Perfect Midsize SUV!
This Highlander is an excellent choice for a moderately priced midsize suv. The maintenance has been minimal and I am pleased with how it is holding up. Great car for short and long trips with excellent comfort and convenience.

Great vehicle!
We’ve had our Highlander XLE since it had 60k miles on it, now has 188k. Starts every day, driven daily with no issues. At 120k the radiator got a small pinhole in it and at 187k new cv axles. I’ve been pulling a 6x12 enclosed trailer so the cv axles are no surprise. Little things like the drivers sun visor and plastic on side of drivers seat breaking are common but nothing major on the drivetrain. Our mechanic says he has customers with over 300k on their Highlander’s and they still keep running! I feel the 3.5 is a well proven motor and now unfortunately they are being replaced with a turbo-4cyl. Fuel mileage is around 25-26mpg and I’ll take that with the reliability of Toyota. Hope this review helps anyone looking at one of these vehicles.

Fantastic
Purchased with 60k miles, now has 195k. Great quality, as you would expect from a Toyota. If you’re like me and not a fan of the new turbo garbage, the 3.5 is a great motor. Plenty of power, very reliable. I’ve replaced cv axles (I’d say because I pull a 5x12 enclosed trailer occasionally) and a radiator (pin hole from a rock) in a 195k miles. Only real issues is the control piece for drivers seat has broken off and kind of hangs there, the radio occasionally resets itself, and the drivers sun visor won’t stay up on its own anymore. This is all minor stuff, drivetrain still solid. Great suv, May see if I can get 300k out of it!

Approaching 100,00 miles - not great
Up until this point, we had a couple major issues and now began to have everything break as we near 100,000 miles. The lift gate and ball joints failed around 60,000. The alternator failed around 85,000. I’m very surprised by this as I did not experience any need for major repairs in my Camry, even still and it now has over 150,000 miles. At 95,000 mile we now have a $6,000 axil related repair being worked on in the front end. Thank God for the warranty we purchased. It saved us $10k out of pocket in repairs. As soon as it expires, we are done with this car!

Questionable quality
Questionable quality I have the 2014 XLE model. Mechanically she has not been a problem but there are some little quirks that Toyota never figured out. The navigation performs poorly, my sunroof never closed properly and the hinges on the rear cargo door were constantly leaking grease. If the back-and-forth with Toyota they finally replaced the hinges however they are leaking once again. What I buy another Toyota? Probably not at this point.

Less reliable than toyota used to be
I have the highest level and certain things are great. The interior is nice and the electronic mirror warnings etc are great. What is bad? Well two major items and one minor. The liftgate struts are under strength. I had to have those replaced and the dealer put in new ones that were twice as large as the originals. Defect by Toyota but still cost me about 2,000. Second really major item it the variable valve intake gears on the cams go out at around 150,000. It's design flaw. You will hear what sounds like can full of marbles on start up. because it can drop metal into your pan you have the option of replacing them for about 5k or a rebuilt engine for about 12 k. I opted for the rebuilt engine. The third thing is Toyota navigation is horrible. If you are in a major city its ok but if you live in a rural area it is not good. It misdirects you. My wife always loved toyota for it's reliability but I can tell you that reliability isn't what it used to be and Toyota will charge you for the repairs needed when their design was bad.
