The honeymoon isn't over yet
My wife and I have come back from 3 day trips and continued past the house just because we didn't want to quit driving this car. Average gas mileage is about 21.6. You can get 26 mpg rather easily just by keeping the rpm down around 2500, (boring). Beyond 3000 rpm the sound is kind of like the Teutonic scream you would expect from an 11.5:1 compression ratio engine tuned to deliver more than 100 hp/liter. The ride is firm like a performance car, but very comfortable. Noise is not a problem either. It is noisier than a limo in all the right ways. The wood dash trim improves the interior. The stereo is first rate. It has a dipstick, no run flats, and hydraulic steering. Brilliant!
Worthy competitor to the Boxster S
I have owned cars such as the Honda S2000, Porsche Boxster S, 2001 M Coupe, Subaru WRX, Integra Type R and can honestly say that the BMW Z4 M Roadster is the most exciting car to drive. It doesn't have the balance-poise of a Boxster S but it will make your heart rate shoot up in a flash once you've tried shifting at redline under full throttle. It's not an easy car to drive at first and drivers should be careful at the limit. My main complaints are: 1-Ride quality. Compared to the Boxster S or Cayman S the ride is VERY choppy-bouncy. The chassis does not soak up bumps as well as the Porsche. 2-Build quality. Exterior panel gaps and the interior trim pieces wear out quickly.

Rated M
Purchased this car used as a fun car/daily driver on nice days. The performance is incredible. I find that the engine is a little different than older BMW inline-6 in that you have to rev it for power. The exterior has a love it or hate it design but it must be seen in person to render a final opinion. The additional touches that the M car adds to the Z4 (front & rear valence, bigger wheels, quad- exhausts) go a long way to add some aggression to the design. The interior is very comfortable but I have a slim build. Interior design is top notch with the optional carbon leather trim. Bottom line, this is a pure driver's car, those looking for a plush riding luxury car need not apply.
What's up with the cup holders!
Picked up the car on March 30th. Have been driving a LOT to complete the 'break-in' period of 2000km. Have to change gears prior to 5500rpm due to this. The car starts to 'take-off' at 4000rpm and then it's time to change gears. I think I will love the accel from 4000rpm to the red-line at 8000rpm. This car hugs the road like a go-cart. No body roll!! Taking exit ramps designed for 50kph at >100kph without problems. This car handles like a gem.
Because is makes me SMILE
My Z4 M Coupe replaces an aftermarket supercharged Z3. 1 HP per 10 Lbs was a requirement. I use it as my daily driver, except when there is ice or snow. The performance is genuinely gratifying. Life is short, and acceleration makes mine most happy. This car also turns and stops with precision. The styling of the coupe is, in my eye and that of my spouse, much more appealing than the Z4 convertible, or of the Porsche alternatives. Frankly, the only thing that came close, was a Lotus Elise - but it was simply impractical as a daily driver. I bought and drive this car because it makes me smile every single time.
Austin Powers like, not 007
My summary about the E-85 BMW Z4-M. O.K. Let’s have some fun! I’m almost 65 years old, and have my youngest child in her last year of college, but wanted to jump the gun a bit on the purchase of a sports car that could age with me over the next couple of decades. Looked and drove all of the usual suspects….Mazda Miata, Honda S2000, Porsche Boxster, but also reviewed the MB 500SL series, the SLK models, all the way up to a very nice Austin Martin Vantage. My limit was the mid 40’s and maybe more if the right car showed up. I had a check book and pen, and was committed to make this work, but the first several cars mentioned did not fit me physically. I’m 6’1”, 190 lbs., and can swim 5k in a little over two hours, but just couldn’t find the right fit. The big MB and Vantage were nice, but looked like an old man’s car….felt like one too. Don’t get me wrong, all of these cars are wonderful, and each had strengths that are amazing and more than adequate, but nothing outstanding until I drove this little Z4. For me, it’s perfect; six speed, rack & pinion, fat brakes, fatter steering wheel, naturally aspirated smooth as silk I-6 to the 8k rev limit, and it’s analog. Maybe I’m a bit older than I think. Spent 16K for a roadster in perfect condition, but gives me a satisfaction level like I spent 35. Complaints are that the numbers on the gauges are a bit small (once again an age thing), and that I don’t drive it enough so it just sits in the garage too often wanting me to get in it and go. Not for everyone, but it should be on your blacktop mojo list if you’re look’n. Yeah, Baby!!

Great car with a few faults
This car was a spur of the moment purchase for me. Originally was going to buy a Boxster but this was a better deal. I took the car to performance driving school even before I got the license plates. This car handles amazing!!! Mine is Interlagos Blue/Black and fully loaded. It is flashy but living in Houston Z4s are common so it appears more low key. This car is a true sports car with handling that can blow your mind. Mine is a daily driver so my gripes are lack of trunk space, but I knew that going in. Depreciation is a killer... I got this car at half of what it originally cost in 06. Great deal for me and puts a smile on my face every time I hear the deep roar of the exhaust.
M Power To The Recue!
Jump in open roadster style, just make sure your shoes aren't dirty so you don't get your comfy M seats dirty. Within just a few seconds, 4.5 to be exact you can lose your license but I would be smiling the entire time. I haven't been able to hit high speeds or get to 60 that quick due to the break in period, but just thinking about it gets me excited. Handling is great, being able to take turns that can easily get you arrested is more than just fun. The steering wheel fits in your hands while the shifter is perfectly placed, just as the pedals are. It's hard to keep this car under 80 even on the curvy freeway onramps.
My Ultimate Driving Machine
Been driving this since mid-may and I absolutely love it. Looks sharp, great quality, phenomenal performance, and the BMW service behind it. My 3rd new Bimmer and by far the best.
Wow what a car.
At this price point one has lots of choices. BMW's fit, finish and M's performance did it for me. I love my car, I only wish it had little more seat back recline angle. I would also like to have had 255/19s up front and 285/19s at the rear. I wanted to change a few things but I was told by my dealer that I have to wait a year before things like louder exhausts etc. are available.
fun fun fun
(Black/black/black, all features except Nav). This car is a dramatic improvement over my old Z4 (2003, 3.0l). The ride alone is worth the money. The engine is more than powerful enough, especially for the US where you can become illegal in about 4.5 seconds. The cornering and straight line acceleration are delightful. The engine noise of the old Z4 was better (piped in sound), but I have not yet been able to get to high revs due to break in period. I love the Z4 look, it really is better in real life, and the M roadster is sharper and more aggressive looking. You will not be sorry. You will be happy. Get hard top prep so you can go to the track.
Fun to Drive
I have had my Blue/Black M Roadster for just over two weeks. It is quick, handles extremely well and has great brakes. I find the ride to be firm but not punishing. This is a fine automobile with superb fit and finish. I have a DB9 and a Porsche 997S and I find this car more fun to drive than either of those two excellent autos.
Great Improvement on previous M roadster
This car is so much better than my 2000 M Roadster that after one test drive I was sold. Since then, it keeps getting better. Incredible fun to drive. Get one and smile a lot!
Awesome driver's car
Anyone who doesn't like this car just can't drive anyway. The most fun, a real race car with all the luxury you need to get by day to day. Definitely not for everyone.
Awesome Roadster
This is one of the most amazing compact cars available on the market today. Sophisticated computer systems invisibly assist the driver while cornering, hard braking and accelerating. The feeling of safety and security in such a small car is incredible. The premium sound system is amazingly crisp and clear with excellent dynamic range. This vehicle turns heads everywhere - I've never had so many total strangers comment about the car. Be prepared to draw attention!
A man's car
Always wanted to buy an M car. Plus was looking for a 3rd ("fun") car. Voila - the M roadster. Considered the SLK (no stickshift), Boxster (for M money you can only buy the wimped out model with around 240 HP which most mags gloss over), and the Corvette (too common). Looks great in 3-D no matter what mags say. Has presence, menace. A very capable track car with two caveats, easily fixed; i.e. previous gen tires and some brake fade. Ride is not harsh. Interior looks great but the dash feels like it's made of cheap plastic. User friendly controls. No problems in one year of ownership. Takes time to start in sub-freezing temps. Engine is supreme, shifter precise. A man's car.
Z4 M Roadster
Great car. Of recent sports cars I've owned this one has the torque/acceleration of my 430 hp '03 Cobra and handling of my Honda S2000.
Love the M Roadster
The car is nimble and yet awesomely powerful, it handles the curves like it's on rails. The interior is a tad bit cramped for a large person but is comfortable and does not have that cheap look found in a Corvette. The M roadster draws some attention on the road but not like the glitzy Italian inspired vehicles. It is a true classic sports car for someone who drives a sports car for the sheer love of it.
The Ultimate "Droptop" Sports Car
The Z4 M Roadster is a true sports car following a long tradition of drop top British sports cars. It has awesome power and incredible handling and always puts a smile on my face when I drive it. This is not an Italian exotic that looks like it should be ready for takeoff from an aircraft carrier's flight deck, but a true traditional fun to drive thrilling sports car. It is my childhood dream come true!
I returned this to the Dealer 28 Aug
Hi - BMW has finally decided to take my Z4 M Roadster back. Had it since April on a lease and had been in at the dealership 15 odd times till August 28. Had multiple problems including: 1) Squeaks when the roof was down and when they fixed this 2) squeaks when the roof was up on the drivers side and when that was fixed 3) squeaks on the passenger side and when they fixed that 4) rattle in the a/c vents and when they fixed this 5) the windows would not close when the roof was put up unless I opened each door, did the window up and then shut the door and they changed the on-board computer and guess what - the windows still did not close!! It spent at least 4 weeks at the shop in 5 months!!
BMW Z4 2006 w/M-Package, 3.0 liter engine
We recently purchased an 2006 BMW Z4 M-Package. This sporty little car is not only comfortable but has an aggressive attitude when you press the sport button! My wife has to tell me to slow down some times. Anyway, the body of this vehicle is extremely well designed and gets a lot of looks, as where ever we go this car is being looked at from short and long distances. The interior is red leather and the exterior is gray/silver and we love this color combo, BMW certainly has outdone themselves with the Z4. If your looking for speed and looks, this is the car for you. and you will not go wrong with this vehicle.
