C-MAX BUMMER

I loved my c-max at first. Didn't mind the first time it went dead for no reason. I thought it was my fault. But after the third time...Come on Ford, stop making excuses. Now it is in the shop again and they tell me it is the transmission that has to be replaced! Really, only 30,000 miles in 1.5 years and I am driving a rental for the 4th time. I travel for a living. I want out of my lemon, but can't afford to trade off because of the upside down amount. Guess I am stuck.

Great Car but MPG?

I've had my C Max for about 2 months. I think the design of the car is good but the gas milage on the highway is a pipe dream. I can see where you could get 47 MPG in the city under certain conditions but no way will it ever get 47 on the highway. A more realistic gas milage would be around 37 MPG at 75 MPH, 38.5 MPH at 70. if your lucky you can get around 40 MPG at 65MPH basicly the same as a none hybrid car. I now have 4500 miles on the car a just came back from the first trip with the car. I could have done with out the SYNC it just don't work well. I have had one issure where all four windows came down and the car unlocked it's self. Fortunately I caught it before the rain got it.

The 2013 C-max is a great car to start out. I bought mine used, that came with some issues. March of 2020 after having the car for one year the engine started to misfire... no biggie. Took it to the shop and 1200 dollars later it was fixed. Ran great up until January of 2021. One day my radio stopped working. It would play music but wouldn’t allow me to change the volume at all... again no biggie, I was planning on taking it in to get it looked at. That same day I was 2 hours into a trip on the highway when my engine started to misfire again. Turned around and came home (very carefully). The engine on the way back stopped misfiring but the engine light remained on. A day later my car battery had died. Got jumped and the radio was functioning normally again. Took it into the shop and got the engine light fixed. Once more about 2 months later the radio stopped working and the battery died. Since January of 2021, at least once a month the engine starts to misfire again. Four times this year I’ve had the same issue with the car, each time it’s been fixed. I love the car. The gas mileage is great, it’s a good size, the car is very user friendly. I’ve just had a terrible experience mechanically. Recently I’ve made the tough decision to trade it in. Again, in the short time I had this car it really was a great little car... aside from all the issues with the engine.

I'm about 3000 miles in with 2 long road trips. My overall average is 40mpg, with the road trips coming in around 37mpg with my normal suburban commute averaging around 43mpg. The dropoff in mileage is pretty clear--the faster you go over 65, the mileage drops off a cliff (well into the low 30s). On the flipside, the C-Max loves 45-55 mph roads with stoplights. Fortunately, that's my normal commute. --- Updated in 2016: Now 35k miles in--mileage still great--right around 40 mpg. Ford did some tweaks that allowed more electric engine usage at higher speeds so it doesn't shift into gas mode so quickly. It hasn't seemed to affect the long term gas mileage for me. Some cons--the first year I had the C-Max, it had some weird battery draining issue (especially in cold weather) that killed the main battery when parked. They did some sort of software fix and the car has been fine since. Still love the car! Great commuter car.
