Re: 1997 BMW 328i [spb3]

With a stick I'd say 200,000-250,000 miles easy. Perform an oil change every 7,500 miles(Mobil 1 0W-40 or 5W-40 and BMW filter), fresh BMW brand coolant every 2-3 years, transmission and diff oil every 50K, and brake fluid(DOT4) every two years. The 1997 328i had most of the bugs worked out by then; there might be some issues with the heating/air conditioning control panels, but instructions for inexpensively fixing them are ... Read More

Completely unpredictable IMO at that mileage. Statistically (you know, like the average human lifespan), for modern cars it's about 175K. Some live older, some drop dead on the way to work. Might be an okay buy if you don't pay too much--no more than you can afford to lose in an afternoon. Maybe $2500 to $3000 tops? The problem with high mileage German used cars is that they aren't cheap to ... Read More

How many miles can I expect to get out of a 1997 BMW 328i with 160,000 miles in mint condition running great and a service the vehicle on a regular basis.

I don't believe your car has an oil level sensor. The Check Engine light is almost certainly indicating a problem in the emissions system of the car. It could be something as simple as a loose fuel cap. If you take your car to Autozone they will read the codes for free. If you do that let me know what codes were triggered and I can give you a better idea ... Read More

1997 BMW 328i

I have a 97 BMW 328i. If my oil gets low will that trigger the "Check Engine" light. I have a color coded bar on the dash that works fine but this light has suddenly come on. The car is running fine. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

"Thanks." No problem. :) 330i: Nice car. Haven't had a chance to drive the new 3 yet, but I am looking forward to it. Seeing as how dealerships here are closed on Sundays, tomorrow is a good day to do that. Exterior, meh. Interior, bleh. Well, it is not so much bleh, there are some good attributes in there, however when you combine it altogether, like the door panels and then ... Read More

That's an interesting write up... I feel both cars are in the same class but they're completely different cars, you know; the same but different. For bells, whistles, and luxury I would choose the Lexus hands down. For performance, roadfeel, and cornering the BMW hands down. You do put a spin on this whole discussion by taking a lot out of context too. Seems you don't like BMW's, and I've never ... Read More

Oh, I know you are not joking. Just last night me and my buddy went cruising in his 323ci, a 1997 I believe. Let me tell you, it is not a really fast car by any means but it is a fun car to drive and corner on. I got to drive his car and I had quite a blast driving it. BMWs are very, very fun to drive, espeically with ... Read More

BMWs on the Brain
Written by: nyccarguy on Jul 11, 2002 12:41:56 PM
After reading edmunds' history on the 3 series, I guess I had BMWs on the brain (for a change) last night when I went to sleep. I had a strange dream that I was driving around in a 1997 E36 318ti that had the 16" SP wheels & suspension from the E36 328i and the motor from an E30 M3. I need to seek help!

I agree. Film will still be around, like manual trans., but will be for enthusiasts. For now, though, digital still can't match top quality film photography for resolution. It gets VERY close, if you use a $5,000 digital camera. I like interchangeable lenses, and I now have a pretty extensive (and expensive) collection of Nikon lenses. I'd have to get a D1 body to shoot digital with my lenses, and that ... Read More

The 1997-1998 3er coupes are great cars. The 318is has the M44 four cylinder engine. It's pretty much bulletproof. I would not get a 318 with an automatic due to the fact that you need to keep the engine above 2500 rpm to extract the best performance out of it. The 323is and 328is have the proven and reliable M52 six-the main difference in the engines is their displacement. The five ... Read More
