Olds Silhouette Engine and Transmission Problems

  • Transmission problems

    Written by: mikegk1 on Dec 2, 2012 12:23:49 PM

I have a 2000 Oldsmobile Silhouette Premier. The trasnmission has started to shift hard and is also throwing a torque converter code as well as a "maximum line shift" code when a diagnostic is run. From what I have gathered on here it may be the pressure control solenoid. Is this the most likely culprit or will I have to address the torque converter also? Also the van will at times ... I installed a 2000 Venture engine in my 1998 Venture. I had to strip the new engine down to the block and heads and reuse most of the original parts such as exhaust manifold, intake manifold w/fuel injection system, all sensors and engine mounts. The vehicles below use the LA1 engine that are probably interchangeable with some exceptions. In the case of the transmission, the same transmission was used in the ... Read More

Be sure it is serviced full with coolant. There are two bleeders on the engine that need to be opened during servicing. Also you could have installed a defective thermostat.

I have a 2000 Silhouette that the heat went out on and it also started getting coolant in the oil. I figured it had a stuck thermostat and the head gasket was leaking. I went and bought a new Thermostat, Bars Leak Head Gasket repair, and some coolant. I removed the old thermostat and put the housing back on, then I completely flushed the engine, heater core, and radiator. I went ... Read More

I have a 2000 Silhouette with the optional REAR AC unit that seems to have quit working - blows hot air. I was told from an Oldsmobile dealer that there is a "block in the H Block". Just wondering if anyone can shed some additional light on this, and what kind of fix I can perform in an attempt to resolve this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you did your research and found a nice ride! I like the Olds, it seems to handle better than the other of the triplets and has a lot of neat features. The bonus is that like you, I got a used one and you get a lot of vehicle for your money. Funny you mentioned Oldsmobile is your choice of car, I just bought a 2000 Intrigue from a ... Read More

I read virtually EVERY post in this forum as I was looking for a near-excellent condition Silhouette for my dog! I sold Oldsmobiles for 14 years and as a member of the Oldsmobile Club of America, it is the only make and model I would ever buy. After studying the posts and revisiting my experiences with selling Silhouettes, I decided on the GL version with the right side sliding door. I ... Read More

We have started having problems with the A/C. We live in Florida and use it frequently. The fan doe not seem to blow consistently with the same force. Sometimes on the 5 setting, it will blow you out of your seat and other times it has to be set on 5 to feel any air at all. Not a consistent problem, very sporadic. Needless, to say, mechanics cannot find anything wrong ... Read More

I have been looking at 2001 Silhouette GLS and Premier vans in black with chrome wheels and two-tone leather and they look really nice for a minivan. Previously I had a 1997 Grand Voyager that was my first van and it was a great first experiance. Then, back in October 2000 I traded that van in for a 2000 Chrysler 300M. If you do wreck your vehicle, I would hope that your insurance would pay for the repair as opposed to having that money come out of your pocket (I would hope).
