Great Driving E43

Our family already has 2 BMW's, so I came into this purchase with a bias. We bought an E43 Premium 3 after looking at other sport sedans in this price range (BMW 540, Audi S/A 6/7, Maserati Ghibli, Lexus GS were main options we considered). Even though some were slightly faster and more sporty looking, overall we chose the interior/exterior styling and capability combination of the E43. We've had it for a month now, and so far so good... and so FUN! Even though we liked the e300 when it came out, I couldn't come to grips with the 4 cylinder - so the E43 offers a sporty-driving alternative to the e300 without the race capability (and 6-figure price) of the E63. The power is great, the options are awesome - and once you get used to using voice commands (we find them quickest vs. COMMAND system menus for some functions) it's easy to master. Love Sport+ mode for fun and the option to go full-manual shift. Challenges so far: As some other reviewers, we have not been immune to software issues. We've had strangely intermittent navigation and HD radio issues, with the dealer still waiting on the latest patch for one of the issues. Software issues alone keep me from rating 5 across the board. OVERALL: After one month and 1500 miles, we would definitely do it again! 18 month update: more electronics problems and reliability issues. Have had new GPS antenna put in, front brakes replaced @ 17k miles, repair for left rear door "cable misrouted", and have had 3 tires replaced (versus 1 in all 5 of our other cars). Still drives / looks great, but we're not impressed with the quality.

Traded in a 2014 E350 and it's an upgrade.

Our lease was up on our 2014 E350, which we loved. We weren't even thinking about the new E300 because of the change from the 302 hp V6 to the 241hp turbo 4. I did have the opportunity to experience how smooth an powerful the new generation of twin turbo 4's can be as I recently also bought a BMW 328i. Two days after picking up the E300 I took it on a 500 mile trip that I did often in the 2014. There is really no discernible difference in performance between the two engines in speeds up to 90 mph. The 4 with the 9 speed transmission is incredibly smooth. The full torque is available at very low rpm so the car felt just as powerful, fast and quick as the V6. Both cars have a similar smooth ride with the new car having a little better driving dynamics. The beautiful exterior and interior styling, amazing seats with power thigh bolsters, and cutting edge safety and entertainment tech makes the new car superior to the 2014. Our new car stickered about $4k less than the 2014, but overall was better equipped. Although I don't have adaptive headlights or pano sunroof this time, having lane departure, self parking, autonomous braking, Appleplay, etc makes up for it. Don't hesitate being concerned about the shift from the 6 to the turbo 4. It makes no difference in real world driving. Compared to the BMW turbo 4, the Benz is smoother and quieter, the BMW is quicker and more athletic. The E350 was the best sedan I ever owned and the new E300 is clearly better. Surprisingly though the gas mileage is not that much better: 2 mpg on the highway - 29 for the 2014 and 31 for the new one, both 4matic. This was at average speeds of 75-80. UPDATE at 1 year. I will not be getting another Mercedes when this lease is up. Car performs well, but the technology does not work as advertised. Appleplay conks out, the screen goes blank, nav is very awkward to use, voice recognition is not very good, self Park is useless, Mercedes app doesn’t work right. Mercedes service doesn’t have answers. Beautiful car, nice highway ride, but not really an upgrade on the old E350. Next time I’ll be looking at Audi or BMW.

Avoiding Pot Holes and Manhole Covers

My wife loves this car and is her main form of transportation. I leased this car primarily because of all the advanced technology and was concerned that maybe there would be lots of maintenance issues. None so far, but to my surprise the run flat tire system got my attention--no spare! Prior to leasing I drove the car up and down the freeway that was close by and the ride was as expected. I did not look in the trunk and had no idea there wasn't a spare. (I've owned E350s for 30 years and never was there not a spare.) Living in San Diego county you get used to driving on roads with pot holes and when you hit one with this car it is really jarring and even though the car was probably engineered for these tires, there is a marked suspension bounce and a slight bit of skipping if you happen to be in a turn. You feel EVERY bump in the road with the run flats. (I also purchased a battery operated tire inflator just in case the pressure ever drops on the tires when I'm traveling in the hinterland as you are only guaranteed 50 miles running flat. Research indicates you may even have to replace the tire, which are very expensive and according to reviews are somewhat hard to find, and in worst case you wipe our the rim too--really expensive.) It is very obvious that a lot of effort has been made to reduce the weight of the car by eliminating some enhancements that used to be on the 2014. I have had almost zero maintenance issues in the 3000 miles the car has been driven, the only one is that the trunk lid does not spring fully open as it did when new causing a few head bumps. Otherwise we are very pleased with this machine--plenty of horsepower for us (85 years and counting). The ambient lighting, massaging seats, USB/Phone capability all are very pleasing. Wished they had stayed with the same navigation software as the 2014. Yes, the seats could be fully covered as before, but again that is probably a weight thing. Have not yet decided if I would purchase this car primarily due to my issues with the run flats.

This is my 6th Mercedes and 4th E class. The 2017 E300 is nothing like my previous E's. I have had electrical problems, brake problems, keyless go issues and the command center freezes up. When the command center freezes, all features of the car are inoperable-the nav, phone, radio, etc. The dealership has had the car multiple times and can not seem to get everything repaired. The command center just went blank today on the way to the office today. Also, be prepared to hear squeaks and buzzes from the dash and doors. The dealership has been able to remedy SOME of them. Please don't make the same mistake I did and get 'wowed' by the 'technology'. The controls are difficult to figure out and require multiple actions for simple adjustments. Lastly, the four cylinder is not appropriate for a car of this caliber. Drive it for a long time before deciding.

This car is packed with state of the art technology, which I love. One day, I was driving along with my sister in heavy traffic. She said something that distracted me, and I took my eyes off the road for mere seconds when traffic came to a sudden halt. As I refocused on traffic, I was headed for a rear-end collision, and I was too close to apply enough pressure on the brake to stop the car. Thank God the electronics took over. The car started beeping, letting me know I was too close to the car in front of me while it simultaneously applied enough pressure on the brake to stop the car, avoiding an accident. Love my car; it's a keeper!
