My guess is that the fluid had not been changed for a while, or a different AT fluid than what Mitsubishi specified was used. Similar thing happened to me at around 110K on my Galant (a 2001 with 160K and still going strong :-) ). At around 60 mph I heard a "whoosh" from under the hood and the car slowed down; the "check engine" light came on. I took it ... Read More

This problem happened to me as well on my black 2001 galant... my wife was skeptical until I told her I'd prove it... on a random drive to the mall, we cruzed around the parking lot and i swore to her we'd find another black galant with the same problem... she laughed at me but sure enough after 3 minuets we spotted a 2002 black galant with major clear coat cracking ... That's a sad situation with you're Galant. But Galants are very reliable indeed. Things go wrong and some mechanics make the situation worst. Some dealers customer service makes you wish to never go back there. That is the case with a lady friend of mine and her 2001 Nissan Sentra. Mitsubishi car's are reliable. Just like any other manufacturer it had his "not so good" models. But they have improve the quality noticeably. Galant's previous 1997 were known of body integrity issues. 1998+ Galant's didn't encounter such issues, except for black colored 98-03 Galants. Please take a look at my post #2150. Although I don't believe it would be useful, since it's for a 2001 Galant. I think the model changed in 1999. But at least you'll see the tool-free for Mitsubishi, maybe they can help for a reasonable price. I hope that u have the code though, otherwise I've heard it's not cheap to go to the dealer for this issue. Good Luck!

Your engine has hydraulic lifters that automatically adjust. Try using a thicker weight of oil and make sure you are changing the oil every 3k. This should help lessen or stop the noise. You might also want to consider adding some Lucas oil stabilizer. This product has worked wonders on tired noisy engines. A noisy lifter is not going to trash your engine though so I would think twice before spending ... Read More

I think all this talk about Mitsubishi sales being low enough for them to go belly-up are a bit exaggerated. Yes, they aren't selling as well as they did back in 2001. But they are still selling plenty of cars to stay in business. For example, the highly regarded VW Passat has only sold 9893 units in the first 3 months of 2004 whereas 14,528 Galants have been sold. Mitsubishi is at its best when releasing a new model after it has had a few years to study the competition. The redesigned 97 Mirage had all of the good stuff the much improved 93-97 Corolla contained, at a much lover price. Much like the somewhat decontented 97-2001 Camry, it seemed to me that the current Galant was not as much of an improvement from the mid-90s Galant. I look forward ... Read More
