Hello everyone. Glad to join this club. I bought this 1998 LS last year with 105K miles on it. Everything looks great, except there are couple of times it wouldn't start. Most of time it happened on raining days or very cold days. But after couple of hours, it can start without jump cable. I heard a clicking sound when it had problems. I asked a guy in auto parts store. ... Read More
I have my 98 ls 400 at the lexus dealer right now for the 90mile service and timming belt and water pump. The service tech just called me and said they do not replace the cam seals only the crank seal. He said that they do the timming belt from the side of the engine and the cam seals would have to be done from the front of the engine at ... Read More
Thanks again for all who helped me with their great advices on my starting problem. A couple of weeks ago I got fed up and decided to have the started replaced, as most of the opinions I received here and from other sources indicated that was the problem. Called about 5 - 6 Southern California dealers and received rate quotes of between $950 - $1,372 for parts & labor. Called my ... Read More
Hi All, Some of what is listed about the LS long term issues are true. I have a 1992 with 89K miles so let me give you my experience.. 1) Timing Belt replacement is standard at 90K..Virtually every car needs this. The 90K service for my car was $1500, but that included a full 90K service, timing belt, water pump and Power steering pump replacement. 2) As far as the Power ... Read More
I have a 1998 LS 400 with 69k miles on it. When I toggle the TCS button to turn the system on / off, nothing appears on my dash. The slip diff does seem to be working since it has appeared on my dash during a couple of snow storms this year. My question, does it sound like a major repair to get the TCS to work properly? Should this only ... Read More
The current LS is not fairly new. It was unveiled in January 2000 at the Detroit Auto Show and went on sale in the fall of 2000 as a 2001. It is now entering its fourth year. Lexus does not have long model cycles. Typically their cars run for five years, with a cosmetic freshening in the fourth year. So, what Lexus is doing follows their history. Compare this to Mercedes ... Read More

I do not own an LS 430, but rather a 1995 ES 300. But I wanted to mention a few points. First, I believe the LS 430 was rated the car with the fewest defects of ANY car by JD Power. Second, my family has owned several first-year Lexus models, including a 1990 LS 400 and a 1998 GS 300. Neither has had even little problems. While some of you may ... Read More
This is what I found at the site: The BMW 5 Series and the Lexus LS 400 came out on top in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s latest crash tests of six large-size luxury cars. The vehicles -- which also included the Mercedes E Class, Lincoln Continental, Infiniti Q45 and Cadillac Seville -- were put through the institute’s 40 mph frontal offset crash test. Officials then evaluated how well each ... Read More
