The original Hummer remains an automotive icon as both a military vehicle that was available to the public and one of the most inefficient forms of modern transportation. Following in the original's tire tracks are the all-electric Hummer EV pickup that debuted in 2022 and the Hummer EV SUV introduced last year. They're larger than their predecessors, and despite having no tailpipe, they're not what anyone would consider "green." How does the GMC HUMMER EV SUV drive? Dubious naming aside, the Watts to Freedom (yes, WTF) launch control feature is undeniably absurd. With WTF engaged, the Hummer EV SUV ripped from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds in our testing. For a vehicle this large and heavy, that kind of acceleration is absolutely bonkers. When you mash the accelerator, the Hummer rears back and all you can see is sky. By the time the nose drops back down, you're moving at extra-legal speeds. It's an incredible sensation.

Other aspects of driving the Hummer EV SUV are less incredible. It leans heavily through turns, requiring a slow and steady hand. Fortunately, acceleration and braking are smooth, and it's easy to pilot the Hummer around town. On the highway, Super Cruise hands-free driving helps reduce the fatigue from trying to keep the big SUV centered in its lane. The surround-view camera system gives you clear views around the Hummer when parking.

Off-road, the Hummer EV SUV is a monster. The air suspension can create more than 16 inches of ground clearance, much more than even a Jeep Wrangler offers. Opting for the Extreme Off-Road package (as our test vehicle came with) adds serious mud-terrain tires and ample underbody protection.

Comfort

How comfortable is the GMC HUMMER EV SUV? The front seats are great, with plenty of side bolster support and ample cushioning for comfort on long drives. The driver's seat and steering wheel offer plenty of adjustment for finding a comfortable driving position. We're not crazy about the rough texture of the synthetic door and armrest materials, though. Given the Hummer EV SUV's size, the interior is surprisingly tight. It's still roomy enough for adults in the back seat, but headroom and legroom are more what you'd find in a midsize sedan than a big SUV. Car seat installation is a breeze, though, with ample room and easily accessed upper and lower seat anchors. The Hummer EV SUV is also easy to enter and exit thanks to the air suspension that lowers the height when parked.

Tri-zone climate control gives rear passengers more tailored temp control, and seat heating and ventilation work quickly, even if the fans are a little loud. They're not as loud as the big all-terrain tires or the wind noise and whine from the electric motors. The Hummer EV SUV is still quieter than most trucks, but not most EVs.

In-cabin tech

How’s the tech? The Hummer EV SUV has wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. Our phones connected quickly and easily in our testing. The 14-speaker Bose audio system is decent, but some of our editors expected better sound quality considering the vehicle's price. There are plenty of USB ports and a wireless charger to keep devices charged. There's also a household outlet in the back seat if you need to power something like a laptop or a game console.

How’s storage and cargo? The Hummer EV SUV's front trunk offers 11.3 cubic feet of space, but the space looks smaller than it could be and the power-operated hood takes forever to open. There's also no drain hole, which means you won't be transforming the frunk into an ice chest for tailgating parties. There's 35.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, which expands to 81.8 cubic feet with the seats folded. That's OK, but the Rivian R1S offers more. In-cabin storage for smaller items or more delicate cargo is also less than we'd expect. Bin space is decent, and there's sizable space below the center console between the driver and front passenger, but access isn't that easy.

Is the GMC HUMMER EV SUV a good value? Looking at the Hummer EV SUV objectively, its three electric motors and massive battery pack mean serious hardware costs from the start. The interior materials are also more rugged than chic, which makes it feel less worthy of its $100K-plus price. But if you find value in its performance and off-road capability, plus the fun conversation starters like rear-steer CrabWalk and underbody cameras, the Hummer's cost can feel justified.

How are the range and efficiency? Thanks to its giant battery, the Hummer EV SUV (like the pickup) can cover a lot of distance on a single charge. In the independent Edmunds EV Range Test, our test vehicle covered 325 miles on a full charge, more than its EPA-estimated range of 289 miles when equipped with the Extreme Off-Road package. That's the good news.

The bad news is that it's woefully inefficient. In our testing, the Hummer EV SUV consumed 62.6 kWh of electricity per 100 miles of driving. That's even worse than the 57.8 kWh/100 miles we recorded in the Hummer EV pickup. Nearly every other luxury EV will be more efficient and cost less to charge over time. Charging on road trips can also take a long time if you're stuck using a low-powered public charger.

The Hummer EV SUV's outlandish design is one of its strengths. It's a giant vehicle with giant specs and a giant personality. It gets noticed and we think the styling is spot-on for a modern electric Hummer. Its sheer width requires cautious driving anywhere except maybe Texas, but it's still pretty fun and manuevable thanks to rear-wheel steering. So many features, so much capability, and more cameras than you know what to do with. If you aren't buying the Hummer for fun, you're fooling yourself. Few things about it are practical.
