I seem to have a lemon right off the lot

I made my first Volvo purchase of an XC60 on April 21st and my buying experience was great. I worked with a Volvo dealership near where I live and I really appreciated the transparency of the purchase process. Within 24 hours of taking delivery of my new car, the check engine light came on and my car has spent most of the days I have owned it back with the dealership. They have been great in terms of giving us a loaner, but at this point, we are 25 days into ownership, and our car has been in the shop for 14 of them, with the only day we didn't have issues being the evening we drove it off the lot. Our Volvo Dealership has been a good advocate, but there doesn't seem to be an end in sight other than maybe we hit 30 days out-of-service, or one more unsuccessful repair attempt and it could be declared a lemon. Every manufacturer produces lemons, let's be honest with ourselves about that. But as a first time Volvo owner, this is not what I had hoped for from a world-renowned brand. Read reviews and do your homework. More issues have emerged as this process has played out, most of them electrical issues and infotainment related. But there is also a concerning issue with the car not engaging in park consistently when the parking button is pressed. The most troubling thing is that the Factory Trained Specialist cannot seem to resolve the root issue. I will follow up this review with the outcome, so customers know how Volvo deals with a vehicle that has seemingly unresolvable issues right off the lot. Still optimistic that they will make it right sooner than later.

We bought a Volvo XC60 B5 Plus Dark, and not even 800 miles later the engine overheated on the side of the interstate. Volvo was great about fixing it that time. We got the car back and it was fine, until about 2200 miles and the exact same thing happened. Only this time the engine seized. We have been waiting two months to get our car back!!!

My wife has had 6 new Volvos over the years with no major issues. The 2023 XC60 we purchased in March of ‘23 is by far the worse vehicle we ever owned. Shortly after taking deliver she started to have “software” problems from the phone not being able to link to a complete shout down of any sound in the car, from the radio to even the turn signals. This has happen numerous times. We also have had the vehicle in for check engine issues. 6 times to date. One was on the evap system. There are 2 sensors for this system but the dealership was only allowed to replace one at a time based on the warranty. The service advisor said the second will probably have to be replaced but Volvo would not confer it till it faulted. A couple of weeks later that happened. Volvo knew it would but didn’t care if I had to make a second trip in to have that fixed. Oh, of course that part was back ordered. I now have it back into the dealership for anther check engine light on. The dealership has been very understanding. However the brand, Volvo, knew they had issues with there vehicles but they were shipped and sold anyway. Guess there policy is to sell them first then have the dealerships deal with constant software issues, mechanical problems and the inconvenience it causes there customers. It unfortunate that a once prestigious company has now stooped to this current level of unreliability. We were loyal to this brand. No more. This will be the last ever purchase from this company. You don’t push off this type of unreliability without consequences. I’m only one customer but the dealership is telling me we are not alone. I will tell everyone that will listen about the downturn Volvo has taken.

I am writing this in disbelief currently. My wife and I purchased this vehicle because we have a little baby on the way. We decided to step up a class in vehicle for safety and reliability features. We have CLEARLY made the wrong decision. The week after driving it off the lot, there was an issue with the "hybrid" battery and we had to take it back to the dealership. They said they couldn't find any issues and that they just gave it a little charge. "That should fix the issue". Fast forward 2 months to Christmas eve - We start the car in the morning because it was a little cold. We left it running for about 10 minutes or so before getting into it. When we started backing up an alert on the dash popped up in red stating "12V Battery Critical Charging Fault STOP SAFELY". We were unable to drive the car from there and it would no longer start. The tow driver couldn't get the car started either and on top of that they couldn't even get it into neutral to get it on the tow truck. 6 hours of our Christmas Eve was spent having our 3-month-old car towed back to the garage. I just wish Volvo was more upfront with the issues and did not give the owners the run around. Someone at the dealership said this happens to some of the cars on the lots and the "fix" is to leave them running for 5 hours?!? Are you kidding me? No one has time for that. Sounds like a recall to me if they cant figure it out. As of today, we still have a loaner and there is no answer, fix for the issue. If these issues continue, I will be forced to file a complaint with the BBB and see what Volvo can do for me. I cant have my wife and child on the side of the road because the car is having some issues. That just isn't safe by any stretch of the imagination.

Volvo cars have left me disappointed when it comes to reliability. Unfortunately, their service and customer care only add to the frustration and make you question your decision to buy a Volvo. Let me share my personal experience, and you can be the judge. One chilly morning in mid-December, my new XC60 Recharge unexpectedly shut down for no apparent reason. After reporting the issue, it took roadside assistance a whopping 12 hours to arrive. Imagine being stuck in the middle of nowhere for that long. When they finally showed up, they attempted various fixes but to no avail. Ultimately, they had to tow my car to the service center where I initially purchased it. To my dismay, the service center neglected my car for the first four days without even offering a loaner vehicle, despite my repeated requests. This was quite disheartening considering they had claimed to be a premium brand when I purchased the car. In reality, their service fell short and felt more like a budget option. After spending over a week in the service center, I was finally asked to pick up my car. However, my happiness quickly turned into disappointment when the dashboard started showing errors within 10 minutes of driving. I had to return the car the very next day for further repairs. As of my latest update on January 31, 2023, my car is still in service for the third time in the past 45 days. In fact, during the last 45 days, I have only had my car with me for a mere 3 days; the rest of the time, it has been at Palo Alto Volvo Service. Please do not assume that my case is an isolated incident. If you visit Twitter and search for tweets about Volvocars, you'll find numerous similar experiences shared by others. It's disheartening to see a brand with such potential fall short in terms of reliability and customer support.

Fantastic car, comfortable, powerful, excellent on rough roads and long road trips. Love the OTA updates and the additional features they’ve brought to the car. We live in a place with tons of snow and rain throughout the year and this thing eats it all up like it’s nothing. Not sure where all the claims of electrical and mechanical complaints are coming from but I’ve got 5600+ miles on the extended range edition so far without a single issue. Love the Android auto system, generally just yell at Google to do something like play music, makes call, adjust the seat or wheel heating, find something on the navigation and it just works. I’ve owned a 2011 V50, a 2016 XC70, a 2019 XC40, and now this XC60 and not had a SINGLE mechanical or electrical issue with any of them. Put well over 80k on each and 210 on the V50 and they all kept going strong. I’ll consider the Polestar 3 only because it’s basically a Volvo and I don’t need all the seats in the EX90. Elegant, powerful, and reliable. Couldn’t ask for more except a better charging infrastructure in condo buildings…

I bought a 2023 XC60 plug-in hybrid (Recharge) three months ago and will never look at another BMW, AUDI, VW or Mercedes Benz. It helps that my husband and I are longtime users of Google products; we are completely at home asking google to change the heat, fan, radio station, find a destination or play a tune from youtube music! Our hands never leave the steering wheel. In the three months I've had the car, I have only filled it once at a gas station thanks to the 43 miles of EV range we get. Sometimes it's 47 miles in warmer New England weather. Recharge vehicles come with two types of wall chargers, but we use the 220 exclusively and get a full charge in 5 hours. Fortunately we have a garage! Yes, they're expensive, but it feels like this might be a 'forever' car for this 70+ year old in CT.

We have never owned a Volvo but we’re committed to a plug in hybrid SUV & the Volvo met our expectations best. It’s a very different car than our old Acura MDX (which we loved), so we are getting used to a lot of new items. That said we are liking the car after its first few weeks. Great safety features, plug in is easy, peppy drive & easy to handle. Glad we leased it to take advantage of a $7500 rebate off MSRP!

Surprisingly quiet and yet sporty. Surprising turning radius. I anticipated that it would be quick, but the traffic merging and passing power are surprising even at highway speeds. The transition from electric to gas is seamless. Comfortable for long rides -- we recently traveled over a thousand miles in two days and felt rested when we arrived. The safety equipment is an added bonus. Most of our driving is around town and we had the car for 3 weeks before we added a quarter of a tank of gas. The PHEV feature adds to the economy, quiet and power of the vehicle. Easy to drive and good vision for driver.

I had been eyeing this car for a while. I really wanted a car that was comfortable and just easy to drive and I got exactly that! I also test drove Mercedes and BMW and loved the interior design and simplicity of the Volvo. It’s peppier to drive than I expected and I love the understated luxury of the car. Plenty of space in both the front and back seats and trunk space is good for the size of the car. I do not find the infotainment system difficult at all, it works just like an iPhone. In fact, I like the car for the simplicity of the controls… I hate cars that are filled with unnecessary buttons. Would definitely recommend this car to others!

Bought my 2023 XC60 several weeks ago and I love it. I read most of the complaints were about the Infotainment but I have not had any issue downloading and playing software. My only complaint is the first screen on Audiowagon which keeps asking for access to read the USB drive with my music. My car has been updated with the newest software. It rides well and with several weeks of over 100 degrees temperatures no performance issues. It's roomy and enjoy driving it. So I have to say i'm a happy camper with my Volvo.

I purchased a 2022 XC60 T8 Inscription with the Bright color option last year. I did benefit from the $5400 Fed Tax Credit, which bought the overall price down to an acceptable level. Unfortunately, it did not have the Extended range battery, and I only got appx.20 miles on pure electric mode, before switching over to the gas mode. There were also a few other options that I wish I could have got (ie: larger battery, air-ride suspension). So I traded in my 22 model, and special ordered a new 23 model from the factory with everything I wanted including the larger 38 mile range battery. What a huge difference this has made in my everyday driving. There are too may functional things I love about 2023 XC60 Ultimate T8 to list. It's just pure fun to drive.

This car runs and drives incredibly smoothly. Power from the base turbo 4-cyl is plentiful, but gas mileage is a bit less than we expected. Getting around 21 mpg. It's super comfortable, the heated seats and steering wheel heat fast and very evenly. The Android based tech took a day or two to get used to (we are Apple users), but it works very well. Apple CarPlay works seamlessly.

Fourth and Final Volvo

Michelle, 05/31/2024

This is the fourth and final Volvo I will own. Overall, it is a very nice car, but compared to my 2020 xc60, it falls flat. Why you may ask? Let me tell you. 1. The Google infotainment system is a HUGE step backwards. It overheats and has to be cooled, not ideal if you live in a warm climate. The sound will go out for no reason, which requires a reset of the infotainment system while in park. The menu is a little bulky to navigate and it seems to take my eyes off the road way more than it should. 2. Unless you pony-up for the Harmon Kardon sound system (which was amazing on my 2020) the standard stereo doesn’t even offer a balance and fade control. $55k and I have less controls on my stereo than my kids used Subaru. 3. The drive modes are no longer available. The Sport mode on my 2020 was a thrill to drive, it is surely missed. 4. The drivers display only features navigation. For safety’s sake, the entertainment info should be displayed here as an option. On the positive side, the car drives great has a luxurious feel to it. I have taken it on long road trips and have been very comfortable. The AWD handles great, and gets me through the rain and snow with ease. Our local Volvo dealership has been great to work with, always professional. If Volvo can dump the Google Infotainment system and go back to the 2020 features, I’d most likely buy my fifth xc60. Do better Volvo.

Wow, I am surprised to see so many negative reviews. Makes me wonder if they are all legitimate. My experience is just the opposite. I purchased my 2023 B5 Core in late November 2023 and have put approximately 3000 miles on it without a single hiccup. The Google-powered infotainment system works flawlessly, no electrical or mechanical issues, and my gas mileage is better than expected. In suburban driving, I get around 27.5 miles per gallon, and on the highway 31-32 mpg at average speeds of 70-75 mph. The mild hybrid system gives it a nice extra push when I need it. Matter of fact it feels a little quicker than my previous car, a 2020 V60CC. All of the safety systems keep me honest and make me look like a safer driver. Best of all, it is supremely comfortable All in all, it is a great car and I am happy to have it.

Volvo went back in time with google. It keeps telling me it can’t perform the functions I used in my prior Volvos that had the Volvo app powered by Sensus. The Google apps do not compare with the functionality of Sensus. Volvo says an update is coming soon, but doesn’t say if it will be like the superior Sensus app features or something else. Disappointed in Volvo decision to replace Sensus with Google in the 2023 models, the Volvo app is nearly useless now without Sensus. Google maps is the only improvement that is worthwhile.

Pros: Very solid feeling, good power (especially if you add polestar tuning to the B5 engine), decent space, good visibility, pilot assist is pretty solid on long drives, comfortable seats, material quality inside is nice. Cons: eCall SOS button, GPS, LTE stopped working at <9K miles, unclear timeline as to when volvo will get the part to fix Lots of buzzes and rattles, particularly from the headliner, undercarriage, and trunk. Some fixed by Volvo after multiple visits. Infotainment glitches & resets & for some reason cannot be updated OTA (early 2023 models) Auto stop start once caused a stall at a traffic light that required a restart of the car Transmission can be very laggy when trying to pass & activating polestar mode requires clicking a few menus deep.

This is a downgrade from 2019 version

Picked it up in early 2023 when I was forced to turn in my 2019. Immediately 2 things bothered me. 1) Only One Driving mode that is equivalent to eco mode in 2019. Not a problem on the highway but it lags when you floor it. Miss performance mode for short on-ramps and merges. 2) The app was not fully baked at delivery. No driving journal at time of pickup. Manually tracking work and personal miles is annoying after having a driving journal in 2019. Driving Journal finally became active 6 months later. These 2 issues made my new car inferior to the 4 year old car I had to give back. At 10 months I had battery issues that required all batteries to be changed out. The issue put vehicle in protective snail mode. Couldn't drive faster than 15 mph as I limped home. Couldn't make it through an intersection before the light turned red. This was more dangerous than just breaking down.

So had a 21 xc60 which had sensus system, car did everything it said on the box, excellent on fuel (diesel),but got written off when hit by another car, recieved a 23 xc60 ultimate b5, the introduction of AAOS system is a joke, there are numerous software issues, to add insult, you are paying a subscription for google and it cant even supply uptodate maps, limited to a few apps from google play store, and in australia you cant get the google assistant "australian" voice, but if you live in the USA you can. The removal of buttons for drive modes, buttons on steering wheel that now do nothing(used to do pilot assist etc). Tiny icons for heater, having to dig into submenus just to access stuff, voice commands dont necessarily operate required functions.Decontenting of what used to be standard equipment now forces you to upgrade to higher spec models AND still add "packs". Long and short of it, if you want a volvo, buy a SENSUS operating system one and you will have more features, more reliability and obviously cheaper cost, just ensure you buy with some kind of warranty for peace of mind.I will sell mine and go back to the older ones!! Update...i have just discovered you can NOT read or hear any "old" messages , so say you recieved a msg two days ago, and you want to look at it again, there is no provision to display /access,whereas the old senus system you could, i mean honestly this is such a basic function found in any car (much cheaper)

This is my second XC60. The ride, the coast of this vehicle down from Eisenhower tunnel is unmatched. 25MPG may not seem impressive but the acceleration is more than enough. I am befuddled by the bad reviews. I drove one for 6 years and am very, very happy.

Total disappointment for this overpriced vehicle that has multiple major issues. Found dead on driveway within five days of buying it brand new and driving home from dealer, less than 100 miles driven. Dealer said it required a “software” upgrade - and an estimated 30 days to repair! Of course, that tune changed when I immediately demanded my money back. RECAP: brand new vehicle requiring major software fixes! As for the confused infotainment system, I still await the bright spot Volvo technicians to explain why I must negotiate multiply infotainment screens to SIMPLY turn on the radio that randomly turns off or on each time the vehicle ignition is turned off or on. Must do this only while safely pulled off the road and parked so as not to cause major traffic hazards while being distracted and trying to sort through multiple infotainment screens. As far as that goes, what bright spot thought it would be good to display the tiny, tiny navigation system map at center of the speedometer? Need a magnifying glass to simply see it! Does Volvo not beta test these things anymore? How about SIMPLY turning on or turning off the heater or AC without running off the road! Wow, software updates over the airways and/or once per year said the dealer. No, not really, once per year immediately turned into at least once every three months, but of course, one must inconveniently take the vehicle into the dealer for updates. This while Volvo sends customers advertising for improved software performance for low, low additional costs. All the while the vehicle is supposed to be fully covered with their warranty?!?!?! Ridiculous that I also must pull to the side of the road to safely turn on / off or adjust heat or AC settings! As for the cruise control, beware of the car involuntarily jerking off to the right at every exit turn off while driving on highways. I could go on and on and on, but clearly the bright spots at Volvo get failing marks for safety and reliability on this vehicle.

Rides well as one would hope of 70000 vehicle Everything else is difficult to use or nonfunctional. Plug in works 80 percent of time. Otherwise gives preparing to charge message google assistant Not only poorly functional and must have failed promotion no amradio must pay extra for app for radio. Apps work again perhaps 80 percent of time two occasions where car would not turn off unless I left car and locked and unlocked it poor foreign representation of what a Volvo used to be!

The vehicle has no am radio which is essential for receiving emergency alerts…Ride is noisy and extremely rough for what Volvo calls a luxury vehicle…No owners manual and when simply trying to find the windshield washer fill, Volvo’s website shows it being on the passenger side up near the head light…It’s not, it’s on the drivers side up near the windshield behind the hood piston making it next to impossible to fill without a funnel of some kind…The front of the hood when open is set so far back from the front bumper that it’s over 9 feet off the ground, if you’re not 6’2” or taller it’s impossible to reach…It appears to have been designed by a 10 year old…

An expertly designed, powerful, yet high gas mileage SUV.. With all the options our XC60 offers a simple BMW would have gone to a $75K price tag. And Volvo's options work flawlessly! In 2023 with Google taking over the GPS functions and communications would become an automatic choice for us.

We have a 2023 B6 Ultimate Bright in metallic white with amber leather interior. We ordered it in the fall of 2022 and have about 15K miles on it now. We had a 2013 XC60T6 and 2016 XC90T6 before it and this the best overall compared to the others. Some folks complain the ride is too firm or rough (without stating whether they chose the big optional wheels); we ordered the smaller stock wheels so the tires would have the tallest sidewalls and that gives it a very good ride on all road surface conditions in our midwest town. We had big wheels and air suspension on the XC90 which didn't ride as well. This is a very comfortable car with lots of rear seat legroom for big kids or adults. Early on, we had some display issues with the Google maps or Info display that did not open immediately on startup; that required us to stop safely, turn off the car and restart/reboot it to fix it. Software updates since then have apparently fixed those issues. I'm glad we got a 2023 for the B6 which has great performance compared with B5 that is the only non-hybrid powertrain for the XC60 now.

XC60 PHEV (Recharge) (2023) Really wonderful

First thing: I also drive a BMW X3 and a Lexus RX 350L (AWD). It is around the X3 in size but is more luxurious to me. Contrary to the salesperson's estimate of up to 50 miles a charge, the XC60 PHEV 2023 that I drive gets an average of 42 miles on "pure" electric, according to the dashboard reading after a charge. This is around 7 more miles than what is quoted in official ratings. I do not drive conservatively or use the "B" drive mode - which is annoying to me. If all you do is drive to work and the local stores on a typical day, your biggest worry is should you intentionally burn off the gas after a few months. The automatic switching from electric to all gas is seamless, if a bit noisy. Note: some customers do not love the noise of the gas mode. Try renting a 4Runner for the first time and see how you like the drive quality for comparison. Everyone I have spoken to who works for Volvo and has had the opportunity to drive one from home to work for more than a week (managers, employees) loves it. Second, you don't need to pay Volvo for a $1200 home charger, just install a basic 240 plug in the garage (I paid around $200 to an electrician). The SUV comes standard with all the cords and plugs already (probably around $600 OEM). Any electric charging station away from the house has a cord so you do not need to ever bring it with you when you drive. I heard from the Service department the other day that you can charge level 3 at Tesla charging stations now with an adaptor, but i did not verify that. the point of this type of vehicle is you do not need to have EV anxiety. The vehicle gas gauge is very cool and says it can go around 600 miles on gas when full. The hybrid mode probably gets 28 miles to the gallon, the gas only" "power mode" might get 16 and is a bit noisy. Just run it in hybrid or all electric mode. The power for me is good, better than the Lexus which is like driving a couch and less tight than the BMW. I prefer driving the Volvo over any other vehicle I owned previously, which includes Ford SUV's, Jeeps Cherokee and Toyota GX and LX's. Volvo's are not inexpensive, but neither is anything decent these days. Your get three years free service, which is nice. I will buy another one, which is the best recommendation IMO.

poor quality and poor executive response to concer

I thought Volvo was synonymous with quality and customer service. It turns out that I was sadly mistaken. While helping someone practice for their license, the passenger side mirror hit another car’s mirror at very low speed. The other car’s mirror had not a scratch but, inside the Volvo mirror, a piece of hard plastic that helps anchor the mirror snapped. The mirror worked fine in every way other than it was loose on it’s mooring I approached my volvo dealer for a repair. Apparently fixing this seemingly small problem required replacing the entire mirror and was $1300. I went to a different dealer and they quoted $900 for the same work Shocked by the poor quality of the mirror and extortionate repair price, I wrote to Volvo executives and received a response from someone called Taj. At first, I was mollified that Taj offered a 30% rebate on the repair by submitting the receipt of the invoice. I did as instructed and did receive a cheque. Except, contrary to the 30% Taj had clearly stated in his message, it turns out the rebate was only for parts... so effectively 15%. I wrote to Taj again. At first, no response (did he realize his error and was hoping I would not follow up?). A couple of weeks later, I sent a reminder. Taj responded rather rudely that “we do not reimburse the rebate on our end “ So, to recap - Poorly engineered mirror where a rigid plastic part snaps easily at light contact - Very high repair costs for something seemingly minor - A misleading offer of 30% rebate as compensation which turned out to be closer to 15% - An unresponsive and somewhat rude executive office contact So, no, Volvo’s reputation for quality and customer service is hollow and, while we like the car, we do not recommend buying one
