2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL-T 4dr Crew Cab AWD SB (3.5L 6cyl 6A)

In the summer of 2018 the truck started having warning lights coming on in the instrument cluster. At one time ALL the lights came on (red, blue, yellow etc). I took it to the dealer at least 3 times and Honda just would NOT step up to the plate and fix it. No one at the dealership was really concerned UNTIL I imploded in the middle of the sales room floor on one visit. Then they were ready to look into the problems with my truck. It was there for quite a while and the wiring problem required removing the bed from the truck and I believe replacing the wiring harness from the cab back. Comfort and ease of getting in and out of the truck is a great feature but reliability is more important. NO MORE HONDA'S FOR ME, we went back to Toyota.

2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL-T 4dr Crew Cab AWD SB (3.5L 6cyl 6A)

I traded a 2012 RTL that I liked a lot and the 2017 is a step up. Most of the negatives of the previous generation Ridgeline have been addressed, Here goes the pluses: 1)The MPG is great, first tank of HWY driving I averaged 27. 2)The quiet of the cab is impressive, better than most cars. 3)The seats are all day comfortable and 4)the ride is serene. 5)It goes straight down the road. 6)It is much quicker than my 2012, much. So, it is a home run, but a few things keep it from being a grand slam. Here goes my reasoning: 1)Why no Michelin tires? Firestone Destinations are just OK. 2)The armrests are small and cheap looking. For the price there should be a 3) electric rear window, 4) sunroof and 5) presets for two drivers. 6)Plus the dull black trim between the front and back windows beg for chrome trim to match the rest of the window trim. The styling is a "beauty is in the eyes of the beholder issue" so I'll not add my opinion, but the San Marino red color would make it pop. November 2018 Update: (I was blasted from behind while sitting at a stop light by a driver going 40 mph +/- who was "not" texting so this review is on a replacement Ridgeline) Last three tanks of gas yielded: 23.7, 22.5 and 23.1 mpg. This was a 60/40 HWY/City blend of driving. Negatives: Replaced vinyl at bottom of driver door as it was loose. Want San Marino red availability and the fold down driver and passenger armrests are still too flimsy. I have had no mechanical problems other than the Honda dealer changed oil which resulted in oil dripping on my garage floor. (Not the Ridgeline's fault but thought I'd share). Every time my I phone has an update (??) I have to re synch my phone to the Ridgeline. It ain't easy and involves receiving an email with a code. What a pain..... Moving on to positives: I am able to pull my boat weighing about 3000 lbs no problem. It is still really quiet with no rattles or noises. Carries 1000 lb loads of 12' deck boards perfectly by lowering tailgate and putting one strap over top of load. Tires show minimal wear so my previous Firestone tire complaint may be unwarranted. Other than that the truck seems to be as good as new. May 2020: Ridgeline continues on. Other than tire wear and routine oil changes I just drive it. Pluses I mentioned earlier continue but I am annoyed by the substandard infotainmment system that usually refuses to pair with my phone. It just wont......I have to start a call from my phone before the truck will pick recognize my phone. What a pain. Come on Honda it isn’t 2010 anymore! I am thinking of upgrading to an RTL-E but am waiting til Honda fixes this issue. MPG averages 23 fill to fill. And where is the San Marino red color option????? OK it is 11/28/20 and I have 36K on the Ridgeline, it has been near flawless other than the tech issues. I am thinking of a 21 but worry that that if I trade the 21 will have more issues than my 17. Anyway, I continue to average 23 mpg fill to fill, have 8/32nds left on the tires and that's about it. It is still quiet and free of rattles. Maybe trading isn't such a good idea. May 31, 2021. 41K miles, tires are still the originals but although they are not down to the wear bars they are loud with poor ride quality so they should be gone. RL is still great driving, mpg averages 23 with occasional hwy trips as high as 28. (downhill both ways). Infotainment system stinks as it is Oh So Slow and updating the Nav is such a pain I dont use it. (I use my cell phone instead). When will car manufacturers just use cell phone tech for nav and give up doing their own thing? Other than that it drives well. I am thinking of trading for a new RL but am not sure why. June 1, 2022: RL just keeps on ticking. No issues other than previous ones noted so I don't need a new one. Today, it has 48,024 miles with minimal issues. I put on Michelin LTX tires at 44,000. Not sure why I went to Michelin as I have to admit that although I was skeptical about the OE Firestone Destinations, they were just fine. My BAK tonneau cover has also aged well, actually it looks and works new. So I just do normal maintenance and drive. Dec '22 Update: Now have 52,000 miles on it. I have had no big mechanical breakdowns. My RL is still quiet, rattle free and I am feeling guilty as I have really had no maintenances done other than routine oil changes and new set of Michelin Defenders at 44K. I thought about having the tranny fluid changed but my brother talked me out of it - stating "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." It still has the original battery and spark plugs. I changed the engine and cabin air filters myself at a fraction of the dealer quoted price. Other than that I just drive it. I pull my 3500# boat with ease and still get about 23mpg fill to fill. Hwy mpg is more but cold weather mpg is less. Keep driving it is my thought for the future. June 1, 2023: 54,972 miles. Still running great but have noticed surging (?) when accelerating. Not sure what it is but I am starting my fix with 2 bottles of Techron fuel system cleaner. Maybe I am dreaming as I read of kinds of tranny issues and notice some unpublic Honda quiet warranty on fuel injector problems. I hesitate to take it to the dealer as I don't want them going on a fix fishing trip with my billfold. Other than that everything I previously wrote continues, MPG averaging around 23 for all driving, same battery (I know I should replace it with a new one but I am cheap), I replace air and cabin filters myself and that's about it. The BAK cover is great and still looks like new. The Michelin LTXs I put on at 44,000 are great and look like they will outlast me. I consider trading but then read all the internet chatter of new RL model troubles, so I don't want to get something that isn't as good as what I got. Dec 2, 2023: 59,000 miles. Since my last update I had the tranny fluid changed due to the juddering issue. Honda paid for it. TX Honda. It fixed that issue. Fixed it....no more problems. So, other than my previously stated slow/outdated infotainment comments that continue I am a happy owner. I still have the original battery - I know I should change it but it just keeps working perfectly so... Quiet, 23mpg average, comfortable have caused me NOT to trade for a new RL. I read about so many issues on new models that I have decided to drive my '17. If crap happens, it's gotta be cheaper to just fix it. Right? Dec 4, 2024 Update: RL now has 68,145 miles. I still have the original battery and spark plugs. I just rotate tires, change cabin and engine air filters and change the oil/filter. I have grown used to the slow infotainment system so I don't notice it much until I get the screen warning that the NAV system is outdated. Yes, it is but updating it is such a pain I use my phone if I suspect a problem. Otherwise I still get about 24 mpg summer and 21 winter in all driving fill to fill. It still is quiet but the Michelins now have 24k on them and they are getting a bit loud but that's not a RL problem. I had fluids changed so I think it is cheaper to keep driving this RL than to buy a new one. Maybe I will wait to trade until the new body style RL comes out.

A Truck for a SUV Guy

Udpdate: It has been 24 months and it is still one of my favorite vehicles. Nothing but praise for this vehicle! Update: it has been appropriately 18 months and the Ridgeline is still one of my favorite vehicles that I have ever owned. I was not looking for a truck when I found the Ridgeline. I thought I would replace my Pilot with another SUV. My son had a Tacoma and complained about the rough truck ride so I did not think I would like a truck. I test drove the Ridgeline and found it drove as smoothly as an SUB. The rear seat was roomy and comfortable. I loved the trunk feature and the side opening tailgate. People I work with are impressed and are considering purchasing other Ridgelines. This was a great purchase and I would recommend a Ridgeline to a friend.

2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL-E 4dr Crew Cab AWD SB (3.5L 6cyl 6A)

The redesigned 2017 Honda Ridgeline is a significant improvement over the previous design. I previously owned a 2006 and 2011 Ridgeline, but left Honda three years ago to another brand (GMC) due in large part to the prior outdated design, old technology (really, no USB port?), etc. The new Ridgeline has fixed the problems of the past with much improved technology, better sound system, modern design, quiet ride and comfortable handling. The safety features (RTL-E) are impressive, perhaps redundant (Lane Keeping Assist vs. Road Departure Mitigation systems). Very pleased with combined city/highway milage (23-24), the ability to put the engine in ECO setting to shut down 2 cylinders when cruising is useful on long trips. Some new things are gimmicky (A/C outlet for tailgating tv and bed sound system) but overall it has received many looks and compliments, decent towing and AWD for our rural location. Update Aug 2019 After 3 years of ownership, I turned 50,000 miles last week. The Ridgeline is still the best mid-size truck in the market. The ride is exceptional whether the bed is empty or hauling firewood in the back. No problem towing a 4100 lb trailer on vacation. It still looks great, and I regularly get compliments and questions from people when gassing up or stopping for lunch. The only mechanical issue I experienced was a persistent on-and -off "Emissions Control Problem" warning light at 38,000 miles. diagnosed as a problem with fuel injectors. When it didn't correct after adding a few Gumout injector cleaners when filling up, the dealer initially reset the computer emission parameters under the service bulletin and under warranty. But the problem reappeared 3-4 months later, and due to the location and need to replace all of the injectors, the dealer quoted a repair price of $1500. The Honda Zone Manager initially refused to extend the warranty as the warranty period had passed. But after appealing to Honda corporate with the help of my dealer, they approved replacement of the injectors under a warranty extension since it initially appeared under the warranty milage limit...and apparently this is becoming a more common problem. The service manager recommended using a top tier premium fuel at least once every 4-5 fill-ups, and the problem has not recurred in 5000 miles.

From '16 Tacoma to '17 Ridgeline

People ask me why I switched from the Tacoma to the Ridgeline. Well, the Ridgeline just does everything better except for hard core off-roading. The seats are more comfortable, it's quieter, handles better, fuel economy is better and is just easier to live with on a daily basis. Having driven 3 VW GTIs for the last 10 years, my bride and I decided we wanted to explore the good 'ol USA and, after MUCH research we bought a Lance 1475 TT ( 3600 lb GVW) . A GTI is not known for its towing abilities so a pick-up was up next. The Tacoma has a sterling reputation and the refreshed one was just out. Test drive revealed that, yes, it is a pick-up with the appropriate capabilities we needed. It was not particularly comfortable or quiet but it is a pick-up, after all. This past summer, after owning the Tacoma for 4 months I saw that the new Ridgeline was out and was curious about it. Did not really think it was a contender for what my usages are (75% commuting, 300 mi wk, 25% towing). The local dealer finally had one on the lot, so I stopped and took a look-see. Nice, but not the burly styled ride the Tacoma is. A little later another one showed up. I was still curious so I stopped in and took a test drive. Big, BIG mistake! If I had known that this pick-up was coming out at the same time I was looking at the Tacoma, it would not have even been considered. As far as towing goes, they both do a fine job but the Ridgeline is just better in-spite of the lower tow rating. One interesting thing to mention is the Tacoma had a payload rating of 956 lbs while the Ridgeline had a payload of 1397 lbs.
