2021 Sorento X line serious problems

JP, 05/25/2021
2021 Kia Sorento SX Prestige X-Line 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl Turbo 8AM)

I only have 2200 miles and my blind spot monitoring system went out and 3 days or so later the transmission failed...wouldn't switch to second gear without redlining. Engine light and service message came on and now it's been sitting in the Kia dealership lot for weeks because they are so backed up...stay far away from the 2021 Sorento.

I bought my 2022 Sorento prestige a little over a month ago. Honestly one of the best decisions I’ve ever made! This suv has plenty of room, very sleek and amazing features. When driving, it’s like the car isn’t even on because of how quiet it is! I love that it has heated and cooled seats, gas mileage is great. It honestly has the quality you would expect from your high end car brands. I couldn’t be happier with my choice!

My Kia Sorento S is a LEMON!!

Walterst, 07/12/2021
2021 Kia Sorento S 4dr SUV (2.5L 4cyl 8A)
104 of 110 people found this review helpful

Long story short…..DON’T BUY A KIA!!! I bought my brand new 2021 Kia Sorento S on May 1st. Not even a week after buying it, the brakes have been non stop squealing every time I brake. I took it in to have them look at it, the tech said he found nothing wrong with it, didn’t hear anything and lubed the brakes and they sent me on my way. Didn’t even get down the road and heard the same squealing as soon as I left the lot. I immediately called them back and was scheduled another week out. A different tech looked at it and said that my car had 2 defective leaking front brake calipers (on a brand new car). They scheduled to have it serviced and they were both supposedly “replaced” only to drive it the next day to hear squealing once again. I called to let them know about the issue and they couldn’t even get me in for another 2 weeks just to look at it again…..I brought it in, they now say the back brakes are overheating for some reason and they don’t know why. So they said they were going to replace the brake pads and rotors. Well, this morning I go to start my car up with push to start, it acted like it didn’t want to start and hesitated….I think to myself “maybe that was just a one time thing”. Well as I drop my son off at daycare and begin my drive to work through Delaware, I notice the transmission is not wanting to shift and will not go into 3rd gear. If it does, it will jerk really hard and then rev up again. I get further down the road and it is very slow to accelerate and will not let me go past 40mph. You better believe after all the issues with the brakes I DROVE THAT CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND TOLD THEM TO KEEP IT! I already have a case open with Kia consumer affairs and I’m in the process of requesting a buyback. As a mother and work a full time job I do not have the time to keep bringing a new car in to be serviced every week! When you buy a new car, you expect to not have these very issues! I have tried to be very patient and understanding but at this point I am just frustrated!!! Will never buy another Kia.

2021 Kia Sorento is Nice, BUT a sour Lemon

I traded my 2019 Kia Optima Sport in for a 2021 Kia Sorento SX X-Line Prestige AWD on 1/1/2021. 2 weeks ago tomorrow will make 2 weeks that my truck is in the shop. Walked outside one morning on my way to work. Started my truck up like normal and put it in drive. It wouldn't move. Put it in reverse. It wouldn't move. After about 15 minutes, it started driving. I work out of town and depend on my vehicle. Took it to the shop, they dropped me off at work. They wouldn't even give me a loaner because they said they were out of then. I reserved a rental. Long story short, I ended up having to purchase a second vehicle because it didn't make sense to continue to pay put of pocket for a rental. But 13 days later, they say they need to replace a pump and if that doesn't work, then they will replace my transmission. On a 2021 Nice SUV that WASN'T CHEAP!??? Make it make sense! I loved Kia and I still think they're nice vehicles, but this will be my LAST Kia I purchase. The new Sorento's are nice, but please wait a few years before you buy this vehicle. From reading other reviews as of today, this body style has too many transmission issues. 12/25/21 update----My original post was above. It has been an ongoing mess with Kia motors company and a nightmare. To summarize and make a long story short, Kia originally had my truck in the shop literally for 4.5 months. I had to purchase a second vehicle because they didn't have any loaner vehicles. The replaced three transmissions while it was in the shop. I dealership could only do what they could, but I am really disgusted with the corporate office. They are so unprofessional and un-empathetic. I had to get the Attorney General office involved. When they "finally" said I could do the buy back option, that was Sept 9th when I completed and faxed back and confirmed they got my paperwork. They told me 60 days for buy back. Well....Danielle G, the escalated case manager who was working my case didn't get it turned in til the end of the month and told me the buy back would take place by end of November. I feel like she kept blowing smoke up me because she would give me the run around---ALL the time and that's when she answered the phone for me. Danielle G wouldn't answer or return my calls. I called her one day from my office phone (different area code) and SHE ANSWERED! I was so pissed. I nicely told I called from my personal number and she wouldn't answer, but when I call from a different area code, she's answers and SHE LAUGHED! I told her how unprofessional that was and she apologized. But as far as the truck, I ended up getting it back 4.5 months later...drove it for 2 weeks and it cut off on me. Got it to the dealership and they had it for another week. They called me to pick it up. I asked them what was wrong with it? They said that it wasn't throwing any codes that they needed to fix, so they reset the check engine light. Excuse me? You reset the check engine light because you couldn't figure out why it cut off? I told them to keep the truck until the buy back was over. I'm done with Kia. Actually, the dealership were the nice people out of this, but Kia motors corporate ain't worth a penny. I feel bad for other people who spend their hard earned money on this beautiful truck and once that transmission goes out, it's a done deal. The 3rd party company called Morley emailed me this week. I'm just awaiting the surrender date to give them my part of the buy back money and so I can be done with these folks. I know this may not make sense, but---as long as you don't need Kia's services other than routine maintenance, you'll probably be okay. But let something mess up and you'll be screwed. PLEASE SAVE YOURSELF AND JUST LEAVE KIA ALONE! I brought this $50k truck January 1st 2021 and it has been in the shop for over half the time that I've had it.

Got the model S 2021, it's a nice looking SUV, nice leather seats and spacious, the moonroof is great. Also good mileage. But, and this is a big one, the SUV is new and already had check engine light issues twice, the safety system shout down on my completely yesterday, lights turn on by themselves, the seat heating turns on by itself. The thing is going bananas. Why would I have to be struggling like that with a car I just got 3 weeks ago? it's super annoying and now I regret buying it.

I was looking forward to this new model. Purchased the X-Line and enjoyed the car for a couple months. At 2700 miles (3 months of ownership) the transmission went out. Like others - the vehicle is on week 5 of sitting at the dealer waiting for parts to arrive so that the transmission can be fixed. Very disappointed.

I traded in my Audi for the 2021 Kia Sorento SX in January of 2021. I was so impressed with this car when I first got it. Fast foward to July 5 2021, I turn my vehicle on to drive home and the check engine light comes on, at first I think maybe it is just a fluke...It was downpouring that night so I thought something might have triggered it. I go to drive and I notice as I am trying to accelerate my RPMs are going up but the speed is really not increasing, until it JOLTS me forward. I finally make it home and hope it was just a random event. The next day same thing happens, check engine light is on, notification comes up on my screen "possible transmission control issue" same thing happens, car is not accelerating, RPMs going up, and if I stop at a red light and the "auto on off" kicks in the car totally dies. When I am finally able to get into Kia the next day they tell me I need a new transmission.......a NEW TRANSMISSION on a brand new vehicle with only 5000 miles on it!!!!! It has now been sitting at the Kia dealership for 26 days and they have no ETA on when the new part will arrive. Stay far far away from this car!! It looks beautiful, but it is a lemon !!! I will be submitting paperwork for it to be taken in as a lemon law and get a refund to get something else, NOT A KIA !!!!!

Second Sorrento and we love it

Graeme Robinson, 12/20/2020

Love our new 2021 Sorrento - the interior in our top spec model puts the competition - and many so called prestige brands - to shame. The 2.5 turbo 4 is way punchier than the V6 in the prior model and the DCT transmission shifts almost imperceptibly - I’ve not experienced any of the low speed lurching reported by some reviewers. My wife loves the size of the Sorrento and for our family of four, it’s near perfectly proportioned - we only occasionally use the third row seats, but they are handy when we do need them and roomy enough for kids and smaller adults. The second row captains chairs makes access easier than the prior model too. Only a couple of criticisms: the ride is better than the prior model, but probably still not class leading for comfort - some might find it too firm. Also, Kia made some strange equipment omissions on US cars - even on this top of the line model - most notably no memory seats and no heated rear seats.

TRANSMISSION BLOWN

I bought this vehicle with 2400 miles on it. It was dealer demo, after putting 400 miles on the vehicle it started sputtering and engine light came on. Took it to dealership the code on the app could not be found. Mechanic told us that it was probably from forcing gas during pumping rounding to nearest dollar because this accrued shortly after getting gas. Then at 3800 miles was passing a car in sport mode vehicle redlined during passing. When I stepped on the brake it finally came down. Two days after that incident the car hadn’t been driven my husband went out and the car car would start but wouldn’t go into gear. Towed to Kia, transmission is being replaced with a new one. I noticed there were two other reviews same line of Kia vehicle, I’m wondering if this is an issue with this line and just not a lot of people have posted. Plus I also wonder if that dealer knew there was something wrong with that transmission and sold it anyways.

Bought a 2021 SX Prestige X Line 2 months ago now has less than 2000 miles on it. Already had a black chrome trim piece replaces by the rear drivers window and now we notice a square Inprint on the passenger side dashboard. We're told it's the airbag location. Looks terrible. Dealer sent pictures to manufacturer to see what it is and how to correct it.

Upgrade yet Downgrade

I just purchased my 2021 Kia Sorento SX Prestige X-Line Christmas Eve. The ride is smooth and the horsepower is excellent! However, compared to my previous vehicle (a 2016 Kia Sorento SXL 2.0 Turbo), I can’t help but feel that in a way, I downgraded at the same time I upgraded. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy my 2021 Sorento. It’s great. It’s just that my 16’ Sorento had features the 21’ model lacks like driver memory seats, heated rear seats, and rear window shades. Granted I’d be primarily driving the vehicle but I like my passengers to be comfortable as well. When I had seen pictures of the 21’ Sorento when it debuted, I thought that at the very least we’d get the ambient interior lighting. Unfortunately, that’s apparently been reserved for markets outside the U.S. To me, some of those features are strange omissions for a vehicle that’s supposedly the high tier trim at about 43k. I understand that those kind of features are saved for Kia’s bread-and-butter Telluride, but not everyone wants a car that big nor are willing to spend 52k plus. Aside from that though, I’ve got no complaints about my Sorento. I still have the panoramic sunroof and additionally, lots of technological features that were absent on my older Sorento. My SX Prestige is truly spoiling me!

Can't compete with our 2012 Town and Country

Got talked into buying the 2021 Sorento Hybrid. Front seats are not as comfortable as our 2012 T&C, rides and drives the same, actually maybe not quite as good. Not naming the dealer, but bought new in Wichita, Ks....they acted like they were going way overboard to allow us 5500 on our T&C, then we see them advertise it for $10990! Was in fantastic shape, only needed detailed. Disappointed in no spare, and thought the mileage would be better being a hybrid. Also the sound system doesn't even compete with the T&C. Live and learn I guess.

I was very excited when this model came out. We purchased the X-Line and loved the car until it hit 2700 miles (3 months of ownership). Car started red-lining from a stop and wouldn’t shift into 2nd gear. The engine light came on and then the car wouldn’t move when shifted into any gear. Had it towed to the dealer. Transmission went out. Like others - the vehicle is on week 5 of sitting at the dealer waiting for parts to come in so that the transmission can be fixed. Very disappointed. The “stuff” on the car is very nice but seems like the reliability of the X-Line is questionable.

I bought new 2021 SX AWD and I'm baffled at how technologically advanced this car is. The infotainment screen is gorgeous and crisp, very welcome from other clunky systems I've owned. I have four pre-teen/teenagers and they can all get in the car comfortably, albeit the 3rd row isn't as big as the Telluride. We have a big SUV, so this was for when it's just me to five of us vice all six for long haul rides. One thing this SUV does is drive smooth as heck, just like a nice sedan. There is no boat feeling at all and it turns quite tightly for a SUV. There is barely trunk space, but the second row button to move seats forward enables the kids to pile in quickly. Some storage under a lift in the 'trunk' area offers a place to put things you need in the car always but want to use trunk for other stuff that goes in-and-out. Sorry, no negatives from me. Stunning vehicle!

Engine Blown at 3600 miles

Purchased an SX Prestige with 2.5 Turbo at 2100 miles that was a dealer demo. Drove the Sorento for two weeks adding about 1500 miles or so. As I pull in my driveway the engine began rattling really loud. No warning lights came on. Had the vehicle towed to the dealer I purchased from. Was told that the engine bearings failed, causing internal damage . Also there was metal inside of Turbo itself. Was told I was getting a new, updated engine and turbo. New engine has been installed.. just waiting on a new turbo. I’ve been without my vehicle for 12 days now. Very disappointed in KIA. I opened a case with Kia Consumer Assistance requesting a buyback… we’ll see how this goes.

Must order All Wheel Drive! Check out the reviews on Your Tube - too much torque for just front wheel drive. The AWD is awesome and a must have. I've owned it for about 8 weeks(1500 miles) and had a wind noise on the passenger side which was corrected with a new door seal. Fun to drive and the various drive settings make it even more comfortable or sporty depending on my mood. Must say for a top of the line X Drive it is missing the HomeLink garage door opener and the seat adjustment with coordinated mirror adjustment - they are my only disappointments. The baseball glove leather and green exterior is eye catching. MESSAGE TO KIA _ You definitely upped the brand (I also own a Telluride SX) now you have to up the BUYING and SERVICE experience. I feel like I bought Mercedes quality with the buying and service experience of a Yugo dealership. Lots of room for improvement to bring the brand up further.

Apple car play works sometimes. Cuts in and out. Drivers lumbar pillow is installed crooked in seat. It is too far left, therefore uncomfortable. I hope they can move lumbar into middle of seat. Seats are very flat. Headrest is too far forward making your head in a protrusion position. Will never use back seats. Good clearance with off-road tires on x line model. Sometimes gets stuck in 2nd gear. Quiet engine. I hope Kia can take a look at my seat very uncomfortable. UPDATE: Transmission failed and almost had accident. Not a safe car. 23,000 kms. Said it will take 6 months to fix. Gave me small car to drive in meantime. Dash is warped from sun. Info center doesn't work half the time. LEMON. Kia Canada is not interested in helping you.

We’ve had our SX Prestige for about a year now, and we loved it. Sporty, unique styling, fun to drive, plenty of power and all the bells and whistles, all of which worked very well. And then, at 18k miles, the transmission essentially quit on us. Had it towed, they reprogrammed the control module and sent us on our way. Two days later, same thing happened, except this time there was a burning smell coming from the front of the vehicle. Had it towed back in, and now there’s a case open with Kia about it. We’re not optimistic, based on reviews here and elsewhere. The only other issue is the quality of the interior materials. After about 2k miles, the door panels started rattling and creaking. Probably due to it being the first year of the redesigned model, but nonetheless, we paid a good chunk of money for what we hoped would be a quality vehicle, but it turned out otherwise.

I had a brand new Sorento X-Line Prestige with only 6k miles and it left me without power in the middle of the road. After the dealer visit where and they updated the software, every morning the check engine light was on. I took it again 4 times to the dealer in two weeks. They told me that they may request a transmission replacement. Thank god it was leased and I was able to get a Stinger which is made in Korea and has a different setting. Summary: After reading all reviews and blogs, the reliability of the DCT transmission is terrible in Kias and Hyundais. Also, this model is built here in the USA and the quality is not the same as in Korea. I had other Kias in the past including stingers and I did not have any problems. Be aware of new models in the first year! If you think about an SUV Kia is better a Telluride or a Sportage.

Kia Sorento Prestige X-Line SX Prestige LEMON!!

ShellD, 01/13/2024

17 of 19 people found this review helpful

I ordered my Sorento got it in October 2022. I loved the features and how it drove. Next day I went to drive it to work and noticed there were oil drips. I called Kia and said I needed to make an appointment and they said not to worry it was probably just because the car was new and to give it a week or so to burn off the coating. To make a long story short the car leaked oil from day one. It has been in to find the leak for over a year! Each time promising me that the leak was fixed only to have to return because it wasn’t fixed! So after a year of taking it in and I kept complaining that it wasn’t fixed. They found the leak it was the rear seal. So I took it in for them to fix the seal. After two days at the dealership they called to tell me they found another leak coming from the transmission!! So now it’s still in the shop and they won’t give me a new car instead a new transmission but don’t know when it will come in. What a joke! Find another dealer and DO NOT BUY A KIA!!

My favorite feature is the advanced cruise, super convenient. The only problem I had was wheel alignment which was very slightly angled. the dealership told me no issue. I had to adjust it with my own. It was nothing to me because I had an experience with my previous Jetta. Now I feel everything perfect. Gas mileage real better than other 3 row vehicles. .

My 2021 Kia Sorento with 10,000 miles is back at the dealer for service for the second time for the same issue: engine light comes on, car is sluggish to accelerate or go into gear. First time in they said it was a misfire but they couldn't repeat it and sent me home. Two weeks later same issue. This time, after a week, they tell me they think its a fuel line issue and have to order a part. A week later now they tell me the part is on back order and it won't be here for another month. Yes, they gave me a loaner but the car is not the equivalent to my Sorento. I should be happy right, not good enough...I'm leaving for vacation on an 8 hour drive with 4 family members with a small 4 door sedan. Dealership tells me they have 26 loaners and all are out. Not saying much for Kia cars. Opened a ticket with Kia Corporate who says they will not reimburse for an equivalent vehicle only a Kia SUV at $44/day. Where do you find an SUV for $44/day? Seriously! NOT GOOD KIA!!

So far I love everything about my Sorento, so many bells and whistles I have yet to explore! I love how it handles and rides so smooth and quiet. It feels very safe, spacious and comfortable. Definitely feels like a high end car should, but at an average affordable price.

I bought the car brand new and in 9-months have already had to replace the transmission and the air conditioning system. To make matters worse Kia didn't even give me a new transmission they gave me a refurbished one. I will NEVER buy another Kia and will go back to Honda. The car looks beautiful and three rows is great but mechanically it is a total piece of junk.

I bought my first Sorento (SX) in 2012. A few weeks ago, with180,000 miles and still going strong, I gave it to my son-in-law. After leasing a 2021 Seltos, I realized it just didn't provide the family comfort needed for long road travel. So back to Kia I went...and I ended up with my Grey Wolf Kia Sorento S. It is absolutely stunning to look at, and the feel of it is wonderfully comfortable. The technology is, in my view some of the best I have enjoyed over the years of renting cars while traveling. And it has perks that the Lexus GX 460 doesn't have (not that I am comparing). Bottom line.... I love, love, love it. I find reasons to get in it and drive. As noted, I'm a bit older than most, but at this moment...I am a Kia Kid :)!!!

Still havent fixed engine problems

We've have had two sorentos ... 2018 sorento needed new engine after 60000 miles. Made mistake hoping that they remedied these issues and traded in for 2021 sorento, which is now at dealer and needs new transmission after 15000 miles and less than a year. They do not know when will be fixed, dealer has no loaners, dealer pays for base rental, not comparable vehicle. KIA Corporate said that dealer was giving me a good deal as warranty doesnt cover car rental. kia says they MIGHT reimburse my monthly car payment that i still have to pay. Do youself a favor, stay away ... they look nice but are unreliable. Do your research, rely on information from independent reviewers, most sites i believe are BS and receive some kind of kickback for pushing traffic to kia. Several youtube contributors identify kia engines to have terrible reliability, there are class action lawsuits out there and these are not new dating way back to 2010 models. So seems they dont fix or lean from their mistakes. Spread the word

Loved the new Sorento. This is my 4th. Problem I’m having and Kia says it’s not covered under warranty is that the trim around the windows is peeling and flaking. 2400 miles on it and it looks horrible. They said the “environment” is causing it. Not covered under warranty. Will never buy a Kia again!!!

Love the was it drives and it is very roomy inside compared to my Murano. The two things I wish the car had is a head up display and homelink. So far a great experience.

I read all negative reviews and don't understand what's going on. I have my Kia Sorento S model since last year of December 2020. Have absolutely no issues except for some small, minor complaints like side windows not folding automatically and no automatic tallgate operating function. Beside all of this, this is a great car with the beautiful design and all inonovated technologies. I definitely recomend this car for consideration.

Great handling, abit noisy with cross contact lx continental tires. Hesitates abit in eco mode, not in sport. Sometimes auto shutoff is the reason for sluggish takeoff. Disappointment it that tires are worn out a 47000 km. Seat not the most comfortable for long trips. Very expensive general maintenance items. $2700 can. for a windshield. $2500 per headlamp. Brakes approx $1600. All required in the first 100,000 km.

Bought my 2021 Sorento S a few months ago and so far I like the car overall, I had 2019 Sportage before this. The issues I have are with the phone and ipod, when ever I make a handsfree call I have to be connected to android auto ( this was not the case in the Sportage you could just be on Bluetooth) So I am connected to android auto and every call is scratchy and almost sound like the speaker is blown ? It is hard to even stay on the call because it is so loud. I took it to the dealership and they said it is a known issue with Kia, and there suggestion is to move the phone around different places in the car or try a different phone ? really?? are you going to buy me a new phone ? Second issue is that in my old Sportage I could have my ipod plugged in and all the of the playlists and artists and songs would come up on the screen in the car and you could change everything from there. With this Sorento that doesn't work at all you have to pick up the ipod and make all the changes from there. That is a huge step backwards, they are supposed to be making cars more hands free and instead now it is more dangerous. I almost wish I had my Sportage back. The electronics is a big issue for me, I know some people may not care as much but if it is important to you try the phone and iPod before you buy this car. Now Feb 2022 and they still can not get the Bluetooth or Android Auto to make a clear phone call it is all scratchy and sounds like the speakers are blown, they say it is a known issue and being worked on. If something were to happen to this car I would not buy another Sorrento unless they really re-work this jinky radio set up. UPDATE: I have had my 21 Sorento since June of 21 and every time you make or receive a call on either Bluetooth or Android auto the calls are so scratchy you can hardly hear the caller. Kia has done updates to the software and just last week finally replaced the whole radio ( $4000.00 they paid not me ) and it is just as bad if not worse than before. They tell me there there is nothing else they can do- I had 2 Kia Sporatges before this and they had great systems but this one is crap, I had a Chevy Trax that had a better system than this- If the radio and functionality of the entertainment system are important to you then do not buy this car. Update Oct 2023 - Bluetooth calls still SUCK in this car. Update May 2024- Bluetooth calls still SUCK in this car !!!!

Owned this about 3 months. Beautiful interior. Plenty of power with turbo. Drives like a car. Purchased because of captain chairs and wood grain interior. Does not have homelink rear mirror. missing seat selector and the display on the windshield. No heated rear seats. What gives my Hyundai 2019 Santa Fe had those features. Very stylish exterior. Get compliments on it all the time. Rarely use 3rd row but nice to have if needed. 3 rd row for small kids though.

The first month of owning the car April, 2021 my car stalled and turned off while on the highway. Took it in and “no issues popped up on the diagnostic test.” It was fun to drive but after 10,000 miles the transmission started to kick and make clunky noises. Again I took it into KIA and they again told me no issues were reported in diagnostics and the mechanic didn’t feel any issues when driving it. The sunroof is beautiful and let’s in an amazing breeze but gets moody if it wants to close or not. Again, KIA found no issues. It’s a beautiful car but for reliability, comfort, and space, this car lacks. Choose another car. I’m already trading mine in after only owning it for 16 months.

Such a good looking suv. I want to love it and I did, but my abs grinds when I break going over a bump and it just sounds and feel like it's grinding which I hate. My dealership service is awful. And my center console has been a pain in the ass. It constantly opens when driving. So I have to close it and it pops right back open. So it's irritating. It's been replaced. Didn't help. Got a new lid. Didn't help. Now they need another part. It's made my car alarm go off due to movement inside the vehicle. It likes to lose traction going over the railroad tracks or a turn. I wanted this kia but I wish I would have reviewed the service department before purchasing. My last service department cared so much and communicated and offered so many amenities.

Bought the new Sorento SX XLine. Was able to drive it for a Day. Second Day all the safety equipment including the Blind Spot quit working. Dash is lite up like a X-Mas tree. The ABS light is on as well and when you Apply the brakes to stop they vibrate really hard and sounds like the engine is going to fall out through the dash. Would not recommend this car to anyone.
