Bought it 3 years ago with 139,000 miles
The only thing I have spent on is oil changes, worn brakes, tires, or general maintenance. This car even with the high mileage rides very very good. It is quiet and rides smoothly. It is aesthetically well proportioned and luxurious. I will say it isn't economical on gas. It also doesn't hug the road like my Volvo 950. It is solid feeling and I am enjoying the ride. I now have about 178,000 miles.
Incredible
I don't understand why people dislike these cars so much. I believe it boils down to the attitude of the owner. A 2000 Honda Civic driver says they have the most reliable car ever and they love it ( 2 of the windows don't roll down, interior is falling apart but it still starts stops and gets them places so therefore it's great.) Meanwhile you ask a 2000 jag owner and a window stops rolling down and its the worst car they've ever owned. THE CAR IS 15 YEARS OLD ITS GOING TO HAVE A FEW ISSUES! So far the only thing I've had to do to my S-Type is replace a window regulator ($30) and replace the MAF sensor ($30) both of which I did myself. It is RWD so it absolutely sucks in the snow but I got sedan chains that make it drive great during the winter. I feel that jag owners want to scare people off with expensive repair bills just because they believe they are too good for everyone else to drive one. Obviously if you don't care about the quality and enjoyment of owning a nice car by all means go for the Honda Civic. It will be easier for you to fix yourself if something happens and it is more fuel efficient. However, if you enjoy a fast fun luxury car the Jaguar s-type is amazing!

Still Lovin' My JAG
I bought this Jaguar brand new when the commercials first appeared on tv. I traded a brand new Lexus SUV with less than 4000 miles for this classic, sleek and gorgeously styled "Cat". Needless to say it was love at first sight. There have been very few mechanical problems (none which have kept me from enjoying the great performance of this car). And I can honestly say I have enjoyed the ride.
Run from the 2000 S-type 3.0
After reading the other reviews in here (very few of which were positive) I can concur with almost everything. This car, though gorgeous, is a mechanical nightmare. I bought mine used, it's almost paid off, and I will get rid of it asap. If you ever by an s- type 3.0, you'd better have a great warranty to fix the common issues seen on almost all s types eventually: (coils fail, o2 sensors fail, coolant seals fail, headlights fail, headliner falls, oil leaks, transmission problems, weak brakes, plastic parts eventually fail, rear window tracks fail.) if you do your research (like I should have) you'll see negative comments all over the web about this model car. Buy it if you can afford many repairs!
Absolutely Fabulous
I shopped used Jags online for over 6 months before I was ready to purchase...When i finally shopped in real life, there were a lot of dogs out there! Be careful, if it looks like Gremlins lived in it, you can bet maintenance wasn't performed! Shop around! Even though my car is 16 years old, people ask me if she's new! I would not have considered buying had I not known this model was built under the ownership of Ford... [my previous cars were Lincoln Mark 8, 96 T-bird, 90 T-bird, and a 78 Mustang II, so I'm sort of partial to Fords!] My husband says it should be no more difficult to repair, if the time comes, than my Lincoln which i drove for 14 years...It is a perfect car for my job as a Realtor, gives me instant cred! She is a real head turner, and stands out as special in a sea of Mercedes and BMWs. I have had no issues since I bought her, and I always smile when I get in! It has the V8 power I love, and a smooth ride my clients love! I do wish it had more of today's technology, and plan to upgrade that as Nav and bluetooth phone are really a necessity in my profession. 2 years since I wrote this review and she has only needed minor maintenance. New Oxygen Sensors. As far as O2 sensors go they were inexpensive ($275 w/ installation) . I also replaced a battery. I feel these items are merely maintenance. Other than that she has been reliable as hell, quick as a bunny, and a knockout in the looks Dept.

Cheap broken plastic bits everywhere
Pretty car, atrocious build quality, not so much assembly, but the cheapest garbage plastic everywhere. Inside trim pieces break, but worse, crappy plastic in critical components, including transmission shift gate and window lifts necessitating unreasonably expensive repairs to replace cheap broken parts. Brakes mushy with expensive pads and rotors, front suspension is a disaster. Tie rod ends, hubs, ball joints all made out of crap and need replacement. So if you're lucky, you won't need to do what everybody else has had to: replace the transmission, front end, a/c and heat components, engine coils, window regulators, etc. AND DON'T SLAM THE DOORS. Your window regulators will break.
A Beautiful piece of crap!
I bought this vehicle with 90,000 miles on it as a back up vehicle, but simply fell in love with it. It rides so smooth that we ended up driving it more and more, unfortunately it has too many issues; the transmission being the main one. Also the fail safe engine mode light comes on once a month, it seems like and it's always a $400-500 repair. You have to get it fixed b/c if you don't your car can shut down and just go 15 mph; not something you want to happen when you are on the interstate. Beautiful vehicle, but too much of a headache!
Timeless design, is aging well
The classic S Jag still elicits "it's gorgeous" comments. Looks aside, car performs on par with today's peers...powerful, quiet, and with excellent road manners. The Jag (knock on wood...and there is plenty to knock on) has been reliable with only one issue (radio went out).
Looks amazing, quality is the worst of all-time
I always loved the looks of Jaguars. I always wanted one. I bought a 2000 S-Type with 48k miles on it. Thought, I can't go wrong! From day 1, every, oh, I'd say 30-45 days, the check engine light comes on. Yes, needs a repair, whether it be minor or major about once a month, on average. Ignition Coils, 4 catalytic converters, oxygen sensor, the Heat completely stopped working twice, Gearbox went, had a bizarre problem with my rear brakes, CD changer shorted out, cigarette lighter blows fuses once a month, rear windows don't go down, one back door doesn't shut all the way... I could literally go on and on. This car is the biggest piece of crap imaginable.
Research for parts
the valve cover gaskets start to leak every couple of years allowing oil to fill up spark plug compartment, and shorting out ignition coils. 0n V6 models you can not access coils, and spark plugs without taking off big intake pipes on cylinder numbers 1-2-3. You must be careful not to break small plastic line coming from top radiator hose going to overflow canister, when removing valve cover, or just inspecting hose's. Another big headache is finding bushings for upper, and lower control arm bushings for front, and rear. without bushings the car squeaks, and can cause vibration. Recommend you do not buy cheap front lower ball joints. The driver side power window system is always breaking. I have replaced 3 times, with more problems. If you do not search for parts you will pay way too much.

Worst car I ever owned!!!
I bought my 2000 S-Type 4.0 new and have spent a fortune on it and had many days in the shop while still warranted as well. Don't believer I ever got out fr less than $800. I can count on one hand how many people have ever sat in the back seat, that window never is used, yet I'm on my fourth window raising device. The car leaks and three trips to the shop they can't find the source carpet If the car stalls right after starting, it will never start again, have had it towed four times. Ball joints gone at 70k, trunk has leaked since it was new. the gas release has stopped three times, the mirrors don't adjust and there's a rattle in the center of the dash they can't find a solution for.
Jaguar 2000 S Type 4.0
Very fun to drive. 4.0 version is like a rocket. Lots of power and great handling. There is good road feel while still feeling like a luxury car. Back seat is a little small but usable. Only one small annoyance which is that the glove box vibrates when very cold. The head-turning factor is also great. People assume the car costs much more than it does. Overall, I would buy it again.
WORST vehicle for QUALITY.
Expensive repair required every 90 days. Every thing is repaired from trans/engine to things you can not expect. It is always a surprise. But best part is you will replace lot of window regulators. Recommend to STOP using window.
A Beautiful Piece of Crudd...
I purchased this 2000 S type 3.0 several years ago with less than 40K miles on it. It's an absolutely beautiful car and I still get compliments from strangers. IF they only knew what sort of NIGHTMARE this car is mechanically. From cheap front headlights, to constant leaks, continued engine trouble, poor brakes and constant repair bills. I'm looking to dump this car as soon as it makes sense monetarily. DO NOT buy a 2000 Jag S Type from any dealer. At first, you'll love you car ... but eventually you'll regret the day you drove it off the lot.
Run far from this car - don't do it
Worst purchase of my life. 55k when purchased and 6 months later I have less than 60k and have had the car in the shop more than 5 times. Replaced evaporator, condenser, 2 coils with the need to still replace the others. Both back windows quit working. One of them falls down. Idles rough probably because of the coils. Trans doesn't shift correctly. Interior compartment door latch broke. Entire dash taken out to repair freon leak. Total cost has been over 2k in repairs without fixing some of the outstanding problems. Every time I see a car like this I say "but isn't it pretty". In other words if you want a car that looks great but runs like crap then buy this car. If you value your money don't.
2000 S-Type Jaguar 3.0
This is my third used Jaguar since 2000. Each one was 6 years old when I purchased them. They have each been better as the years went on. Build quality in the 2000 is much better than my 1994 SJ6. It is a very comfortable car (my wife reminds me of this regularly) and has lots of bells and whistles. We enjoy the heated front seats this time of year (January) and the moon roof in the summer. The car is plenty fast enought for me and as long as I stay around 75 miles an hour, fuel economy is good. So far the car has cost me $0 in maintenance (dealer looks after all fluids for first 2 years). They replaced two burned out lower beam lights no charge. Lights are on all the time.
The cr has been traded in. I am no longer own it.
Has anyone else had rear view mirror problems on a 2000 type S model? My rear view mirror allows me to see the back seat, not out the back window. Is there a solution? This problem ruins the enjoyment of driving this car.

From BMW M3 to Jag Type S?
Went from a 97 BMW M3 which was a wonderfully reliable, striking, and fun to drive vehicle because my wife was tired of shifting in heavy traffic, etc. Bought the jag from one of my customers- it has been a wonderful vehicle! No headaches, suffering, or disasters! Had a couple of small problems, quickly and easily solved. Thje car is certainly more sedate and refined than the M3, while the M3 is certainly the sportier of the two. The Jaguar has more options, more toys, etc. While the M3 is the better "race car" the Jaguar is certainly the choice for long, fast & relaxed cruising; the V8 engine has ample power for spirited driving in traffic. Good mileage, too: 27mpg highway.
Impossible to fix - 2000 Jaguar S Type
Was an electrical nightmare. Jaguar hasn't updated the modular computer codes and won't. Window regulators break often. Was impossible to fix exhaust sensor read outs. I finally had to give up on it as the rear sub-frame is made of cast iron. It rotted out and one more pothole would have sent the rear end to the pavement. It was fun to drive, comfortable, and beautiful to look at. But way not worth the constant repairs. Spend $5,000.00 more on a different model and within a year it will be cheaper to own than an S Type.

Lucky find
I have owned this car for 4 years and only replaced the battery, had a sensor replaced, and replaced the window cable. This car was 57K new and I bought her with 52K miles for only $5300. Mine looks almost new, thank you. Thank God ignorant people are afraid of these cars. Winner winner, lobster dinner!

Terrible Car
We bought this car a while ago for around 56K... We sold it for 12k. The worst car every owned by far. Don't get me wrong it's beautiful but other than that it stinks. We now have a mercedes s class that's 837264517635 times better than this car. Let's face it... THE BRITISH CANNOT MAKE CARS!!! Oh! and we had a whopping five trannys in it and it spews blue smoke!!!
Terrible Reliability
This is the worst luxury (?) car I have ever had. Never know what is going to fail next. How can Jaguar get away with such an awful car? I have spent thousands repairing this car. Do yourself a favor and buy something else. Anything else.
These cars are junk and Ford knows it!
The car falls apart a little more every day. Service actions overseas were prompt but not in USA. Motor problems at 50K, J-gate shifter with plasic piece that fails when stuck in Park, windows that will fail and fall inside the doors, over priced dealer repairs, service reps that deny what is all over the net and reported to NHTSA and Jag international that does not care at all!
Great Car
After owing Mercedes and BMW, I found this car to be a lot of fun! The ride is so smooth. Even after owing the S- type for three years, I still look foward to getting in the car.
Transmision is crap
With age, (i.e. around 50000 mi), the transmission will not come out of park on "any" slope. This is not fixable according to Jaguar and is still being duplicated on the new ones. To us, this means, that it is not econimically fixable without listening to a lot of our grief, or some class action response. Their "answer" is to always remember to put the emerg brake on first, then put in park, then turn off the engine. Their own service person didn't do this on our last oil change. According to their consumer response people, this is a "Typical and common problem".
Didn't see this one coming
What can I say; buy the car on a Monday and have over $3,000 in repairs before the weekend. The bleeding doesn't stop there. Make the monthly payment and triple that for repairs. Has been that way for over a year now. Been paying $9 per lug nut, $1000 for a starter w/o installation, just lose the key, or have the hood ornament taken. The leather fades in color, the sun roof sticks, and the car only starts when it feels like it. Doesn't drive well at all in any amount of snow. It stays at home, it won't move! My dream is my worst nightmare. Anyone can afford to buy a Jag, but not many can afford to keep one. The parts are dealer only, no aftermarket, and are about 400% more. Sad!
Love my Jag!
I bought my 2000 Jag S-Type in 2008 with only 30,000 original miles. It now has 57K but has had some AC/Heater problems fortunately covered by the extended warranty which cost close to 4,300 to repair. The sensor in the gas tank seems to cause the Check Engine light to come on and off when the tank is full or empty. So I live with that knowing that there is a sensitive problem with the CE light and gas tank. The car is a real eye catcher and the ride is so smooth. I love the way the car seems to hug you too. My only concern is that I have left my car and come back and found my windows down and sunroof open. My husband believes me now since it happened to him also. Weird. I still love my Jag!
My Jag
I love this car! One of must beautifull cars in the world!!!
Good car
Bought one in 2007. Kept it until 2014. Only issues i had was the water pump and heater control valve. No engine/transmission problems the 7 years I had it. Fun car to drive and it got alot of attention 🙂. Got rid of it because in the 7th year, the timing chain was going bad, and replacement cost was almost as much as the car was valued at.

2000 S-Type
I purchased this 2000 S-Type from a private owner just last month. It is white, with chrome rims and 45 series tires, with an after market mesh grill. This car gets so many compliments. Mechanically the car is excellent, the ride is great, the style is one of a kind.
The dream car of my late wife.
Only item is the lack of an odometer - dealer says it's lights that have burned out. Must disassemble the entire dashboard to get at the lights. My concern is that the car will not come back to me factory-new. I can live w/o an odometer. Given the age of the car (2000), the State of Florida doesn't care about what the mileage is. Mileage about 100K. Bought the car in a private sale in 2003 with 9K on the odometer. Car is a 9 inside and out. Second owner. Always garaged and is garaged today. I don't drive it because I drive an F-250 pick-up.

Lovely ornament
Dont do it. They are beutiful. A dream to drive. Seem inexpensive compared to how they look. If you dont over pay on sticker it could mean something is wrong. Low mileage 20 yrs after mfg could be a sign of early problems and low use. Plastic chips and fades on dash. Transmition way more than car value to replace. Headliner fsils. Fuel pump 1k to replace. Struts and suspensiom expensive. Vents on dash fade and crack too. Run.
S-type two years later
After comparison shopping (Volvo bi- turbos, BMW 540) bought a demo S-type in August 2000. Two years later I can report that the experience has been perfect - I mean PERFECT! Since delivery NOTHING has gone wrong with this car - not only no big things but not even a loose stitch in the upholstery or a rattle. It's been 100% reliable. I am an aggressive driver and appreciate and use the ABS and traction control features regularly. The engine is silky smooth with an appropriate growl which comes in at about half throttle. The transmission is good - not great. Slowly depressing the throttle gets you accelerated much faster with less fuss.
Looks great; pity about the mechanics
Love the outside, pity about the workmanship. Yes the interior doesn't hold much room, but I didn't buy it for that. Unfortunately just after the warantee finished both front windows fell off their levers costing and arm and a leg to fix. The moulding on the front of the car also came away.
do not judge car by its goods looks
totally disappointing in reliability. constant trip to the shop ... water pump , air conditioning ,door opening problems . never again!
Love My Jag!
Purchased brand new, and it was money well spent. Invested in additional options e.g. interior wood package, chrome rims and body chrome.... and with the Jag being Black.... it remains a head turner. I have owned and continue to own many luxury cars, as well. Within the past two years, the only out of pocket expenses paid were for a cracked windshield fluid container, oil pan gasket, ignition coil set replacement, and the interior roof fabric had to be redone. My Jag has been reliable, and it is fun to drive. It is a definite keeper! And it is now 2009.
Love it - Hate it - Don't buy it!
I fell in love with the lines and appearance of the S-Type when they first came out, so I bought a used one several years ago with less than 40k miles on it. That's where the love affair ended. This car (as are most S-Types) quickly became a mechanical nightmare (and I take care of my cars and am an easy driver). With less than 12k miles on it, I had issues with the brakes, coolant leak, gasket leak, radiator leak, failed headlights, issues with front brakes, failed cig lighter, failed O2Sensor, failed catalyst...the list never stops. Jag quality was bad, but Ford didn't help!
Nothing to fear from this Jag
As a former Lexus owner, when I bought this Jag, I was prepared for the worst, mechanically. After over three years - to my absolute pleasure - this has been and remains a phenomenal vehicle - mechanically and visually. I would purchase another without hesitation when that time comes. During my ownership, I've only had one issue. A rear window belt snapped and had to be replaced. Easily done at the dealership...and not too obnoxiously priced. So far, the quality is right on par with the Lexus...but with much better performance and more style.
Transmission/Gearbox/Locks in park
My Jaguar was a gift from my husband. I love the body style of the car, however I am suprised that a recall has not been issued for the cars defaults such as transmission/gearbox failure. My cars has gotten stuck in park on three occassion, it happens on inclines.I have also experienced several small items breaking/falling apart on the car such as latch on opening to gastank, windows falling out, gastank replaced, seatleather redone. One other problem I have had was valves replaced. esomd
Rave for Jag S
I have had a excellent experience with both this dealer and with the vehicle itself. This jag makes you want to drive everywhere! Even young people give me thimbs up when they walk past me at a stop light! I've had only a few minor problems with this pre-owned beauty, all covered under warranty, and no hassles about it at all. I'll definitely buy another one.
2000 S Type
The console storage is small, there are too many squeeks and rattles for a car of this price, and the rear window motor gave out with less than 20,000 miles. The car handling is excellent for a vehicle of this size, acceleration is quick and with the upgraded tires wet weather handling is very firm. I was hit on the passenger side by a Ford F350 duel wheel pick-up with very little impact into the passenger compartment. The car is very sturdy. No passenger injuries at all. Unfortunately, it cost $8000. to repair my car, and took over a month to get the parts. I still consider this a great car for the price!
Great CAR
14K miles and 2 years with no problem. Fun to drive, very confortable. The V8 has more than enough power. Best looking car on the road.
Buyers Beware
While this is a beautiful looking vehicle, don't be fooled into buying or leasing for that matter. From day 1 we have encountered issues with electronical, steering, window motor, transmission, radiator, the battery and the list goes on. From driving down the freeway and having your trunk fly open to not being able to start the car on soo many occassions. What good is a beautiful looking vehicle if you can't trust what's under the hood?
s-type
Great car to drive. Handles well except on snowy roads. Fuel mileage not great. Inside configuration is well designed. Excellent pick-up.
Beautiful But Don't Go There
I've made 17 trips to the dealership for warranty work. Over 1% of the mileage accrued was logged on trips to and from the dealership. To date I've spent almost two work weeks of time due to dealer visits. The check engine light has been on for 1/2 of the 45,000 miles logged. A window fell out. Wheel bearings shot. Goofy radio that came on of its own volition. Transmission defect.Sensors failed. If you are lonely and seek human interaction buy a Jaguar 2000 S Type 4.0. You will get loads of human interaction at the dealership because you'll visit the folks there frequently. Also be prepared for multiple dealership visits for the same problem.
A Beautiful Find
This is perhaps the best looking sedan ever made. The four round headlights and complimenting hood, surrounding a classic "tennis racket" shaped grille are distinct and perfect. The stance of the car makes it look ready to pounce. Pounce it does, with the powerful, smooth and modern 8. Jag got all the compromises right. Ride quality and handling are both superb without a bias toward one at expense of the other. The handling will greatly satisfy but the ride pampers, not punish. The power of the engine is always more than adequate, without need for high reving hysteria. Best, the Jag is as sexy as a sports coupe but works very well as a family sedan. Classic look and quality will age well.
Jaguar 2000 S Type
Total reliability for 5 years. Poor gas mileage (13 mpg) in town, driving up and down hilly streets, but 28 mpg on the highway.
Massive value in luxury sedan segment
Awesome blend of styling, quality, features, performance, luxury, comfort, and reliability. Jaguar's somewhat tainted track record of years past is no more; product quality and reliability has improved drastically since the buyout by Ford.
looks great but repair happy
My s-type gets rave reviews for style and performance. But the car has many bugs (dashboard, trunk problems, transmission, engine computer, etc). Will sell it as soon as warranty runs out. Can't afford the $54 oil changes, $10 windshield fluid, $50 wipers, and $900 30,000 mile checkup!!
ccjag
great car fun to drive
