality parts on a truck. the colorado is much smoother and responsive but they use crap for materials so... pick your poison.

Good, But Has Issues

2021 Toyota Tacoma SR5 4dr Access Cab 4WD 6.1 ft. SB (3.5L 6cyl 6A)

Feels like a solid truck with the exception of most of the interior plastic panels. They're pretty cheap and hard. The radio, 8" premium non JBL, is horrible. Piston slap. The engine has a knocking noise when cold that seems to almost go away when it's warmed up. Lots of research says piston slap. I cannot find a definitive answer on whether it is harmful to the engine or not. I will take it to the dealer and see what they say.

Only "truck" with manual transmission!

TRD Sport 4x4 6 speed , 12/12/2020
2021 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 4dr Access Cab 6.1 ft. SB (3.5L 6cyl 6A)

Manual lovers, there is still an option! The primary reason I purchased my 2021 Tacoma TRD Sport access cab 4x4 was because it was available with a 6 speed manual. I strongly considered the Jeep Gladiator, GMC Canyon and GMC Sierra also. The Gladiator is also available with a "stick", but it didn't feel like a truck...it felt, well, like a Jeep (no offense to Jeep lovers), and the bed was too short for my needs. I would have gone with a TRD Off Road as the locker was a big desire, but the O.R. isn't available as an access cab, so the Sport was the clear choice. I wish Toyota (and others) would offer the manual in other models/ configurations. I wanted a 8' long bed, and only need a regular cab, so I would have purchased a GMC Sierra regular cab, long bed with a 5.3 if it was still offered with a stick (sorry GM, you lost a long time customer). I don't like all of the "technology" that the Tacoma has (mine, like most of them, has the technology package option). I wanted a basic truck with some options and a stick, but had to get all of the tech stuff that I will never use, and may need to remove to suit my needs, in order to get a manual transmission. For example; the grill guard that I just ordered isn't compatible with the forward collision sensor. And who needs any cruise control with a stick anyway!? I like this truck, but I'm not "in love" with it, so I can't give it a 5 star review. The powerband feels VERY narrow, from around 4,100 to 6,000 rpm (redline), and anything below 4,000 feels very weak. I expected better performance from a truck with a 4.30 gear and 278 horsepower, and I don't see the need for the six speed in this truck. I drive on the highway, and, even at 75 miles per hour, I feel little difference between 5th and 6th (I have less than 1,000 miles on the truck so over time my feeling on this may change.) But I can't really complain because at least I can choose my gear. The brake pedal feels awkward at first push, and I've noticed that the rpm's increase when the brake is pushed (I've heard others mention this too, so it must be a Toyota thing) and when the truck is in neutral and stopped. Also, the truck feels "tinny", not solid like most trucks. I've owned many vehicles and most of them where manual shifts. I've had 4, 6, and 8 cylinders (some cars, some trucks) with manuals. Overall, I love the stick, but only like the truck.

Brand New Truck with Brand New problems.

I will say that the Toyota Tacoma Sr5 Double Cab is looks really nice. I have been told that Tacomas are trucks that are built very well and will last for years and years to come. I will say that this is the first time in my life that I went to a dealership gotten a brand new car. With that being said I am having a problem. When ever I am decelerating, the RPM goes up. Specially when gears are changing the the speed is changing from 40 to 38 or from 20 to 29. sometimes, even the speed also raises and I feel a pull and then it starts going down like normal. I too it to the dealer because I Still have warranty from factory. And then found nothing. I am in the city and I do continuous stops. It is very annoying driving like that. I also feel like I am going to hit someone if I am not being careful. At the dealership I was told that the computer did not pick anything up. And that I need to be on a look out for recalls. I made a research ( after I bought the truck) and I see Transmission and gear problems from 2016 all the way to 2020. So there is nothing yet out there for 2021. if you want to buy this truck, wait until they fix recalls and go from there. Or you'll be frustrated. ( any help on this please let me know as well. )

torque and shift, don't buy

First of all the 2016 through present are essentially the same as to my review. I had a 2009 Tacoma that I loved. 4 liter, good torque, and seldom shifted unless reasonably necessary. It had 124k miles on it and in excellent condition, but in late 2017 my wife encouraged me to buy a new 2018 as a Christmas present. I thought it would be only better so I went for it . Should have checked reviews. A very big mistake. I kept my 2009 for a couple of months after because I didn't really like the 2018. Finally I decided to give it a long term chance as the dealer told me the transmission would learn my driving style and be more palitable. Wrong. Supposedly the 3.5 engine would give better gas mileage, but it doesn't as it's downshifting all the time because it doesn't have the torque of the 4.0. It will shift 1000 rpm at the slightest rise in elevation. I like that the truck will let me know if I'm about to run into something but thats it. I'm waiting for Toyota to fix this engine problem by either going back to the 4 liter (which is still available on the 4 Runner) or another appropriate option. I like keeping a good vehicle for awhile but I can't wait to get rid of this one. Toyota better act soon or I'm going away. I tell everyone to not buy newer than 2015. I basically dislike this truck after being a GO AWAY FAN of my 2009. Please don't buy this truck until Toyota fixes the engine tranny combo. If you do buy it, it will only encourage them not to fix it. If you owned a 2015 or older you would know what I mean. They really screwed up a great truck.
