To whom it may concern
I bought my jaguar a year ago used from a hometown dealer. The car only had one previous owner and was bought with 78k miles. i was so excited about my new car and i looked great driving it. The car was such a beauty. i later found out that beauty isn't everything when within the first year of owning this vehicle I've had to replace the starter, water pump and transmission. this car has cost me 7k, almost more than it's worth. i guess it's a lesson learned. I'm writing this review to help anyone anyway i can.
Well it is early, but what a deal
Okay, I was looking for AWD for the snow conditions we live in. Subaru, Honda, 100k miles 15 grand plus. I found a 2002 Jaguar AWD with 29k miles! 10 year old car looks brand new! Amazing 1/2 the price of them japanese cars! I drove it home on the curvey mtn roads and that auto/manual tranny, I never had to use the breaks! Got about 25 mpg fwy, and 19 mountain roads. I never expected to get an older vehicle that is like new!!!
Amazing car for the price
I have owned my jaguar x-type (sport, lowered, 3.0, manual) for about 8 months and 12k miles. I have never been let down once with this car (even with 120k miles,) although other reviewers will say different. The only trick with this car is that it doesn't like to be abused. If you keep everything maintained via recommendations on forums and not the dealership, everything will continue to run smoothly.
A victim of misjudging
My X-Type has treated me very well; power and handling are always there when I need it. On the road, I'm confidant of the ability to pass someone even if they try to accelerate to close the gap. Sitting in this car, you really feel at one with the machine as the seat wraps around your body reassuringly, connecting you with the road as the roar of the engine actually sounds like the primal growl of a wild, angry jaguar. The steering wheel allows you to feel your way without becoming disconnected from the road as you do with many luxury cars. We have to remember, to judge this car in the same class as other high-end cars would be unfair. This is an entry level car delivering above par results.
Great car for the money
Well !!!!! as with every car we review, we will find owners that hate and owners that love ther rides. My Jag is by no means perfect ( NO CAR IS ) but for a car under $5000 Look at what you get. Luxury!!!!!. Do your own oil changes. Your own break job. And if you cant. DONT take it to a dealership. Find a good indi shop. Buy your parts on e-bay. It will cost you just as much to repair as a Ford. (preventative maintanance) is what it is about. You will have a very reliable car with the Jaguar.
X-Type is "All that AND more"
Haven't had mine too long but love it completely. It replaces a 18 year old Acura. Gets better mileage (avg. 21 city) is absolutely stunning to look at and turns heads everywhere I go. This isn't just an automobile, its rolling artwork. When I showed it to my friends the most heard thing they say is, "Oh my god, its so beautiful!" This thing feeds my ego quite nicely. I can't image any other car making me happier. I am very very satisfed.
Transmission swap
Those of you who had a automatic transmission swap (out of warranty) had two options, buy a new tranny or a rebuilt unit. I chose the rebuilt unit ($2700 including labor). Afterward I looked into the issue and found the rebuilt have enhancements and internal fixes the brand-new ones lack. So rebuilt is BETTER than new.
Car shakes and wont accelerate over 40
I have a jaguar X type 2.5 and when i would accelerate the car would shake and slow down as if running out of fuel. I changed the fuel filter but that didn't solve it even though the fuel filter was almost clogged. I tried changing sensors and thought it was the transmission but the reason was when i was washing the engine water got into the spark plugs and was blocking off the spark. I blew out all the water with an air compressor then put in the spark plugs and it works like a charm ever since. hopefully this can be helpful to somebody.
Baby Jag
The car is exceptional!! What I don't understand is why only the negative responses seem to be posted. This car is not the typical Jag. It is sporty and fun. All the safety features are very comforting. It is all that and then some.
Decent Entry Level Luxury Car
I've had my X-Type for two years. It handles well. Not quick when accelerating until you get over 2500rpms. Handles fantastic in snow. I've had to rebuild one of the brake calipers. Every imaginable lightbulb has gone out (replaced easily and cheaply). Overall it is reliable, but not super comfortable on long trips. Gas mileage is so-so. It's a head-turner, but I quickly realized I'd like a car that rides smoother and handles better. Suspension feels stiff. Great deal for the money though minus some minor annoyances at times. When it's freshly cleaned, I do sit up straighter in my seat...It's a Jag, hardly anyone has one! Fit for a queen, affordable (if you buy used) for everyone.
The worst car I've ever owned
My car loves to spend time getting service. It's been at the dealer for service 10 months of the 48 months I've owned the car. I can't remember the many new parts it has but you can say they have rebuilt the thing. Nobody can deny is beautiful but is a piece of junk.
Best car I have ever owned!
Drove my baby jag for many years, loved it sooo much. Disabled now and car had sat for a while as I was unable to drive it. Made me cry like a baby to have to sell it to someone else! She was fast and Emerald Fire paint was gorgeous! Ivory interior oozed class. Before I sold it I let my grandson drive it and he just smiled and giggled the whole time, he is 12 and we may have created a little Jag fan! I regret I could not keep it forever.

People just don't know how great X-Types are.
I owed an 02 X-Type sport for about 4 years. I absolutely loved every minute. Never had it break down, no major issues. An absolute beast in the snow, I had more maneuverability and confidence in deep snow than a Subaru. If maintained correctly and not according to a typical domestic vehicle, an X-Type will last you over 200k miles. I have never driven such an enthusiastic car. Regretfully, I know I never will again until I purchase another down the road. Worth EVERY penny for this much car.

Disappointed
Trouble from the start. I have never taken a trip without visiting a Jaguar Dealer for repairs. My current dealer has tried to fix all the problems, but they seem to be totally overwhelmed with all the problems. They now refuse to even try to repair. The car is still under warrenty, but Jaguar has walked away.I talked to the dealer about other models, but they say they are even less reliable. Bad News!!!!
Outstanding value when purchased used
I did a lot of research before deciding on this car, a mint 2002 X-Type 2.5 Automatic in Carnival Red. I had wanted an entry-luxury car to handle my long daily commute and I looked at BMW, Mercedes, Saab, Infiniti, etc. I was drawn to this car's great looks and the comments I get from others confirm that. I knew of Jaguar's dubious history of poor reliability and also read many of the lukewarm and even negative reviews. I am very pleased with this car. It is an amazing value on the used market. I can understand that some who bought new may be a little underwhelmed because of the price. But at the price I paid this car is a steal. I was able to add an extended warranty.
X-Type Excels
I have had the X-Type for 3 years and it is a pleasure to drive. It is very confortable and handles beautifully. A real driving machine! There is a little hesitation when accelerating quickly; however, this is improved by not using high test gasoline.
Wow GREAT Performance for 2.5S
I purchased the jag with 56k mi about 1 1/2 yr ago and I was blown away on how well the performance of this car it sounds like an American muscle car when I punch it to pass uphill or entering freeway. It's fast for a V6 and it does roar. Now I'm hooked on jag! The only thing is when I needed oil pan gasket fix it's hard to get into the pan without taking apart everything from the bottom and labor was expensive plus parts $1000. When I purchased it I did not know that it was an AWD and my gas mileage is poor in mix driving but you can get good mileage on the freeway.
Mechanically a disgrace!
I have owned this car for 7 months. It went back to the shop under warranty 5 times in less than two months. The transmission still shifts ruff after having the control module reset twice. I have had to replace the drive shaft at an expense of $883.00 and now I have to have the power steering hose replaced at a cost of $489.00. The warranty ran out last month and these expenses have been incurred within less than a month of that!!!! What a piece of junk!!!! Oh I forgot that the vent covers on top of the dash pop up when the temp outside changes and I finally supper glued them down. I will not buy another.
Never again will I buy another Jaguar
I will never buy another Jaguar. I have owned my car for 3 years and have had it in the shop for countless things (in fact, it needs to be taken in again but I just don't care anymore). Thank God the dealership would not sell it to me without an extended warranty otherwise I would be in BIG trouble. I can't even begin to tell you about all the issues with it. And, to make matters worse, I am trying to trade it in for a newer, more reliable vehicle and I have been the laughing stock of every dealership I have been to. I am about $10,000 upside down in it which is making negotiations very difficult. I will never, ever recommend one of these cars. They are crap.
Don't Buy an X-Type
Tons of electrical problems that are not easy to figure out or fix and transmission died at 115,000 miles. Interior is average and gas mileage isnt very good. Unacceptable.

Great car -still going strong
Wonderfully smooth on the highway, with paw like handling on country roads. The manual shift 2.5 gives back performance lost in the automatics I tested - the car will really move with revs kept above 2500.
X-Type Dissapointment
Good Points: Engine very responsive, great sound system, good visability, excellent handling. Bad Points: Many rattles and squeeks, very loud road and wind noise, breaks are also loud. Overall quality is poor, especially for a car costing over $40k. This was an impulse purchase. I did a lot of research and I was intending on buying an Audi A4 or A6. I regret my decision every day I drive to work.
Jaguar X-Type: The Car of the Future-Today
This car will set you back in your seat if you press the gas pedal half way down. I wouldn't dare press mine all the way down as the front end jumps up in the air-There is too much power, so be careful, it can get away from you. Beautiful paint (Mine is a champaign color). It's an Arizona car. It's got the injection system of the new corvettes, it's low to the ground, sleek and stylish. I'd strongly recommend this car to any serious buyer (IF you can find the X-Type Sedan). Mine was made in Germany. What a car !!!

Dream car Nightmare Jaguar X type
My dream car has had multiple problems. Had to have a new driver door latch - could not open door from outside at all; trunk latch malfunctions consistently; gear box fault light comes on frequently and the service department can't seem to figure out if it's a computer glitch or mechanical problem; engine light has also come on. I wouldn't recommend this car to anyone!!!!!
JUNK
This is the biggest piece of junk i have ever bought. it started breaking down the 2nd day after i bought it. its has been in the shop 23 times. Warranty just ran out and we are getting rid of this car as quickly as possible. i have had problems with brakes, transmission, ignition, main computer, door panels. My wife and baby have been stranded 3 times because the car wouldn't start it would say security enabled and the only way to reset it is at the dealership. which is 100 miles from where we live. When i had problems with the brakes it went on for 3 months they had to get the engineers who designed the brakes and fly them into the dealership to finally fix them. Bottom line it's junk
X type 2002 2.5 automatic
Happy with this beautiful car, handles & runs great, highly recommend it, but for some reason, back in December, it suddenly stops running at 2975 RPMS. We put all new coils and a new fuel pump on, made no difference. I am at loss on what to do. I am just driving it with lite foot, still runs up to 80 MPH before it hits 2975. Any body else having this problem?? [contact info removed]

Baby, it's cold outside
I love driving my new jag. Having come up from a taurus sho, it handles better, has better performance and is a joy. My biggest complaint however, is the 'low outside temperature' message that comes on each and every time I turn on the car, and won't go away until I hit reset. For goodness sake, I live in Michigan, I know it's cold in January.
Hit Or Miss Car
I have owned 2 3.0 Liter X Types. One was great, only a few minor problems in 2 years. This sport model I have now is a lemon. Constant new noises, died 2 times for who knows what, and has probably been in the shop 10 times for maintenance. Good thing I have a warranty. To top it off, the car loses its value faster than anything Ive seen on this planet. All European cars are finicky, its really hit or miss. If you want these cars, get a warranty.
2002 - bad year for X-Type
The Jaguar X-Type I purchased had only 2000 miles on it when purchased. The dealer was excellent, however my car was in the shop for repair numerous times. Transmission rebuilt at 45000 miles, starter and alternator replaced at the same mileage. The rear axle had to replaced, at my own expense at a cost of $1000.00, because of sensor issue at 60000 miles. I had to superglue vent cover down on dash, sensor lights keep coming on, poor gas mileage, avg. 20 mpg. I would not recommend this brand to anyone.
2002 Jaguar X Type Sport
Jaguar, or Ford, whichever one suits or thrills you, produced a winner! It's true that the X Type is not a BMW but, if you need to compare it to a BMW then just go buy one. The car has it's minor comparative faults but it's biggest fault is a driver who has nothing to do but compare it to something else. The interior is not "Spartan," it is very conservatively sleek and pleasing. The rear seat room is a bit cramped but this is not a family vehicle or a taxi. The X Type holds the road well and is great in curves. The bottom line is that it is nice. Test drive it and if "you" like it, ignore those who don't.
X Type Sucks
Although I like the cars handeling and looks,,,, I have had a lot of problems from day 1 of my purchase. At the 50,000 mile make a leak in the drive train sent oil everyware under the car and on to the exast system. The repair was $1000 and the cost of the rental car $250.00. Jag corperate said "tough break" "Deal with it" Needless to say... I am NOT very happy
Visit Repair Shop Monthly
I have only had my jag for 3 months, and within the 1st week, the driver door lock failed allowing me no access. Never use the emergency brake. dont even touch it, because you will have a annoying loud clunking under the car for about 2 days until it wiggles it way back into place. Dont expect your car to start either. Fuel pump replaced at 29000 miles. Many other problems, seats recline on own when away from car, air bag failure light comes on and off. Wiper hoses dissconnect, seat stablizers loosen easily, crome worn out before 30,000. Still cant figure out how to get vent feature on a/c system.I'm selling at 32,000 before i cant get my money back.
Fun Car but has some problems
I love driving this car! However, when we purchased our car (used) the check engine light came on in the first few days. Over the course of 6 weeks the light went on and off and the service station didn't know why and could only reset it. Also, the driver side door handle is poorly designed. If you don't lift up on it just right it won't release the latch so you can open the door. It is very frustrating. Also the boot open indicator occasionally comes on when driving down the highway, but goes back off shortly. Overall though I'm extremely pleased with the car and still feel happy every time I get in to start her up!
2002 X-Type 3.0 Sport
I just purchased a 2002 X-Type 3.0 Sport and am grateful I did. I love driving this car! It has the firm, sports-car oriented driving style that I like in a car. I love driving this car far more than my '02 330i. The car is a head turner. Watch out though for possible electrical problems. I have already had a window regulator go out on the back window. Overall, I would buy this car again and again.
X-Terrific
Used this vehicle in snow, rain, and dry conditions and it has performed beautifully in all! Great car for notherners who have to brave the winter wonderland. Beautiful vehicle, smooth ride and great interior.
Transmission problems for the past 2yrs.
My 2002 X-Type just went out of warranty in March, 2008. This morning I took the car to the shop because the transmission began to slip. For the past 2 years, I've been seeing a gear fault light but the service center could not duplicate the message. Now the transmission is gone and it will cost me close to $9K to get it fixed. The car is not even worth that much anymore! Where is the reliability for buying such an expensive car?
Student
My Jaguar x-type just hit 120,000 and still drives great! My dad purchased the car in 2005 and recently I purchased the car since I commute to school. The car drives well, and is extremely responsive. It's a very high performance car, and will perform to keep you safe. The interior is like riding in your living room. The car is very good in the snow. I have the FWD drive model, and while everyone else is skidding off the road, I am moving along with no problems. We are located in Ohio and I have driven on some nasty snow packed country roads with it, and it performed great. As a student who commutes, I needed a safe reliable car and Jaguar fits the bill.
DONT BELIEVE
I was shocked to read the review entitled, "Do you like your wallet? By Style, not substance." Anyone who knows their Jags knows that Ford bought Jaguar around 1985, and ever since that, the cars have been extremely reliable. Therefore, I do not understand their "but the reliability on long commutes would worry me a great deal." Also, they say BMW is a much better choice, which is by opinion only. For anyone considering this car, or just bought it, you chose wisely. I am very pleased; my last car was an XJ Vanden Plas Sedan. This car is much more entertaining to drive, and not too "starched." Nevertheless, this is a JAGUAR.
I love this Cat and I am a dog man
This car is simply excellent. It looks great, drives like a dream and is comfortable as well. The all wheel drive and optional sports shift (push a button) let you play formula 1 or old foggie driving. As the Army would say, be all you can be and drive this cat.
Goodbye to my SUV
I've been driving my new 2.5 X type Jag. for about a week. It is hard to believe you get this much bang for your buck. It was about the same MSRP as my Nissan Pathfinder, which I thought was a great car too, but this is real comfort. The inclusion of scheduled maintainance, road service and a loaner is the cherry on top of the ice cream. It is truly a luxery car and I like it better than my Mercedes
Fun to Drive
This vehicle was the second one that I ordered. The first one had the sport suspension and 17 inch wheels. I felt there was too much noise and vibration from the combination and opted to reorder. I bought the non sport version, 5 speed, it is a lot of fun to drive and significantly more comfortable. This car is awesome. The car handles great through backroads and tight turns and did great in the snow storms. A friend who has taken high speed driving and handling courses for work drove it and couldn't believe the grip the AWD had on the road at the speeds we cornered. Over all, I'm very satisfied.
FUN
I wanted a 5 speed car and when I took it for a test drive I fell in love with it. The all wheel drive feature makes it handle so well, rather like the Audi 4 (another choice). The price is great, although with a sun roof and 6 CD player it came to $37,500. The front view is beautiful, the back not so bad but the side view is pure Ford Taurus...but I live with it for the price and the way it drives. I see very few where I live but I think it is a little low end for the neighborhood...the S is getting popular here as well as the big ones. tj
Special car
This was my 1st Jaguar purchase in the States after having 2 UK models back in Blighty before emigrating to the US. I was dubious about buying a US specification car after enjoying a X- type & a S-type over the pond. My concerns were soon put to bed after I took the car for a test drive. I loved it, despite the steering wheel being on the wrong side. When you sit behind the wheel of a Jag, you know you're sat in a car that all the "others" aspire to match! My wife had been "Japanese cars only" until she drove the Jag. Now she won't even look at anything else. It handles like a sports car, the AWD is awesome, the quality and driving experience are unmatched from anything else out there!
Edmunds is all wet on this Jag!!
Edmunds got it all wrong on its review of the X type. This is my first Jag. After two BMWs, this car rides as well if not better than my former 5 and 3 series cars. It handles great and it clearly gets the looks and great comments that BMW never did. Most importantly, in the first 100 miles of the car, I was nearly in an accident. It responded perfectly. So far, I couldn't be happier. It's a joy to drive. The dealership in the Pittsburgh area was first rate too.
Glad It's Mine!
After a reveiw of Audi a4, VW Passat, Infiniti G35(horrible dealer experience) , Acura TL Type S,Volvo s60 and Lexus IS 300. The JAG was a more complete package with a more elegant persona that fit my wants.
Lemon
I bought a new X-Type in Jan 02. After just one day I had to return the car because of a faulty drive shaft. New one was faulty and so on. After 4 replacements it work. Oh, did I mention that the car had a missing Head light when I picked it up. Next problem the heating system stopped working. Sun roof needs re-cycling from time to time. Now the car is back with the Dealership to try and sort out a bad noise from the roof. Worse car I've ever bought. I did suggest to the Dealership that they should replace the car after one week which they agreed too if I bought out the lease for $16,000! Avoid this car and Dealership.
Do you like your wallet?
Then look elsewhere. Jaguar entices people with a low initial MSRP, but add anything that you feel a Jaguar should have and your in the high 30's. Interior is beautiful, probably finest in class. 2.5 engine is lacking but not abysmal. Ride is pleasant. Even if your budget allows for a fully loaded car, you're better off with a German nameplate if such things appeal to you, which it does just about everyone. I understand how the style convinces the buyer, but the reliability on long commutes would worry me a great deal. BMW does a much better job with value and quality. Just my impression based on extensive research and test drive.
Fun to Drive
This car is a lot more fun to drive than I expected. The 3.0L five speed really takes off. Comfort is great, sound is even better. Top notch audio system.
Great Car
Great car. After six months, no problems, runs great, a lot of fun to drive. Holds the road like a cat, as it should. I look forward to the R version.
