Good performance, good driving reliability, low cost maintenance. 2013 transmission had a slip, needed an overhaul.

I got this SE hatchback used in 2016 with 21k miles from original owner, now has 40k. The car is really the perfect car for commuting. The manual transmission is very smooth, fun to row through the gears and engine is adequate. Heard bad reviews on the automatic and glad to get the stick. The mpg is around 29 with mostly city driving and it's easy to park and looks sharp. Pros: value, seats are comfortable as is the driving position, fun to drive, good mpg. The minor quibbles: interior storage space is lacking, seat adjustment quirky, some plasticly parts on dash noisy. Since I got a great deal, I'm more than satisfied with car, but I'd gladly buy an updated version of this car with no hesitation. First American car for a long time, and I'm quite happy. Update: 51K miles and still running like new. super impressed with this little hatchback...it's stickshift SE model. It's a little tight for space as I always have alot of sports equipment. I have racks on top and the low roof is easy to load bikes. Only have replaced battery, front brakes and tires, very reliable so far.

So i never really looked at the reviews for my focus before i bought it. If i had to do this all over i probably wouldnt have purchased my car to begin with. The car has constant issues with the transmission (which the dealer says they cant fix). i have brought it in 3 seperate times and right off the bat the transmission and everything works fine, but with time it only gets worse and worse. Along with the VERY cramped backseat you mine as well go up a model and get the fusion. Car has incredible gas mileage with is probably the only upside about this car.

Best car I've owned so far

The 2013 Ford Focus hatchback has been the best car I've ever owned. I think it is getting a bad reputation here for the dual-clutch automatic manual transmission, which is easy to misunderstand as a "broken" automatic transmission. I enjoy it a lot and no issues with it after 114,000 miles. Things I like about the car include the stylish exterior and interior, comfortable seats, comfortable climate control, good visibility from the driver's seat, blind-spot side-view mirrors, decent sound system, and good acceleration in passing gear (assuming you can get the transmission to cooperate). Things I don't like about the car are the delays in shifting the automated manual when it doesn't engage the right secondary gear, lack of "sport mode" manual shift, connecting to Bluetooth audio (I must pull the voice command and say "Bluetooth Audio" every time I start the car), small screen, large and messy center console with an alpha-numeric keypad (?) instead of a larger screen, and no backup camera. It is an excellent car for an excellent value, not without fault, but I would recommend highly.

Ford can't fix it!

Drove it for 3.5 years before it died. Ford has had it in the shop for over 2 months, and now needs 3 more weeks to remove the EV battery, ship it to Detroit, get a repaired or replacement back and see if that fixes it. The way it died was scary - notice on dash said "pull over now". Stepped on accelerator and nothing happened. If I'd been on a busy freeway, I could have been in real trouble. I don't trust the car any more, but I can't get the stupid thing back from the shop to be able to sell it and get something I can trust. I will never own another Ford if there is any way I can help it.
