It goes and goes. >200000 miles and nary a problem. Front R axle broke at 201K (without warning, a little disturbing), but otherwise looks (from the outside) and drives like new. Original clutch, shifts without problems. Carpet interior is thin and wears quickly but new floor carpet mats made me feel like it was a new car. Not much "tech" but a cellphone with an auxillary jack is better than most car company proprietary tech. Engine could easily go another 100K miles. Can't keep up with Mercedes AMG but drives like a go-cart in traffic. INterior space is incredible and seat folding system is brilliant. Everyone should have to buy this car-no reason to own any other. Update: Still going strong 220k. A right frontal axle failed about 200k. AC compressor, fan replaced about 205k. I think the drive train could easily make 300k. Update: 235K miles, no issues whatsoever. Original clutch, drive train. Essentially no body rust. The only thing that's "worn out" is the carpet on the floor. One of the great, and under appreciated joys of driving is driving a small, compact, manual car thru traffic. Working the gears, and zipping past all the BMWs , MBs, Audis. Great fun!

I bought my 09 Fit Sport MT new and have put +110k miles on with no repairs beyond preventative maintenance. The car has delivered on all the reasons that I purchased it for: very low cost of ownership, fun to drive, TONS of cargo space (with rear seats flat), and great mileage (38-40mpg). The car has handled west MI winters well, even before I purchased snow tires. Build quality has been good, although some plastic interior panels are beginning to get loose. I recommend switching from the stock tires as soon as they wear out. Overall, no complaints. The car has been a champ, and I expect it will continue to well past 200k.

Crazy Reliable! 40 mpg!!!

Bought this car with just a few miles on her and have gotten to 165,000 now without a single issue. I have replaced the brakes and tires and that's IT! I love my girl. I have the manual because of the wee engine and she's a champ. I really cannot recommend this car enough. If you want a reliable vehicle then this one is for you. My mechanic says these go forever and I can say shows no sign of slowing down. I'm not crazy about the interior materials, but I knew that when I bought her. There is wear on the floor carpet and that bugs me because I haven't been that hard on her - just loads of miles - so I can say that the interior carpet is cheap, but otherwise she ROCKS. I regularly get between 35-40 miles per gallon combined and almost always 40 mpg on the highway.

I purchased the 2009 Fit Sport in 2011 with 44k miles on it. We were coming out of the recession, so I thought I would try a fuel efficient small car for my job, which is a lot of highway driving. A couple thoughts: The MPG meter exaggerated the gas mileage a bit. the meter read 36.6 over 10,000 miles, the calculator said 32.35 for the same time period. I had a black exterior and interior. The combination of the big black dash along with all the glass allowed a lot of heat in the car. The air conditioning is set to cycle the compressor on and off during driving to save fuel, made it very hard to keep cool on hot days. Added an official Honda center console, very much worth the money.

Seats are NOT a problem

I almost didn't buy my Fit based on reviewers complaining about the seats. I decided to chance it for a $4000 used car and I'm so glad I did. The seats are much more comfortable than my odyssey seats! I'm 5'1" and the seats feel like they were made just for me. I have a spinal fusion at L5-S1 and currently have a spondylolethesis at L4-L5. I commute 1hr one way for a 2hr commute and I have no problems whatsoever. My odyssey seats cause thigh cramping on long commutes but I've had no issues in my Fit. Love this little car!

Previously, I owned a Nissan sentra with which I was very happy for 20 yrs. (yes!). Finally decided it was time for a new car. Researched well. Drove the versa, yaris and fit. Loved the fit. Handled like a sports car and was very comfortable with many safety features not standard on the others. Interior is very thoughtfully designed, with many little 'holders' for various things.

Didn't think we would like the Fit seeing as we are more SUV people and it was a little 4 cyl. This little fit has surprised us with it's good fuel mileage and it's spunk. It is a peppy car that is fun to drive. I love the back seats how they fold down and how the car doesn't feel cheap like some other cars. I have driven a 2016 Kia Soul, 2015 Chevy Equinox, 2015 Toyota Camry, & a 2015 Nissan Altima for rentals. All very different cars, but definitely like our Fit the best. It just feels better quality and is more fun to drive. The seats are more comfortable in the Fit as well. The only down side is that it could use more room, but it is meant to be a small car. Really though, compared to other small cars like it, it has the most room and cargo space. It has been very reliable for us and we are very pleased! I also appreciate that it's style and interior is still updated even being a 2009. The only thing we had to replace has been the ignition switch, so we have one key to open the doors and another to drive the car, but no biggie.

with 2000 miles on it. Have driven for 4000 miles. Very bumpy; plastic interior easy to scratch; good room in the back. Big complaint is that the floor on the driver's side is cheap plastic and the rug keeps running up into the gas pedal! Put down heavier mat but doesn't help. Feel I need to merge into freeway traffic very carefully because of lack of power. OK gas mileage but the reader lies for sure. Our Matrix does as well or better and it's a larger car with a better engine. Thinking about trading it in--big disappointment.

We bought this car because we were looking for a newer model within our price range. We needed a car that would be reliable and could accommodate a child seat. We loved the look of the exterior of the Fit and its safety features. The car drives great, handles with a sporty ride. Seats are nothing fancy, but still comfy and durable. We can fit my son's car seat in if he is forward-facing, or rear-facing with myself in front of him. My husband is 6 ft 2" and cannot sit in front of my son's car seat when it is rear-facing and positioned behind the driver seat. The car seat cannot be put in the center seat.

Best option for purchase in 2009 compared to other models at similar price. Occasional acceleration issues, front bumper is too low, scrapes the driveway curb a lot. 2016 model seems to have addressed acceleration as well as height of front for scraping; also back up camera safety feature

It's a Honda, reliable and fun to drive!

04/20/17 - This is a small car so there is a little bit of road noise, it has a 4cyl so acceleration is OK by yourself or with a kid in the car but with 4 full grown adults you better give some extra time for entering the highway. Like all Hondas of this size uphill acceleration with adults in the car will be a bit challenged. But that's all the bad news - I did have 2 recalls (free of charge at any dealer), one was an engine issue (by notice - car never broke down) the other was the tanaka air bags - if you buy this car used make sure the airbags were done. Also - definitely seek out the sport model as the standard does not have cruise. So, driving this car is a bit stiff but a lot of fun, VERY responsive, I have avoided more than one accident (getting cut off by other driver) due to the responsiveness. One of the requirements is the car come with the Dunlop rubber all around - these tires grip like no other I have ever experienced - even in the rain with new treads I can take a 90 degree turn as if it is dry! There are a dozen ways to arrange the seating so you can fit a bunch of different stuff in the car (some of which only when you are solo) for me it's great for a gig with amps and guitars etc... but also hauling wood from home depot or a kayak! Overall the car is great - I just passed 150,000 miles with just standarad maintenance and REGULAR oil changes - there is also a great support group Fit Freak on the internet that has a ton of help users in the forum when you do have a question. As far as gas - It's a 2009 and I am still getting 27.4mpg on the included road computer. Also has a USB input for your smart phone! Highly recommend - but I am a Honda lover - last one had over 250K miles. Lucked out and got it as part the Gas Guzzler return so we saved 4500.00 of MSRP!

As an owner of 15 or so Hondas, from CRV's to S-2000's, I feel qualified to evaluate the Honda Fit. For the price, a bargain. Fun to drive, extremely maneuverable, very good mileage. Comfy seat, excellent outward visibility. Best manualshift quality ever. On the down side...the way the interior is configured affects the suspension design so there is little rear suspension travel which leads to a bumpy, sometimes shocking rear suspension whams. I would not recommend the car, at least the Sport model to anyone who normally travels on dirt or low quality roads. That said I love the car and am amazed at the eagerness of the engine, especially on the freeway.

Design Defects Cost Owners Money!

Love the car - or DID, until the repairs started coming up. Fog Lights have zero protection - BOTH were broken by stones at 15k miles, at $180 EACH to replace. At 22,685 miles, I'm stuck with a $900 A/C condenser replacement, caused by "road debris," not covered under warranty. A little Internet research shows this is a very common problem caused by defective design - huge holes in the lower grille allow large stones or debris to pass through, and the low clearance makes the condenser extremely vulnerable to damage. Honda should issue a recall to deal with the problem. Instead, they deny there is a problem, sticking their customers with the expense. Unfortunate - my last Honda.

I was extremely unhappy with my PT Cruiser (*ahem* PT LOSER) and did a LOT of research on the Fit and comparable vehicles. I test drove the Fit, Yaris, Cube, and Versa. I even drove the Yaris for 2 days while deciding. But after those 2 days, the decision was easy. The Fit by FAR blew the competition away. I have DOUBLED my mpg over the PT. Cargo space is amazing, and have easily fit my two large greyhounds, and last week a 6 foot industrial clothing rack. Have put 1800 miles on it in about a month. Fit also made list of greenest cars. Drove over a nail this week and the TPMS alerted me to low tire pressure. Now I look forward to driving every day, instead of wondering if my car will start!

I traded my 2007 Mazda 3 hatch M in for the fit. I have to say I like this car much more. In every day driving this car puts a bigger smile on my face. Obviously you can't push it as hard and when passing on the highway the Mazda was far superior. Seriously though, this car just makes you smile every time you get in it. If you can drive a manual car this is so fun to shift and smooth with a little practice. The ride is smooth for a car of this class Engine noise is a bit loud at high revs, and wind noise is a slightly intrusive at highway speeds but never punishing. I forgot how fun it is to drive a small low powered car hard.

Bought 2009 fit in 2011, have put on 45K miles. Am 6'3", visibility is difficult, due to rear view mirror, door frame in field of vision when making turns, reflection of dashboard on window. I have a piece of black carpet on dashboard to compensate. Uncomfortable due to non-telescoping steering wheel, head rest too far forward, back rest concave in the wrong place--need to use back support. Have to tilt steering down in order to see upper part of speedometer. After 45 minutes, seat is very, very uncomfortable. Hard to steer, always over correcting on winding roads, especially at 45 mph+, maybe due to placement of engine on front axis? Needed steering wheel cover to ease grip.

Dear future Fit owners! You know, they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Well, its true! Two friends of mine have bought a Honda Fit in the last 2 years because of how much I have raved about mine! Honda should pay ME a royalty! LOL! All you have to do is open the door, get in the gi-normous cabin, turn it on & drive away- you'll be hooked! If you don't have a traffic-filled commute, get the 5- speed, the power is significantly better than the automatic. My bighearted little purple girl is perfect anywhere, anytime. Fast getting on the freeway, awesome going up mountain roads, great in the snow, and boy, so light that it flies watch out, you'll be doing 85 & not realize it

I've had this fit sport over a year, only racked up 5000 miles. I love to drive it when the weather is nice. The first snow storm, tracked through the snow great but, didn't feel too confident the car is really light and it slid a few times. So parked it all winter and drove my awd car. On long drives prefer to drive my other car..not crazy about the road noise and slow acceleration. But the car is great for city driving and parallel parking is a breeze, but its deceptive in that i think i'm always close to the car behind/front of me but in reality I'm pretty far. Overall I love the car, but its not my first choice if I'm going on a long trip.

My previous car was a 2000 Saturn and that car gave me decent mileage about 30mpg the fit is getting me 37 combined city and highway. The Saturn got me used to small car driving and Honda just makes me want to drive small cars. I dont drive far to work but the nearest mall is an hour away and thats when all features kick in. Love the ipod interface. Love the Navigation. Love the controls at the wheel. Im 6 '1 and I feel that have more than enough space in the front seats. If your looking for the bang for your buck look no futher. If you mind spending an extra 10k look at the Toyota Camary.

I had a 2007 fit and I loved the fast pickup, but the ride was not that great and the car started to shake at about 65 or 70 mph. I bought the 2009 and the ride is much better, but unfortunately, there is no pickup and a lack of passing power. I always was a Honda girl, but now looking to change. Spent all that extra money for navigation with no traffic.

This car certainly treated me well over the years. It was dependable and was a workhorse. It my be small on the outside but I believe it has one of the largest hauling capacity of just about any car on the market today. The newer models have many added features at a great price point. This car surely deserves a second look.

I purchased a Honda Fit Sport with the 5 speed manual gear box and overall it's a very solid car but I traded it in for the following reasons.. The steering is way too quick and downright squirrely at highway speeds.. Around town it's not really a problem but on the highway it's annoying. You're constantly keeping the car on track. Secondly, at highway speeds it seems to be very susceptible to crosswinds because of its weight and body design. I would have to white knuckle the thing going on long trips with it. Lastly, it's geared too short. You're constantly shifting and the engine drones at highway speeds. Traded up to a civic ex coupe. I wouldn't advise buying this car at all.

I am a high-spirited driver and drive 110 miles one-way to work, so needed a fuel efficient car that had zip. 10,000+ miles already since June 2008. Depending on my driving habits, I average 40+ highway/35 mixed (highest was 52 MPG for one trip at 60 MPH!). This car has great acceleration when you punch it for entering traffic and passing, but don't expect a rocket car. Maneuverability is excellent, although real tight cornering causes the back end to sway. The seats are not very comfortable for long distances, but I generally like the interior styling. Visibility is excellent, with nice large side mirrors. Nice rear seat flexibility for transporting my big dog and cargo. Great car overall!

I test drove a Fiesta and ended up with the Fit. The main factor in favor of the Fit was that it feels like a much bigger car on the inside. The Fiesta hatchback is claustrophobic and is tough to see out the back window. The Fiesta is quieter and has more bells and whistles (Sync). But the Fit has a much more flexible interior. I drive 50/50 highway/city and so far am averaging about 36 mpg. Mostly use to commute but can also fit my (2) kids and all their soccer gear. With one rear seat folded down I fit 4, 6ft soccer goals inside. Manual Shifter is great, and IPod/USB integration is nice. Also I was able to buy it used at a great price while the Fiesta is still new.

As of today it shows that my MPG avg from the day I bought is 40.0 MPG.It runs better than any car I have ever owned. And I have owned a lot of them .I bought my first car in 1946. It was a 1934 ford. If it wasn't for the Cash for Clunkers Program I would still be driving my old van getting around 17 MPG and it being in the repair shop too much.

Do not believe the hype. The engine is buzzy and the transmission hunts for the right gear. The ride is extremely bumpy, you feel everything. The seats are uncomfortable, and can't be height adjusted. You would never take this on a trip longer than 25 miles. It has beautiful styling, but that's all. A huge disappointment that I bought into because of all of the raves from the so-called car experts. I'm trading this in on a larger and more comfortable car.

I could not be more in love with my little Honda Fit. It is a 2009 and I bought it brand new with only 25 actual miles. It is now 2021 and has 252,000 miles and the only work I have done is ac just now. One tune up and regular oil changes. A few batteries and some tires. This car is my best friend. It carries everything and is always ready to go!

Good in some areas, bad in others

I bought this car because I wanted something that could give me a lot of room and get good MPG. I got exactly that in the '09 Fit and not much else. PROS: cargo is great--fold flat (and I mean FLAT) rear seats are awesome, Honda's "magic seat" is very useful, love the hatch in the back--will never go back to a sedan, plenty of cupholders and small cubbies, handling is tight and agile, fun to drive around town with no weight in car. CONS: interior is 100% cheap, hard plastic with exception of leather wrapped steering wheel, seats are hard and unforgiving, acceleration is very bad--struggles to pass other cars or go up hills especially if there are passengers in the car, torque isn't great, car does not sustain acceleration at high speeds, A/C struggles mightily in extreme dry heat/sunlight or humidity--have been told the compressor is too small and the hood and cabin are too large to properly cool the vehicle. Struggles in adverse weather due to ~5 inches of ground clearance, (adverse weather) like....rain or...snow or...wind...it is a car that simply isn't designed well enough to drive and thrive in many areas of the country. Would I recommend this car? Yes, depending on where you live and what you need it for. Would I buy this car again? No. My priorities have changed and the car no longer fits my needs...and I miss being able to give a car gas without the engine nearly falling out on the road...

I've had my Fit for about 4-5 months now and love it. I bought it with about 30k miles on it and have put about 10k on it since. I love the roominess of the fit compared to other compact cars, in both the front and back seats. I love the hatchback and the way the rear seats can fold both down or up. I drive mostly highway miles and have been averaging 38+ mpg. My car had a remote car starter installed which has also worked great.

Thought I'd try this car since Toyota was having all their issues. Big mistake. Everything in the car is plastic, it hydroplanes, and you can blow on the carpet and it shimmers. Went back to a solid car, Toyota. Also this dealership is awful.

Pleased with this car so far but have only owned it since July 27,2009. I have put 225 miles on it as of today July 31. My excitement over owning my first new car is fading very quickly (haven't made 1st payt. yet) as of today I am starting to see small paint chips come off the hatchback door. You can see white base/primer coat where the blue paint use to be. So far I have counted 9 different spots. They are aprox. the size of a match head. As I was washing it today a chip of paint aprox. 1/4" wide by 3/4" long came off as I was wiping the water off by the driver's side door, down by the front qtr. panel trailing edge. Also noticed a lot of water allowed between doors and bottom sills.

Update after 660 miles trip

Addition to my previous review after 600+ trip on mostly flat road. Fuel economy got to 41.2mpg (car gauge)/38mpg (actual) with 3 adults and a kid and a full load of cargo with running a/c and a speed between 70 and 80m/h. As somebody else mentioned already, ride is very harsh over any kind of road irregularities. This little thing can hold its own at 80m/h without much stress and very stable on a road.

I bought my Fit almost a year ago so have had plenty of time to think about it and reflect on my purchase. At first sight I liked the color and enjoyed the interior features such as the magic seats and navigation system. After having driven it over 6000 miles now I regret to say that if I could go back I would pick a different vehicle. Driver is uncomfortable on long drive with very little back support and small arm rests. front passenger has no arm rest at all. Over all the car was worth the small price, but next time spend a little more and get something better. Sorry Honda, not one of your best models over all. Oh and p.s. honda, teach your sales reps more about the fit. misleading.

Compared to and test drove Mini Cooper, Mini Clubman, Scion D etc. to replace a 1986 Toyota 4 wheel drive x'tra cab pick-up used for personal and small real estate business. With back seats down it works well to transport my mutts and for business. Did not like "paddle shifting"; standard is very responsive. Had dealer install moon-roof similar to those on accords and it is fabulous. Get all the rubber floor trays. Navigation system very useful and stability control makes my wife feel safe. Also got Plexiglas strips on doors for shade and rain protection as well as fancy door strips and a black rear bumper protector strip--all the bells and whistles.

I used this site repeatedly when deciding on which car to buy, so I feel obliged to give my opinion on a car that I contemplated for 2 years. After 3,500mi I haven't been disappointed. I am a 6'3" caterer. The car provides more usable space than my wife's Toyota Sienna. Great stereo. Turns on a dime. My first tank of gas gave me 38 mpg. Since then it has ranged from 32 to 38. I love the navigation and instrument panel. The only complaint I have is that the front end is a bit low and you need to be careful not to scrape the bottom when backing off a steep incline onto level ground. Otherwise it's been the perfect vehicle for urban/suburban driving.

Fun / Reliable Commuter

I have owned Acura, Toyota, Volvo, BMW, and Mazda and this has been the most reliable vehicle (the BMW was a lot of fun, but ...$$$). I drive 25K miles/yr. When I bought my 2009 Fit Sport it had 1,500 miles and now has more than 230K miles and is still going strong. I am planning to give this car to my son as a first car. He actually enjoys driving the Fit over our Acura MDX. Maintenance has consisted of routine fluid changes, tires, and breaks; that’s it. In this time I have DYI remodeled two homes and the Fit is true to its name. As far as comfort I agree that the ‘09 seats could use some improvement, but I find the seats perfectly good for commutes less than 2 hours (we use the MDX for family trips. I believe newer models have improved the seats. If you want a great all around reliable and fun vehicle the Fit in my mind is the best car on the market, and has the lowest cost of ownership.

my fit is currently at 181,000. so far, i have done routine oil changes, tune ups for fluids, changed the trans fluid about 4 times, and other small maintenance such as replacing the heat shield, replacing the valve cover gasket seal, putting in new bulbs, etc. i haven’t had a major problem, and all repair fees have been pretty low. the engine seems durable and safety is a PLUS with airbags all around the car and good crash ratings.

I did a good amount of research on the Fit before getting it. I knew going into it that the sport suspension was going to be great for driving, but rough on unforgiving roads. The same goes for the motor. I knew that the Fit did not produce a lot of horsepower. For what it is given, it is fun to drive. It is the right amount of power for a single driver who wants to push it on the local interstate. Storage on the Fit is prefect for the size of the car. As long as you know you can't try to fit a mattress into a Fit. Lastly, I suggest spending a little extra and get the Mugen and Sport add ons. It helps make the little guy stick out among the other Fits on the road.

I've had my Fit for 10 years and put over 160K miles on it as an Amazon Flex Driver. My car handled rural delivers on gravel driveways and steep hills in the snow, rain and dark better than I would have walking the same roads. It could get tricky since the car is lower on its wheels than a vehicle built for off-roading but it always handled these situations surprisingly well. I was in two separate serious accidents and I wasn't injured at all. Not even back or neck pain. I trust this vehicle with my life.

My Honda Fits Fine!

Began my love relationship with Fit in May '09. Many years with VWs, but Fit feels more spacious. Easy driving. Small enough to fit anywhere. Designed sharp enough to be noticed. Never want to be without a GPS again; so much fun to enjoy the scenery rather than having to remember landmarks. Loads of space and places to put drinks, eyeglasses, etc. Wide windshield and extra side windows feels like being in a tour bus. Great visibility. Road ride is fine; no worse than any other cars. GREAT gas mileage! The flexibility of the seats is a HUGE plus. Sadly I was totaled last week. Entire front end gone, but not me or my cat. Air bag worked. Nothing penetrated the cabin! Looking for a new Fit.

The concept of this car is perfect. Hatch, small, efficient, stability control. My main complaint is that the suspension is way too harsh. Not firm, which is OK, but harsh. You feel EVERY road flaw. The MPG is averaging 30, mediocre for a car with this modest level of power and performance. The transmission constantly shifts on even small grades, annoying. Handling is excellent. Very roomy and versatile. Excellent interior. My VW pickup rides better. Don't buy one until you put on 50 continuous miles on a concrete highway and broken city streets. If you can live with the incessant jittery ride and average MPG, very strong in other areas. I'll be trading on a Civic or Mazda 3 soon.

I have to be honest . Its a car that I give 5 stars to from the standpoint of reliability ,which is the only similarity to my Honda motorcycles . Other than that its so slow it can get out of its own way . I am not being mean I just think that on my numerous trips to Japan thats where this cars belongs . It dosent handle in any inspiring way and have had the front assembly pop out on small curbs that I thought I barley creased? But I hung this pup into a turn that I was following others through and it felt like it was about to roll over . And it looks like a Mini-van lacking steriods . I sold it because I need to redline it thru every gear when going 2 work getting on the fwy. too embarrasi

I wanted the Insight but the Fit was roomier and cheaper. I had to pay the extra for the sport of course as the base didn't have cruise or keyless entry. I like the styling, roominess and the magic seat. Reviewers have said the mpg calculator is optimistic to the tune of 2 or 3 mpg, yikes! that means I'm only getting 26 mpg around town and I don't even have a lead foot so I can't really praise the fuel economy in my case. The thing that bugs me most about it is the low front clearance, my son pulled out of the drive and pulled out the front body panel. I was able to push most of it back in but it has popped back out several times since, when there's a dip in the road and now it's all scraped

60" tv in the box fit flat in the back of the car with the back seats down. Nearly 48" height with the back seats folded down. This car absolutely swallows up massive amounts of stuff in back. Great handling (though noisy) with nice pep most of the time. Excellent vision out of all windows except for an area around the side window pillars. Very economical to buy and maintain. I'm about ready to upgrade to a small luxury car (Audi A3), just wish I could find car like the A3 with the functionality of the Fit.
