2025 Mazda CX-50 2.5 S Premium 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl 6A)

Mazda isn’t a luxury brand. Its four-cylinder engines aren’t racers. A vehicle like this—in this price range with the above-mentioned caveats—isn’t going to introduce a new paradigm in any single automotive category. The CX-50 takes everything that every other manufacturer has already done with smaller-sized crossover SUVs for two decades now, distills them down to their desired functions, separates the chaff, then weaves it all back together with only the positive aspects remaining—and it manages to sell it for under $40k. I love my CX-50. I won’t pretend to be an objective auto-guru giving you my professional, dispassionate opinion. I had my last vehicle for 14 years and have been saving and searching for a replacement for the last five. I had a big list of five-seater SUVs I spent months researching and paring down. The CX-50 was at the top. There’s many reasons for that: The cost — I bought a brand new Premium model. $35k. You can get a lower trim for less, or a Turbo for more if you want the extra power. I struggled with the Turbo desire. Even though I don’t have one, I’m not upset after the time I’ve spent with mine. The safety — Check the NTSB reports and videos yourself. It’s phenomenal. The comfort — Premium trims and below come with 17” wheels instead of larger. These wheels combined with the higher suspension make for a stable ride without removing the feel of being connected to the road. Some want none of that feel, and that’s fair. I’m not like that. I need to feel what and how I’m riding. This vehicle allows that without making it uncomfortable. The interior seats and positions make it easy to enjoy the ride. The driver and passenger seats are bucket-style, my favorite. Being a small-not-mini cSUV, the seats may seem narrower than some might like—curved on each side, the actual space to "sink" into is more limited than it first appears. If you’re a bulkier person, you may want more room. But I’m skinny (and tall, yet I’ve never felt vertically cramped), and the seats provide me ample room and cradle my frame very naturally. Despite the Premium trim not sporting the premium leather that I've been used to for years now—they're a combo of synthetic leather and fabric weaved vertically down the center—I haven't felt a moment of discomfort, even on long drives. Most (maybe all?) trims feature power lumbar support, too, and that significantly increases the number of viable seat-and-back positions for your chair. I'm excited to try the seat warmers this winter, too, which will be a first for me. I will level some criticism at the placement of the front seat cup holders, though. You do get the option of holders placed in both the front driver and passenger doors, but your primary cup holders are located right under the dashboard instrument panel—directly in front of the shifter, tucked into a nook-like space. My initial fear was that it would be possible to easily nudge the shifter when you very much don't want to, which turned out to be overblown. But if you step out of your car and reach back in to take your cup of coffee with you, prepare to lean over the console awkwardly and then cautiously weave your arm (and coffee!) backwards to avoid snagging the steering wheel. It's a minor complaint, but one I deal with typically at least twice a day. The power — It’s a four-cylinder engine. This is why I say “know what you want” in the title. You’re not gonna win drag races (unless maybe you splurge for the Turbo), so if that’s your thing then look elsewhere. But it DOES have the giddy-up I need to feel safe overtaking and entering busy intersections and freeways. Unlike many fours, Mazda’s Skyactiv engine is naturally aspirated, drawing more power from ambient airflow, and combines it with a very active cylinder shutoff strategy that compensates for the more aggressive use of fuel, maintaining a balance of power with satisfactory fuel economy (but in 2025, the combined 28mpg average is admittedly leaning more to the lower end of acceptable). The tach kicks up higher than I expected, but nowhere near the redline. The actual output surprised me; it reaches 0-60 in 8 seconds, better than the spec sheet claims. I honestly expected weaker. Bonus! I also want to give special attention to Mazda's decision to include multiple drive modes that can be toggled on-the-fly with the MiDrive switch: Normal keeps the above-mentioned balance of responsiveness and fuel economy, Off-road appropriately summons the U in the SUV moniker and allows this vehicle a very satisfying drive experience on backroads and in inclement weather, and Sport mode (which I guess invokes the S?) keeps the engine running at a higher RPM to allow for more active shifting and decreases the latency between the clutch and the shift input. Plus, you have the option of manually controlling the gears with a simple lean of the shifter to the left; suddenly you're driving a standard without the clutch! (Or more accurately, you're getting about 65% of the manual transmission experience since you don't have to downshift.) The manual control significantly increases the control I have over the vehicle—but only when I want it. The tech — Lots of driver-assist features, but a lot of them feel like more basic versions of advanced systems other higher-tier vehicles offer. They’re still useful, though I don’t really feel that I “need” them. However, the Infotainment interface is wonderful! The screen IS touch-capable, but I hate touchscreens in cars, and Mazda offers Commander control knobs within arms’ reach of the center console. Adapting to them only took a couple hours, and I have touched the screen one time since first setup. I LOVE the Commander knobs and dials so much, and I know others don’t like them despite not giving them a chance. Give them a chance! They’re game-changers! The only tech I would advise on is the radar cruise control: It’s nice to have it and works well as long as you keep an active eye on it during drives with traffic that tends to exit in both directions frequently, and on stretches of hilly terrain. The CC attempts to maintain your set speed VERY aggressively and will suddenly drop you into the lowest gear that approaches the redline too closely for my taste. The reliability — It’s a Mazda. It’s reliable. They make cars knowing many of their drivers are “spirited” in their journeys. They’re even giving Toyota a run for their reliability rating money. And with the recent rocket in sales of Mazda’s CX-series of vehicles, there will be parts and knowledge a’plenty out in the wild. The 50 is, admittedly, a newer model for Mazda, the first model releasing just three years ago, so really only time will tell how durable it is. But it's reassuring to know that the broader engineering platform of this vehicle exists in many other forms across other Mazda models with a longer tenure on the road. Are there better vehicles? Yes, obviously—in every category. But for this price point? I would argue no. I was never gonna find anything else that met (and then surprisingly surpassed) my expectations for under $40k. And I expected quite a bit. I’m getting everything I bargained for, and after four vehicles through my life, this is finally the first one I’ve actually been consistently excited to drive day in and day out.

I traded in my 2014 Subaru Forester for a CX-50 Turbo Premium Plus after test driving the Jeep Cherokee, Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4, Volkswagen Tiguan, Kia Sportage, Buick Envision and another Forester. I do wish I had test drove the CX-5 since it is a bit higher - the lower stance of the CX-50 took a little bit of getting used to. Along with the CX-50, I was also really impressed with Cherokee, Envision and CR-V, but after months of mulling over my options and flipping between the four, my mind kept going back to the Mazda - its fun to drive, stylish, comfortable, and has a surprising amount of trunk space. Unfortunately, the large trunk comes at the cost of backseat leg room. It's not a problem for me but may be for prospective buyers. The biggest thing I had to get used to was the turn dial for the infotainment, but after about two weeks I was used to it - I find it easier even in CarPlay since the screen is very far away. I love the way it drives and handles. On the occasions when I am driving someone, they are shocked at the quality and luxuriousness of the interior. It feels like it costs more than $45,000. My only two complaints are the gas mileage and Forward Collision Warning. My Subaru was getting almost 32 MPG - I was filling the tank 2-3 times per month. My CX-50 is being filled once a week. I do understand this because of the turbo engine, but it's still a bit of an adjustment. Forward Collision Warning is a nuisance for me - if I am driving on a dark road at night or approaching a decently large but gradual incline, the FCW will start beeping erratically and alert me to brake and steer away from what is in front of me... even if theres nothing there. It only happens once in awhile, but its very startling when it does. Overall I'm very happy with this car and I recommend Mazda to everyone - it's a safe and luxurious vehicle for a great price.

Be Careful Buying Mazda

2025 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid Premium 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)

I recently purchased a 2025 Mazda CX-50 hybrid premium. At first the vehicle looked amazing. However, after a week of owning the vehicle the idle was rough at startup. It was so much that I called dealership. Pretty much a complete run around and dismissive. Then the passenger side door was running against the front fender. It is so bad paint was coming off the door. Long story short, I contacted Mazda Customer Service who pretty much told me they have no power over dealerships. I learned Mazda does NOT stand behind their products and obviously quality control is a major issue. As far as warranty work, good luck with that. Once you buy the vehicle it's yours. So unless you can be 100% sure the car is without defects don't boy. I thought because it had a Toyota engine in it that it would be good. In the end, I'll lose, at minimum, $9,000 trying to get out of this huge mistake.

I’ve had my Cx50 PP Non Turbo for several months now. Coming from a toyota I can say that the build quality is 10x better with my Mazda and I really love the design inside and out on this car… I also feel very safe in it and its fun to drive (sometimes)… I rate it 3 stars because of its clunky transmission, firm ride and uncomfortable seats. The car has a very bad lag when you’re trying to accelerate, especially driving up hills. Ill be trying to accelerate, nothing will happen and then all of a sudden the car will get a big burst of power. The car bucks when you’re coming to a stop and i’ve taken it to two separate mazda dealerships and they both said its normal and that there are no issues with it… You also feel every crack on the road and the seats are uncomfortable on long drives.

My first Zoom Zoom

I've had my CX-50 for about 3 months. So far I love the vehicle. This is my first SUV I've owned. Coming from a Kia Stinger. I wanted something sporty with some pep. I went with the Turbo preferred. I will say the turbo model rides a littler stiffer. But the 20 inch wheels look much better than the base 17s. MPG has been around 25-28 so not too bad, I'm getting about 360-380 per tank. A lot of people have griped about the infotainment system, but I've had no issues. I actually like having the controls near the gear shift as you do not have to reach. With Apple Car play the screen turns into touch screen. The heads up display is really nice option. If I had a couple complaints it would be the sun roof doesn't open up as far as you would think it would. The cup holders are directly under the hvac controls. So if you use bigger cups it may be a tight fit. I really wish car manufactures would have a spot for your phones built into the car without needing an aftermarket holder. I've only used the wireless charger a time or two. The phone gets really hot, so I've used USB-C ports. If you're looking for better MPG Mazda released a hybrid version that is basically the RAV4 hybrid powertrain in the CX-50. The CX-50s are built at a joint venture factory with Toyota in Alabama. So far so good with my Zoom Zoom.

Early Assessment

Take this review as an early owners assessment (to be refined after further use)...After only 1 week of ownership, I like the car, but not loving it yet. The interior appointments are pretty sweet, and a really comfortable ride. The front seats are super comfortable. I love the handling and quick steering response around curves...but, I almost got creamed by a semi when I tried to quickly accelerate through a a left turn at a traffic light because it wasn't responsive at all! It hesitated through the turn in a way I was not expecting. I tend to be a slightly aggressive driver, and was totally not expecting this lag...lesson learned without death. :-) I like the dash display, but not so much the fact that it's not a touch screen (unless in apple play or Android play mode). The center console & glove box are super small and won't hold much [non-permissible content removed] at all. The rear seating is a little tight, but I found the rear cargo space really spacious. The expansive moonroof is really cool and probably one of my favorite internal features. The seat material and trim are really nice. A pet peeve of mine is that Mazda doesn't provide a printed owners manual! To pay 35k for a vehicle and have then chintz on a $5 manual kind of pisses me off, but I'm an old dude, so prefer a manual in the car if I need it. All in all, I'm giving it an average review....I don't hate it; I don't love it (yet???)

Bring ear plugs. Road noise bothersome

The good: hybrid getting 39 plus mpg overall. Nice red/black seats. Good looking from front, blah from the back. Corners well. The bad: deafening road noise on highway. We measured at 80 to 85 dcb which is equivalent to a manuf.factory floor. You feel every bump /rut. Steering very heavy. Exhausted after a 45 min. drive. Confusing media tech interface. Very hollow, tinny feel to doors when closing. Will be trading in for a Lexus nx350h. Mileage up to 41.3 after 2500 miles. In shop once for a recall on the hybrid system software. Still very noisy on the interstate, but drives more quietly on smooth roads at 45mph. Definitely test drive on a highway if a quiet cabin is an important feature to you.

Overpriced, slow, just kinda chugs along. 2.5 base engine is underpowered for this heavy 3700lb car. Engine just feels out of breath and is reflected by a VERY Hot engine compartment. (a sure sign of trouble as it ages) Transmission jumps and jerks especially at low speeds such as in a parking lot or heavy traffic. Poor brakes, pedal feels like stepping on a brick. very tight and unresponsive. no snow to test the AWD at this time. Info system is a confusing nightmare to operate Overall I'm disappointed.

Rented one of these for a week as this car (and the CX-5) were on my shortlist to buy and I have to say that I’m not that impressed. I love the size of the car, it fits me well. It was easy to find a good comfortable driving position. The car itself is easy to drive. Handling is great as expected and acceleration is more than adequate for my needs. The way reviews talk, I was expecting to be blown away by the so-called “near luxury” interior but I wasn’t. I kept searching for a little cubby for keys and my phone but they are nowhere to be found. Cup holders are pretty far forward and somewhat underneath the dash which can be a challenge. There was still lots of hard plastic with a few rattles going over bumps. Speaking of bumps, going over any imperfection in the road you see the hood flexing which really surprised me. Plenty of wind noise inside the cabin at highway speeds and the engine isn’t exactly quiet under acceleration. The adaptive cruise control is terrible. You have it set but then press the gas to pass a car. After passing, instead of drifting back to the set speed, the car immediately and firmly applies the brakes to slow down. It is slow to react in traffic when the car ahead of you speeds up, the system takes way too long to react. The ACC on my 15 year old Volvo is so much better. I was really hoping that my time with the CX-50 would sell me on the car but it didn’t.

This car gets slightly better gas mileage than advertised. I live in the Land of Perpetual Traffic and have put about 1000 miles on the car so far. My total average is 39.1mpg for combined city/hwy driving. This car handles extremely well. The corners at a slow speed are nice and tight, but even taking an offramp at speed doesn't feel like it's throwing you to the wall. I don't find the road noise excessive at all, even on freeways. The stock stereo is pretty weak, so don't expect that to blow you away. The seats are comfortable, with the lumbar support providing more than needed. The console takes some getting used to, but once you do everything makes sense. I even prefer the "Mazda Dial" now over the touchscreen since I don't have to reach all the way up there. Safety features are well programmed and have caught me once or twice not braking hard enough. Ample storage room and ample leg room. Overall, outstanding experience.

2025 Mazda CX-50 Preferred: Ownership Experience

Rosee, 02/15/2025
2025 Mazda CX-50 2.5 S Preferred 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl 6A)

I'm having some frustrating issues with my brand-new 2025 Mazda CX-50 Preferred, leased in Mesquite, TX, in November. Here are my observations: * Clunking Noise: A noticeable clunking noise started at just 156 miles, occurring in both the front and rear when accelerating from a stop. The dealership told me it's "normal" for this model and would disappear after 1000 miles. I'm now at 2500 miles, and the noise is still there. Has anyone else encountered this? * Side Mirror Visibility: The side mirrors feel very close and offer a limited field of view. Even with the seat adjusted back, it's difficult to see without turning my head, impacting my peripheral vision. The shape of the mirrors also seems to limit visibility, especially for checking the third lane. While the blind spot monitor is helpful, I'd prefer better mirror visibility. * Seat Comfort: The seats are quite firm and uncomfortable, causing back pain for both my wife and me. Additionally, the front seats seem positioned quite low, making it difficult to see out the front for shorter drivers (like myself, at 5'6"). * Unlit Switches: Several interior switches don't illuminate at night, making them hard to locate and operate in the dark. I have to turn on the interior light to find the right buttons. * Remote Start Issue: This is a big one. When I use the remote start, the engine shuts off as soon as I open the door, even though I have the key with me. This seems completely counterintuitive. It should stay running since I have the key, preventing unnecessary wear and tear on the starter. This is a real frustration. * Media Shut-Off: Another annoyance is that the music/media system shuts off immediately when I press the engine start/stop button. There should be an option to keep the media playing even after the engine is turned off. It's frustrating to have the music interrupted every time I park but want to stay in the car for a few minutes. * Drive Mode: I also feel that the CX-50 should default to front-wheel drive (FWD) for better fuel efficiency. It should have a selectable button to engage all-wheel drive (AWD) when needed. Living in suburban Texas, I really don't need AWD all the time, even though the vehicle seems to automatically engage it. Having the option to choose would be much more efficient.

Overall a very nice SUV. Love the design inside and out and with the turbo motor very sporty for a small SUV. Did and extended test drive and the handling and acceleration were great only had 2 issues that were deal breakers for me. Infotainment system was hard to operate and not very user friendly. The biggest complaint were the seats. While they look great they are extremely hard and uncomfortable. Not great lateral support and the seam down the middle of the seat I would compare to having a rock in your shoe.

Fun to drive, interior setup needs work

Overall the drive is great. The hybrid gets amazing gas milage, the main reason I picked this one. But the interior setup is very poor. There is hardly any storage, the piano black huge gear shift cover scratches, and the cupholders are tucked under the dash buttons. The main storage is the center console that has the dual opening doors. This looks cool, but it's just one giant bucket. There's no additional storage anywhere else on the dash other than the above glasses holder. There is a huge chunk of the gear shift cover that is this beautiful glossy bright piano black, the only drawback is that it scratches just from looking at it! It makes me sick to think about what this thing will look like in 5 - 10 years, and I don't even have kids. And lastly, the cup holders are tiny and tucked up in front of the gear shift / under the dash buttons. I can hardly fit anything larger than a medium sized drink in there. Last week I tried to get my cup from home out and it got water all over the gear shift and electric buttons that are contained there.

This is a beautiful, functional vehicle. Its large interior is of good quality. The engine is the A25A FXS from Toyota, with transmission and some suspension if I'm correct. My first impression of the vehicle is that the door has a solid thunk when closed. We purchased the 25' hybrid premium. Coming from a 21' CX30 Premium there are some trade-offs in offerings I"'ve noticed: no heads-up display, no swivel adaptive headlights, and the seat belt straps are not as thick as the 21' cx30 or 21' cx5. It may be me but the vehicle does not feel as solid as my 21'CX5 GT or the 21 CX30 Premium it's noticeable when the rear truck closes it's feels a little hollow if that the correct term. Small tires for the size of the vehicle, however I understand the hybrid is all about MPG. Also when you put the car in reverse the side mirror does not tilt down as the other two models mentioned which was a very useful feature. If you are not used to a hybrid engine you will hear a hum of the engine when accelerating. I drove a Prius for many years so it was not an issue. This vehicle is not as sporty as the Cx30 or Cx5 so I would recommend this vehicle be driven as a cruiser and brake ahead, I've read some alleged reports of premature front brake and rotor wear or replacement. Stay on top of the oil changes on this vehicle. Overall the build quality is good but the models built in Japan are better IMO. Also, I noticed the Mica Black paint on the cx30 was darker, deep black vs this mica black which appeared to have more of a grey hue to it as I compared them side to side when trading in the CX30. Much remains to be experienced on this vehicle. The leather on the seats is on par with Mazda Quality. I do enjoy the panoramic sunroof. There is a rattling noise in the top passenger side which I will have the Service depart. address. The Bose system is nice 7.4 out of 10. One grip I do have about the software update. I used to plug in my iPhone and was able to use SIRI with the Voice assistant button on the steering wheel. Well that's gone, It's now plagued with the Alexa app or the Native Mazda commands which are slow at best. This is a big deal for us since we utilize Siri Apple care play daily. MAZDA YOU NEED TO DUMP ALEXA AND FIX THIS! Infotainment is large and easy to read. Overall were pleased with the vehicle thus far. There seems to be some give and take as each new iteration is offered. Mazda seems to have taken away some standard features on the hybrid premium which were previously associated with other premium trims so it's best to weigh out what features you will need or want the most. We have gotten a few compliments on the look of the vehicle and blacks seems to mute out the large body cladding well.

I considered buying this car as a second car and went to the dealer for a test drive. While the exterior looks good, that's about the only advantage of this car. The interior feels cheap and outdated, even in the top trim. All the buttons and small details look and feel low-quality. Whoever called this a luxury or refined interior must be comparing it to cars from the '90s. The acceleration is also terrible, and the engine is loud. I wouldn’t recommend buying this car—there are plenty of better options on the market.

Overall my CX50 is a solid SUV,My big concern is how poor the ride quality is,it rides on 17 inch with Goodyear tires,a lot of people are switching to a perilli tire for better ride quality,I think I'll be switching as well, not happy spending $900.00 dollars on a car with 4k,that's how bad the ride quality is,other then that the cx50 so far is doing great

Buyers Remorse

Purchased the 2025 Mazda CX50 about 3 months ago. Sorry to report I am experiencing buyers remorse. I wanted a mid size SUV Japanese hybrid and did extensive research on Toyota, Honda and Mazda. At the time of my purchase, the Mazda seemed to win out the competition. What I’ve learned since driving it extensively is a major concern for me. There is a design flaw on the front hood making it difficult to judge in an attempt to park correctly. What you can see from the drivers seat is NOT the entire front hood but a portion of it on both sides. There is approximately 8-10 inches on both sides of the front hood that is not visible from the front seats of the car. This makes it difficult to park between cars, as the drivers side will actually line up almost directly on the left line on the parking space giving the right passenger side a lengthy width of space. I thought I would adjust to this after the discovery but it still remains troublesome for me. I even purchased a seat cushion to give me about 2 inches of added height in the drivers seat to no avail. I am a 5’7 female driver. I also have adjusted the drivers seat to the highest position in hopes of a better view outward, which didn’t help at all. Additionally, the hybrid idles in park extremely loudly, so disturbing that I will be calling the dealership to look at the engine. Another issue is there are NO sensors in the front of the car making it almost impossible to parallel park and even garage parking is difficult. Lastly the car has NO get up and go to enter the highway or even when accelerating after a stoplight. I’ve noticed many drivers go around me to pass me due to the lack of acceleration. It’s frustrating. I will say I appreciate the great gas mileage and the fact that premium gas is not required for this car. The price was also reasonable which was a purchase factor. Oh about the circular wheel in the console which controls and interfaces with the software screen…it is a bit annoying as well but I can tolerate that unlike the other issues I’ve described. Unfortunately, I’m uncertain about our future together. What a bummer.

Aspiring to be a Corolla cross

CX-50 is not for me but I can get if it is for thee. I felt it was underpowered for hilly Colorado terrain and I agree with the other about the front seat. It was the most uncomfortable seat. Back pain every day I drove it. The cabin was nicely appointed and if I didn't have to drive it, I would think the car was a great deal. I felt the engine was coarse but the suspension was pretty decent. Acceleration required to much of the available torque and this, there was more noise than expected. I would be this suv would be as reliable as a Corolla Cross.

My new CX 50 exceeds expectations. While not a luxury vehicle Mazda created an upscale SUV, which looks good, drives well, and provides a lot of amenities for a very reasonable price compared to other vehicles in that class.

First most people agree that in this category it is the sharpest looking vehicle in its class. The interior also is a cut above. The Turbo has great acceleration, the regular engine is adequate fairly average. The driving dynamics are on par with a BMW. Wonderful steering, handling. It is a reliable vehicle. The negatives are the seat can be a bit firm and the ride is firm but that firm ride is a positive towards a great feel of the road ,which makes it enjoyable to drive. The stock radio is terrible. All of the safety features are great.I've experienced no problems.

This is my first Mazda and I so far I love it very comfortable and a nice ride, getting use to the using the way everything is adjusted through the system seems a little confusing. The dealer was great and as I get use to the new way of doing things it will be easier.
