After 12 years

Nice looking car, paint still looks great after 12 years. Previously owned a 1988 SSE. Replaced original two position sport struts with Monroe Reflex after 75,ooo miles. Reflexes are great! Avg 16 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. Traction control is nice in snow. Intake manifold gaskets leaked at 55,ooo then again at 102,000 miles. Luckily engine wasn't damaged. Transmission replaced at 75,000 miles because trans yoke body went bad. Car would surge at highway speed when going up a slight incline. There's a tech bulletin on this but no recall. Overall I really like the car.

What GM was, and is not today

This is the most reliable car on the planet. I now have 185,255 miles on it and has never had more than $500 worth of repairs since I bought it 10 years ago new with 7 miles on it. I'd recommend this 1997 to buy used over the other two newer ones any day. The 1997 "3800" engine is what Japanese quality motors are today.

Very good but not without issues

Purchased used a year ago at around 64,000 miles, now has 85,000. I'm used to small cars, so I immediately fell in love with the ride, which is the best ride I've ever had. Also like the power. The dash is very good, but has too much on it. The seats are fantastic!! Problem, engine light randomly comes on, but no problem found. Also, even with new tires doesn't hold road as well as my previous small cars. Fuel mileage is awful, only 21 highway and 16 city. Overall I've been very happy with the car, but worried the engine light issue is a sign of a disaster to come. Hope not, because it is excellent otherwise.

Our Bonneville SSE comments!

Had terrible experience with the Goodyear tires that came on the car. Goodyear nor Pontiac would make them good even though we were told they were defective. Had to go to outside sources for a decent ride. Wheels were also defective. They pitted (all 4) and Dealer replaced in warranty. The interior dash area is not practical. The trunk lid (after a rain or wash) drips water into the trunk area when it is open. Other than these few things, we have enjoyed the car. The interior is very comfortable riding. The design and changing color paint job is very attractive. Original owners

Slipping Transmission

At 68,000 miles the transmission starting slipping and had to be replaced. There are many reports that for two years the transmission needed to be flushed or you had to end up rebulid the transmission. Other than that it's a good car.
