There are quite a few Technical Service Bulletins on this problem related to the air mixing damper shaft within the heating/AC system. The dealer should be able to readily call up all the instructions he needs to fix the problem. Looks like some little plasticky parts are involved and maybe an hour labor---at least just from looking at the instructions. So maybe couple hundred bucks? I had similar problems with my 2001 Saab 9-5, which we bought 1 yr old, 6yr/100K certified. Since then ~every 2-3 months something's broken down: -sunroof strut -radio display x 2 -front wheel bearing -ignition cassette : coincidentally also left me stranded in Boston, this time on busy I-93 in rush hour -paint peeled on front hood, fought w/ Saab for them to repaint whole hood -turbocharger replaced -trunk release -ignition ... I had both computers go out on my car with in a month. I had a fire both times that destroyed my catalytic converter also. The second time it also melted some of the wire harness on the bottom of my car. It cost me $3,000 to fix the car. I have 2001 95 with a 6 cylinder engine. Like you I am still scared the car will catch on fire ... Read More

I have a 2001 9-3 and last December my car died downtown Boston at a red light. Mechanic replaced the igntition cassette. I'm getting out of this car. SInce I've bought it, the alarm mysteriously kept going on and off all day long, the ignition cassette had to be repalced, the alternator went about 6 months after the ignition cassette and a month after that the AC compressor blew. This is ... Read More

Many Saab owners have been waiting for recall of the DIC module. It is a known problem. This unit sits atop the spark plugs. Some owners even carry a spare in the truck as it is a quick DIY changeout if required. Me?, I just play the DIC lottery. I think Saab's story is that they have been looking for a solution to this for awhile and are now waiting until ... Read More

Anybody know anything about this anticipated recall? I received a letter from Saab telling me that my vehicle (mine is a 6-cylinder but it also applies to 4 cylinders) might be equipped with a defective ignition discharge module (IDM). The letter basically says that Saab doesn't have replacement parts yet and are hoping to have enough to send out recall letters in March of 2006. Basically, a defective IDM can either ... Read More

HERES A LINK WITH 14 PICS OF NEW 9-5 Aero: http://www.rsportscars.com/eng/cars/saab_95.asp What a shame they couldnt of just done the tunning. The new rear end looks like an Avalon that matted with a Deville! Could they of made the rear park assist look any more like it came off an Escalade? It was so nice when it was hidden in the black trim piece.

Thanks for the photos. Although we have always owned Volvos (among others), SAABs I think have a nicer interior and are more fun. We went on a 400 mile trip over the fourth to ME in our Cross Country and my wife came back a day later in her friend's 9-5. She thought that the SAAB rode better and was a nicer touring vehicle. Incidentally, while in ME we saw lots ... Read More

I went to the local Saab dealer who has a certified 2001 SE V6 Wagon, 45K miles for sale. The certification adds 2 years and 50K miles to the warranty. By the time I do the math, the certified car will cost the same amount as what I would pay to buy out my leased car. I drove the certified car. Three things I did not like: road noise (the pavement ... Read More

I drove both the 4 and 6 and I preffered the 6 (auto trans). 6 is a much smoother engine....the 4 cyl was a bit buzzy and the torque of the 6 (vs the 4) meant that there was less downshifting. I leased my Arc 3.0t so I don't care about resale value in 2006...Saab's problem. There are some killer deals right now on 2003s..OMG....$6K to $7K off MSRP on window ... Read More

I decided on the 2000 Saab 9-5 SE instead of the 2001 Accord or Maxima. I am picking it up tomorrow. Thanks for the advice given. After test driving all three cars, I decided the Saab was much nicer and more fun to drive then the other two. The other big factor was the extended warranty. It's going to be covered by Saab until September 2006, which alleviated some of the ... Read More
