For the small amount of time that I've owned this car, it's absolutely fantastic! However, this car has been in our family ever since 2002. It has an automatic transmission and everything in the car is going strong even after 190,000 miles! This car has battled through many trips from New York to Florida and the only problem during all of those trips was that the driver's side window ceased to function. It was promptly fixed and works as good as new! The story on this car is that my parents had bought this vehicle new the year this came out. This car has mostly highway miles. 3 days a week, it travels 140 into the city and back home for the past 9 years. Never has it broken down!

I can't say enough good things about this car. I'm still on the original clutch and original water pump. Just change the oil every 3,750 miles and perform the major service every 30K miles. Amazing car.

This morning, Jan 26, 03 at 12:09, three friends and I were involved in an automobile accident in my 2002 Mazda Protegé ES. The accident involved a speeding pickup truck. The impact occured MAYBE 20 degrees of an angle away from being a head-on collison. My protegé is totalled. All four of us walked away. All four.

I needed a second car for the family and immediately suggested to find another '02 Protege. You cannot beat them. You can easily get 200k+ on these cars. Very reliable. Perfect car fo a teenager as a first car.

We bought a 2.0 ES GT with a 5 spd brand new back in 01. The car was the best value in its class (for Japanese makes). Engine has always sounded rattley at start up, though this hasn't caused a real problem yet. The EGR valve needed replacement at about 60,000 kms. Now at 75,000 kms the alternator failed. These two problems don't bother me as much as the corrosion problems I have had with this car. I live in Toronto, and they use road salt heavily, but it is still no excuse for the amount of rust this thing has on it for its age. Every piece of metal attached to this car is rusty , body panels or any mechanical part. Even the horn has failed due to corrosion. Mazda is still behind the rest.

It's my first car. Bought it new in August 2002. Have been driving it ever since then and no real problems occured. If I have to be really picky, then here are some minor issues: (1) twice in winter morning, with temperature at around minus 20 celsius (I live in Toronto), the stereo stopped functioning --- the problem disappeared next day. (2) experiences over snowy roads is not as good, especially when making turns, the car could slide sideways. (3) My girl friend complained that air circulation is restrained in certain modes; from reading the reviews here that seems to be a common complain, but it didn't bother me that much. Overall, the car has been fun to drive and reliable.

I have owned this car new since I just got out of college. I have revved the engine to redline on a regular basis (I have a stick), and maxed out at a top speed of over 140 mph (on the way to Vegas - note the throttle just shuts out till your speed drops down). I have to say that this is probably the best car I have ever owned for the price! I have only done quasi regular oil changes, one set of breaks, one set of tires, and a fluid/transmission flush, oh and a battery replacement, that's it! No lights or fuses have been replaced, I have never even replaced the batteries in my remote keyless! The spare set still looks brand new! She is paid off, and I am keeping her and getting a CX7!

November 2002, I purchased my 2002 Mazda Protege. I have had no problems. She stands at 86,700 miles. Interior great still looks like new. I love my car and it is the 2nd one I have purchased. I used to own a 1998 Mazda Protege manual drove her to 134,000 miles without changing the gear shift. June 2010, I was rear ended on the highway while my car was in motion. She ended up with 1,160 dollar worth of damage and still drives great. It is a bit nerve racking as the new cars seem to have lots of electrical problems. I thought about buying a new Mazda but a bit nervous with all the electrics. Cars are not made the way they use to be. So do I hold on to my baby?

I bought my 02 Protege ES new. It was a fantastic car, fun to drive, excellent handling, good performance, comfortable, decent gas mileage, great safety features, and completely reliable. I had the dealer find me an ES that had the ABS/Side Airbags/Power Sunroof package. Gas mileage on the highway hovered around 32 mpg, low 20's in city driving. The transmission shifted smoothly and easily, the engine reved up quickly and offered decent power. The real treat with this car is the handling, its fantastic, and especially nice with the sleeper looks. Its feels a lot faster and sportier than it is. I replaced the front brakes at 70k, 2 sets of tires, and oil changes. No problems in 115K.

I love my Protege. It might not be the fastest car, or strongest car out there, but you can still leave a lil Civic in the dust. I'm into the tuner world and I’m trying to do some modifications to it but it’s hard to find parts for it and when I do find some aftermarket parts, they are really expensive. All in all it is a great, reliable, and fun car to have.

I love to drive it, looks great and feels great. Interior looks quality made, no cheap plastic here. But it lacks power, needs more than 130 hp but it still gets me places. If having to choose between reliability and speed I would choose reliability and that is why I chose the protege. Never gives me a problem (knock on wood...hope not) and people are attracted to it, saying they did not know mazda made a car like that. Overall, great car, needs boost though.

I inherited this car as it was my mothers. When she passed (2008) it had a whopping 14,000 on the car. She literally only drove it to store and church. I am not joking. In 2008 the car was still like new and the paint clear coat was coming off. The paint is crap. The seats are fairly nice except they are not comfortable on trips. My husband is 6'2 and he has trouble with sufficient room driving it on trips. The fuel economy is excellent. When I worked and drove 22 miles a day to a job the car would run on a tank of gas for two weeks. It's a wonderful car if you are not around 6' tall. I still have the car today and the clear coat is almost gone. Mazda didn't do too good on the paint with this one. One last thing is the car has terrible road noise. If you are in the rear seat you can't hear anyone speaking to you from the front

I bought my 2002 Protoge in October of 2002 and it now has 11500 miles on it. The handling of the car is more than I could have expected. The car has very precise steering (perhaps a bit of oversteer) and the suspension is tighter than most in its class. This makes cornering quite fun, especially with the 195/50 R16 Dunlap tires. Living in Syracuse I had to buy a set of Blizzak's to get anywhere. The Dunlap's were useless in snow. If I had a problem with the car it would be that it lacks power. The engine doesn't get into its power band until around 4000 rpm. I highly recommend the 5 speed to get full enjoyment of the engine.

This car is very fun to drive. Without question the best handling car for the money. This car has a great engine and a nice interior. Small things need changing to make this car the best small car.Rear window is hard to see out of when backing up. Gas mileage could be better. Expierenced average of 17.3mpg in mixed driving. Best highway mileage expierenced was 24. Both way below the sticker. Only other complaints were build quality and broken trunk release. Build quality not up to Honda or Toyota.

If reading about this car being underpowered worries you, then don't buy it. There is not much low end power, and at high revs it's not very smooth or efficient. It's not a sports car, find something else if that's what you want (that's why I am selling mine after 2 months). As a family car driven sensibly, the Protege is comfortable, solid, handles well and stops quickly. It has plenty of room for 4 adults, and generally it's pleasant to drive.

My protege has been very reliable. I have kept up with changing the oil every 3000 miles and change the other fluids as scheduled. When I first purchased the car, I'd crank the engine and couldn't hear it running. Now many miles later, I can hear just a small purr. I've had no transmission problems and no problems that have left me stranded. I'm hoping this car will last til over 200k and then I'm buying another Mazda.

The Protege rides smooth and has plenty of low-end power so you don't have to downshift for every little hill. But there is a horrible problem when you open the rear windows. The window makes a fluttered whistling sound, and if both rear windows are opened there is a very loud thumping wind noise that nearly hurts your ears.

I bought a used black 2002 Mazda Protege DX last year. It was a very good price, and had low miles. I must say that this car is wonderful in many ways. Not only is it a great looking car on both the outside and inside, but it's also got a little zip to it. Air conditioning works great, and the bass is nice when turning up the music. I found the performance very good for this type of car, and I enjoy speeding off when the light turns green. Granted this is no sports car and it won't win races, but the reliability and fuel economy, on top of being a great car overall wins me over.

Zoom-Zoom, indeed. I've only had it for a month, and I love it already. The new car smell is gone, it's badly in need of a wash, due for an oil change, and what I'm left with is an all-around terrific car. It just does everything well, whatever I want it to do, whenever I want to do it. I'm glad they decided to use the 2 liter engine in all models this year; it makes my humble DX as quick and fun as the more expensive versions. Mine is a 5-speed, which I recommend. Seating and visibility are great, ride is a bit stiff, but boy, does it handle.

We lost our 1998.5 VW Jetta last year when we were rearended (insurance totaled the car). With very little money and no desire to release again we again looked to the Protege' (my 2nd choice when I got the Jetta). I call my car a poor man's Jetta because it has much (but not all) of the "fun to drive" as our VW. It is by all accounts a do-fer (it'll do-fer now) and I will say it's much more comfortable in long drives than the VW and a much better value (I do not miss the trips to the fancy VW service centers).

If you're looking for a lot of zoom, zoom, the 2002 Mazda Protege' is the car for you. Excellent performance, sharp on turns, fast and sporty. Roomy interior with plenty of leg room, however, the seats are too hard and not very comfortable, and the suspension is too tight, making for a very uncomfortable ride. If you don't mind a rough ride, this sports car is a good choice in the mid priced compact sedans.

In all, a good car for around town. Nice style, easy to maneuver, steady suspension. The car has good torque for start-stop driving in crowded traffic. All of the knobs and switches are easy to locate and use. The down side? It loses its "oomph" way before 60mph. There is a very irritating wind-noise over 65mph. I don't know if it is the same for every protege, but mine has a high pitch wistle at 70mph+ that seems to come from around the windshield (the dealer has been unable to fix).

This is a great car but I have had a few mishaps. First, two Dunlop tires were damaged after a mishap with a curb and not too hard of a hit. The tire walls were damaged after 9 months of owning the car. No warranty on the tires and Dunlop would not consider the tires to be defective. A small part broke on the cars heating fan, CD has started to skip but was covered under warranty. The service at the dealership has been impeccable.

We were in search of a 4 door, compact car with an automatic for a reasonable price. When we drove the ES, we were very impressed. Interior very nice. 1% over invoice pricing and a $1500 Mazda rebate sealed the deal for us.

My car is a fully loaded 5 speed with all the options in sunlight silver metallic. This is the best looking compact car on the market, and the only one still made in Japan, so the quality and relabilty is first rate. Handles like a go cart, fast direct steering, great peformance tires and suspension tuning, comfortable seats, great gauges and interior lighting in red. Car is very quiet at speed, you can barely hear the engine idle. Fit and finish are excellent and very up market for a car in this price range, much nicer inside (ex version) than civic, corrola, elantra, lancer, focus etc, I drove them all.

I drove the civic(too boring)-Focus (too many recalls)and ElantraGT(???) and went back to the protege ES because it feels more solid and doesnt make you feel like your in a small economy sedan

I said yeah... he said you should have had 2 done already. The true cost of ownership on this car is really low. All I have done is the timing belt, water pump, oil, tires, rotors, just basic needs of a car. I would recommend this car to anyone I have had great success with it and bought my wife a Mazda 3

I absolutely love my little Protege! It's fun to drive, is awesome in corners, and looks great. I still get a thrill when I see it all shined up, even more than a year after buying it (mine is black, with a mask on the front). I laughingly call it my "poor girl's sports car" because it's the closest thing to a sports car I can afford. I'm very pleased with the handling and performance of this car. After test driving one, I knew I had to have it! It gives me the sporty look I like, but has the room for me to play "soccer mom" when toting my teenager and her friends around.

The Mazda Protege is only second to one vehicle that I have driven before it. That vehicle would be a BMW 3 series. Other than that, this is the most fun car I have ever driven. The 5 spd manual transmission is easy and comfortable to drive. The price was also amazing. I would have easily paid much more money for this car, and it would have been worth it.

In the past before purchasing this Protege, I had owned Honda LX's and Civics. All had great engines, but all would succumb to extreme body rust. Living in the Northeast this is expected. Since buying my 2002 Protege, I have no problem with rust or engine problems. Mazda also stands behind their product. Dealerships are hard to obtain. The problem encountered is tires. Original tires wear out quick. Snow tires are expensive, and all-seasons are no better. I bought Brigestone winters and run Dunlap summers. By far the best car I have owned!

This car is hands down the best economy car you can (could) buy. Yes, it could use more power, but it's still peppy. The handling is better than cars costing a lot more, and the brakes are the best I have ever used, period. The Protege is truly a budget BMW; so much more fun than a Sentra, Civic, or Corolla. It looks good, too; after 3 years, I still find myself turning around to look at it as I walk away. It's a little loud on the highway, but the high-performance tires have a lot to do with that. I usually get 25mpg around town and a bit over 30 on the highway. My last Protege (a 1990 model) was running strong at 225,000 miles, and I don't expect this one to be any different.

Great little car. Just purchased for my 18 year old daughter. Man is she getting comments about how great it looks. I drove it home for 50 miles from the dealership-what a Hoot to drive. Lots of power for this little ride. Sports suspension hugs the corners. Kids in California would love to get a hold of this one and turn it into a Fast and Furious 9 second qtr. turner. Great value for the buck.....

A very solidly built and very fun to drive.I test drove the Civic,Corolla,Sentra and Elantra GT but went back to the Protege ES because of the classy styling and excellent handling not found on the others. Also, with more standard equipment and the available ABS/Side Air bag/Moonroof option makes it a great deal.

I have had my car for about 1 year and 10 months. The car has been trouble free. The only thing I have done is change the oil and rotate the tires. I was involed in a major accident which caused $7,600 damage. The car did perform well in the accident and the crumple zones did function properly. My only concern is that the seat broke backwards and it pulled up out of the floor. What troubled me was the Mazda REFUSED to talk with me about this issue, they said I had to have my insurance company or an attorney call them, I think that is very odd and suspicious.

I researhed extensively before I settled on this car. I rented Hondas, Toyotas, and Saturns just to compare to the the Mazda PROTEGE ES. I bought the MAZDA PROTEGE ES automatic with all the trimmings. There is no greater feel when everyone looks at your car at the traffic light before you ZOOM ZOOM away. When you drive the MAZDA ES, it causes jealousy among other drivers. Therefore, I urge all new MAZDA PROTEGE ES owners to be humble on the roadway. THE ES exudes strength and sexiness. This car comes HIGHLY recommended. I recommend you look in a Thesaurus for the word MAZDA. My Thesaurus has the words- MOST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK
