The car is a beast.
This car is exactly what it was designed to be: a Cadillac killer. It's a rear-wheel drive highway luxo-cruiser, not a BMW M3. Those who complain about this car being unexciting obviously didn't do their homework and should stick to German sports coupes or Miatas. That said, this car's V8 has enough power to rocket from zero-60 in about 6.5 seconds, and the acceleration from 40-80 mph is even more heinous. I can't help but grin like a jackal when I pass people in this beast. And the other 99% of the time you cannot hear the engine! I cannot say enough about this car. The fit and finish is amazing. Even the smallest details are overengineered for wide margins of error and flawlessly done.
none
This is the best car that I have ever owned. I had a 1993 for seven years which was also an exceptional car. The comfort is unmatched, and I have owned several other luxury cars.

LS 400
Nice in all aspects, the body is a head turner. Reliable, will probably last a lifetime with a proper maintenance.
Old now-but great
For those looking for a great older used car, you must consider the LS400 if you value ride, performance, undying style and good looks. Bought it used and kept it 5 years. Only giving it up because it retained such high value and we wanted to get in on a newer certified LS (2004 which has the highest LS rating for the decade). The care didn't age in looks or care requirements between 30K and 88K miles. Hope the next buyer is as continuously satisfied as we were
Excellent Daily Commuter
After 293,000 on still solid 95 Avalon, I bought the only car that I can trust to take me to 400,000+ miles in the next 8 years with the fewest problems, most comfort and best performance. Bought as cream puff at auction, 1 issue. I initially fretted because I had Dunlop sport 4000s and worried about Winter in New England with a 150 mile daily commute and no snow tires. Well, the traction control and VSC complemented the near new tires so well that I never had a problem on the highway and the LS drove like a tank in the city. I'm glad I bought this car instead of the RL,Q45 and 01-04 Avalon. I'm not wishing I had them. Despite what I'd read, the handling's nimble depending on seat position.
255k miles and running strong but I sold it
Best car I ever owned but the check engine light went on. The shop could not give me an accurate price estimate bust said maybe thousands of $$$ so we sold it. This car never used any oil and had no rust (we are in the northeast - winter salt) so really hated to let it go. It always ran like a charm - wish all cars were so reliable. Original post :This is the best car I have ever owned - far superior to Mercedes vehicles I have had in the past. Bought it new and it runs great and still does not burn oil after 242k miles. Spark plugs lasted over 150k miles and first battery lasted 12 +years. The vehicle is rust free after 17 years in the northeast, where they love to salt the roads. Only negative about this car is the traction is not good in snow - otherwise the greatest car I have ever owned. Now up to 255k miles - still runs great and is rust free. Great car !

SUPER RELIABILITY & COMFORT
Bought pre-owned @ 3 yr. old but with only 6800 miles. Have since pumped up to 56k. Now 9 yrs. old and have not put a single penny into it beyond maintenance. Drive is uninspiring around town but a champ on the highway. Cruises with uncanny smoothness. A true luxury ride with exceptional quietness. Blah, grandpa-like exterior (and who designed the ugliest alloy wheels ever?) but interior is attractive and plush. I probably won't but could keep car for another 15 years and it would still be an enjoyable ride. A bit jumpy off the mark. Even if you try to moderate throttle it tends to leap off line. Surprisingly fuel efficient on hwy (up to 28 mph) but premium a must. Mileage suffers otherwise.
Great Value!
The vehicle handles like a dream. It is without a doubt an absolute great value. For a 10 year old car, it looks great! With over 100,000 miles, it remains extremely responsive. The fuel economy is awesome. I have gotten up to 30 mpg on the highway. This is the second Lexus I have owned. They are, without a doubt the best vehicles made.
Best of the century
If you are looking for comfort, durability, high performance in terms of speed, miles per gallon, power, and low maintenance; look no further than the Lexus LS400. You would be amazed at the power generated from this car; it leaves many of the newer cars on the road at the slightest press on the accelerator. Transmission shift is so smooth you would never realized when it changed from on gear to another. The technology on-board is almost on par with newer cars. It alerts me when either of head or tail lights are blown. The seat belts at the front are adjustable, the front seats are heated and they are also adjustable to suit most drivers. The AC unit works efficiently without any significant loss of power on the engine. The shock absorbers and other suspension parts last almost a life-time compared to other cars. Maintenance cost is less than $300 per year if you drive approximately of 15,000 miles per year. The original battery lasts for 10 years. There are many luxury items in this vehicle such as the interior lighting for front and rear passengers, outlets on the rear doors to charge cellphones or provide power to gadgets, computers, tablets, and so forth. There is a lock under the steering wheel that locks the booth (trunk), you can also deactivate or activate the sound when locking the doors from the remote. If your windows are all up and you press and hold the "open door" symbol on the remote you will notice that all the window go down and the moonroof slides back. This feature is useful on very hot days to let out the heat accumulated before you enter the car. Alternatively, you can install a remote- start device that also puts on the AC. There are other features on this car that could be activated by Lexus. If your battery is dead and you attempt to open this car without following the right procedure, the computer becomes immobilized. That's a safety/security feature which I will not explain here just in case car thieves are reading. You have to apply a few steps to get reboot the computer. Even if you replace a new battery and try to start the car, it will not start not will you see any light on the dashboard. Everything shuts down. You would be amazed at the space inside this car, especially if you are travelling with large suitcases. I've installed a Pioneer AVIC 8100 double-din radio my 1998 LEXUS LS400 so I am able to speak commands using my smartphone with the Google. I also get to mirror my cellphone screen on the screen of my Pioneer unit so that allows me a bigger view of maps, messages, YouTube videos, etc. I do not have to hold my phone while driving; it only needs to be in the car and I can speak my messages, the unit will ask whether I wish to send it or review it. When someone sends me a message, the unit notifies me, reads the message, and asks whether I wish to reply.....this is without me having to touch or look my cellphone and the screen on the unit; so I am able to focus on the road. The unit also has a back up camera so I am able to see what's behind me when I am about to reverse. I also installed backup sensors so if I am too close to an object behind me, the unit would beep. So you could upgrade your LS400 to include all or most of the features of the newer cars. My next addition will be the blind spot device which would notify me whether it is safe for me to change lane without me having to turn my head to the left or the right while driving.

24 years and looking like new!
I can’t separate from this beauty! We have owned a 1999 LS400 since 2011 and today, March 2023, after 12 years of driving this car, I find myself wondering how am I ever gonna be able to replace this beauty? We have taken very good care over the years and got back every bit we gave her in terms of satisfaction. It drives like a dream, smoothly advancing through States without you ever getting tired of being behind the wheel. In fact the more you drive this car, the more you want to do it. 24 years and not feeling them, it’s amazing for any car.

The Best
I bought the Platinum Lexus LS400 in October of 2001 used. It had 13000+ miles on it. Great power and ride. Fun to drive and best of all my wife thanks me often for buying this car. She does not care for autos in general but knows quality when she sees it!! Great car!!!
Lexus LS400
Every time I drive the LS400 I enjoy it more, it drives like a dream. The exterior and interior are designed nicely.
There's Nothing More I can Ask For
This LS400 was actually my wife's car but sometimes we swap with my GS400. Both cars were fully loaded but the best feature that I enjoy most is the Nakamichi sound system. The safety features are the best in the industry and the reability and the built quality I can say, OUTSTANDING so far. Gas mileage in the LS is much better than the GS (both has the same engine; 300 hp for the GS/290 hp for the LS) The comfort and the pampering in the LS400 is beyond comparedriven BMW7series. Personally, I like the Lexus LS400 ride better, extremely quiet, vibration free, and of course it has an excellent reliability records.
Best car I’ve owned !!! 100+ cars in my history.
I’ve owned every other car you can name...all the German, other Japanese & American brands x 10...Most brand new or slightly pre owned cars. Sadly, this is my 1st Lexus & is now the only brand I will ever buy !!! It is 2019...I bought a 1998 (21 year old) LS400 with 135k on the clock as my New Daily Driver. I am impressed beyond words in every category you can think of...performance, fit & finish, quality, quietness, fuel economy...etc...etc...etc. This car was over engineered & still feels brand new with 135k on the clock.
LS 400
Awesome car, smooth, great gas mileage, no problem and I own a 95 model too.
Lexus is the best
I bought this car for my wife. However, I love driving it when I can. I owned Volvos and Mercedes before, and there is no comparison. The Lexus is far superior to both, especially in the dependability area. We will drive this car for 10 years. No problems at all. We bought it with 40K, it now has 95K. Great car.
What more could a fellow ask?
This is the third of four Lexus vehicles I've owned since 1991 and the second LS. "Buy a really good car and maintain it," an old friend advised me many years ago. Well, this is a really good car that requires very little maintenance (aside from the regularly scheduled kind). A battery, tires and a tail light about cover it.
Best value in a sedan
This is a third update of my used car experience she has 158,000 miles on her now and still runs like when I bought it other than normal wear out service items and a Intermittent problem with the power tilt wheel not going down; this happens a couple times a year it won't work then comes back to life as if nothing happened. I am very pleased with the car. If you can find a good one you will be very happy ,safe and comfortable I have driven it a 1000 miles over 2 days and still feel comfortable with no road fatigue with this one on your body. Do yourself a favor service at qualified independent shop and save 40-60% off Lexus franchise dealer prices I do !
excellance
I just love the ride of this Platinum LS 400. I have had 7 Lexus and this one rides the best - even better than the 2002LS400 Ultra.
Beautiful, Excellent and Boring
I bought preowned in 2005 with 65,000 miles on it. The car is beautiful in every way. I since put 13000 mile on it and I must confess that this is an excellent car. Not even one minor problem to date. Interior comfort and appointments are outstanding in layout and function. Seats are roomy and can be easily adjusted to you favorite comfort position. Leg room is enough for the 6+ footer in front or rear seats. Build quality is also outstanding. The cabin is not as quiet as I had hoped and heard, with noticeable road noise, especially on concrete highway surfaces. The car drives so well though, it is almost boring to drive. Heavy front-end pushes.
Very Happy!
I absolutely fell in love with this vehicle on the test drive! It has the perfect balance of power and comfort. If you need to pass someone you can do it as easy as the wind blows, and when you want to cruise along comfortably, this car will make you feel like your hovering on air. The interior as well as the exterior are absolutely timeless in design, the car turns heads! If you can find a deal on one, GET IT!
Over hyped
Am finding this vehicle transmits road noise into the cabin (not a quite or particular smooth ride). Ride is so/so and not as good as the Rivera we owned before we bought this car. Handling is ok not stellar. Transmision is the best and smoothest I have ever driven. Engine is great. Would not purchase another Lexus as I feel that they are not worth the $ for a pre-owned. The certified pre-owned is not worth the extra $ either.
Happy with our Lexus
I bought this car off lease with 40K trading a 91 300D Mercedes. The overall build quality is better than the MB. The V8 is excellent and fast. Also good economy. This car is exceptional in every way. Will buy another. We now have 100k on the car and it is as good as the day we bought it. Very reliable with no problems at all.
I LOVE LEXUS!
This is the second Lexus I have owned, and this car was a great deal with low mileage! I did my research and found a beautiful one with low miles! I love driving this car, it has power, plush luxurious comfort, and excellent reliability! All in a beautiful sleek package! I will always love the Lexus brand!
Perfect Crusier for Marketing
This car rides and drives like a dream it was supposed to be, a 2nd car to keep the miles down on my lease vehicle a 2007 Murano Suv. I find however it is so comfortable I am driving this a lot. Power and performance, it handles very well for a large sedan. An excellent value, you can now buy one of these for less than a new Toyota Yaris. Reliabilty is the best do normal maintance and it will last 500k miles !
Expected more
I did not expect to have to have a valve adjustment done at 70,000 miles that cost $850. Nor did I expect climate control and steering components, as well a clock to stop functioning. I had none of these problems with our Camry.
A very satisfied customer
This is my 4th Lexus LS400 over the last 9 years and the best ever. I have now purchased my wife's first, GS300 and she loves it. By the way, over all these years the only thing which was a problem was the cigarett lighted didn,t work but while having it serviced, the service folks replaced it and said thanks for bring it to our attention. By the way, it was a non because neither of us smoke anyway.
Best Car Ever
I've driven many cars over the years and this Lexus is by far the best. My previous was a Toyota Celica Convertible, which was also as reliable, but after 12 years I wanted more comfort. I found it!
rating
Best car ever owned
175k miles and never in the shop!
My wife wanted a luxury car so we did the Mercedes/BMW/Jaguar deal. I was most concerned about reliability since we were looking at $60k or more so I pushed for the Lexus and I am glad that I did. I have owned tons of cars and by far this is the best when you consider everything. I have since purchased 2 other older Ls 400's for our two sons and they have been wonderful as well. You can't beat this car for reliability as my 175k never in the shop miles prove. I just change the oil.
Great, But Not Exciting
This is an excellent car. The LS 400 is all a luxury car should be. It's quiet, comfortable and powerful. The fit and finish is unmatched. I'm still amazed with the car power and acceleration, yet how quiet it is at all speeds. The tranny shifts so smoothly you can barely feel it. Great gas mileage for car size @ 18/25 city and highway. The car is so good to ride and drive, it's almost boring.
Excellence Continues
This is the third Lexus (of four) I've bought since 1991. The two LS, one each SC and RX have each been tops in reliability, luxury and overall quality. An old friend advised me long ago that the only way to beat the high cost of automobile ownership is to buy a really good car and maintain it forever. Maybe "forever" is a stretch, but the philosophy really pays off with these cars.
Great Marketing Car, Comfort and Quiet
Took this car out for a 1 hour test drive to make sure I would like it. This car performs like a sports car but is way more comfortable and is so quiet it makes cell phone calls sound like your in your office. For the price I paid this was a deal it will last up to 400k miles with proper care. Lexus makes cars that last, so buy one and you will make a good investment !
