Unbelievably fast and amazing sound system

Steve, 10/15/2022

This is my first electric car. Everything works as it says. The sound system is absolutely amazing. Range is very good. Small things that are odd. Front hood does not open for storage. Only can be opened by bmw. No home link on the mirror. Overall very happy with purchase. Can drive it very easily slowly around town. When you want acceleration it takes off with head snapping torque.

First EV, now I’m spoiled. iX xDrive 50

Being my first EV, I’m blown away by its efficiency, comfort, quietness, acceleration, and style. The polarizing exterior style grows on me, and interior just impressed me from my first test drive. When you are inside and enjoying this vehicles interior, it could look like a rolling 💩, and I don’t care, LOL. I’m seeing better than EPA mileage as most have, and charging has been a breeze. Nice plus is BMW’s 2 years of free public charging at Electrify America. Basically, free fuel if the EA works for you. Home charging is a breeze too. There is a plethora of tech, which I like simple better, but it can be a set up and forget it too. If you have a iPad, you’re right at home. The climate controls are amazing, and winter comfort is better than any car I’ve driven in 44 years. Love the heated steering wheel, door panels and console that surround you in addition to immediate climate comfort. Enjoy the “Climatization” on phone app that preconditions (pre-heat or cool) with a simple touch before departing. There have been a few minor glitches with apps, but no big deal. Afterall, it is a rolling computer. Update after 14 months of use. This iX50 has done great in the winter snow. The preheating or cooling of the car before entering from a phone app is fantastic. Heats or cools in 5 minutes. Economy is great, getting a surprising 360 miles in summer.with a 100% charge, which I do only when traveling. Winter temps cut that by about 20%, depending on temps. Trouble free, best car I’ve ever owned. Update 6/24: This has been the best car I’ve owned, and that’s in the dozens of new cars. I’m doing a bit more traveling in SE USA mountains and charging is an issue. I traded for a 2025 BMW X5 50e PHEV. It gives me great round town zero gas for 45+ miles, and great fuel economy of 35-45 mpg on road so far. Very similar to iX. Update 1/25: The iX was the best car I’d owned. However, being a full EV, I found charging in the wild to sometimes be a hit and miss. By this I was finding that only using fast chargers in the wild, I’d encounter non functioning chargers or waits for a charger sometimes. It was frustrating to pull up to a bank of 6 chargers in use and 4 of them being finished, yet no one there to open it up. So you’re stuck waiting. Home charging was a breeze and provided 300+ miles of range but I’d still get range anxiety after 200-250 miles not knowing if a good charger would be available, even using charge station location apps. So I took the EV value hit and ordered a 2025 BMW X5 50e PHEV. The PHEV better fits my lifestyle, as I drive it 80-90% of the time in all electric, and then have the wonderful in line 6 twin turbo to carry on when traveling. Bottom line, iX is wonderful if charging away from home works for you. In SE USA, charging is not ready for EV life.

Great car- lousy BMW corporate attitude

Mark , 08/15/2024

We love the car, but the communication system control card keeps failing due to overheating and BMW is not trying to fix it claiming it happens when the car gets too hot. Apparently the card is in the ceiling and the heat from the sunroof can cause the card to overheat and fail. Sadly BMW 's attitude is "there's nothing they can do about it" leaving owners with a possible failure of the emergency call system. They don't seem to be looking for a solution or plan a recall even tho they admit seeing it in lots of cars. Had I known this problem in advance I would not have bought the car. Going to file a Lemon Law lawsuit, but may have to ask for a refund rather than a new car since it will likely have the very same issue.....

Best New Car I've Ever Had

Bryant, 09/07/2023
2024 BMW iX xDrive50 4dr SUV AWD (electric DD)
11 of 12 people found this review helpful

This car is a level up from all the other electrics on the market. I researched and tested all the SUVs available, and nothing came close to the iX. Yes, it's pricey, but I searched for a deal, and found one at a dealership where I got BMW's $9,900 lease credit, and $8,000 additional off from the dealer, so I felt that at $76,000 this car was a steal. I'm so impressed with the looks (yes, I even like the front), driving dynamics, interior comfort, tech, ride quality (even on 22" wheels), regenerative braking/energy recapture, and range. When I was looking for iXs I really wanted the Shadowline trim, ventilated leather seats, 20" wheels, and the premium package, what I got was Sensa Tec non-ventilated seats, Sport trim, 22" wheels, and the convenience package, and I couldn't be happier with the "less than" vehicle I ended up with. I've had a lot of cars (basically getting a new lease every few years), and this is the one that I wake up thinking I can not wait to get in it and drive somewhere. There are a couple very nit-picky items that I would like to be different. First, the rearview mirror (especially on the left/driver side is maybe too small. I can't seem to get a great view of the lane next to me no matter how much I fiddle with the adjustment. Secondly, and this would help immensely with the first, I wish there were turn signal cameras on the iX. It has cameras everywhere, so why not engage them when the turn signal is turned on to give the driver a very clear view of what's in the right or left lane before changing. My last car had this, and I do miss it. Other than those two pretty small items, there's nothing about the iX I haven't enjoyed, and I can't wait to drive it everyday. It is an absolutely phenomenal product by BMW.

Unexpected luxury

I’ve driven a X5 45e hybrid for 2 years. It’s been a satisfying journey waiting for a refined luxury totally electric car that has the road feel of a BMW. The iX is that car. You often hear the phase minimalist to describe the interior. That’s not my experience . It’s clean sculptured interior cloaks industry leading technology designed to enhance your driving experience. It’s a car you can’t wait to drive. The newly designed seats are a departure for BMW. Yes the traditional “seat shaped” control still exists but the touch screen allows you the adjust the seat to a higher level of comfort. But that’s not why the iX experience has but a smile on my face. It’s the g force acceleration and road handling that makes this a true ultimate driving machine. UPDATE: Leased my dream electric vehicle or at least I thought. After 2 months the car alerted me that my passive restraint system had failed and not to drive the vehicle. I drove to the dealer and after a bit of negotiation was able to get a base loaner. A MONTH later the part arrived. A week later it has not been installed. Pretty clear BMW rushed this product to market without adequate parts and trained repair specialists. Buyers be aware.

Subjective Criticism based on 6 months ownership

Rivak, 10/28/2023
2024 BMW iX xDrive50 4dr SUV AWD (electric DD)

The Pro's of my IX ownership: As far as the IX's said range, BMW has underestimated its capacity, which is a good thing, and typically BMW when it comes to power output and now EV range. My range average is based on probably the most adverse conditions living in sizzling hot Scottsdale Arizona. My IX 50 is my daily commuter which averages 52 miles per day of mixed city and 7 miles of highway. I certainly down-live in the flat parts of Arizona. Mostly undulating hills. Moreover, I have run the IX with the AC at its coolest 60F temperatures. The BMW app says my average consumption for the past 3 months is 3.5 mi/kWh, and I am 14% of the community average. With that said my total range from 100% to 10% remaining has consistently been 366 miles. I'm sure if I ventured down to 3% battery life I could achieve a 400-mile battery range. I'm very impressed! I always drive my IX 50 in the Eco/ efficient mode. The Cons of my IX ownerships are as follows: 1. Cheap interior cabin materials. Lots of hard plastics and piano black finish which scratch easily. For a $98,000 EV, I expected better. 2. The Sensatec seats feel cheap and lack the 21-way adjustability of the BMW X5 3. Yes, the look is polarizing, but the consumer learns to adapt to it. Not much of a wow factor. 4. Not a fan of I drive 8.5. having to touch a screen for AC or toggle to other menus is annoying. 5. The car is very heavy. Contrary to what Edmonds says about agility, I disagree. often it feels like I'm driving a U-haul when it comes to cornering. Overall, I cannot give this car 5 stars. Perhaps if I moved up to the IX M60 which is a $118,000 BMW EV the suspension and the interior quality would have been greatly improved. However, I wasn't prepared to spend an extra $20K for leather seats and airbag rear suspension.

The Finest in Luxury EV SUV’s

Picked up my loaded iX xDrive 50 after an anxious 6 month wait when ordered in 4/22. Delivery in 11/22. What a great ride, fun to drive, crazy good range (365 actual range at a 100% charge) with 21” wheels. Such a smooth and quiet luxe cruiser, with a tiger hiding under that hood? Fast. Interior is splendid, exterior was a bit polarizing, but has become very attractive. My first EV. Charging is easy ant home, or ant a couple local fast chargers, and travel has been enjoyable as long as I could find fast chargers. Plenty of interior space, quality craftsmanship in materials, for an interior that wows. Update 09/24: This car is still the nicest car I’ve owned in 45 years. I had no issues with it, and range was as good as an EV gets. However, I recently traded it for the 2024 BMW X5 50e PHEV. This was due to limited charging available in SE USA away from home. I also did not enjoy pulling into fast charge stations only to find units not working or a wait. The 50e PHEV is a much better fit for me at this time, and I hardly use any gas in how I drive it. Excellent efficiency.

BMW iX M60 is Best BMW Ever

Todd Ramming, 02/01/2024

We have owned the 2024 for a few weeks now and it is by far the best car we have ever had. We previously drive a 2010 diesel X5 and an i3. In making the iX, BMW took some of the innovations of the i3 (like carbon fiber), which was a city car with limited range, to produce a fully capable SUV with amazing comfort, options and performance. People make fun of the looks of iX, but I think it is a beautiful and innovative design, in many ways like the i3, which some people also mocked. The car is super comfortable both in front and back. The leather is supple, beautiful and well crafted. The sunroof that you can make opaque with a button is perfect (and won’t have mechanical failure like happened to the X5). The sound system (B&W) and screens are stunning. It is easy and fun to drive and handles much smaller than it is. Range is great, even when you take advantage of the crazy acceleration. When you aren’t, Relaxation mode with massaging seats and calming visuals is better than a spa. Todd

Overall very very satisfied with BMW iX. Looks great & drives great, even compared to my previous EV, Teslar model S. iX has better interior as well. But the auto drive is not as good. Also, S/W could be a bit more user friendly.

This is our first BEV and I think we are hooked. The IX is quintessential BMW, the power sublime and the tech is first order. Warming the vehicle for one to two minutes before getting in on cold days makes it very comfy. So quiet I can actually hear the sound system. Great visibility, I love the suspension (not air) and I'm sure we haven't discovered all the features yet! I've had quite a few German cars - Audi, BMW and MB. This is definitely the future.

$96k AND NO MEMORY SEAT IN CONVENIENCE PACKAGE

Nobody seems to know this in any review or even at dealership when I bought my iX. Only way to get memory seat control on door is to order Premium Convenience Package. Regular Convenience package does not include it. Software may be available with driver and guest driver key but nobody seems to know how to make it work on my car so far. I have a loaner while dealer has my new iX so they can figure it out.

Subpar Luxury

Kraken, 07/14/2023

Tested this car for a little over two weeks and it was a disappointment. This looks great on paper and in the pictures, but the shortcomings are obvious once you start to live with it. Having also lived with the X5 50e and the X7 40i, the iX pales in comparison to it's siblings on the same lot. In terms of driving experience the 3 are roughly the same, except for the EV acceleration of the iX which is a rocket for something with this kind of mass. The adaptive EV braking mode is useful but lacks consistency and is hard to predict which leads to a bit of jerkiness at times. The blended braking feels better and more natural in the X5 50e than the iX. Luxury is where the iX falls short. The suspension can't match the smoothness of the air suspension in the X5 or X7. Wind noise is also more prevalent possibly due to the frameless windows. Interior materials doesn't match the price tag with cheap feeling steering wheel controls and turn signals. While the center console has too much plastic. The airbag cover on the steering wheel is also plastic instead of leather. Being a parent of an infant, the split tailgate in the X5 and X7 are plenty useful as a diaper changing station which the iX lacks. The C-Pillar on the iX is also very forward in that it hampers loading and unloading kids into a rear facing car seat. The lack of shades in the iX is also not good for keeping a baby asleep on a hot sunny day. The iX is a great car in an EV only vacuum. But comparably equipped, the iX 50 costs roughly $15k more than the X5 50e and $7k more than the X7 40i. Besides the EV powertrain and experience, it's hard to find a compelling reason to get the iX over its stablemates.

I switched from owning two Tesla’s. Initially was very happy, but after 13 months of owning the vehicle I got a high voltage warning light. It was with the dealer for 6 weeks with no communication other than ‘we are waiting for Germany to instruct us what to do next because these cars are so new…’ Do not think they are ready for prime time unfortunately.

I owned iX 50 for two weeks and returned due to some warranty issue. Pros Driving experience was very good Free charging Cons Seats were not comfortable at all. No lumbar support. I am 6ft tall and there is no thigh support. Seat adjustment also very limited. Steering also very odd design and I was feeling pain in my toe. Cup holders placement is very poorly designed. You cannot really place cup without looking because it is under the main console Overall quality of interior material is inferior to Mercedes EQS or even BMW X5

Loved It but Hated It

I could give you 1000 reasons why I liked this EV, but also give you 1001 reason why I disliked the car. The major reason: range fear and lack of adequate charging stations in the Northeast (unless you are a Tesla owner). In addition, plan on losing a minimum of 25% of your range when the temperature drops below 45 degrees. Charging at 90% during the summer, I had 345 miles of range. Once the temp dropped, charging to 100% only gave me 285 miles maximum. Great car, great drive, but I am just not ready at this time for an EV. At least not until significant improvements are made in the infrastructure and battery technology.

Goodbye Tesla, Hello BMW iX!

I had a Tesla Model 3 Performance for 6 years. It was a good car, but I needed more room and also wanted a car that had better build quality. The iX gives me that and much more. It is the best car I have ever owned. It offers a sporty drive and has plenty of power. The interior is truly outstanding - beautiful leather, crystal accents, radiant heat, a great heads up display, and an electrochromic glass roof that lets you change the glass from clear to opaque with the touch of a button. Plus, it is perhaps the quietest cabin I have ever driven in. The ride with the air suspension is incredible - it absorbs bumps in the road and can be both comfortable and sporty. I give the iX the highest of recommendations.

Better mileage than EPA estimate

have had it for 5 weeks now. No problems so far, other than trying to learn all of the tricks this thing can do. Mileage is much better than what EPA estimates. There are several driving Modes available. When I select "Efficient" I get about 380 miles on a charge, with no discernable change in driving characteristics. If i select "Maximum Efficiency" I get well over 400 miles. The trade off is that the A/C and Heat won't run in that mode. The controls are mostly in the apps on the big screen so can take some getting used to. Acceleration coupled with the piped in sound is fantastic! Great car so far.

I can't give the BMW IX 4 stars

While I love driving the car, being a passenger is different. Considering the $115K price tag for the comfort package and upgraded sound. Firstly, the exterior design is unappealing, particularly the kidney grilles at the front, which are a significant design misstep and quite unsightly. Inside, the seats are designed with a hard mold around a hole that causes passengers to bump their heads during acceleration or braking. It's uncomfortably firm and could potentially cause a concussion in extreme situations, like when you slam on the brakes. Also, the cup holders are practically unusable as they're placed too low, making it a stretch to reach your coffee unless you are an ape with unusually long arms. Another point of contention is the non-reclining back seats, which I find ridiculous. Despite the other great aspects of the car, these issues are significant enough that I'll consider alternatives like Rivian or Tesla when my lease is up.

I did not have too much expectation from this given I have driven Tesla for last 6 years but I was pleasantly surprised. Speed, heads up display, battery performance, different modes and overall feel is amazing. Overall totally worth the price.

First Electric Vehicle- iX xdrive50

I have said for years that I would get an electric car if it could get me to my condo at Northstar at Tahoe on a single charge. Well this is the car. The drive from Campbell, CA is 232 miles and goes over Donner Pass at 7200ft on Interstate 80. Add to that the fact that we are doing the drive in the winter with cold weather reducing the output of the battery. It is a challenge but the iX can do it and get there with about 15% battery remaining. What we love about the iX: quiet and smooth ride incredible power great interior good audio system (I have the Harmon Kardon system) can't imagine what the $3400 Bowers and Wilkins sounds like technology- Driver Assist plus and Parking assist plus voice commands- you can adjust most settings, volume, climate etc without using the touchscreen fast charging at public DC fast chargers- I use just level 1 (110v) charging at home as I don't do a lot of driving on a daily basis now that I am retired. We have no problem keeping iX adequately charged and if we need to, we can always bump up at a Public DC fast charge station comfortable seats roomy interior CarPlay integration In general it makes the drive to Tahoe much less stressful. If we stop for a restroom break and something to eat we plug the iX in and add another 70-100 miles to the range so when we get there we still have enough charge to get around. came with 1000kWh of free charging at Electrify America. What we don't like about the car: it came with the Sports Package, bigger wheels and (all season) performance tires, looks great but not great in snow and ice. Seems the dealerships in our area order most that way. Great in the Bay Area but not so great in the mountains. I would have preferred the 20" standard wheels with all season tires which would work better in the mountains. I may get some cable chains in case of really icy conditions in the mountains. One annoying feature I can't figure out how to deactivate is that when you approach the car and open the door it starts playing music at the level you were at when you parked. I love music but do not want to be blasted with Led Zepplin as I get into the car. Let me get out on the road and then I can select some music. I wish the trip display also included drive time- it shows only miles and kWh consumed. Overall we are very pleased with our decision to get the iX. We drove a lot of plug-in and gas SUV and most of the EV's before settling on the iX. Once you drive the iX you are spoiled. One feature I'm really glad we have on our car is the dual axle air suspension. It smooths out the ride and includes 4-wheel steering which is great in tight parking garages. It is about as close to a perfect vehicle that I have ever had.

Best car I've ever owned

We've owned 36 BMWs since 2008 (6 full Ms), and 26 Audis since 2000. The iX M60 is the best car we have ever owned. The build quality stuns. The interior is a silent Spa. The B&W system is shocking. The ride is a cloud. The handling is predictable glue. The acceleration blows the mind. 140+mph hands-free. Life is great
