1995 540i BEST BMW CAR EVER!!! no nikasil problem.

I just got my first BMW A 1995 540i with the original engine block Nikasil. Never was replaced. Only has 80k on it. Runs JUST FINE!! I love this car it handles great, wish I could buy another. Great with turns, has POWER... Had the local BMW shop check the engine out and said its still strong and good. The whole Nikasil thing was blown out of the water, some were affected while others were not. I will never go back to a honda again thats for sure. Love this car will and go to the grave with it. SMOOTH SMOOTH SMOOTH...

95 540il my kind of car

Bought this car used on a lease forfeiture. Strongest car I had ever driven at the time. Used it for business for 2 years then gave it to my wife for our personal use. Big horsepower on a short, heavy body. Turns great like all big german cars. Seats are comfortable. Leg room short for adults in the rear. Only complaints are the weak front center arm rests and the lack of drink holders.

Do I need a new mechanic?

After reading all these stellar reviews I'm beginning to wonder if I need a new mechanic. I bought this car used, 6 years ago. It's pushing 200,000 miles, but I hear these cars can last forever. It shudders HARD when I drive between 45-55 mph, drivers side window regulator regularly craps out, belts fall off, has a severe oil leak that can't seem to be fixed, and a coolant light that beeps at me no matter what I do (so I either leave my lights on, because I've grown to ignore the beep, or run the risk of overheating because it cries wolf all the time). Interior display has dimmed to the point of invisibility, and the following parts melted off: hood ornament, side mirror, interior door frame.

I have been in teh BMW family for a few years now and this car has been a lot of fun to drive even as an automatic. For a 17 year old car it can still handle well, even after years of New England weather. My car has started every day in hot, cold, wet, dry and snow filled days with out issue and has never left me stranded, it is a higher maintenance 5 series due to it being the V8. Average extra cost a year would be estimated at around $2000.00, for a typical do it yourself er. I have had the car 11 months now and have bought new suspensions, mounts, brakes, exhaust, and typical other things.

Nikasil engine is a killer

I have this vehicle since it's new. However, it came with a nikasil V8 instead of alusil V8. Gradually the high sulphur of US fuel started to cause problems with the engine. Now it needs engine replacement, $9k plus labor. If you own one with an alusil engine, you should buy a lottery ticket. If you are thinking about getting a used one, you must make sure what type of engine it has. Check the engine block numbers before buying it. It's a very serious problem!

Best car I ever drove (so far)

Note: I own a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country, 1991 Patherfinder, 1993 Ford Escort and there are no comparisons to any of them. I bought this 10 year old BMW with 91000 miles on it. I must say that this car is the best car I ever drove. The car makes me feel that I have full control of every inch to the car. It gives me the feeling for ESP, because the response time is incredible.

Sorry to be emotional but....today i traded my 525 i for a new 2003 325i. long story short...the 95 525i was the best car I have ever owned and (sorry to be corny) but I almost cried at the dealership - and felt like a total traitor when I walked away from my eight year love affair with my first BMW. the cars are truly "the ultimate driving machine" the 525i continued to handle and drive like it did eight years ago - firm, agile and taut. a great car. It saved my life when I was rear-ended by a drunk driver who was going over 50 mph. thanks - I will miss you

This was my first Bimmer, and I gotta tell ya, it is NICE. Smooth as silk on the highway, and the traction control really keeps you on the road in crappy conditions. So far, it's been pretty reliable. The only repair I've had to make was the fuel pump (quit at 125K) which was not that big of a deal. I got into an accident with this car, and WOW. I honestly believe this car saved my life. Worth the price for the safety alone!

I bought this car after having looked at and researched many BMWs. My expenses have been minor. The previous owner had installed the optional 17" tires along with Eibach springs. This gave a great first impression (M5), but he didn't replace the OEM struts which weren't able to control the shorter more aggressive springs. I replaced the struts (myself) with Bilstein Sport units and the ride control was much improved. (Albeit a little harsh on rough roads.) I've put nearly 55,000 miles on the car since Oct 2003 and it going strong!

Traded in a 525i for a wagon for more room. One of the best handling and performing cars; even in a wagon! The controls and build are solid and well placed. I get between 25-28 mpg on the highway fully loaded with kids. The rear wheel drive layout is perfectly matched to the smooth six. You don't even feel the transmission changing gears as you do in American cars. Everything feels solid about the car.

I bought this car used from a friend that has taken great care of it. Very roomy inside. Much better than a 3 series. V8 engine that provides good top end power and has the fuel economy to prove it. A little slow out of the gate though. Maintenance is a real problem. It's hard to get the parts to fix it ourself and the guys down at the shop want too much. I've had a lot of problems with oil leaks and each time I go in to have them fixed, it costs me around $500.

I bought the car with 180,000 kms appeared to be in mint condition and fully serviced. Performance is better than I was led to believe with this car in automatic and the six cyl.. Handing is superb with 17' TSW wheels and Bridgestone Potenza RE730's. Only problem is the lack of a cup holder. Gas mileage is great - motor runs like a sewing machine. Model looks sportier (more aggressive) than current version. No regrets buying this one and will be upgrading with engine and transmission chip and a Dinan High Flow Throttle Body. Considerably more luxurious than my other BMW (84 533i).

Just bought my first bimmer and I'd have to say it is my favourite car to drive for luxury and comfort. I owned an rx-7 and a suped up, customized 65 karmann ghia both of which had power, but the 540ia now is my prized possession. I love all that it has, except for the maintenence costs. It's a bmw what do you expect though. Anyway for a 95 it is almost as nice as the new ones and a fraction of the cost. I get excited everytime i get in the drivers seat. Definitely has power. Just ask the cars next to me at the lights when I blow their doors off. If you can find a 540ia in good shape for a good price I recommend it. I am a true BMW fan.

Purchased a used Dinan 5, 540ia supercharged. I had owned a 1985 735ia before. Interior was very close to the 735. Power and handling was vastly better. 0-60 in under 5 sec and 60-0 makes your stomach turn. Corners are FUN. 90 degree corner at 60 kph and no problem staying in my lane and No tire squeal. Wow, I have driven many sports cars, but this defines sport.

With a budget of $20,000, I went to a couple of dealerships and drove some nice cars, like a 2000 Maxima and a 2002 Altima. First, I really don't like front wheel drive cars, which doesn't leave one with many options these days. Plus these cars (even the Maxima) seemed a bit sluggish. Then, I found a '95 BMW 5401 w/ a six-speed manual tranny. I asked about it and the salesguy said, "Oh, it's a manual shift...we can't seem to sell it." Well, for me...a six-speed is a real selling point. I took it for a spin and I could'nt believe the torque from that beast ! It had soooo much power and it handled so much better than the other cars I had driven.

The car is definitly worth the money, however, have it inspected first to ensure the prior owner took care of it. Yes parts can be expensive, but use the internet for all of the online distributers and your maintainence costs drop dramitically. The engine is incredibly strong throughout the RPM band with torque and horsepower consistently available (especially in sport mode).

This is my fourth BMW. By far the most practical and useful. Solid yet nimble and smooth. Leather is very thick...mine looks new at 9 years old. Have 145000 with no issues to report. So easy to load/unload the rear with either big rear hatch or just the glass hatch. Roomy with all the fun stuff...even the dual sunroofs are unusual. BMWs to me combine everything you need in a car.

After months of research and comparisons with MB and Lexus, I found my 525 5-speed. Considered a 98 but the 95 has the styling that won't look dated. After a year and 12000 miles no mechanical problems to speak of. Only gripe is brake light circuit warning light that has a mind of its own. Average overall MPG about 20 so far with the ability to get 28 or more on the highway if I can drive under 70 mph. Great car. Still under 100k so looking forward to many more ahead. Not a burner off the line, but better mileage than a v-8.

I absolutely love my BMW'S. Yes I said plural -BMW'S. Back in the '70's an ex boyfriend had an orange '68 2002. That started the whole mess. I dumped my Firebird 4000 (which was a piece of garbage)- and traded it in and bought a '73 2002 (which I still have). I know you might find this hard to believe but it drives and handles like new!!!! I also have a '95 525i sedan which I also use and love. I like the cloth interior - it's cool in the summer and comfortable in winter. Everything about my cars is perfect! The only thing on the 525i is - I would give it a few more horses. The hell with those stupid cup holders!

This car is a mixed bag. It is extremely comfortable in front but cramped in back. It gets fairly poor gas mileage, about 19 mpg in mixed driving. OTOH it is fast even by today's standards; the engine is a joy, and it handles amazingly well for such a big car. The steering is perfect, the brakes are excellent, and the controls are generally within easy reach. One exception is the window controls, which inexplicably take up most of the area between the front seats, where a console should be instead.

Purchased used and have put 138K on this car (168K total) and loving every minute of it. Sure, it has had its share of repairs - but you have got to expect some maintenance on a 10 year old vehicle.Quality is outstanding - parts are expensive but they are not that cheap stuff you find on other cars. Question is - how long before it totally breaks so that I can justify buying a new one? A BMW is not just a status symbol. It is a statement to other (cheaper) manufacturers that we will not be fooled by inferior quality. Funny thing is that my friends still buy cheap american cars every 3 years and don't understand why they still have a car payment.

I have a red 5-speed and it is a blast to drive. Terrific at responding to the driver's intentions. Mirrors and car shape allow for very easy viewing of other cars around you which can really make a driving experience. Driver is truly in complete control. CLASSIC body style. Car looks incredible when clean. Very tight steering and VERY impressive handling for a sedan. Car loves to be pushed. Built to be driven. I average about 24 mpg and can go well over 400 mi on a tank. Trunk space is a-plenty. Back seat leg room a little tight. Nothing better than taking this baby out on a warm sunny day with the windows down and the music up.

The '95 540i is among the last understated, genuinely beautiful cars from BMW. It is tremendously powerful and the routine maintenance consists of little more than oil changes and brake jobs. The downfall is the transmission. It is a sealed unit with "lifetime" fluid (complete nonsense). It _will_ fail at 100k mi. and cost $5k to replace. The car is worth $4k. My trans has disgorged it's fluid on the driveway fully 4 different times. Each episode requires a limping trip to the shop and a bill of $300. On the road, the car is heavy and ponderous and not in the least bit fun to drive. Brakes have only two modes: off and full lock up. Zero finesse. Big disappointment.

Bought black with black interior BMW 540 used - 9 years old (nickname Vader). All my previous cars were just tools for traveling. Vader's comfort, solid construction, and performance made me 'fall in love'- feel safe and pampered. Superior quality leather seats and interior. Exterior is classic and elegant. Gets 19 mpg; engine has hp & torque to merge into highway traffic, and maneuver out of danger with ease. Headlights are more like laser beams. No one keeps brights in my eyes if I flash the hi-beams at them! Nikosil engine was replaced by a previous owner. Vader has been reliable daily driver, with only routine maintenance needed, and I travel 100 miles/day. This is one great car.

Simply put the best car you can buy for a few grand. Build quality/ride/handling/braking rivals new cars. Steering is ok, loads up well, good feedback but poor on center and is not as quick as modern cars. V8 with a 6spd manual (proper) gear box is a dream. These things take a good deal of maintenance and repair, simple as that (find me a 16+ year old car that doesnt'!). Parts are reasonable, labor is pricey. Parts availability and technical info is outstanding (old bimmers have a great group of owners!) I like this car a lot but it just isn't the best fit for my needs. I would prefer to sacrifice some of the greatness of an old BMW for a less hassle newer car.

I bought this car with 75k miles on it, I now have over 165,000! As you'd expect, repairs are eventually required, I've done most of the work myself: water pump, radiator, front & rear rotors, shocks/struts front and rear, steering linkage. Yes, some of these cars have an engine block that causes a somewhat rough idle (blocks were made of an aluminum with nickel, the Nikasil blocks), but the sulphur content in older blends of U.S gasoline is not an issue anymore. This car has served me well, and I STILL get compliments on it when I fill'r'up at the gas station.

You can't beat the classic BMW four round headlights look that these cars have. The V8s do have some problem areas (radiator, intake manifold gasket leaks, valve cover gaskets that leak with age, etc)but any buyer that does his/her homework and buys a solid car won't regret it.

Extremely reliable, and awesome performance. I am just changing the wheels, and getting a ltd slip diff. Besides that, this car is better than any new 2002 or 2003 below 40K. I have owned this vehicle for a few months now and I can honestly say I look forward to driving it everytime I drive. I just got some 17" M5 rims, so the car picks up the road a little more, but before when I had the 15" rims, it was the smoothest ride I could have ever imagined. It is also a very quick car , which I think is its best feature. I have had a few problems with the transmission so far, but I beleive that is due to it being 8 years old and is all part of owning a used car. The engine, however, is still running strong and I haven't had any problems with it other than the transmission.

What can I say? Fast, luxurious, ergonomic, loads of technology such as OBC (On-Board Computer) that tells you MPG and other stuff, pretty good handling for a sedan, and all around a great car to have. To this day, as soon as people step in the car the first thing they ask is, "what year is this car?" I tell them 1995 and jaws hit the floor. Ample rear space not to mention the ridiculous trunk space. Awesome stock sound system, comfortable leather seat and leather upholstery. Did I mention the V8 power? Haha!

Wonderful car with excellent build quality and loads of style. Can be made into a serious high performance vehicle with a few modifications.

This is a fantastic, low maintenance machine. A person with reasonable mechanical ability can diagnose and solve some of the problems which are few. I have had 2 e34 BMW and they have exceeded expectation. I had several Mercedes that always needed something ridiculously expensive. Both BMW have been very low maintenance. Stay away from the dealership and use a trusty mechanic and online parts and this car will cost you less than a Honda to keep up. I will always buy BMW.

After my 2006 Nissan Frontier was totalled my loan was paid off and I made out with 3000 dollars in my pocket. Instead of starting a new car loan I turned to used BMW's. I found a gem in (my new) 525i. Purchased with 188k plus miles for $2950 I stayed optimistic and I was right. This is beautiful and timeless design with excellent handling on any surface. It is unbelieveably smooth and comfortable. Previous owner had recently replaced water pump and radiator so that was out of the way. Only drawback is lack of power for a 6 cylinder but it's not a bother knowing I can corner it at 60mph without hittin the brakes!.. Not to mention the great fuel economy for its size. Find one,buy it, keep it.

Bought Al (Alpine White) in 2002 with over 100,000 on the odo, just turned 196,000. The car is solid, well constructed, and a joy to drive once you get it going. Overall average 21 MPG, 27 MPG on the highway at 80 MPH. Replaced several T-stats, radiator, most all of the suspension parts and bushings. Have had a few issues with power windows and seats. The engine has been bulletproof. The tranny is starting to slip in reverse. I get compliments all the time about how beautiful the car looks. It's a classic! I love the car and will drive it until the wheels fall off.

The absolute best car I have ever driven, and some of the cars I have driven include the Q45, Lexus LS400, Saab 95 and the Acura RL. The handling is unreal, it takes turns like you would not believe. I mean what can you say about the the ultimate driving machine, other than it really is the ultimate driving machine.

Excellent car! Bought it 2 years ago and the car now has 164K on it. No issues - just a belt change and a brake job. Total money spent on the car other than oil: 600. The car was ahead of its times, I think. It's got heated leather seats, speed sensitive windshield wipers, a comprehensive trip computer. Reliability is great, fuel economy is good and the ride is second to none. I love my cruiser!
