Ford Wonder Hybrid
Firstup, when I went to the dealership at Galpin, I had no intention of testing nor buying a CMax, the Ford Fusion was it. The Prius was considered but I did not like the performance nor the handling, yes, I understand performance-hybrid are oxymorons. The CMax blew me away as an overall package for my needs. Being a hybrid was a huge advantage for my line of work where I drive alot, the interior space allowed me carry all my fun toys on the weekend snow trips, the Sync system rocks especially the Sony surround sound, SYNC Nav is nice with the big easy to see screen at a glance.
Fun to Drive, But There Are Problems........
The C-Max has great interior design, a good sound system, handles well and seems roomy, but there are nagging problems that drag down the car. Like another reviewer, my clock just randomly changes time. The car also randomly starts itself which is a little disconcerting. The cruise control does not throttle back when going downhill so on a long, steep hill you can end up going 20 - 25 MPH over the speed you set. I think that is a dangerous defect, although not sure if I just have a defective cruise control or this is a problem with all C-Max cruise controls.
First Impressions
Took delivery of vehicle yesterday. Acceleration definitely adequate for entering busy main roads. This was a major reason I chose this car over the Prius, a 50 horsepower advantage makes a big difference. Very quiet inside - active noise cancellation works. Gave reliability a 4, but I can't really comment on this from my first day with the car. Fit and finish are excellent. Extremely easy to sync phone with the dash system via bluetooth.
Very Dissappointed
I have now owned a 2013 Ford C-Max for exactly 3 months, and I am not at all happy with my purchase. Like most C-Max owners, I only get 34-35 mpg. I drive a combination of regular roads and highway roads. My main concern with the car isn't the substantially lower than advertised mpg, but rather the fact that I have now had to have Ford Roadside Assistance come and jump my car on 4 different occasions, plus had my friends jump it once. I have brought it in multiple times for service, to two different Ford dealerships. Each time, getting the same answer: "There's nothing wrong with your battery, and we did the latest update. That should fix the problem." And yet still no solution.
High Expectations...but....
I thumbed through a lot of the reviews on Edmunds.com and it seems like we are experiencing a lot of the same things. We ordered our CMax with dreams of high MPG and ruled out a Mazda CX5 solely because of it. Had I known we'd be averaging low-to-mid 30's overall I think I would have bought the Mazda instead. We follow all of the recommended driving behaviors but the fact is "highway" really means 70+ MPH (not 60 when EPA standards were written) and some of the nation (even Dearborn, MI) has cold weather. We will be happy if we can get it to about 40 mpg now that we are past the legendary 500 mile "break in period". 42 month update: Overall we are satisfied with our CMax. We've experienced the same quirks with the Sync/Touch most drivers fuss about. Mileage is about 35mpg in highway only driving (70-75 mph mixed terrain) and 42-47 in urban/rural driving with a lifetime average of 38. We've had a few "software updates" at the dealer and none of them "took" the first time and on one occasion we had to leave the car for a week for a new computer component. We can't wait until we get our Tesla and they come automatically. Just replaced original tires around 57k miles. 54 month update: Continue to be grossly satisfied with the CMax. Still have quirky issues with Sync/Touch and the door gaskets are starting to deteriorate. We have a couple more payments then later this year this becomes our second car behind a Tesla or a luxury X-over. Mileage has slipped a little but still in the 37+ range much of the time. Something I forgot to mention before: We've received 2 rebate checks from Ford during the first 2 years of ownership with letters indicating they were to compensate for the less-than-advertised MPG. Not too many companies would do this and it lessens the disappointment of the mileage. Ford is a decent company and hopefully they can continue to innovate! C-Max Post mortem: We traded in our C-Max in January 2019 when we took delivery of our 2019 Volvo XC40. Overall the car had been running well since the last update but in the 6-8 weeks we heard a constant whine which we later learned was a common transmission issue when you get north of 100k miles. We weren’t interested in a $6k repair job and the Volvo dealer honored their initial trade in offer so it was win-win. Thanks for the 6 years of service!
