Mazda 2 after 250 miles. Again after 40,000 miles
I had concerns about the Mazda 2 based on other reviewers reports. So far my experience has been very positive. I almost bought a Honda Fit base. But for less money I bought the Mazda2 Touring MT. My feeling is that the Mazda is sportier and more fun to drive. Also I am finding that with careful use of the stick you can get much better economy than reported by EPA. On stop and go commute my mpg is mid to high thirties. I have yet to spend much time on the highway but I won't be surprised to see over 40. I like the interior and the exterior. The build quality is evident. Everything inside and on the dash is intuitive. More later... After 40,000 the Mazda 2 runs fine. It has been good in the winter and gets great gas mileage ~ 35 to 40 mpg. The only problem I had was front rotor warping at 25,000 which I repaired. Not under warranty. I expect to run the car for many more inexpensive years.....Mike After 60,000 miles the Mazda runs fine. I did have to redo the front rotors again. When they warped the first time the fix was to resurface and this was not a good idea. I should have insisted on new rotors.

The Mazda2 is for the car enthusiast of the "B" segment.
I have two types of cars: The sports car I love and the work car I need. It was time for me to replace my need car. so I wanted, cheep, easy to maintain, great mpg, and it had to be A STICK! I looked at the Mazda2, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai accent, Chevy Sonic, and the Honda fit. Let make it REAL easy for you since I drove them all. If you need cargo hauling-- go with the Honda fit. If you want to be under the radar and the best warranty-- go with the Hyundai Accent. If you need bells and whistles- Go with the Ford Fiesta. If you need a compromise of the previous three --- Go with the Chevy Sonic. But if you like a car that acts & feels like a sports car--- Mazda2 hands down!

Delightful Sporty Surprise
This is a year three update and none of my opinions have changed. I've had zero problems. Change the oil and add gas. 30mpg city and 36 hwy. Still fun! . It's been a little over 2 years now since I bought my 2 used. I've been on a few long trips a couple of vacations and a lot of around town. Since the newness has worn off I acknowledge it's not a luxury car, not a sports car, But it is an adequately appointed, very sporty, econo car. This is actually one of the better handling cars I've owned. It's fun, sure footed, and confidence inspiring. The seating position is near perfect for me. A bit of road noise on the hi-way above 70. All of the time it is comfortable. I'm actually happy that this cars competition has more cargo space, gets a few more mpg's and all similar cars have more horsepower. That is exactly what makes this car such a good deal on the used market. I paid thousands less than my wife did for her Honda Fit that was a year older with more miles. An excellent car indeed but this Mazda2 was 2/3 the price and is better in all respects except interior size. The Fit has an ingenious bigger interior.

Back to Driving, a car that's not an appliance
I'm a fan of cars that drive well, and are not complicated. The Mazda2 with its five speed manual, a very smooth shifting manual, fits this bill perfectly. Like the Mazda Miata it is not overpowered but its elegant manual shifter more than compensates, and at highway speeds is both comfortable and secure. We drove from San Francisco to Phoenix to Giants spring training and enjoyed the ride at least as much as we had in larger cars like the VW Passat. It's not a rocket so passing on two lane roads requires judgment (and distance). There were two of us; the back seat is fine for children and comfortable for adults in the Bay Area. It's a hatchback and we could put two suitcases in the "trunk," and of course much more by lowering the back seats. Parking is amazing . . . the car is 144 inches long. There's no touchscreen . . . the things you need get going by buttons, some on the steering wheel. A wonderful car.

Great Little Car
I had been looking at the Mazda2 well before it arrived in the states. Shortly after it arrived, the Chevy Sonic and Kia Rio5 also arrived. After checking out all three vehicles, the Mazda2 blew the competition out of the water. It may not have the biggest engine or most features, but it is most definitely the most fun to drive. While many reviews I read commented on the Mazda2's lack of power, I find it to be more than adequate. I love the driving experience provided by Mazda and am especially pleased to be averaging 30mpg (compared to the 20mpg I got in my old vehicle) and not having to spend nearly as much on gas. It really is a great little car that is definitely worth checking out.
Shhh...don't tell anyone why you REALLY bought it.
$14K out the door (I got a deal!), no options, no infotainment to speak of; just a small Japanese hatchback. Basic transportation. And for that purpose, in and of itself, it was well worth the money to buy. But it's so much more. It's like driving a go-cart to work every day. The steering is spot on, brakes are fantastic, and the handling overall is unbelievable. The seats are sporty and comfortable and the ergonomics are the best I have seen in a long time. Furthermore, no options still means you get keyless entry, windows, locks, and an iPod/MP3 capable sound system. Just an overall good car.
Good solid little car
I got to drive one of these recently and it made me think about this car over the one I actually bought. Being on a tight budget I bought a 2012 Ford Focus, but I never thought about looking at the Mazda 2. I have driven Toyota's Yaris 4-door and it had a noisy ride and a hard feel on the road. The Mazda 2 had a quiet, solid feel inside with lots of space for a six-foot tall driver. The doors closed with a solid thunk. The Mazda 2 was smooth and fast. The Edmunds review here says that the automatic transmission was not adequate. I thought it was. I hit the pedal hard to get it into passing gear and this car was fast. 100hp was very adequate in my opinion. Smooth and fast acceleration.
So Far So Great!
I just got this car used, with 39000 miles on it and the engine fires right up and doesn't miss a beat. I'm loving the gas mileage. I had a small SUV before I bought this car, and this little Mazda has cut my gas bill in half! It's surprisingly zippy and fun to drive. I agree with the other drivers here, that it's not sluggish at all. Even with the a/c or heater running, when I step on the gas, it responds, and I have no trouble getting on the highway. Park it anywhere. Comfy interior. Plenty of room for a tall person up front, not as much leg room in back, but that's not something I'm concerned about.
The "Fun To Drive" Zoom Zoom Economy Car!
What can I say, this car is just surprising! It really gets better the more you drive it. It is rock solid and it's standard Yokohama tires glue it to the road and is especially secure in fast, tight, turns. This coupled with the amazing suspension makes you feel secure and completely in control at all times. Don't believe the video review BS on YouTube about this thing being underpowered. It's not! It's a perfect balance of horsepower to weight ratio logic. Dont take my word for it. Test drive one and your will be surprised! It may not have the best storage or tech goodies but if you want to fall in love with the Fun Factor of driving every day this is the one! It has the fun fun zoom zoom!
Smiley Car, Smiley Driver
I owned a Porsche Boxster and have driven many high end sports cars including the Acura NSX. None of them are as fun as the Mazda 2 5SPD Manual. I bought the car used with low mileage and I use it daily and in autocross. It is a great little race car for autocross events. It makes driving fun. The engine is peppy and feels strong and the car is surprisingly quiet and smooth. With my spirited mixed city/highway driving, I average 29.5 mpg.
Awesome little car!
This car is very fun! When I totaled my Mazda3, I started looking at other cars but nothing came up to snuff like the Mazda. At 100hp per 6k rpm's, it seems like not a lot, and it's not. With a 5M, you can push it a little more and have more control over the car. The interior is excellent in the touring model and does not feel like a tiny car. Road noise is not nearly as loud as I expected. It does well on long trips, getting about 36mi/gallon. I know this is weird to throw in, but this little car handles potholes really well. And unlike one or two reviews I read, it does not "bounce" all over the road. It's very sturdy and handles pretty similarly to my Mazda3 (RIP).
As fun as a go-cart!
The small car segment in America is finally getting competitive, and Mazda does a great job of building a car that is comfortable, efficient, good looking, and (true to the Mazda heritage) fun to drive. I test drove the automatic, and while it is very good as far as four-speeds go, it is still a four speed, so I can only recommend the manual. While on paper the car may seem to weak, get behind the wheel (of the manual) and you'll experience a go-cart like driving sensation that can only be defined as pure bliss. The car is very efficient, and the engaging drive keeps giving me reasons to head out to the store or just to hit the road. Do yourself a favor, buy this car. You won't regret it.
incredibly fun car
this car offers great value, its a great drivers car and very economical. There are no other small cars in this segment which are this engaging to drive.

Best college car
I bought my Mazda 2 in 2014. I needed a vehicle with great gas mileage, a low payment, a way to listen to my music from my phone, and still look pretty snazzy. I came from a totally basic model 2006 Hyundai Tucson that got 19 mpg and transmission problems. The Mazda 2 got 28 mpg (way better than my Tucson!) and all I ever did was change the oil regularly and changed the brakes maybe one time. Mazda makes excellent tires; over the two years with the many long trips I took it on it kept the same ones I bought it with and we're still good when I traded for a new vehicle a few weeks ago due to growing family. Though it was a vehicle MADE TO BE AFFORDABLE, Mazda still made it look like a quality car for the type of vehicle it was made to be. I'm from Mississippi, and everyone knows Mississippi girls like to eat and take up space. THREE friends and I fit COMFORTABLY in the vehicle with all of or luggage in the trunk on three 6 hour trips to the beach. It worked just fine and didn't hinder the trip one bit; actually gave us more spending money due to the great gas mileage and only needed max $15 to fill up. With 28 mpg, and driving a 45 min drive three times a week plus driving to work, I still only needed to fill up once or twice a week depending on what I did on the weekends. The Mazda 2 was a definite upgrade from my previous vehicle. Totally low maintainence. The ride could be Slightly noisy, but the way it drove was so fun that I didn't mind the light noise. Also, you could feel just about every bump you hit, but good grief it was like half a foot off the ground so feeling bumps is to be expected. I enjoyed the size, I didn't feel like I would ram into anybody; parking, backing up, and switching lanes was super super easy. Wish I had this car as a first one honestly. It even had a USB and aux outlet for listening to music, though I really only used the USB so I could charge and listen to music. Siri would talk through the sound system which made navigation from the phone heard. By the way, the sound system was awesome, especially since the one in my Tucson was ruined by previous owner. Due to new baby, I needed a vehicle to accommodate the baby car seat without bringing the front passenger seat so far up (though the Mazda 2 did have what was needed to install a baby car seat just in case and my 5'3 mom could fit comfortably in the front passenger seat with the baby car seat installed). I loved this Mazda so much I traded for a 2013 CX-5 which I'm in love with! The Maxda 2 was extremely wonderful to me and I would recommend it to anyone; MAZDA ALL THE WAY!

Little Nicky 2014 Mazda2 Sport.
Loved this car. Great on gas, climbing hills, only $20.00 to fill it and it lasted us a week. Two minor accidents and we were not hurt at all. I loved this car. Packed it for a week worth of food, clothing etc for vacation. Handles awesome. Not great driving on slush on the highway, but could pass all SUVs going up hills in first gear in a snow storm! I regret trading it in and not keeping in as a second vehicle. Very reliable vehicle. I see where it is for sale now and debating on buying it again. Great sound system for the CD's. Never had any major issues with it.
An OK cheap car to get you from place to place
Ok first off I will state that this car does what I bought it to do. Go from place to place cheaply and helps me stay out of debt. Cheap was the main reason I bought it. I needed something new, reliable, from a respected manufacturer to get me from place to place. The Mazda 2 does this just fine. With that being said here is what I think of the car. I bought the automatic touring model. - Interior. Cheap plastics that scratch easily. Cheap fabric that tears easily. My back seat tore with only 2000 miles on the car. No one uses my back seat except for occasionally my dog. We religiously put a blanket on the back seat whenever he was in the car to minimize dog hair all over it. Still the seat tore. Had it sewn professionally and it tore again along the seam. With that being said it is a good looking interior with black fabric and red piping to spruce it up a bit. Hard to see fuel level indicator. Small gauges on the dash. The layout is fine but the gauges and text on the information system are small and hard to read. Not a lot of room in it. My daughter has both a Mini Cooper Coupe and a Chevy Sonic. Both small cars, like the Mazda 2, but both have tons more room inside. I feel like I am sitting on top of my passenger in the Mazda 2. In order to fit in the car I have to have the seat all the way back, the seat bottom lowered as far as it will go and the seat back reclining far back. In this position I am forced to keep my nose up high to see over the dash. And I am not especially tall (5'7"), but I do get my height from my legs. When I am in the driver's seat there is no leg room at all for any passengers behind me. Cup holders are hidden underneath the optional arm rest I had installed. No back seat cup holders. Little storage. We got the 6 speaker Bose system. Its an ok system. I have heard a lot better. The windows wont defog for the life of me. I have tried every setting on the heat/ac system and the only setting that works in a/c on (even in winter in new england brrr) and full blast fan coming out of the defrost setting only. I had some luck with Rain Dance defogger. - Exterior. The chrome peeled off the Mazda 2 logo in back within weeks of buying the car. Other than that the exterior has held up pretty well. - Mechanics. It has been a reliable running vehicle now for 2+ years and 50,000 miles on it. It always starts in cold new england winters. Maintenance has been cheap and in frequent. Balise Mazda in West Springfield, Ma has been awesome! Now the bad. The brakes! Ugh. The anti lock brake feature comes on way too early. I have had multiple issues stopping in it. I found pumping helps. I brought this up to Mazda service and they cant find anything wrong with them. Today I nearly hit a Jeep in front of me and it wasnt even in hard braking conditions. The anti lock braking comes on at random times. This is not acceptable and is the main reason I am trading the car in. I need braking power. Too many hills and bad road conditions in western Massachusetts to play around with finicky brakes. - Handling. It is easy to drive and handles fine. I taught my teenaged daughter to drive in it. It is way underpowered for driving in a hilly or mountainous region. I have given up on certain freeway on ramps because the car just doesnt have enough power to get up to 65 and merge. Now on to winter driving. Get 4 really good snow tires if you have to drive on snow at all. I had NO control on snow with the stock tires. I have a little better with top of the line snow tires but its still not really good and leaves me driving with sweat covered hands due to nerves. - Overall. If you are looking for something cheap, with fair MPG, and from a reliable maker then the Mazda 2 is a good bet. If you live in a hilly or mountainous area with bad weather then look at something with better handling, heating, power and control.

Great little car
I traded in a 2008 chevy equinox rthis car is an engineering masterpiece the chevy was crap had a chinese engione used a qt of oil between changes this car uses no oil is quiet solid when you have fooor on brake shift in to D or R no clunk like an american cars engine is quiet everything works perfect thee onloy complaint i thin k it need s a bigger engine 1.8 more power if yiou step on hgas too hard it downshifts easily mikleage is good overall 28 have gotten 42 on highway going 65. The mazdas are 96 percdnt made in japan nthey are well made like toyotas in the early 90's .
2012 Sport manual
Bought this car new and have put on 2000 miles so far. Got the Sport because I couldn't find any Touring models with manuals in my area. Excellent handling, I really feel like I can toss this car around. The shifter is very smooth and quick. At first I was worried about the 100hp but while it won't knock you back in your seat during acceleration it is more than adequate(previous car was a 9-3 Saab). Personally I like the simpleness of the car, the dash is basic and for an economy car it's what it should be. I've been averaging 33 mpg with most of my driving at 70 mph on the highway. Basically it is what most of the reviews say, a fun to drive economy car.
The little underdog that comes up big!
Tiny car with plenty of power and comfort. I'm 6.3 and I have enough space to say I'm comfortable. I do wish cruise control was a standard. The engine is very quite even at highway speeds but you will hear noise from the highway. It's handles very well. You do not feel like your in a golf cart. It also holds to road nicely especially if you have appropriate tires installed. Very simple tech but easy to use and works well. Mpg is about average 31-33 combined. Prolly more with manual trans. The auto is smooth and does not care to shift down and move if needed. Nice value as well. No major recalls like the fiesta. Nice little car for the money.

Good car. Wife likes it. Replacement parts
. Wife likes it. Replacement parts are very expensive and hard to fine. I found that the Mazda two is different than all other Mazdas. I have had a couple small breakdowns and finding replacement parts were very difficult and expensive. Such as a simple tire stud was a dealer part only. Also sample CV joints/driveshaft. Dealer part only and they are $800 compared all other cars which a CV joint would cost anywhere between 60 and $120.

Small but Mighty
This is a great little car if you want great gas mileage with very little maintenance cost. It is a hatch back so when you lower the back seats you can put quite a bit of items in the back. The only drawback I have found is it's size because it is small. I loose it in the parking lots because it hides behind larger cars! Great car for someone who wants great gas mileage, space for stuff, easy to drive and comfortable to drive. This is the perfect little bomb.

Absolute blast
I had my Mazda 2 for 6 months now and just love driving it anywhere I can, even with 2 child seats in the back there is ample seating room (as long as there's just kids) back seat is only good for 2 adults at most. The lay out is simple and straight forward which I find appealing over the overly done subcompact cars, though I did install a 8" navi/Bluetooth/DVD screen for around $350 which just makes the car look a little more upmarket, the seats are supportive and comfy but a little to soft for me, and with just enough cargo space. Overall I highly recommend the Mazda 2 for anyone looking for affordable, reliable, and a fun all around car, as long as you get the manual. ZOOM ZOOM

The Little Zoom Zoom
I have now had my 2012 two years and it has 31000 miles. The manual transmission, steering and handling are all very good for a car in this class. I also like having 4 doors on a subcompact hatchback. If you are looking for an inexpensive practical fun car this is it.

This little jellybean is sweet
I know I gave this little one some poor ratings based on the "basic" aspects of the interior and entertainment...but that doesn't account for it's amazing ride, mpg and handling. My biggest complaint is road noise and no technology. I think it's a great car, it just needs comfort, technology, and less road noise. Also the shocks that come stock are very noisy, should improve the quality of those as well as insulation to reduce road noise. Technology should include better sound system, automatic tinting, and available touch screen access.

Worst Car I've ever ownded
I've had this car a little over 6 months and it has been nothing but trouble. My brakes stopped working after 2 months. I'm at 43,000 miles and the Transmission is now having issues and now I have lost $4000.00 on this stupid car. If a salesman tries to talk you into this car, keep walking and get a Toyota Yaris instead.

Fun, practical and affordable transportation
This is not our only vehicle, and we didn't the pay the price of a luxury car. So we need the car to serve our purpose. The Mazda 2 replaces a Tacoma, but we decided that we don't need a truck any more. We found a 2014 MAZDA 2 that had never been titled before. The dealership had used it as a loaner. They added leather seats and tinted glass. Since the car is almost new, we hope to enjoy it for a while.

Makes Getting Groceries Fun!
Sure, 100 hp is not a lot, and it (automatic) can be a little funky with the gear changes. Normally, you may experience a slight latency between hammering your fit down and the engine response. THAT BEING SAID— even in the automatic, you can drive it like a quick manual. Turning off overdrive functions like it's sport mode, giving way WAY more pedal response and increasing the rev limit. Cons: excludes the highest gear, so to really drive the 2 with some spirit on the automatic, be ready to read the engine and switch overdrive off/on depending on the gear. It makes even the auto very involved and really tons of fun. As previously mentioned, the steering responsiveness is so sporty and precise, it made me second guess whether it was electronic or hydraulic. Unlike many modern cars, it isn't *too* soft, and gives you a go-kart-like driving experience. It could use a little more power, but frankly, this obsession with through-the-roof power numbers comes at a loss of the small joys of everyday driving. Where a 500hp mustang can be a blast at the track, this little car can make trips to target or on some local backroads a blast. It grows on you and the more you drive it the more you become infatuated with the experience, the look, the quirks. I have gotten this thing over hills and around corners on some country roads at 80-90mph and it felt like it could do more. Maintenance is cheap and the car rarely complains. I bought mine at 87k miles for 4k, have absolutely thrown it about, driven across the country several times, and even installed a hitch and pulled a small boat for 2000 miles. I have performed every kind of odd test you can imagine, and I can say I would buy it again.
