2008 CRD (3.0L DOHC Turbo Diesel 3L wGDE Hot Tune)
Bought used with 120K miles - was very well maintained - eventually had a fuel line leak and a power steering pump leak plus glow plug replacement and some little things that added up to a pretty large bill - the truck has been reliable and trouble free since these repairs - I put SRT front and rear stabilizer bars on it and it handles surprisingly well for a tall 4800 lb. SUV - it is a ball to drive and still gets 22 MPG overall and 20 MPG towing a 3,200 lb. camper at 70 MPH with the cruise and A/C on - the GDE tune makes about 470+ lb.ft. of torque (about 50 more than the SRT version) at 1800 RPM so acceleration is effortless - it leaves 5.7L Hemi's behind in traffic - the rear seat legroom is about the same as my wife's Chevy Cruz so it's on the small side - it is about 600 lbs. lighter than the 2020 Grand Cherokee and feels much more nimble - it is rated at 7200 lbs. towing capacity (as is the 5.7L Hemi) - most similar size SUVs are in the 3,500 -4,500 lb. range - it has trailer stability software (standard on the 2008 Limited) and is just as stable towing my 3200 lb. camper as my full size Chevy van with a 5.7L - it has nice amenities (adj. pedals, 110 Volt plug port, heated front & rear seats, thick leather steering wheel with controls for IP and audio system) and the interior is light and airy with nice looking (fake) wood trim and light/dark tones - the seats are all day comfortable - it has a very comfortable highway ride and is extremely capable in winter weather (4 WD) - its off road capability exceeds that of most drivers This is one of the best all round (ride, handling, towing, winter capability, MPG and acceleration - it beat a Porsche Panamera 4S in an impromptu drag where two lanes went to one land) cars that I have owned - it has 170K on it and I plan on getting to >250K - Sprinter vans with this engine have gone 700K - would give it 5 stars but for the Chrysler reliability issues I've had - the Mercedes V6 diesel has been outstanding 4 year update: June 2, 2021 The GDE tuned ("Hot Tune" - about 470+ ft. lbs. torque at 1800 - 2800 RPM) 3.0L diesel has been averaging 20- 22 MPG in 60/40 city highway driving and 25 -26 MPG at 75 MPH. It gets 19-20 MPG towing a 3200 lb. Bayside camper with the cruise set at 70 MPH and the AC on. It gets about the same MPG when towing our 18' Aliner at 65 - 70 MPH (2,000 lbs. but more frontal area than the Bayside - the Aliner has 65 MPH rated tires, the Bayside has 80+ MPH rated replacement tires so I typically drive faster with the Bayside). The Jeep's trailer stability works great and is seamless; the GC tows slightly better than my previous (much longer) Chevy LT full size van. I can drive 80 MPH comfortably with the Bayside. The GC had the fuel line replaced because of a leak and required numerous other repairs, some expensive, like shredding the fan belt). It has been below average for reliability; that is why the 4 star rating and not 5). I added SRT front and rear stabilizer bars to improve the handling and had all rotors and pads replaced. I am replacing them again after 45k miles with some higher performance rotors (drilled & slotted) and pads; the stock rotors/pads were acceptable, much better than the stock brakes on the Chevrolet LT full size van. I have Michelin LTX/M/S tires and the Jeep does great in the snow with them and gets about 4 MPG higher than its EPA highway rating. The driver lower seat cushion (leather - its a Limited model) is cracking and will need to be replaced at some point. Overall, I am very pleased with this vehicle at 176k miles. I have driven the later GC with the VM motor and although it is a very nice SUV, I prefer my tweaked 08 due to its better responsiveness (about 600 lbs. lighter), smaller size, grin inducing acceleration (0-30 times are competitive with some sports cars, including an embarrassed Porsche) and handling (it left a bumper riding Porsche Panamera 4S well behind on a tight freeway off-ramp turn) and its EPA exceeding fuel economy. Note: there was no 3.0L CRD engine option shown in the "Model" choices.

Most unreliable vehicle I've ever seen.
Purchased a 2008 Grand Cherokee with a tad over 100k miles on it. I owned it for 2 years and spent just over $6000 alone in repairs. Blown transmission, blown engine (thanks to a botched oil change that was financially covered by them, luckily) blown alternator, replaced ball joints, replaced struts, replaced CV joint, replaced radiator, pretty much every part that is in that car was replaced in my 2-year span of owning this vehicle. I ended up stuck on the side of the road on three different occasions. Not to mention the ridiculous gas mileage (averaged 14 at best.) It's unbelievably unreliable. Which SUCKS because it's great in any weather conditions you put it in and looks sleek. I'd highly recommend avoiding.

Gift to myself
I purchased car for its looks! The Hemi engine didn't mean a thing to me but apparently it does to my fiance! He was impressed with the engine, the smoothness of the ride, the comfort and the fact that every other Jeep we see- does not compare to it in looks. Take it in for regular maintenance. So far- just have to replace the battery (Engine light came on- diagnostic said the battery need to be replaced, which I knew but was told the battery had nothing to do with the engine light). I know my truck. It may be a bit more expensive maintenance and parts but well worth it. Another downfall for me is- the instructions to add music, pictures via usb are not clear- still working on it. JGC is great, oh....just a side note, watch your speed. I find myself ready to race everybody!!

For $45 buy a luxury SUV - Buyer Beware!
OK, I went to get my lease '08 Jeep and have regretted ditching my BMW every since. Soon after I picked up my overland the sealant on the quarter glass window started melting, took numerous calls to Leith Headquarters and Chrysler headquarters until they finally agreed to fix my Jeep. On top of that the electronic items in the car fail at any given time - including auto headlights!!! Still after all this time it malfunctions at any given time, stalls on the road while driving, speakers stop working, hard drive crashes and stalls, wipes out info stored in it, the list is endless as to what malfunctions on this Jeep!
terrible vehicle DO NOT BUY A JEEP
I bought this vehicle at 80,000 because I do lots of camping and hiking. The jeeps had the look and reputation of being good outdoorsy vehicles that made me believe it was the right choice for me. I was dead wrong. From the week after i got it this car was nothing but trouble. I have had it for two years and it now has 144,000 miles on it. In those two years I have had the stater replaced 4 times, the water pump, serpentine belt, idle sensor, alternator, idle intake valve, and the fuel pump all replaced. Not to mention the back driver side window stopped working, about 6 months after i got it the radio cut off and rarely worked, meaning the navigation system and back up camera also would not work. There was a very loud hum while going above 55 on highway, and before you say it no it was not the tires, the hum only occurred when my foot was on the gas. The acceleration would stutter occasionally if i was at a complete stop and tried to accelerate slowly. and if all this has not deterred you yet my car is now about to BLOW A ROD OR PISTON. Rendering my car useless and the only option is to replace the engine entirely. Mind you this car is at 144,000 miles. I had a 97 Ford Bronco that had 270,000 on it and it ran just fine never had to replace anything major. But the 2008 jeep grand cherokee? 144,000 miles and it is no longer operational? thats pathetic. So if you do ever buy a jeep of any year or any model just know you are essentially purchasing scrap metal on wheels. I will NEVER buy any product from jeep again. (UPDATE NOTE) I have now had a 2017 Ford Escape since this post and it is the best most reliable vehicle I’ve ever driven.
