I have an A6 with 115,000 miles. I had the battery replaced - not at the dealer - and the mechanic was unable to get the radio to work because, he said, didn't have the computer code. I called the dealer and they told me I'd have to take it in and have them take the radio out and get the codes off the radio and reinstall it. All at a ... Read More
Greetings Dalia1, This may very well be to late but here goes: The Automatic Gear shift lever release is controlled by several devices. 1. There is a sensor in the Ignition switch area ID's the Key 2a. The Ignition switch is encoded so when you put the key in the switch it knows if its the correct key for that vehicle. 2b. The ignition key is encoded so the ignition switch ... Read More
Hi dalia1, For starters you may want to go to "Erwin.com" for Audi America buy an hours worth of time and research your "Locked in Park" problem there. If your 95 has a Locking theft system then it gets a bit complicated and could be a number of thing. As a comparison only: Here's what I hear when I start my 2005 A6 Quattro with anti-theft system and Tiptronic Automatic Trans: ... Read More
Hi all... my car is stuck in park. Replaced brake switch, lights work. Anybody have suggestions? What's the second black switch under the light switch on the brake pedal??
Hello all. I'm a newb to forums of any sort so bear with me. I currently own 2 Audis that I call Jekyl and Hyde. Jekyl is a pearl white 1996 A6 FWD V6 automatic with over 200,000 miles. Physically, great shape for the miles; no rust anywhere, mild wear on the driver's seat only, body straight, no leaks even on the sunroof. I don't think the owner had anyone else ... Read More
Hi I have an audi A6 avant 2.0 which is heavily leaking water. I know where the leeak is from. It is leaking from a plastic t-piece which connects to the engine. One end of the component is square this is where it connects to the engine. The other end is round and has a large (pipe approx 1"-1 1/2") connected to it. From the T-piece is a slightly smaller pipe. ... Read More
I have a 1995 a6 quattro. The first time it is started in the morning the brake pedal goes to the floor and I have no brakes. I turn the car off and start it back up and the brakes work fine. Any idea's what could be the problem
Due to a looonnnggg lead time, I was forced to keep my A6 for, hmm 41 months, 5 months beyond the contract term. By the time I turned it in it had gone faithfully for about 60,000 miles. Three sets of tires and the only real issue with it was the first few months where every month I had to have the pushbutton start replaced. Actually when I drove in to ... Read More
I think you're going to need the repair manual to figure this out. Basically the key operates a little cam that works a key lock solenoid that sends a signal to the gear shifter. Cars have different systems but it sounds like your Audi has a mechanical/electrical function in the steering column. I'm sure the Audi dealer's parts counter has a diagram of all the parts on microfiche or on CD, ... Read More
try to replace the fuse(s) for the dash lights, etc. Should be very inexpensive ($10!) Not sure if Audi has them all labeled in the owners manual. Don't let the dealer charge you for a new dash if you haven't had someone look at that first. Same was happening on my Saab (when it was 6yo). Otherwise it could be a defective dash illumination switch.
As others have said, the maintenance and repairs for the cars you have listed could make a 10 year hold an expensive proposition. That said, I'd consider an Acura RL over the Audi A6. I own a 2004 TL 6-speed and it's quicker and more fun to drive than the RL, but not as luxurious. The RL has been a very tough sell for Acura, so good deals should be available. ... Read More
WOW. I had the following (not a complete list): 1995 S6 1997 A8 1999 A6 2.8 2000 A6 4.2 comfort 2001 A6 4.2 sport 2003 allroad 2.7T 2005 A6 3.2 with 18" wheels and 245 x 40 x 18" tires At the same time, my wife had multiple A4's, three TT's and one BMW X3 3.0. The A6 is the quietest of the bunch (including the A8), it also is both ... Read More
My situation almost exactly when I plunked down a deposit to order an M35X. Lower lease payments, MORE technology (don't know about "better," though) and "close enough" to German feel for jazz (at $200 per month less, hell yes!) Then Audi, for an almost $3K more expensive model came in UNDER the Infiniti price on the lease -- and "all I had to do" was threaten to buy the Infiniti, which ... Read More
. . .there are certainly times when I have felt my 255HP A6 3.2 needs more power. I just can't remember them. I think the power is adequate. It goes faster than the vast majority of cars on the road and it gets to speed more quickly than most too. I had three Audi V8 equipped cars and six Audi turbo cars, one of them a V6, two 5 cylinder versions ... Read More
Selling England by the Pound -- Genesis. You win the cupie doll, Pat! Here in Cincinnati, the new generation of BMW's with that spanky new "35" twin turbo engine are rolling out -- at this point, the 335 sedan and coupes are RWD, but already the 328 is offered with AWD and next year the X drive option will be added for about $1900. It promises to be a brisk seller. ... Read More
Back in the days when smoking (in a car) was even done, a friend of mine -- a smoker -- would kid me and say "Mark gets a new car every time the ash tray gets full." I'll ask my wife if she would like another child, already trained to boot! Thanks for your input. We also have an 2005 A6 4.2 S-Line and a 2005 A8L W12. I have always owned Audis and find them exquiste to own and drive. You are right about the 1995 S6. A very rare and special car if you can get one. I know several ACNA members that own one and ... No, not me, but if you're looking to adopt a 55 year old and loan him your S6 (to take his wife out, natch) from time to time, I'm your man. I really really like my 2005 A6 3.2, really. My favorite Audi, however, of the 28, was NOT my A8, not even my two A6 4.2's -- nope, my favorite to this day remains my 1995 S6 with all options. ... Read More
You and I are of the adequate is ample crowd, perhaps for the same perhaps for dissimilar reasons -- and I have scoured the web for automotive journalists and there are at least 10 quotes (pertaining to the 3.2) that praise both the refinement AND power of the A6 with the 3.2. Although the range of accelerative times for the 6 cylinder LPS crowd is up to 1 second, mostly the ... Read More
I think you are correct, the answer in part is FDR, final drive ratio. Given the price differences and lease sub-venting, at least thus far and in the US and in Cincinnati, I can see little reason to go for the 525 even with the stick shift. You know, though, I got the 3.2 Audi thinking it was going to be less than every other car in the class. Even though ... Read More
. . .Audi has reason to look its competition in the eyes and proclaim "we are in the Premium Class." However, Audi is still a relative newcomer to the Premium or LPS class. It only takes a few minutes to read posts here (on several edmunds blog topic sites) and on other Internet based blogs to get a sense that despite statistics to the contrary, Audi still has a bit of ... In our garage, currently, is one Audi A6 3.2, and one BMW X3 3.0, both 2005's, both ordered cars. My A6 is Cambridge Green Pearl with the Amaretto Premium leather. While I did order the $1,000 wheel and tire upgrade, I somehow had a "moment" and did not order the sport suspension which would have added $250 to a car that MSRP'd at $53,286 at the end of June 2005. Congrats on your new Audi -- the 4.2 is the sweetest sounding engine, and once you hit 1,000 miles you can floor it and really hear what this sounds like. The "lack of lag" however does beg me to ask the question: the past, say, 50,000 miles of driving have been with an automatic or a manual? I am now into day 2.5 of using the tip mode -- the responsiveness ... Read More
Advance key? At the tender age of 53, I can actually tell you that I personally remember my parent's car -- sometime in the 1950's -- having a pushbutton starter button. The new cars from Europe and Japan seem to be rushing and gushing about "pushbutton start." I understand the advances in that the key fob contains a transmitter and a chip that identifies "you" and can set the car to ... Read More
went to look at a 1995 audi a6 quattro. looked and ran pretty good. one problem though was a huge puddle of water behind the driver's side seat and the area around the sunroof wasn't wet. so i cant think of what it might be. if anyone knows of problems with leaks or what it might be i would greatly appreciate it.
I am struck by some other differences between the German and Japanese "dealer crowd" that have become more evident over the past few weeks. Since we have been buying almost nothing but Audis since 1977 -- and from the same dealer, same salesrep all along (although the dealer sold out to a "corporation" a couple of years ago) -- and since my wife recently bought a BMW X3 from a "owned ... I am not anti-Audi, or anti-Audi's new A6. I am disappointed with Audis go to market strategy insofar as it apparently affected me with respect to the "value proposition" or TOC (total ownership cost -- and based on the Business Week article I was interviewed for, NOT alone in this regard). Indeed despite my newfound affection for the Infiniti M35X, I would have paid [a little bit] more for the Audi ... Read More
The Acura dealership in Central Savannah is very good per my sister. She has bought 2 vehicles there: a 1995 Legend and a 2001 RL. She'll be getting one of the new RL's later this year. I must agree with a number of the recent comments made and would like to interject from a current buyers prospective. I am 3 months away from the termination of my ’02 A4 lease and was up until recently, looking forward to the ’05 A6 as my next car. As has been well documented, the launch of the A6 has been less than spectacular bordering on non-existent. I first saw the ... Read More
The S6, post 1995, has ONLY been offered in the US in Avant form. I suspect this is to make certain that no one confused the S6 with "R" versions. The car companies place a high ego premium on certain things: BMW = "M" for instance. I believe that Audi has three or four auto performance lines in mind. Note: the "S" as Avant only in the US was ... Read More
Comment 5074 has me very intrigued - I had thought that there were no S6's sold in the USA after the 1995 MY - I have seen some newer S6 2.3 turbo's imported from Canada, and once spotted a V8 S6 for sale on EBay, a German-market model. I haven't had an Audi for a long time, and not since I lived in the UK. I've been driving a 4wd ... Read More
I can't comment on the S4, but can on the S6. Almost at the moment my pen was poised over the lease agreement for my 2003 allroad, a "leftover" S6 (which was, in 2002, only in Avant form -- and I am not confusing S6 with the RS anything, FYI) was "offered" to me for a test drive. The S6 MSRP was considerably more than my all possible optioned allroad 2.7T ... Read More
I do not absolutely know that every European car of recent vintage that uses the Audi auto transmission manufacturer has the "lag" problem -- I do know that Audi is NOT the only company with customers mentioning "lag." I would be the first to agree that NOT being alone in this regard is no excuse and at the prices charged by Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Volvo, etc., this is not "expected." ... Read More
I recently acquired a 95 audi with about 109K miles. The car seems in a fairly decent shape except some odd idling noise. Does anyone know of a good non-dealership german car shop around central jersey? ksso
Run away from this scenario. The 2.7T is a great performing engine -- the 2001 may have some parts issues that, although probably able to be CPO'd to 100K or 2 years, still makes a newer car less money. The brake rotors on the 2001's are notorius for warping. The 2.7T engine will need a serpentine belt replacement by 60K miles (this is a four figure job). Around 60K miles, maintenance ... Read More

The Audi allroad will be produced through the 21st week of May 2005. Apparently, then, the plant will be retooled for production of the new A6 avant. The allroad -- by all commerical measures -- has been a failure. It has been the best car I have ever had (or tied for first place with my 1995 Audi S6). My allroad is quick, fast, quiet, comfortable, decent in the sportyness metric ... Read More
The Audi A6 2.7T has been the quickest Audi in North America -- and although it no longer holds that title what with the new S4 and RS 6; a brand spanking new A6 2.7T -- high output edition [sic] -- will be, I'd wager, just about the biggest bargain out there in the 2004 model year. Now, you need to understand that the rumor mill pretty much has concluded that ... Read More

Yesterday, we took a long test drive in an allroad (Tiptronic, 2.7T engine). Jared, here's a complete list of Audi platforms from Audi AG. The W8 does ride on a DIFFERENT larger platform than other Passats, the same one used for the A6. I discounted it until I looked up this table again, and apparently, it is bigger and longer. The same photo's are ... Read More
Thanks to both of you guys for being so informative and, indeed, so incredibly helpful to neophytes like myself who have never leased before. Automophile indicated that mph =2400x .002 or 2.8% in one example. What does the 2400 represent, and is it a constant? So many interesting comments on the A6 2.7T. JK Ralph, at Northland Audi in Cincinnati, told me the 2002 A6 2.7T has a great deal of the look of a 2001 A6 4.2 -- flared front fenders, below the grill spoiler/air intake, etc. Now this tells me that it would be possible for the tire size to be 255 x 40 x 17. But, based on past experience with Audi's, they will probably have a somewhat smaller tire -- ... Read More

The Audi A6 models 2.7T and 4.2 use different brakes than the 2.8. I had a 1999 A6 2.8 quattro, kept it about 15,000 miles and never any problems with the brakes. I then leased a 2000 A6 4.2 -- new rotors were required at 1,000 miles -- they chattered and purred and vibrated from mile 1. New front rotors again about 12,000 miles later -- for a total of three ... Read More
I just bought a used 1995 Audi A6 and was wondering if anyone else owns it. I haven't seen too many of them on the road. CVT is coming to US in 2001 on some 2002 Audis -- as far as I know, only on the relatively lower torque models -- for the A6 this means the 3.0V6, but not the turbo V6 or the V8. I say the following as a loyal Audi owner and almost promoter: Get an extended warranty on your A6 before 50,000 miles (the limit of the original factory warranty). There MAY be a 25,000 add-on warranty avail from Audi of America (I think it is between $500 - $1,000) which would be the cost of one (1) relatively minor repair after the 50K mark. Yes it may turn out ot be ... Read More
I would say that your reliability is not just "pretty good" -- I would say it is a very solid "good." Maybe even a smidge more than good, in fact.
