The 2026 M5 is wicked quick in a straight line. It also has a great-looking interior full of BMW's latest technology features. But we've found that its portly weight sucks a lot of fun out of the driving experience.Read full review

Cons
- Feels heavy and cumbersome when cornering
- Uncomfortable ride for everyday driving
- Learning its many settings and drive modes can be intimidating
What's new

- Two new two-tone leather options for interior
- Latest M5 is part of the eighth 5 Series generation introduced for 2024
Overview
Reimagined for 2025, the new BMW M5 carries the supersedan into the future with a twin-turbocharged V8 supplemented by a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Combined output is 717 horsepower, a massive figure for something that also boasts an electric range of 27 miles. This generation also marks the first time BMW has sold the M5 Touring in the U.S. That version packs all the power, luxury and performance of the sedan, plus the contrarian-chic appeal and cargo capacity of a station wagon.

Edmunds spotlight: Putting it all down
In addition to 717 horsepower, the 2026 BMW M5 generates a mountainous 738 lb-ft of torque. Transmitting that much twist to the ground requires standard xDrive all-wheel drive tuned by BMW's M division, but a rear-wheel-drive mode is available for drivers who want to try drifting their 5,400-pound Beemer. Although the new M5 outweighs its predecessor by more than 1,000 pounds, the battery pack mounted in the floor keeps the center of gravity low and preserves the car's famously sharp handling.
Competitors to consider
There seems to be no performance ceiling for midsize luxury sedans and station wagons, leaving shoppers in this class with lots of compelling choices. The Audi RS 7 and RS 6 Avant share a 621-hp twin-turbocharged V8. The Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing, with its 668-hp supercharged V8, is the only entrant left in this performance stratosphere with an available manual transmission and rear-wheel drive. The 771-hp Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid is perhaps the M5's most direct analog, with a plug-in powertrain and a similar electric range, but it is significantly more expensive. Shoppers considering a greater commitment to electrification should also check out the Lucid Air, a luxury EV with up to 512 miles of range.

We drove the 2026 BMW M5 on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Driving experience
6/10
How does the BMW M5 drive? Bad news: This M5 is slower and stops worse than a previous-generation M5 we tested. It needed 3.4 seconds to hit 60 mph in our testing. The last one? Just 3.2 seconds. It also needed 118 feet to stop from 60 mph. Though we suspect our test car's tires were past their prime, the 2018 M5 we tested did it in 99 feet. In pure performance terms, this M5 is a step backward due to its massive 1,000-pound weight gain.
Things don't get better when you get off the test track and head to a curvy road. The moment you turn a wheel, it's clear the M5 isn't as talented as before. The steering lacks connection, and all that mass muddies your faith in the car's performance. The ride has also been firmed up significantly to deal with the extra weight, and even in its softest setting, the suspension is too firm for everyday driving.
What BMW gets right on all 5 Series models, the M5 gets right too. The driver assistance systems, such as lane keeping assistance, adaptive cruise and blind-spot warning, all work well. Visibility is good thanks to a good view out of the front, sides and back. The multiple camera views and the sharp screen resolution are helpful aids too.

Comfort
6.8/10

The screens are super clear and make important information (like tire temperature and oil pressure) easy to access and read. The M5's firm ride creates some vibrations that make their way into the cabin, but the materials never squeak or rattle. Quirks from the firm ride aside, the M5 strikes a nice balance between sport and comfort.
The M5's climate controls are all touchscreen-based. Using them can be cumbersome, but we have no complaints about the climate system's ability to quickly heat or cool the cabin. The vents, however, can be a burden to adjust because of the atypical knobs BMW used. Should you need to fit car seats in your super hi-po sedan, the M5 has a decently roomy back seat with easy-to-access Isofix points.
In-cabin tech
9/10
How’s the tech? Even though the learning curve is steep, the software and hardware that make up BMW's infotainment are excellent. The screen reacts quickly and looks great thanks to deep blacks and great bright colors. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto both connect wirelessly and work faultlessly. We'd like more USB-C ports and a cooled charging pad, however.
BMW's voice control system is one of the best around, and while it might feel weird to talk to your car, the system works well enough that you'll want to use it. It can process commands like changing the temperature, turning on and off the head-up display, and more. Given how many of these functions are buried in a screen menu, this is a welcome feature.

Buying Tips for the 2026 BMW M5 for January
Looking to buy the 2026 BMW M5? Here are some tips to help you negotiate a great deal:
- New buyers can benefit as the Edmunds Market Price for the BMW M5 Touring trim is closely aligned with the MSRP, offering an approximate savings of $1,032 which is about 0.85% less than the sticker price.
- If you're considering the Base trim, you'll see even better savings, approximately $2,606 off the MSRP, which translates to around 2.14% less than the sticker price – a potential value opportunity!
- There's a $1,000 rebate available for military members and recent college grads.
- Special financing offers are available at a median APR of 5.39% for 36, 48, 60, or 72-month terms, saving you around 1-2% off market rates for these loan terms.
- There are 572 new BMW M5 Base trims and 245 Touring trims available nationwide, indicating better negotiating room due to higher inventory.
- The Touring trim spends about 15 days on the lot, indicating it's selling quickly, while the Base trim spends about 37 days, slightly faster than the average.

Storage & cargo
7/10
How’s storage and cargo? The M5 features one of the larger trunks you'll find in a midsize luxury sedan. There's significantly more space in the rear than the also hybridized Mercedes-AMG E 53 sedan. There is a small concession in cargo space compared to the regular 5 Series due to the hybrid battery, but it's only something you'd notice if you compared the cars back to back.
Storage inside the cabin is good, too, with several spots to stash sunglasses, small bags and more. There's a small bin in front of the cupholders large enough to stash two phones too. The door pockets aren't massive, but we'd say that's common for this class.

Value
6.5/10
Is the BMW M5 a good value? Value isn't always a question when you want an M5. You want one because you want something that offers blistering performance and everyday usability. The cost is simply a byproduct of how much you expect of a car like this. That said, the M5 is built extremely well, and even though that can be said about all of the modern 5 Series range, the build quality holds up even at the M5's much loftier price tag.
The problem is that, value-wise, it makes the previous M5 look like more of a bargain than ever. Despite the M5's added flexibility as a plug-in hybrid, its performance doesn't suit its price. BMW's basic and powertrain warranties are generally average for luxury cars, but its hybrid and battery warranties aren't as good.

Electric range/MPG
2.1/10
How’s the fuel economy? The EPA says that the M5 will do 29 miles on EV power alone, and after that, the gas engine will get up to 14 mpg combined. M5 buyers have always known they weren't getting a fuel-sipper, but on a long road trip, with the gas engine and electric motor efficiently trading off propulsion duties, we averaged 24 mpg. However, that's only if you're being extremely careful and road-tripping with mpg in mind. In city driving, you can expect to see numbers closer to what the EPA has estimated, and by performance plug-in hybrid standards, that's not very good.
X factor
7/10
You don't see many M5s on the road, and it has gravitas — even when sitting still. But its performance potential, plus the numbers we got in our day of testing, means it's lost a bit of the supercar-slaying menace of the last M5. It's a more usable and efficient car than before, but that has come at the expense of charm and focus.
2026 BMW M5 trim level differences
The 2026 BMW M5 is a high-performance midsize luxury sedan or station wagon — dubbed "Touring" in BMW's vernacular. Its plug-in hybrid powertrain pairs a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 with an electric motor tucked into the eight-speed automatic transmission. Total system output is 717 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque. BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive is standard. With a 14.8-kWh battery pack, the M5 sedan has an electric range of 27 miles, while the Touring is rated at 25 miles. There's only one trim level; feature highlights are as follows:

Which M5 trim does Edmunds recommend?
There are two body styles available for the M5, but only one trim level and few options beyond color and trim. Two major bundles worth a look are the Driving Assistance Professional package and the Executive package. The former includes partially autonomous driving tech, and the latter adds heated rear seats and ventilated fronts. (Heated front seats are standard.)

2026 BMW M5 Touring 4dr Wagon AWD (4.4L 8cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
The car is not - just okay. It's great.
It's drives better than most new thing, gets there faster and in ultimate comfort.
The Edmunds track guys could (and somewhat did) have picked on:
1. The plastic door releases
2. The giant coverless, grill that begs for road, bugs and leaves.
3. The fact that you can't buy all-season tires for it yet, forcing MANY folks to buy winter tires.
4. No … massage seat option.
5. The quiet-ish exhaust.
6. The clunky shifts from full electric, to hybrid, to gas. (Just like the X5 50e)
ALL BMW's have those type of foibles, but it shouldn't be given a THREE.
I will never track my car, and hopefully will never be in a high-speed chase, so "mostly" normal driving. While not like the hydraulic Porsche steering feel, the steering rack is better than 2022-2024 model M's. It has been upgraded like the 2025 M340s and Z4 M40, or better than the full M's. The car corners flat, stops fast, and the level and ratio of sport-to-comfort is way better than the Audi RS6. The car also does not have blind spots like the RS6. The fixed moonroof is large, but lacks the X5 sky lounge with LEDs and opaque fade. BMW straight up lied when they describe it as 'sky lounge' on the sticker. They could just say moonroof.
But for "mostly-normal-driving-daily" of us who want, some around-town electric, space, speed, sportscar, wagon and ride, there really is nothing else. I hope they make a 2027 slightly off-road model.
